In the live-streaming (直播) channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. The difference is her students are mostly adults.
The 73-year-old comes from Huainan city of Anhui province and is an experienced educator. She had been a Chinese teacher in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education attempt through live-streaming online. Yang said students learning through her live-streaming channel each have their own demands. So she always prepares her classes carefully after concluding a live-streaming session. She has tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.

A flood hit Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2022. The disaster was caused by a combination of unusually heavy rains and rapid snow melt (融化). The high and fast water flows destroyed bridges and swept away entire roadways, leaving communities and homes isolated. Fortunately, the approximately 10,000 park visitors were safely evacuated.
The town of Gardiner, along the Montana-Wyoming border, was particularly hard hit. The floodwaters left almost 900 people with no power or water for many days. Gardiner’s economy, which depends on the almost three-quarters of a million visitors who pass through the park’s north gate annually, is likely to lake a hit. The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone, and could take years to rebuild.
Park officials have begun work on improving another road to Gardiner. This will ensure that locals can access food, supplies, and other essential emergency services. A limited number of tourists may also be allowed into Cardiner once the road is stable.
Yellowstone’s north gate is closed indefinitely. But the park’s south gate opened to visitors on June 22, 2022. Park officials have started a new entry system to prevent overcrowding. It is based on the last number of the visitor’s vehicle license plate and the calendar date of the month. Cars with odd (奇数的) numbers can visit the park on odd days of the month, while those with even (偶数的) numbers can go on even days.

Who would have thought a teenager’s mobile phone could help them manage their mental health by supporting a good night’s sleep A new app aimed at 12-to 16-year-olds is showing strong early results, improving both the hours of sleep and reducing depression and anxiety.
Sleep Ninja, a free app created by a mental health research organization—the Black Dog Institute, has shown significant early results in improving teenagers’ sleep patterns (模式), so critical not just for school readiness but for overall good mental health, co-creator Aliza Werner-Seidler said.
“Adolescents (青少年) struggle to get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night,” Dr Werner-Seidler, a clinical psychologist, said. “As a result, approximately 40 per cent of all young people will experience a significant sleep problem by early high school which heightens their risk of mental ill-health, which is a risk factor for a range of disorders including depression and anxiety.”
Those using the app nominate a time to be up in the morning to make it to school or other activities. From there, it work backwards, determining when they should be in bed. The app gives an alert to start a pre-bed routine, which launches at least an hour before bed time. Part of that routine is to put the phone and other devices away, and engage in behaviors more suitable to sleep. Some of this is simply to have a shower, clean teeth, read a book. But the app also offers a form of practical tips to help them establish sleep routines, things like how to set up their bedroom, what to do during the day to improve their chances of sleep and how to reduce those negative repetitive thoughts that come in at night.
Dr Werner-Seidler said Sleep Ninja was the only such app designed specifically for adolescents, and the results so far had been very encouraging. She added that we also saw rates of depression drop from 77 percent at the start of the study to 44 percent after using the app.

Reasons Why Change Is Good for You
We all know that change is hard because your brain is used to doing the same thing again and again. We also know how challenging it can be to go through change. 36 Here are four reasons why change is good for you:
◆You get to experience more.
37 When you look back on your life, all of the really amazing things are because of a new experience you had. All of those vacations you took and all of the people you have met have taught you more than you ever learned in school. These experiences now make up who you are today.
◆ 38
Life in the comfort zone is easy. You simply follow a routine and you can predict the results. Outside of the comfort zone, your assumptions are questioned. The idea of doing the same thing over and over without question is discouraged.
◆You’ll be more flexible and adaptable.
Without doubt, change makes you more flexible and adaptable. You learn to deal with things in a way that seems foreign but acceptable and achievable. 39 You begin to thrive (茁壮成长) in new situations because you have proven to yourself that you can, not only handle change, but FLOURISH.
◆You have more fun.
When you are open to change, you are open to saying YES to more. 40 You have the opportunity to meet more people too. When you add all of these things together, you are going to have a more colorful life and you’ll have a ton of fun figuring it all out along the way—there’s no doubt about it.
A. You are pushed out of your comfort zone.
B. But the positive consequence is really great.
C. Experience is waiting for you at the doorstep.
D. You are open to more experiences and opportunities.
E. Whether the change is good or bad for you, it does happen.
F. Then, you’ll be more confident when in the next uncomfortable situation.
G. Change is good because you have the chance to involve in new experiences.

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 p.m., then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 p.m. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a comer, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.
I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I’m very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the ear. So, you see, I know there’s nothing wrong with the car at all.”

Welcome to the weather forecast! The northeastern part of the country is continuing to see heavy snowstorms. On the map, we can see that 10 states will have heavy snowfall this Tuesday. The temperature in some areas could reach a low of seven degrees below zero, so wear a thick winter coat. For those of you living in the southeast, you’ll be having nice weather for a couple more days. But on Wednesday, a storm system will be bringing strong winds and rain your way. Don’t bother with an umbrella, because the wind will make it useless and probably break it. Get a good quality raincoat and stay home if you can. The southwest will be hot and very dry this week. There are warnings of high fire danger, so please pay attention to the local news in your area. In the northwest, you can expect some light rains on Thursday and with colder temperatures than last week.

One possible version:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m writing to offer my suggestions on the improvement of our school’s WeChat public account. As our school’s WeChat public account is a window open to the outside world, I think it is advisable that more photos about our campus life be offered to make it more appealing and attractive. Besides, I hope WeChat public account can be updated more often to keep the public informed of what’s going on in our school. Finally, a new Reading Salon will be welcomed which can provide a platform where people can read educational information and communicate with each other.
I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
读后续写:
One possible version:
A wave of guilt swept over me. I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him, “I’m angry, not with you but with myself. You see. I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I’m going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years”.
“But father, it’s exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it’s dark. You can’t walk back.” I begged. My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However, it was also the most successful lesson.
