“I wish I could make a living from my hobby,” you may think. “It sounds great!”
But according to Sue Cole, a management expert, there can be both advantages and disadvantages for those who combine their hobby with their career. “There's a real possibility that your hobby becomes less attractive when it's your job. But also quite a few people who make their hobby their career become too enthusiastic and forget about the basic principles of business,” she says. “For example, someone may think: I love cooking. There aren't enough restaurants in this area. I'll start one. That can be a recipe for disaster.”
Richard Campbell, however, has made a success of it. A keen amateur singer with a passion for travel, he first became involved in organizing musical tours as a university student. On graduating, he joined a small student travel company, Sunway Travel, as a tour leader. Thirteen years later, in 1993, he bought the business and changed it to focus all on musicians, both amateur and professional. It was a successful move and Sunway Travel now arranges travel for 80% of Britain's classical musicians around the world.
Campbell explains that things haven't always been easy. “Sometimes the company didn't perform as well as I'd expected. There were difficult times and I had to learn to cope with the stress. However, we've now got to a level where my staff can run the business on a daily basis and all I need to do is keep an eye on things.”
Campbell recognizes that he could have earned more in another line of business. “Travel generally doesn't pay well. I have friends who are very highly paid in other jobs.” But he has no regrets. 'They envy me because I am reasonably well paid to do something that I love doing.”

Can you imagine setting a Guinness World Record by playing video games Jaden Ashman, a teenager from the UK, did. He is the youngest esports millionaire from a single tournament (比赛). In 2019, the then 15-year-old boy walked away from the 2019 Fortnite (《堡垒之夜》) World Cup with over $1 million (about 6.4 million yuan) in his pocket.
Like most gamers, Jaden started by playing a little of everything. “I started playing with my uncle. He used to play controller and he was really good at it” said Jaden. This led Jaden to become a professional Xbox One controller player in esports. Although using a mouse and keyboard to play esports helps you aim at the target more accurately (精准地), some people prefer using a controller. Jaden’s success stands for a community (群体) of controller lovers.
According to Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, it takes around 10,000 hours to become an expert at something. Jaden’s road to becoming a professional gamer was by no means (绝不) an easy one. Apart from time spent at school or sleeping, Jaden used the rest of his time for training.
Parents always worry about their children wasting too much time on video games. So did Jaden’s mother. She thought Jaden was spending far too much time on his Xbox and once even threw it out of the house. “Jaden said to me before we went [to the World Cup] ‘I’m going to take you to New York and show you what I can do’. And he did,” said Jaden’s mother. She is actually very proud of her son now, not because of his winnings, but because of what he proved he is capable of.
