1. Body language across the world It's well-known that we all send messages through body language, however, sometimes it can be easy to forget that each culture has its own body language. Understanding (理解) body language in other countries is key to successful communication (交流), especially when we know nothing about a foreign language.
Eye contact (接触)
In many countries such as in the USA, Australia or UK and in Western Europe, looking the person in the eyes when talking shows your respect (尊敬) for the speaker. It means that you are interested in and paying attention to what is said. However, in other cultures in Asia, too much eye contact is not polite and even disrespectful.
Handshakes
Shaking hands is a usual way to greet in many cultures. In Romania, for example, only men usually shake hands. And they do it every time they meet, not just the first! In England, however, it's unusual to shake hands.
The "V" sign
In the United States, the "V" sign means "peace". However, it can be very rude in other places such as the UK, Australia and South Africa when the back of the hand is facing the other person.
Head movements
In many countries, nodding your head usually means that you agree to something. But for Bulgarians and Greeks, it means quite the opposite. And in India, people move their heads from side to side to show they are actively listening.
Truly, each person is different and understands body language according to his or her culture and personal experience. So the best thing to do is to stay open-minded and learn more about other cultures.
(1) How do you show your respect for the speaker in Western Europe?

In China, for example, people always serve(提供)the tea when people get together. The Chinese drink it at any time of the day at home or in tea houses. They like to drink plain tea(素茶)best.
Tea is very important in Japan. The Japanese have a special way of serving tea called the"tea ceremony(仪式)". It is very old and full of meaning. People do everything in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in Japanese homes.
Another tea drinking country is England, and the late afternoon is people's "teatime". Almost everyone has a cup of tea then. The British usually make tea in a teapot and drink it with milk and sugar. They also eat cakes, chocolate and a few candies at teatime.

3. Seba Stephens is only 11 years old, but he's a very talented (有天赋的) musician. He plays the drums, bass, guitar and piano.
Seba and his family live in Memphis, USA—a place famous for music. He grew up with music all around, but his favourite was the drumming from the band (乐队) The Police. "The Police songs are full of so much cool drumming," he says.
Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. "Drums!" he answered. His parents bought him a junior drum set (儿童架子鼓). He liked it very much. "He didn't stop playing," says his dad, Everett.
But soon Seba grew unhappy. He couldn't get his junior drum set to make the sounds he had heard. Then his parents bought him a professional (专业的) drum set and let him take drum lessons.
In just a few months, his drum teacher said that Seba was learning so quickly that he needed a higher level of lessons.
Seba's parents encouraged him to play music in other ways. Seba learned the bass, guitar and piano. As a four-year-old child, he faced difficulties. "I couldn't see over my drum set," he says. He also couldn't find a good bass that was small enough.
Seba started a band in kindergarten. By first grade, he could make money by playing music. In 2020, Seba joined a summer music program at Berklee, a famous college (大学) of music. To keep up, he had to practise for 36 hours a week.
After the summer, Seba asked his parents to home-school him so he could keep going to Berklee during the school year. He did school work in the mornings. In the afternoons and at night he worked on music. He studied with some famous drummers, and learned many drumming skills.
In May 2021, Seba became the youngest person ever to receive a professional certificate (证书) from Berklee. When he's old enough, Seba hopes to go to college at Berklee. For now, he's still practicing and playing.

4. Many people don't start a day without a cup of coffee. Coffee is popular all over the world.
Coffee is a cold or hot drink made from coffee beans. Coffee beans are not really beans but berries from the coffee tree bush. There are at least 60 types of coffee trees in the world. The coffee tree needs warm climate. More than 10 billion (十亿) coffee trees are grown all over the world.
There are different types of coffee drinks. Black coffee is coffee with no milk in it. Espresso is very strong coffee. Cappuccino is espresso with milk. Latte is made like a cappuccino but with more milk and a very thin layer of foam (泡沫).
Coffee has a long history. No one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered (被发现). A legend (传说) said that, before about 1400, a shepherd (牧羊人) named Kaldi noticed that his sheep seemed more energetic (精力充沛的) after eating some berries, and some of them even didn't want to sleep at night. Then, people made a tea of these beans and found it could help people stay up late.
Drinking coffee brings some advantages for people. The caffeine (咖啡因) can make people feel energetic and less tired. That's why some people drink coffee when they are studying or working. Also, it acts on the brain to improve memory. However, drinking coffee in the evening makes it difficult for some people to fall asleep. Also, too much caffeine is dangerous for kids.

7. AR(增强现实) is a new technology(技术) right now. AR lets us see the real-life environment(环境) right in front of us—a pterodactyl(翼手龙) landing in the trees and the palaces in the past. Many of us know that AR is used in mobile games. However, education(教育) is another important space where this technology can make a difference.
AR brings science to life in education. In the past, teachers used 2D pictures and lifeless models(模型) to teach science. With AR, science will become more lively. Students can use AR apps to learn different animals. Students can also learn other subjects with AR. For example, in geography classes, students can see great natural phenomena(自然现象) wherever they are. In history lessons, students could walk into buildings of last century or talk with historical heroes. AR brings the real world to the classroom. AR is also useful for schools in villages and small towns, where students can't often go to museums in big cities. In the past, only students from rich families could pay for the travel to famous places like the British Museum or the Louvre. Soon, with the help of AR technology, students from around the world may be able to visit these places. In some ways, the AR experience would be even more exciting than a real trip to a museum because students could touch historical objects(物品) freely.
AR in education is the future of all students. It will change the education for maybe a hundred years. With the help of AR, the classrooms of the future may not look much like the classrooms of the past.

When he stays at home, a special robot sits in his place in the classroom. The robot has a light on its head. The light turns on and off when Joshua needs something. With the robot s help, the boy s teacher and friends can talk to him. It is very important for Joshua. He can still be a part of the class.
The first robot to take classes with human students is Pepper. These days, the friendly Pepper is giving a helping hand to students at a special needs school. Children there have difficulty in talking with others and understanding how others feel. Pepper can take part in a lot of activities with them, such as story-telling, dancing and playing games. In this way, it helps the children better manage their emotions (情绪) and join the school activities.
It is not new to use robots to help children in special needs schools. In the past, the robots mainly helped children with their studies. But now the robot students care more about children s feelings. They can answer back with right activities to cheer the children up.

12.In ancient times, people depended on stars to guide them on a clear night. Today, we have navigational systems (导航系统) to help us find our way. The recent one is the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).
The Chinese engineers built the BDS independently. With the launch of the last satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on June 23, 2021, the global (全球的) network of 59 satellites has been completed. On July 31 of the same year, Beidou started providing services to the world. It's difficult to imagine.
When you unlock one of Hellobike's bicycles, you are using the BDS. Users can also find shared bikes more easily thanks to Beidou's positioning service.
However, the BDS doesn't just work one way. As the country's largest space-based system and one of four global navigation networks, Beidou has a two-way communication system, including its ability to receive messages sent by people from areas with poor communication signals. Obviously, it isn't designed for users to chat online. Instead, it plays a role when disasters happen and communications are blocked.
After the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, all ground-based communication facilities (设施) were interrupted. Though the first generation of Beidou could only send 120 characters in a single message at that time, communication between affected areas and rescue centers was successful.
Now, Beidou can send 1,200 Chinese characters in a single message.
As Sun Jiadong, former chief designer of the BDS said, "The application( 应用) of Beidou is only limited by imagination."
(1) What's the recent navigational system
(2) When did the BDS start providing services to the world
(3) What communication system does BDS have
(4) How many Chinese characters can Beidou send in a single message now

13. Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world's most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies(交响乐). Before he died in 1827, he began a new symphony, but never finished it. He only left behind some notes about the piece and a few "sketches"—short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal was to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn't just want to complete the symphony, they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write.
The team decided to use artificial intelligence(AI) to help finish the symphony. To train an AI, they turned every piece of Beethoven's music to a form the computer could understand. By doing this, the AI could look for patterns(模式) in the way Beethoven wrote. They also studied Beethoven's notes and sketches to work out where in the symphony he planned to use each little bit of music.
In an early test, the team took a few minutes of music created by the AI seed on Beethoven's sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts were made up by the AI.
Finally, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits to a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony—not simply a melody(乐曲), but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra(管弦乐队). On the night of October 9th, 2021, the piece was performed for the first time ever by the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn, Germany.
So Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn't write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might be written, if he'd had the chance.
(1) What was the team's goal
(2) What did the team do to train an AI
(3) What was the result of the team's early test
(4) How long did it take the team to complete the 10th Symphony

14.To Have A Not-to-do List Like most people, you probably have a to-do list to help you finish a task. However, I would also suggest you make a not-to-do list. This list works well with the to-do list and it might be even more important. Let me explain.
This is Mike. He loves video games and plays them every day. But he also has an important exam coming up. So Mike puts studying on his to-do list. That day, Mike picked up the books and studied for half an hour. Then he took a short break and played some games. However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.
The next day, Mike took on the challenge of studying in a different way. He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was: "No video games until 7:00 pm." Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break. However, he didn't get on his computer like the day before because he didn't allow himself to play at that time. Instead, he drank a glass of water. Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.
Mike realized that having no restrictions(限制)was the problem. He was always choosing between work and free time. Because enjoying himself was an easier choice, hardly any work got done as a result. So Mike made a not-to-do list.
Sometimes what you choose not to do matters more than what you decide to do. We shouldn't just limit our "bad" behaviors but our "good" behaviors as well. For example, practicing the piano could be considered a good habit. But when you have other more important things in the moment, the piano becomes nothing more than a distraction(注意力分散). However, there's one thing that should never end up on your not-to-do list. That is to learn something new every day.
(1) Did a to-do list help Mike prepare for his exam well?
(2) What did Mike write on his not-to-do list?
(3) How long did Mike study the next day?
(4) According to Paragraph 4, what problem has Mike realized?
(5) What does the writer want to tell us?
15.A Chinese Class in Chicago High School
Standing in front of the blackboard, Christina Xu starts the class as usual, which lasts 90 minutes. Sixteen students stand up, shout their greetings of "good morning" in Chinese, and start the class.
This is a usual Chinese class at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School in downtown Chicago. The 16 students are divided (分成) into small groups, four in each group, to practice Chinese speaking and writing.
The four different tones (声调) are one of the most difficult parts in Chinese learning. To make it easier, Xu uses gestures, and asks the students to match gestures with the words she pronounces.
Walter Payton is one of the 41 public schools in Chicago that offer Chinese classes. About 60 certified full-time Chinese teachers like Xu are offering Chinese courses in four levels to about 11,000 elementary and middle school students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
"CPS offers 12 foreign languages for students to choose," said Jane Lu, CPS Chinese world language coordinator and director of the Confucius Institute in Chicago. "In 2018, Chinese replaced French to become the second most chosen foreign language." Lu thinks it is because of the rapid development and rising of China on the world's stage.
Sixteen-year-old Steven Norinsky is a junior at Walter Payton. He has been learning Chinese since elementary school. He plans to learn it throughout high school. "I choose Chinese because I think it is the most important language to learn," Norinsky explained.
