The year of the Dragon begins on February 10, 2024. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac (生肖). Dragons are not real animals. Chinese dragons can fly in the sky or swim in the sea. In stories, dragons rule over water, rainfall, wind and flood.
The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of yellow dragons. The dragon is very important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people are proud to call ourselves “the descendants (传人) of the dragon”. A number of Chinese sayings refer to dragons. For example, “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon”, which means hoping he or she will be successful.
Unlike in China, dragons are seen differently in Western countries. Western dragons often look like dinosaurs. They breathe fire and catch people. It is a common fairy tale about a man who becomes a hero after killing a dragon and saving a princess. In the English movie How to Train Your Dragon (《驯龙记》), a little boy becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons. In one of the Harry Potter stories, Harry Potter has to fight against a scary dragon and get back the golden egg from its nest.
Because of this, some Chinese experts have suggested changing the English word “Dragon” into its pinyin “Long”. They believe the name “Dragon” makes Western people think badly about China. But some don’t agree. They think Chinese people can look after their own culture. Many Western people already know the differences between Chinese dragons and Western ones.
54.Which power of dragons is NOT mentioned in Chinese stories
A.They can fly in the sky. B.They can swim in the sea.
C.They can rule water and wind. D.They can catch and eat people.
55. What does the sentence “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese
A.龙马精神 B.龙飞凤舞 C.望子成龙 D.龙腾虎跃
56. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A.There are many Chinese sayings about dragons.
B.The Dragon is the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac.
C.Harry Potter becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons.
D.Emperors in China liked wearing clothes with red dragon pictures.
57. Why do Chinese experts suggest changing “Dragon” into Chinese pinyin “Long”
A.Because Chinese are proud of their own pinyin.
B.Because dragon makes Western people think highly of China.
C.Because Western people know nothing about Chinese culture.
D.Because “Dragon” in Western countries doesn’t carry the same cultural meanings as in China.
C
①Every winter, Siberian cranes (白鹤) migrate (迁徙) from northeast Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ habitats (栖息地).
②“In some years, the Poyang Lake experiences floods , while in others, it experiences droughts ( 干 旱 ).Both of these create food shortages (短缺) in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
③To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares (公顷) of lotus roots (莲藕) in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The birds’ number has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
④Over the years, China has worked hard to protect migratory birds and wetlands. Known as the “Earth’s kidneys (肾脏)”, wetlands play a key role(角色) in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity (生物多样性). The Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and bans (禁止) activities such as overgrazing (过度放牧) and giving out wastewater.
⑤Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands. In February, black-faced spoonbills (黑脸琵鹭), an endangered species, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for five years. Last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans (小天鹅) up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.
The bird number is rising in Nanchang because .
A. climate change doesn’t influence the place B. the city offers more food for birds
C. awful weather hasn’t hit the city D. the city becomes warmer and warmer
59. What is the main role (角色,作用) wetlands play
A. Providing habitats for migratory birds. B. Looking after water and biodiversity.
C. Saving endangered animal species. D. Avoiding overgrazing and water pollution.
60. What do the examples in Paragraph 5 show
A. Migratory birds add biodiversity to China. B. New bird species come to China for winter.
C. China has completed its wetlands protection. D. China’s environmental protection is successful.
61. What is the structure of the story
D
On May 2, the Writers Guild of America (WGA, 美国编剧协会) called on its 11,500 members to begin a strike (罢工) in Hollywood, California, and New York City in the US. It is the first writers’ strike in more than 15 years, causing many new projects to stop.
________①________ One big issue behind the WGA strike is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) programs. The WGA demanded that AI not be allowed to write or rewrite literary (文学的) material or be used as source material.
Creative AI programs like ChatGPT can now create human-like literary works. Writers are worried that media companies might someday use AI instead of people to make scripts (剧本) for movies and TV shows. This might bring plagiarism (抄袭) problems as AI usually creates scripts based on a writer’s work. _______②________
________③________ At the same time, using Al to write scripts has a big impact on writers’ pay. As Warren Leight, an executive producer (执行制片人), said, studios might let AI create a first draft (草稿), then hire people to do a second draft, which pays less. This makes writers want to “nip that in the bud”
AI is already being used in the entertainment industry in other ways, such as making actors appear younger and removing (删除) dirty words, said Fortune magazine.
________④________ As James Perry, a TV actor and vice-chair (副主席) of the WGA’s Disabled Writers Committee told Reuters, “This is a crisis (危机) for writers.”
What is the main reason for the WGA members strike
A. Many writers cannot find jobs.
B. The writers want a raise.
C. Writers don’t want AI to be used to create and rewrite scripts.
D. Many new projects were recently stopped.
63. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. Writers are happy to see that.
B. Writers want to stop that from happening.
C. Writers don’t care about that.
D. Writers thinks it’s possible.
64. In which place can this sentence “Although AI is not set to replace human writers anytime soon, the possibility is still there.” be put
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
65. What’s the passage mainly talking about
A. A strike requiring limits on AI use.
B. The functions of AI in life.
C. Opinions on AI use.
D. The disadvantages of AI in life.

One year, a British expedition (探险队) got lost while going across the Sahara Desert. The Sahara Desert was an unfriendly environment. During the daytime, the sun was burning hot and at night it was sometimes very cold. After walking for several days, everyone finally ran out of water. If they made a wrong decision, then they could all die soon.
At that time, the leader of the team came up with an idea. He took out a water kettle (壶) and said "I found a kettle of water in my bag. But before we walk across the desert, nobody is allowed to drink it." The kettle of water became the faith (信心) for everyone to cross the desert. Excitedly, every member of the team passed the only "heavy" kettle。 Many times some of them wanted to give up, thinking of the kettle, they fought on.
Finally, the expedition made it out of the desert. With tears of joy and excitement, they opened the kettle with shaking hands, but what they poured out was nothing but sand! In fact, life has never been a real dead end for anyone. Was it a kettle of sand that really saved them in the desert The answer is NO.
