Hello, everyone. I’m Lin Tao. I want to be a volunteer of going green. I’m glad to make a speech here.
I have many strong qualities. I’m so confident that I’m not afraid of making a speech in public. I’m creative, so I often come up with new ideas. I’m also organized. I always keep all my things in good order.
My favourite colour is green, because it’s the colour of nature and represents new life. I have worked as a volunteer for protecting the environment. Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing who was born in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, and by age 17 Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. He developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.

① The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow, of course-it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows (柳树) and poplar trees (杨树) in spring. The female trees grow lots of flowers. When these flowers finish growing, they produce cotton-like seeds (种子) that spread through the air. For some people, this “snow” is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes ,and skin uncomfortable.
② Luckily, scientists have found many ways to control catkins. Doing “gender change surgery (变性手术)” on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches (树枝) of female trees and replace (替换) them with branches from male trees. This cuts down the number of catkins. However, this way is slow and expensive. A skilled worker can do the “surgery” on less than ten trees a day. From 2008 to 2018,only around 1,000 trees were treated in Beijing, reported Outlook Weekly in 2022.
③Scientists in Wuxi, Jiangsu, use special injections (注射剂) to reduce the number of catkins on trees. These injections make the trees mainly use their energy to grow bigger and get more leaves, not to reproduce (繁殖) and make catkins. Xu Qinming,an expert in Wuxi, told Science and Technology Daily that this method is safe for the trees. However, the trees need to get injections every year to keep the catkin numbers under control.
