When you think of a new place for growing food, you might think of Mars. But one Italian family believes one possible place is right here on the Earth: the ocean.
Nemo’s Garden is the world’s first underwater system of land plants. Located off the coast of Noli, Italy, it is made up of several greenhouses. Each of them is connected to the seafloor. “The aim of it is to change farming, and add a possibility for growing plants in the ocean. What we have on Earth will be used up one day, and such gardens can offer us added space.” says Luca, the son of the family.
Luca’s father, who enjoys diving and gardening, came up with the idea. In 2012, the family began with planting basil underwater. Now Nemo’s Garden is growing strong.
According to Luca, underwater planting has some advantages over traditional farming. In their garden, growing six to ten meters underwater, the plants are separated from any outside viruses. The temperature of the ocean water is also perfect for plants. Besides, with high technology, Nemo’s Garden uses water-based nutrients (养分) instead of soil.
What’s more, there is little influence on the underwater environment, so no harm is caused to sea creatures.
More work is done to make sure underwater planting works well. Everything is watched and checked on
land through cameras and sensors. And if there is something wrong, the family will change the settings in the greenhouses. When it’s time to collect the vegetables, a diver will cut them, place them in bags and send them to the surface.
“Many local people were doubtful about our idea. Some people are realizing that it works, and it helps put Noli on the tourist map.” Luca says, “We need someone who thinks about crazy things. It might be something, or it might not. But we have the courage to try. We have bigger plans although it will take years to work on them.”

A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. For example, if you find a really old house somewhere, you will see that the doors are usually much lower than they are today. Why Because hundreds of years ago, people were shorter. Over time, the human body has changed a lot.
Can we expect the human body to keep changing in the future For sure, and the main reason is that we have more and more technology (科技), and it’s changing how we live. What kind of changes can we expect Well, no one can be 100 percent sure, but here are some possible changes.
In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past, so we grow more. But we will get weaker (弱的) in more than one way. Our muscles (肌肉) will not be as strong as now, because we won’t do lots of physical work.
We are already using our feet less, and our hands more (think about cars and computers). So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller. At the same time, our fingers (手指) will get longer. And our fingers and eyes will both get better, because they will have to do more work together.
What about the mouth It will get smaller, because we needn’t talk so much with the help of technology. And last but not least—people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, because we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm anymore.

Everything is watched and checked on land through cameras and sensors.

“I had to walk the whole 3 miles home from school today!” said Jack.
“Why did you have to walk ” Grandpa asked. “What’s wrong with your windpack ”
“The compressor (压缩机) is broken again. Windpacks are so much work.” he complained to Grandpa. “I
wish they’d create something that easier to take care of.”
Grandpa smiled. “Jack, you don’t know how easy and clean windpacks are compared to cars.”
“You never actually had a car, did you, Grandpa ” Jack asked. “I thought those were no longer in use before you were old enough to have one of your own.”
Grandpa pulled a small, thin photo card out of his wallet and said: “I bought my car around 2025. ”
“That’s nearly 50 years ago!” cried Jack.
Grandpa took out a color photo of himself as a young man. He stood proudly next to a huge dark red vehicle (车辆). “This kind of car was called a truck.” Grandpa told Jack.
“Tell me again what made them run.” Jack said.
“Gas (汽油),” answered Grandpa. “The world is a much cleaner place without it,” he added. In the last 50 years, pollution has been cut down by 75%. I am certain that you and I will both live longer because of it.
Jack was quiet for a moment. “Grandpa, I guess windpacks aren’t as much of a pain as I sometimes think they are.”

Will all these things happen And if so, when These are questions that no one can answer for sure.
