(2024·江苏盐城·二模)Bassanio looked at the three boxes, but he did not read the writing on them. He looked at the gold and silver.
“The world is tricked by appearances,” he said. “People often hide ordinary things with beautiful gold, silver, and jewels. People always agree with those who speak well, even if they say foolish things. Many people who seem brave are really cowards. How often do we believe in leaders who turn out to be bad ” Then Bassanio remembered the story of Midas, the man who loved gold too much. He wanted everything to be gold. He wished that he could
make everything gold just by touching it. When he could, it was a disaster. He could not eat his golden food, and he was afraid to touch his daughter. “No, I do not want these beautiful boxes of gold and silver. I will choose the lead box with its ordinary color. It speaks more to me than all the gold and silver in the world. Please give me the key to the lead box. Let happiness be mine.” Bassanio said to himself.
One of the servants gave him the key, and he went to the box and opened it. Portia was very pleased. She could not believe it, until Bassanio opened the box and saw the picture of Portia inside it. When he saw the picture, he loved her even more because the picture was very beautiful. He wondered how anyone could paint such a good picture of her. It was almost as beautiful as Portia herself. He looked at all the parts of the picture. He looked at the eyes and the hair and the eyes. All of them were perfect. But Portia herself was even more beautiful than her picture.
The writing inside the box told him that he had chosen the right box. It said that he should go to Portia and look into her eyes. She would be his wife. Bassanio could not believe it. “Is it really true ” he asked. “Will you really be my wife I am afraid to believe it until you say so.”

(2024·江苏泰州·二模)In a village near the home of the Amur tiger in China, people faced big challenges. The village was important for tigers to move around safely. However, farmlands were often destroyed by wild animals. Zhang Weimin, a local villager, once lost up to 10, 000 yuan because of this. He didn’t understand why they must protect these creatures. In fact, he was not alone. Many people living in this area probably shared the same opinion.
In 2021, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) started projects to help the village and protect the tigers at the same time. At first, people like Zhang Weimin didn’t want to be part of it, as they thought they had to pay more to balance protection and development. For example, sharing resources with wildlife can bring protection value, but
farmers may suffer more losses. WWF came up with a plan to get people on board. Step one was to offer the villagers special stoves (炉子) that use less wood and are better for the environment. These stoves also helped the villagers save money on heating. After a series of efforts including door-to-door visits and discussions, the project was gradually accepted by the villagers. Zhang Weimin and other villagers started to see the benefits (利益).
Next, WWF worked with the villagers to find ways to improve green planting techniques. Villagers learned new farming methods and started using earthworms to make the soil better. This helped the crops grow well and also reduced pollution. Zhang Weimin and other villagers began to see that taking care of nature could also help them. They used these new methods on more of their land and shared their experiences with others.
The final step was to get the whole community involved (加入) in protecting the tigers and their home. They learned to work together and share the benefits of protection. This made the villagers more willing to help protect the tigers and their land.
Zhang Weimin’s story shows how people can change their minds about protecting nature when they see the benefits for themselves. By working together and respecting each other’s ideas, we can find ways to take care of the environment and help people live better lives. It’s important for everyone to be part of this effort to make the world a better place for both people and wildlife.

The paper was full of unusual things except the important news story on the front page. There were many articles on scientific subjects, and the pictures of fashions were especially interesting. The world was obviously warmer because the clothing was simple, and it only covered small parts of the body. The main item of clothing was a light-weight cloak (斗篷). Everyone seemed to be wearing some kind of large metal thing on one of their arms.
There were photographs of people in African and Indian cities, and they all looked well and wealthy. There were no photographs of hungry children or wars. This was very unlike the newspapers of our own time. The only sad story was about the death of a gorilla. It was the last gorilla on Earth.
One page was full of statistics. The most interesting, Brownlow thought, was about the birthrate. It was seven per thousand, he told me. This was amazing. It was a small part of our own birthrate, which was already not very high. The article did not give numbers for different countries. There was only one birthrate, and that was for the whole world.
I asked Brownlow about crime. There was still crime, he told me, but the articles were more about the causes of crime than catching criminals.
He told me many more things that he read in the newspaper.
“I read until I fell asleep,” he said. I did not wake until my cleaning lady came and woke me up the next morning.
“I looked for the newspaper,” he said, “but I could not see it. There was only a piece of the wrapper (包装纸) on the floor. I jumped up and ran into the kitchen. My cleaning lady was there. I asked her where the newspaper was.”
⑧“I threw it with the other rubbish down the chute (管道) as I usually do,” she said. “I expect it is in the hot water furnace by now. The caretaker usually burns all the rubbish as soon as it comes down.”
Brownlow ran down to the basement, where the furnace was, but he was too late. There was no sign of the newspaper.
“So you have no proof (证据) that the newspaper existed,” I said.
“No. Only this. I found it on the floor in my sitting room.”
He handed me the wrapper. The paper was green, and the address was Evan O’Hara, Mr, Sussex Court, 49.
And that is all I know about Brownlow’s strange newspaper. I have no explanation for it. I only know that if his story is true, on 10 November, 2051, Evan O’Hara, Mr. will get a newspaper addressed to Brownlow, dated 10 November, 2001.

My grandfather died when I was a small boy, and my grandmother started staying with us. I don’t know what kind of perfume (香水) she used, but it was so strong that it was almost impossible to remain at her room breathing for any length of time. Even so, no one can change her.
This, then, was my grandmother at the time of the infamous pea event.
It took place at the Biltmore Hotel. My grandmother, my mother, and I were having lunch. I ordered a Salisbury steak, thinking that was a good old hamburger with gravy. When brought to the table, it was together with a plate of peas.
I always hate peas. It is a complete mystery to me why anyone would like to eat peas. I certainly was not about to eat them.
“Eat your peas,” my grandmother said.
“Mother,” said my mum in her warning voice. “He doesn’t like peas. Leave him alone.”
My grandmother did not reply. She leaned in my direction, looked me in the eye, and said the words that changed my life, “I’ll pay you five dollars if you eat those peas.”
I had no idea of money. I only knew that five dollars was a BIG, nearly unimaginable amount of money. Now only one plate of them stood between me and the five dollars. I began to force the bad things down my throat.
My mother was very angry. My grandmother had a self-satisfied look on her face. “I can do what I want, Ellen, and you can’t stop me.” Every single pea made me want to throw up, but the magical image of that five dollars floated before me, and I finally ate the last of them. My grandmother handed me the five dollars with a flourish. My mother continued to glare in silence. And the event ended. Or so I thought.
That night, at dinner, my mother served two of my all-time favorite foods. Along with them came a big bowl of peas. She offered me some peas, and I, in the very last moments of my innocent youth, refused. My mother fixed me with a cold eye as she put a huge pile of peas onto my plate. Then my mother said the words that were on my mind for years.
“You ate them for money,” she said. “You can eat them for love.”
The five dollars were quickly spent. My grandmother passed away a few years later. But the story of the peas lived on and the words became my forever nightmare (噩梦). I had to eat them that day and every other time they were served thereafter. If I want to refuse, my mother repeats the dreaded words one more time.
15.When grandmother made the suggestion, she most probably felt ________.
A.unhappy B.ashamed C.patient D.confident
16.The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.show the great importance of eating peas B.explain how to use pocket money wisely

(2024·江苏盐城·二模)Pinocchio hated the dark street, but he was so hungry that he ran out of the house. The night was very black. It thundered, and bright flashes of lightning now and again shot across the sky, turning it into a sea of fire. An angry wind blew cold and raised thick clouds of dust, while the trees shook and whispered in a strange way.
Pinocchio was greatly afraid of thunder and lightning, but the hunger he felt was far greater than his fear. In a number of leaps and bounds (飞跃), he came to the village, tired out.
The whole village was dark and deserted (无人居住的). The stores were closed, the doors, the windows. In the streets, not even a dog could be seen. It seemed the Village of the Dead.
Pinocchio ran up to a doorway, threw himself upon the bell, and pulled it wildly, saying to himself, “Someone will surely answer that!” He was right. An old man in a nightcap opened the window and looked out. He called down angrily:
“What do you want at this hour of night ”
“Give me a bit of bread! I am hungry.”
“Wait a minute and I’ll come right back,” answered the old man, thinking he had to deal with one of those boys who love to roam (闲逛) around at night ringing people’s bells while they are peacefully asleep.
After a minute or two, the same voice cried:
“Get under the window and hold out your hat!” Pinocchio had no hat, but he managed to get under the window just in time to feel a shower of ice-cold water pour down on his poor wooden head, his shoulders, and over his whole body.
He returned home as wet as a small piece of cloth, and tired out from lifelessness and hunger.
As he no longer had any strength left with which to stand, he sat down on a little chair and put his two feet on the stove (火炉) to dry them.
There he fell asleep, and while he slept, his wooden feet began to burn. Slowly, very slowly, they blackened and turned to ashes (灰).
Pinocchio snored away happily as if his feet were not his own. In the very early morning he opened his eyes just as a loud knocking sounded at the door.

Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing who was born in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. “Did you see all the diamonds (钻石) on those ladies They were beautiful. Imagine being rich!” said Jane.

For example, sharing resources with wildlife can bring protection value, but farmers may suffer more losses.
There
were no photographs of hungry children or wars.

She leaned in my direction, looked me in the eye, and said the words that
changed my life, “I’ll pay you five dollars if you eat those peas.”

In
a number of leaps and bounds (飞跃), he came to the village, tired out.

Once upon a time, on July 24th 1897, a little girl was born in Ashes Kansas. As a child, Amelia was adventurous, climbing trees, collecting bugs, hunting rats with their rifle and exploring the neighborhood. Many historians have described Earhart as a “tomboy” growing up because of this.
