The number of weather-related disasters has increased by five times over the past 50 years, the latest report by the World Meteorological (气象) Organization (WMO) said on September 1st. However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of death from these hazards (危险) has been almost three times less.
According to the WMO, from 1970 to 2019, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50 percent of all disasters. Among the top 10 hazards that led to the largest loss of human life during this period were droughts, storms, floods and extreme temperatures. However, deaths fell from over 50,000 in the 1970s to less than 20,000 in the 2010s.
“Weather, climate and water extremes are increasing and will become more frequent and severe in many parts of the world as a result of climate change,” says WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
“That means more heatwaves, drought and forest fires such as those we have observed recently in Europe and North America. We have more water vapor(水蒸气) in the atmosphere, which is worsening extreme rainfall and deadly flooding. The warming of the oceans has affected the frequency and area of existence of the most intense(强烈的) tropical storms. ”
“Economic losses are increasing as exposure increases. But behind the statistics lies a message of hope. Improved multi-hazard early warning systems have led to a significant reduction in deaths. Quite simply, we are better than ever before at saving lives,” Taalas said.
24.What do we know from the first paragraph

When it comes to technology, adults won’t be able to keep up with their children. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million people, but it took only 20 years for the phone to reach the same number and 13 years for the television. However, it took Facebook 3.6 years and Twitter only needed 88 days. Over the last 15 years, digital communication has brought in more changes than the printing press did in 1570. And those most likely to use them in this world are teenagers, whose brains appear to be a great ability to adapt to the world around them, according to Dr. Jay Giedd, a brain expert.
We are now discovering that our brains during the teenage years are still flexible. Having a more flexible brain means that certain functions of it, such as the ability to make long-term decisions, haven’t developed yet, which may also explain why we spend a long period living under the protection of our parents rather than leaving home at the age of 12 or 13. This also means that the teenage brain adapt to new technology, allowing teenagers to keep up with the increasing pace(节奏)of digital technology, giving them an advantage when doing different tasks.
As they look at these screens, they’re dealing with information. There are concerns about how social media is affecting the way in which the brain learns to socialize. Giedd says that a lot of what goes on inside our brains is social. Social interactions are being changed by technology.
There is an advantage to the growing digital trend. YouTube shows that teenagers all over the world are watching the same things and laughing at the same jokes, showing that they are more global-minded than teenagers in the past. They are more open to other cultures, other countries, and other people.
28. How many years did it take for television to reach 50 million people
A. 38 years. B. 20 years C. 15 years. D. 13 years
29. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Teenagers’ brains are flexible.
B. Teenagers are protected by their parents.
C. Teenagers are good at doing different tasks.
D. Teenagers’ abilities to make decisions haven’t developed.
30. What does the trend of using You Tube show
A. Teenagers prefer to socialize online.
B. Teenagers spend much time on social media.
C. Teenagers are now more open-minded than those in the past.
D Teenagers are more likely to be attracted by the Internet than grown-ups.
31. What may be the best title for the text
A. Concerns about social media influence. B. Teenage brains in the digital world.
C. Teenager-related technologies. D. Development of teenage brains.

For ten years, I have spent my Monday evenings attending rehearsals (排练) for my amateur (业余的) choir. Mondays are not my favorite day, and I often arrive feeling bad, but by the end of the rehearsal, I usually feel energized. The singing does me good. So do the people. I wouldn’t describe my choir members as close friends. We exchange brief chats, smiles and jokes but that is enough for me to feel better about the world.
There is no choir practice now. I miss it. In lockdown, I do not feel short on emotional support, but I do feel short of friendly faces and casual (随便的) conversations. Another way of putting this is that I miss my “weak ties”.
One way to think about any person’s social world is that you have an inner circle of people whom you often talk to and feel close with, and an outer circle of people whom you see sometimes. Mark Granovetter, a sociology professor at Stanford University, named these categories (种类) “strong ties” and “weak ties”.
Experts had thought that a person’s happiness depended mainly on the quality of their relationships with their close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity (数量) mattered, too. He found that for new information and ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. Granovetter surveyed 282 Boston-based workers and found that most of them got their jobs through someone they knew. But only a few got the job through a close friend; 84% got their job through those weak-tie relationships. As Granvetter pointed out, the people whom you spend much time with swim in the same pool of information as you do. We depend on friendly outsiders to bring us news of opportunities.
So we should continue to find ways to develop weak-tie relationships in lockdown. We can use social media to reach out to people we don’t know well for light, but meaningful communications. We can also make more weak-tie-style conversations with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time or energy.
32. What makes the author happy during his Monday evenings’ choir practice
A. His meeting with a close friend. B. The praise from choir members.
C. The progress he has made in singing. D. His communication with choir members.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The changes of people’s social world. B. What “strong ties” and “weak ties” are.
C. The different ways people communicate. D. Why interpersonal relationships are important.
34. What did Granovetter think of weak-tie relationships
A. They are easier to build than strong ones.
B. They offer more benefits than strong ones.
C. They can bring new information and ideas.
D. They make little difference to people’s happiness.
35. What does the author suggest people do to have weak-tie contacts in lockdown
A. Use social media to make new friends.
B. Draw outsiders into a full online conversation.
C. Make strong-tie-style chats with distant friends.
D. Have more brief conversations with family members.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park ” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football ”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc. “Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly(毫无表情地) by the desk, just staring out of the window.

读后续写
“You don’t look happy, Marc. What’s wrong ” she said. Explaining what had happened, especially the bet between him and Huck, he told Lily his decision. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”

We depend on friendly outsiders to bring us news of opportunities.(正如Granvetter所指出的,和你一起度过很多时光的人和你一样,都在同一个信息池里游泳。
