Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving,Sara's father,Anthony Pascucci,60,woke up excited to string lights and decorate the lawn of his home and didn't take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter(抵消)some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020,as in every other year,Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway.Sara's brother,Anthony Jr.helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物)on the tree inside the house playing the song“White Christmas" over and over to keep everyone in thespirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve,the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree.Everyone was looking forward to overly stuffed clams-a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family.
However,Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn't have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February,Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

But when she retumed to the house after the funeral, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy.
In the following days, more and more Christmas lights were reappearing on neighbors' houses.
But when she returned to the house after the funeral, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. It was the sweaty labor for Christmas decorations; it was the familiar smell of tasty food; it was the remaining connection with her beloved one. Immersed in a mixture of grief and determination, Sara wiped the tears streaming down cheeks, climbed up the ladder and tightened the loose strings of lights, replacing worn-out lights and cleaning dusty ones. Past as the Christmas Day had been,Sara continued her family tradition just as her father did. When some neighbors passed by, they stopped to chat with Sara as a comfort and some even initially joined her.
In the following days, more and more Christmas lights were reappearing on neighbors' houses. Never had Sara expected such an amazing scene.Standing in front of the house, Sara greeted neighbors with exceeding gratitude and inquired about the lights. The mystery had a sweet explanation that the neighbors had got together and decided collectively to hang their lights back in honor of Anthony Pascucci. Sara waved with quivering hands and cried “Thank you” to those kindhearted people, tears gradually blurring her eyes. Undoubtedly, the kindness neighbors brought warmed Sara in this bitter cold winter and the support from neighbors was an important reminder that the brightness of lights could counter the darkness of sufferings life threw at us.

When it was completely dark, someone brought a fewlitlamps. Two hours later, a soldier called out,"Stop!" He stood in the middle of a small hole. The wall had caved in at that spot. I recoonized a part of a door. Beneath it. a small foot.
Excitedly, the soldiers began to clear the hole. Then, they lifted the door."She is alive!" someone said. It was a miracle. She had been buried under the debris for a hundred and sixteen hours. She had survived the earthquake and the cold nights. A cheer went up as the soldier wrapped her in a warm blanket and carried her to the tent where a temporary hospital had been set up. What was more fortunate was that after examination my sister didn't suffer any big injuries. Later, whenever thinking ofthis, my sister always mentions that it was mypersistence that saved her luckily. But in my mind, I want to thank that officer and his soldiers first.
