一、单元语篇内容和主题意义
I 主题语境
第二单元 “Travelling around the world”,以“走遍世界”为话题,以国家、城市及景点介绍为主线。该单元主题属于《义务教育英语课程标准(2022年版)》“人与社会”范畴下的“历史、社会与文化”主题群,子主题内容为“世界主要国家的文化习俗与文化景观、节假日与庆祝活动”和“身份认同与文化自信”。同时也属于“人与自然”范畴下的“自然生态”主题群,子主题内容为“世界主要国家的地理位置、不同地区的生态特征与自然景观”以及“人与自我”范畴下,“做人与做事”主题群,子主题内容为“勤于动手,乐于实践,敢于创新”。同时,本单元也是上学期7A第六单元 “Travelling around Asia(以城市介绍为主线)”的一个延续和拓展。

本单元的最终任务是需要学生综合运用所学的语言知识和技能,以小组为单位,收集世界上某个城市的图片及文字资料,完成一份简介,从而制定旅行计划,运用明信片介绍自己的度假情况。这就首先需要学生了解世界上有哪些著名的城市或者地标建筑物,掌握如何来展开介绍这些对象的方法,从而明确自我的旅游需求,选定目标城市,介绍旅行计划。在了解世界上知名城市的这方面,学生通过七年级上册的第六单元“Travelling around Asia” 的多个语篇,了解了亚洲不同城市的特征和人文风貌, 但学生对于世界上其他国家的一些知名城市的地理位置、人文和历史背景、标志性建筑甚少了解。在描述分享个人度假计划的这方面,学生在七年级上册的第五单元已经掌握合理制定观光计划的技能。基于以上的分析,选取以下的文章作为本单元课本语篇阅读的延伸和补充,继续探讨“旅行的意义”,了解更多国家知名城市的标志性建筑和自行车旅行的知识。

The Singapore Flyer The Singapore Flyer is Asia’s largest observation wheel. It is built over a three-floor building. It has 28 capsules.Every capsule is like a mini-bus and can carry as many as 28 people. People will get to see the beautiful city sights while riding the wheel. Universal Studios Singapore Many people go to visit the Universal Studios in Singapore. It is the first amusement park in the south-east of Asia.There are seven themes with more than 20 sites in it.The sites are all from popular movies. You can walk down the “Hollywood Boulevard”, meet movie stars such as Transformers and Shrek,or ride on a pair of the world’s tallest roller coasters. Families with little children can ride the kids’ roller coaster and a merry-go-round in the big park. The park brings smiles to people of all ages.

THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME
A Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure. Most of us
keep dreaming; others make it happen.
B Gregg Bleakney's dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea after he finished a 1,600-kilometer bike ride. Gregg's friend Brooks Allen was also a cyclist. The two friends talked and decided on their goal: They would travel from Alaska to Argentina- -by bike.
C To pay for the journey, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years. In 2005, after four years of planning, they set off. Once they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in hostels. In many places along their route, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
D During their trip, Gregg and Brooks cycled through deserts, rain forests, and mountains. They visited modern cities and explored ancient ruins, such as Tikal in Guatemala. In many places, they met other cyclists from all over the world.
E In May 2007 -two years, 12 countries, and over 30,500 km later- -Gregg eventually reached Ushuaia, Argentina, at the southern tip of South America.(Halfway through the trip, Brooks had to stop. He returned to the United States and Gregg continued without him.)
F Gregg and Brooks kept a record of their adventures in an online blog. The trip taught both men a lot about traveling. Here is some of Gregg's advice.
