根据短文内容,选择恰当的答案。
There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to be healthier is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep, and they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back.”
A famous person once said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. Actually, you will be able to do more.”
13.To be healthier, the easiest and cheapest way is to sleep at least ________ hours every night.

A.laziness B.a pay check C.a time line D.a credit card
16.Those sleep-deprived people may have the following problems except ________.
A.tiredness B.sleepiness C.loneliness D.sickness
17.According to the last paragraph, it is a foolish idea that people will ________.
A.do less work if they sleep at night B.do less work if they don’t sleep at night
C.finish all the work without any sleep at night D.do more work if they sleep at night
18.Which of the following can best express the writer’s opinion on sleep
A.Enough sleep will make you healthier and more efficient.
B.The older you are, the more sleep you’ll need.
C.The less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Russia and America were both very interested in space exploration. Each country wanted to be the first to send a man to the Moon.

How to make your own Internet page
It’s easy to make your own Internet page. The easiest way is to use a special program called a “web editor”.
You can find these programs on the Internet.
First think about some things to put on your Internet page by looking at other people’s pages. You need to put your Internet page on a bigger computer called a “host” which stores the pages so that other people can see them.
These computers are owned by special Internet companies. Our program may be able to help you find a host computer which you can use for free, but some companies will charge money for this.
To make your Internet page, start up the program and write some text in the window, then use the signs you can see on the computer to put in pictures and make the text larger or smaller, and change the way your page
looks.
You can also put photos on your Internet page. First, you need to put the photo in your computer, then use your mouse to move the photo to the place where you want it. Choose the correct sign for putting photos onto the page, then find the name of your photo in your computer. When you’ve found it, choose that one with your mouse and put your photo on your Internet page.
You can also put signs on your Internet page to join it to other people’s pages. Visitors to your page can follow these signs to find out more about a subject. For example, if your page includes some information about Jackie Chen, you could put on a sign that takes you to the page for his fan club.
When you have completed your Internet page, you can put it on the Internet. After you put your page on the Internet, anyone will be able to see it.

A letter from an old tree
Dear human beings
I hesitated (犹豫) a lot before writing this letter. All I want to do is to ask you to have a look at your life. But I’m not sure whether or not you’ll pay attention to me.
I’m a pretty old tree now. I’m 80 years old. So I’ve seen much of the world. We’ve lived on Earth with you for thousands of years. Each day we release oxygen and remove harmful gas so that you have pure air. We cool the air so that you don’t have to run your air conditioners all the time. We help prevent the soil from being washed away. And above all, we give all kinds of fruit, nuts, beans as well as wood to you.
We like the world, we like you human beings. But you’ve never been interested in us. For example, do you know how amazing we are Do you know that, just like you, we trees are communicating with one another And a tree can warn its neighbors of danger if insects attack it And some of us pass nutrients (养分) and water around by joining our roots together underground I suppose you don’t.
We are now in great danger because of you. You are, in fact , destroying us at a terrible speed. You are burning and cutting down millions of us each year, but you’re not planting enough. For every tree being planted today, 30 trees are being cut down. What would you do if all of us died Perhaps you would die, too. Without us, you wouldn’t get the ingredients for some of your important medicines, you wouldn’t have enough material for buildings, furniture, paper products, and your cities would look ugly. In addition, air pollution and noise pollution would become more and more serious, and your life would turn nasty....
Well , the list could go on forever, but I think I should stop. The best thing for you to do now is to stop destroying us and start protecting the environment, because we are the best fighters against pollution and we are your best friends!
I wish all the best for you, and good luck!
Your friend,
An old tree

A man is travelling in the desert and he loses his way. He has no water to drink and thinks he will die. After walking for two days, he finds an old wooden house. He enters the house, and finds a water pump (水泵). He is very excited, and goes to pump some water, but no water comes out. He loses heart, and sits on the ground. Then he sees a bottle near the water pump. It is full of water and there is a note on it. It says, “You must put the water into the water pump to get water out of it. Don’t forget to fill this bottle when you leave.”
He looks at the bottle of water, and can’t decide what to do. If he drinks the water, he may be able to survive in the desert for a while, but if he puts the water into the water pump, he may get enough water to help him get out of the desert, or may get nothing. Finally, he puts the whole bottle of water into the water pump. He again tries to pump water out, and this time plenty of water comes out. He drinks as much as he can, and fills the bottle with water again. A few days later, he walks out of the desert.

Daniel Olin was 11 years old when his parents moved to Canada. He liked his new school and made friends there, but then things at home started to change. His mum and dad began to argue and the arguments got worse and worse until one day, Daniel’s mum left. With his father working long hours, Daniel felt very lonely and very unhappy. He wanted to escape, to run away. And that’s what he did.
Very early one terribly cold morning when the snow was deep on the ground, he packed a bag with some clothes, some chocolate and a map of Canada and set off to a forest. He ran and ran until he could hardly breathe. His feet were heavy with the snow but he still walked on through deep snow, not even watching where he was going.
Then, disaster struck. A rock hidden by the deep snow caught his feet and Daniel fell to the ground. He had broken the bone. He was very cold and was starting to feel tired, but he knew that if he fell asleep in the snow, he would certainly die from the cold.
A tree shook ahead. From within the branches, a pair of yellow eyes watched Daniel. The puma had been following him. A puma is a large wild cat with claws that could tear Daniel into pieces. But instead of moving in for the kill, the puma walked up to Daniel and lay across his chest, arms and legs. Daniel was too frightened to move, but soon the warmth of the animal reached Daniel and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed his muzzle (口鼻) against Daniel and shook his head gently. Clearly, the puma knew that Daniel must not fall asleep. This animal should have been a real danger to Daniel and yet the boy began to feel safe.
They remained like that for several hours until Daniel and the puma heard voices. The rescue team had found them.

Robot fools humans
The idea that robots could one day be our friends has been around for a long time but until now they have always seemed more machine than person. A new study by a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology has found that in fact it’s possible for robots to fool us here and there, they are just less perfect than human. Inspired by the Turing Test, Agnieszka Wykowska came up with an experiment using a child-sized human-like robot called iCub. Sitting in front of a screen, the people in the test were asked to press a button when a green box appeared on the screen, however, iCub only responded to red boxes Wykowska programmed the robot to take different lengths of time to respond, just like a person would. Afterwards, the humans were asked to judge whether they had been competing with a machine or a person according to the time of the buttions being pressed—and they couldn’t tell. Wykowska believes that making robots have more human responses is the key to making better robots and creating more trust between humans and robots.
In another study with iCub, the robot and a human watched special videos of animals. In the first set of tests, iCub greeted the person, asked for his name and kept eye contact with its camera “eyes”. It made comments about the videos, laughed and showed emotions (情感). In the second experiment, however, iCub did not communicate with human and just made machine-like noises. The researchers found that people believe that the more human iCub is, the more it has its own thoughts and desires. The team now wants to know if people can communicate with robots that do not look human but that still show human-like actions. The researchers plan to repeat the experiments, using robots of different shapes and sizes, to see how people give their responses.

Dear mum and dad,
I’m writing this letter to you from the center of Australia. At the moment we’re staying near Uluru—that’s the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a plane tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3. 6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture.
The Australians have many British relatives. That’s why they’re like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.
Although it’s December, it’s summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.
The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down…
Finally, later this evening, we’re taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home, it’s been a fantastic trip!

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography (摄影术) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. Travellers brought back wonderful photos from all over the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.
In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard. Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike .
Photographers also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed feelings, like other kinds of art.

D.People who sleep a lot are lazy.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Russia and America were both very interested in space exploration. Each country wanted to be the first to send a man to the Moon.
In 1957, Russia sent the first satellite into space. The name of the satellite was Sputnik. It was only as big as a basketball, but it was the start of the space race! In 1959, the Russians sent a spacecraft to the Moon. Its name was Luna 3. It went around the Moon and took photographs, but it didn’t land on the Moon. There weren’t any astronauts on Luna 3.
In March 1961, the Russians sent an astronaut called Ivan into space. He wasn’t a real person—he was only a toy. The Russians wanted to test the spacecraft and the astronaut’s spacesuit before they sent a real person into space. Ivan returned to the Earth safely. (He’s now in a museum, and he’s still wearing his spacesuit!). In April 1961, the Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to travel into space and go around the Earth.
A month after Gagarin’s Right, President Kennedy of the USA made a famous speech. He wanted an American astronaut to walk on the Moon, and return safely to the Earth, before the end of the 1960s. When he made the speech in May 1961, Russia was ahead in the space race. However, winning was very important to the Americans. They spent a lot of money on new spacecraft. In July 1969, Kennedy’s wish came true. Two American astronauts walked on the Moon. Their names were Nell Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

On March 22nd, World Water Day is a day to celebrate water and make a difference for people who do not have the water they need.
The truth about the world
The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink That’s around 1 in 10 people in the world.
But what does this mean
If we drink dirty water, we can catch diseases from the bacteria (细菌) and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from dirty water. That’s around 1,400 children every day! In Ghana, 85% of all disease are from dirty water, and in Nicaragua, 75% of the people don’t have clean drinking water. Also, in some countries children walk many kilometers every day to get water, they can’t go to school so they don’t learn how to read and write and don’t get an education.
Water for everyone
In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water. On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water. People organize events to raise money.
For World Water Day, some people in the UK walk, run or cycle 10 km, others climb mountains or even jump from an aeroplane and skydive to the ground. At one school, children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk 6 km with 6 litres of water, so they can see how it feels to walk along distance carrying heavy bottles of water. People give them money to do these things and all the money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the world.

31.What is the first thing to do to make an Internet page according to the passage

33.According to the article, what things can you put on your Internet page
A.Text, photos and signs. B.Photos and films.
C.Text, signs and music. D.Text and music.
34.What’s the main idea of the article

A letter from an old tree
Dear human beings
I hesitated (犹豫) a lot before writing this letter. All I want to do is to ask you to have a look at your life. But I’m not sure whether or not you’ll pay attention to me.
I’m a pretty old tree now. I’m 80 years old. So I’ve seen much of the world. We’ve lived on Earth with you for thousands of years. Each day we release oxygen and remove harmful gas so that you have pure air. We cool
the air so that you don’t have to run your air conditioners all the time.

Daniel was too frightened to
move, but soon the warmth of the animal reached Daniel and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed his muzzle (口鼻) against Daniel and shook his head gently.
It made comments
about the videos, laughed and showed emotions (情感).

At the moment we’re staying near Uluru—that’s
the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock.

My husband brought home a box of six chickens at the start of the pandemic (流行病), our nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, hasn’t let them out of her sight. She named every one and was very upset when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed.
Sophie takes at least one chicken with her when she is out. One hot day, she wanted to take Captain Flint to the river. I wasn’t so sure about it: Could chickens swim Sophie balanced a stick on her river tube (游泳圈) for Captain Flint to stay on, and the two floated down the river.
Naturally, Sophie dressed as a chicken in a festival and put Trixie in her arms. The neighbors thought it was hilarious and they laughed. “Wait, is that a real chicken you’re holding ”
The chickens are teaching us about love as well as loss and sadness. Sadly, Captain Flint died after an accident. We said a few words about what a good chicken she was, and thanked her for the joy she brought to our lives before we buried (埋) her. Sophie painted a lovely picture in memory of her and has been wearing a hat with Captain Flint’s photo ever since.
The chickens weren’t allowed in the house until one evening after taking online courses when Sophie told me, ”There’s nothing to feel happy about. “Since then, we’ve allowed one inside at a time. That is, if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit. The chickens brought a lot of joy back to our lives. In a few short months, they have taught us to accept what we can’t change and find joy where we can. I am so grateful.

In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype. Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way.
Some photos were not just copies
of the real world. They showed feelings, like other kinds of art.
