Hi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been lucky to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say, and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

Baseball was always where my heart lay. However, my father did not care for baseball. Two recreational activities he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself. Frankly, I wasn’t entirely certain he cared about me. In a way, my father was like a familiar stranger I saw every day.
One day, watching the play on TV made me want a glove of my own. To my surprise, my father said he wanted one, too. He was on the portly side, but then again, one of the famous pitchers (投球手) on the Mets was even fatter. So I thought, why not
We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested that we go out to the courtyard and that I toss the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm (手掌). If you’ve ever caught a ball with a baseball glove, you know how much this hurts.
But my father caught ball after ball this way. Slap! Slap! He winced (呲牙咧嘴). After about five minutes, I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest. Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt laugh at me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball do that. When my father took the glove off, his palm was red and swollen.
Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again—it spoke its own kind language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.
24.Why did the father want a glove
A.He was interested in baseball. B.He was impressed by the play on TV.
C.He wanted to show his skills in baseball. D.He wanted to make the author happy.
25.What does the underlined word “toss” mean in Paragraph 3
A.Pick. B.Catch. C.Throw. D.Practise.
26.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.The author criticized his father when playing.
B.The author’s father was good at playing baseball.
C.The author’s father hated to play baseball with him.
D.It really hurt when his father caught the balls.
27.Which could be the best title for the passage
A.Baseball and I B.The Sound of Love
C.Practice Makes Perfect D.Love That Never Comes
根据第一段“However, my father did not care for baseball.(然而,我父亲并不喜欢棒球)”、第三段“We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested that we go out to the courtyard and that I toss the ball around.(我们买了两只手套,那天晚上,他建议我们去院子里,让我把球抛来抛去)”以及最后一段“Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again—it spoke its own kind language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.(11年前去世的父亲从未告诉我他爱我。但棒球一次又一次地落在他柔软的手掌上的声音——它说出了自己善良的语言,尽管当时我只感到羞愧)”可推知,作者的父亲想要一副手套是因为他想要陪作者练习棒球,想让作者感觉开心。故选D项。
25.词句猜测题。根据第三段“We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested that we go out to the courtyard and that I toss the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm (手掌).(我们买了两只手套,那天晚上,他建议我们去院子里,让我toss棒球。我在学校已经练习过接球和投球,但我看得出来这是我父亲第一次,因为每次他接球,球都直接落在他的手掌上)”可推知,作者和父亲在院子里,作者投球,父亲接球,划线单词表示“投掷”,与throw同义。故选C项。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段“He winced.(他呲牙咧嘴)”以及“When my father took the glove off, his palm was red and swollen.(当我父亲摘下手套时,他的手掌又红又肿)”可知,作者的父亲接球时呲牙咧嘴,摘下手套时手掌红肿,所以作者的父亲接球的时候一定很疼。故选D项。
Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound
of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again—it spoke its own kind language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.(11年前去世的父亲从未告诉我他爱我。
C
Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths — far greater than wind turbines (涡轮) and airplane strikes put together. In an attempt to help birds see the windows before it’s too late, people may stick decals (贴纸) or coloured films on their windows — often on the indoor side. But a recent study challenges the effectiveness of this practice.
“Putting these window films on the inside really is not giving you the benefit that you would want for protecting the birds,” says John P. Swaddle, lead author of the new study.
To test the films’ effectiveness, Swaddle and his colleagues applied one of two commercially available (可获得的) films to either inside or outside window surfaces. One film reflected shorter light wavelengths that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). The researchers also fixed super-fine nets in front of the windows to keep birds from actually hitting the glass. Both films helped to prevent bird strikes by more than 35 percent when put on the outside surface, the study found — but films on the inside had no benefit at all.
“It’s some groundbreaking work about the differences of what can and can’t work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds,” says George Mason University biologist David Luther.
People usually find it much easier to put films or decals on the indoor side of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Penuela, a conservation ecologist. For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, “you need scaffolding (脚手架)...you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don’t last as long.”
Swaddle assumes that films placed on the inside don’t effectively stop the reflection of outside light. This might also be the case with decals, although those were not tested in this study, he says.
28.What’s the main killer for human-caused bird death
A.Wind turbines. B.Air pollution.
C.Window strikes. D.Airplane crashes.
29.According to Swaddle’s test, which factor is significant in preventing bird strikes
A.Types of films.
B.Availability of films.
C.Places to put films.
D.Wavelengths films reflected.
30.What is David Luther’s attitude towards the study
A.Doubtful. B.Positive.
C.Unclear. D.Confused.
31.What’s paragraph 5 mainly about
A.How long the films will last when put correctly.
B.What is needed to clean the windows completely.
C.How people apply films to the outside of buildings.
D.Why people choose to place films inside the window.
根据第一段“Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths — far greater than wind turbines (涡轮) and airplane strikes put together. (每年有数亿只鸟因撞到窗户而死亡,这是人类造成鸟类死亡的最大原因之一,远远超过风力涡轮机和飞机撞击的总和。)”可知,鸟因撞到窗户而死亡是人类造成鸟类死亡的最大原因之一,撞到窗户而死亡的鸟的数量比因风力涡轮机和飞机撞击而死亡的数量总和还要多得多;由此可知,撞击窗户是人类造成鸟类死亡的主要杀手。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中“To test the films’ effectiveness, Swaddle and his colleagues applied one of two commercially available (可获得的) films to either inside or outside window surfaces. One film reflected shorter light wavelengths that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). The researchers also fixed super-fine nets in front of the windows to keep birds from actually hitting the glass.
根据第四段“‘It’s some groundbreaking work about the differences of what can and can’t work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds,’ says George Mason University biologist David Luther.(乔治梅森大学的生物学家David Luther说:‘这是一项开创性的工作,研究了在防止鸟类撞击窗户方面,什么能起作用,什么不能起作用。’)”
根据第五段“People usually find it much easier to put films or decals on the indoor side of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Penuela, a conservation ecologist. For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, ‘you need scaffolding (脚手架)...you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don’t last as long.’ D选项“Why people choose to place films inside the window.(为什么人们选择把膜贴在窗户里面。)”

It’s a late night in the Metro area of Phoenix, Arizona. Under the streetlights, a car can be seen slowly approaching and parking. A green and blue ‘W’ glows (发光) from the windscreen, giving off just enough light to see inside—showing a completely empty driver seat. When the person waiting for it opens the door to climb inside, a voice greets him. “Good evening, this car is yours,” it says. This is a Waymo One robotaxi, ordered just 10 minutes ago using an app.
The promise of driverless technology has long been inviting. It has the potential to improve our experience of commuting (通勤) and long journeys and take people out of high-risk working environments. It’s key to helping us build the cities of the future, lowering carbon emissions. And it could make traveling safer. “We want safer roads and less accidents. Automation (自动化) could provide that, ” says Camilla Fowler, head of automated transport for the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
But in order for driverless technology to become mainstream, much still needs to change.
“Driverless vehicles should be a very calm way of getting from A to B.But not every human driver around it will be driving in that way,” says David Hynd, from TRL. “It’s got to be able to deal with human drivers speeding, for instance, or breaking the rules of the road.”
And that’s not the only challenge. There’s regulation, rethinking the highway code, public perception, improving the infrastructure (基础设施) of our streets, towns, cities, and the big question of ultimate responsibility for road accidents. “The whole insurance industry is looking into how they’re going to deal with that change from a person being responsible and in charge to the vehicle doing that,” says Richard Jinks, vice president of commercial at Oxfordshire-based driverless vehicle software company Oxbotica, which has been testing its technology in cars and delivery vehicles at several locations across the UK and Europe.
The ultimate vision (终极愿景) experts are working towards is of completely driverless vehicles, not only for personal use but also for industry and wider transport networks, that can be used anywhere and everywhere around the world.
But with all these challenges in place, what exactly does the next 10 years have in store for autonomous vehicles
32.What is special about the car mentioned in paragraph 1
A.It drives very slowly.
B.It is automatic and drives itself.
C.It can sense its driver’s feelings.
D.There is enough light to see inside.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about driverless vehicles
A.Their main dangers. B.Their special design.
C.Their wide popularity. D.Their potential advantages.
34.With what might Hynd and Jinks both agree about driverless technology
A.It isn’t ready for wide application.
B.It will make driving a safe experience.
C.It isn’t developing as smoothly as planned.
D.It will increase profits in the insurance industry.
35.How does the author feel about the future of driverless vehicles
A.Hopeful. B.Surprised. C.Uncertain. D.Disappointed.
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.C

根据第二段“The promise of driverless technology has long been inviting. It has the potential to improve our experience of commuting (通勤) and long journeys and take people out of high-risk working environments. It’s key to helping us build the cities of the future, lowering carbon emissions. And it could make traveling safer. “We want safer roads and less accidents. Michelle and I had been best friends since the fourth grade. She was a beautiful girl inside and out, one of the kindest I’d ever met. We were like paper and glue—completely inseparable.
It was in the eighth grade that things slowly started to change between Michelle and me. I became a social butterfly, flying around to different groups of friends, discussing the hottest gossip (八卦). Although I made many new friends that year, I still loved Michelle and wanted her to hang out with my new, fairly large social group. I
tried to drag her along to my social gatherings, . but I soon noticed the disapproving (不赞成的) looks and whispers about Michelle—a clear message that she was not cool enough to hang out with us.
One night, one of my new friends, Jamie, came over after school. I was excited that she wanted to come over to my house and spend time with me. After a couple of hours of laughing and having a great time, Michelle’s name came up in our conversation. Slowly, a mischievous (恶意的) smile formed on Jamie’s face. Jamie ordered that I tell Michelle that Jamie was my best friend then. Afraid that my new friends would dislike me if I refused, just like they did to Michelle, I picked up the phone, dialed Michelle’s number and said it out to her without hesitation. She was more sad, heartbroken and angry than I’d expected, and as I listened to her cry over the phone, I remembered how close we used to be. At that moment, I realized how much I treasured her friendship, and how cruel my actions were. Needing to think about what I had just done, I got off the phone.
I soon called Michelle back and told her the truth and I was deeply sorry that I ever decided to betray (背叛) her. I was sorry for not being there for her in the last few months, and I was sorry for letting my friends pressure me into situations like these. I wanted to be her best friend again.

sincerely. “No, you are not my friend again. It is Jamie who is your best friend. Go to play with her, your best friend!!” She said angrily and then left, leaving me there all alone. I knew I really hurt her this time. What should I do to make her forgive me In the next few days, she didn’t talk to me any more. I felt so sad.
A week later, Michelle asked for leave because she was ill. Knowing that, I was very worried. Should I go to see her But what if she didn’t see me I was troubled by these questions and didn’t know what to do. But I knew I was very worried about her. So after the inner struggle, I finally gathered my courage to see her. When I arrived her home, she was surprised to see me. Nervously, I came near her and asked, “Are you all right ” “Fine,” she said softly, “I am sorry for treating you like that. Can we be good friends again!” “Of course, it is I who should say sorry. You are always my best friend.” I said. Then, we both smiled.

“The whole insurance industry is looking into how they’re going to deal with that change from a person being responsible and in charge to the vehicle doing that,” says Richard Jinks, vice president of commercial at Oxfordshire-based driverless vehicle software company Oxbotica, which has been
testing its technology in cars and delivery vehicles at several locations across the UK and Europe.

I tried to drag her along to my social gatherings, . but I soon noticed the disapproving (不赞成的) looks and whispers about Michelle—a clear message that she was not cool enough to hang out with us.
