If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the body is the mirror of the feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give out our body signals (信号). If we look at someone else’s body, we can often know how they are feeling by their body signals. So I think reading body language signals is a helpful tool in daily communication. It can help us communicate with others more easily if we use it in the right way.
Here are some numbers for you to know how important it is to read and use body language. 7% of the information we receive is from what people say, and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone (语调) and the speed of their voice; while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language.
These non-verbal (非口头的) signals will help you a lot, but you still need to pay attention to what people are saying. If you pay too much attention on their body language signals, you and the people may feel uncomfortable.
It is useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals, and it is useful to be able to read people’s body language too. Body language may have some interpretations. Many signals have different meanings. It depends on the person, the situation and the culture. For example, in the US, people wave goodbye with the palm (手掌) facing the person they’re waving to. But in other cultures, people may wave goodbye with the palm up to the sky, and the fingers opening and closing. To people in the US, this might look like a gesture asking someone to come closer. So you have to be sure of the meaning when you are trying to read a body language signal…

One night as I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries(日用品), something unusual happened to me.It made me review the meaning of life.
As soon as I went through the glass doors, I could tell something unusual was happening at the cash register(收银台). I saw a cashier taking a few items (物品)out of a customer’s bag. The shopper was an old woman. I couldn’t even begin to describe to you how sad this woman looked. I stood there for a second and quickly realized that the cashier was taking items off the bill to cut down the payment.
I walked quickly over to the cash register, pointed to the items that she was about to put behind her and then pointed at my bag, showing that I would pay for them. She understood. After putting those items back in the bag at the register, she again went to help the woman with her card, but it still didn’t work. I looked at the screen to see the number, took some cash out of my bag, handed it to the cashier and then quickly walked away.
The old woman was a bit nervous about her card and didn’t notice me at all. When the cashier told her that she didn’t have to pay a cent, she was confused(茫然的).
I didn’t walk back into the supermarket, but I felt so proud. I was really happy that I was able to help the old woman out and hopefully bring some joy and happiness into her life.
What is happiness As you can imagine, there are a lot of answers. Some people say that giving is a kind of happiness; it gives people warmth and joy. Some people say that harvest is a kind of happiness; it makes you realize the joy and excitement after the harvest. But I think to help others is a kind of happiness. It is the most valuable experience and it will always warm your heart.

Have you ever heard someone use the phrase “once in a blue moon” People use this expression to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone might say that he or she tries not to eat sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate “once in a blue moon”. Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore once in a blue moon.” While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.
The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase “blue moon” has something to do with the shape of the moon, not the colour.
As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shapes. We call certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon, it is called a crescent moon. A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip (尖端) of a fingernail (手指甲). When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a “blue moon”.
Over the next 20 years, there will be only 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare event. This fact has led people to use the expression “once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives.
36.When does a blue moon happen in nature

71.例文
Dear Chairperson,
Thank you for reading my letter. I would like to join the school voluntary team to help protect our environment. In my opinion, going green plays a very important role in our life.
In my daily life, I often try my best to reduce pollution. For example, I always remember to take my own bags when shopping instead of plastic bags. As we all know, it may take a plastic bag hundreds of years to break down. What’s more, I know the importance of saving energy, so I always turn off the tap when brushing my teeth and turn off the lights when I leave a room. I also plant flowers at home to live a green life.
If I am lucky enough to join the team, I will help hand out leaflets, teach young children ways to recycle things and take part in all kinds of activities.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

It is useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals, and it is useful to be able to
read people’s body language too.

A.When the moon has a blue colour. B.When we cannot see the moon at all.
C.When there are two full moons in one month. D.When we can only see a small part of the moon.

A.The letter “O”. B.The letter “M”. C.The letter “H”. D.The letter “C”.
38.Which of the following would be a good example of using the phrase “once in a blue moon”
A.Simon often tells jokes. Simon tells jokes once in a blue moon.
B.Tom hardly remembers to do exercise. Tom does exercise once in a blue moon.
C.Mary likes to go shopping every weekend. Mary goes shopping once in a blue moon.
D.Cindy hates to stay up, but she stays up every day. Cindy stays up once in a blue moon.
39.What does the underlined part “This fact” in the last paragraph refer to
A.A blue moon is a very rare event.
B.The moon itself is never really blue.
