On Saturday, Jacob Kohut finally had breaktime during his 12-hour standing guard outside the U.S. Capitol. He could have spent his break resting. Instead, he sat in the back of a Humvee, teaching students via his laptop how to play Beethoven's “Ode to Joy”, which meant he was on double duty, as an active member of the National Guard and as a devoted school band teacher.
“I'm a soldier for the National Guard, but I'm as much a solider for music education,” he says.
When on duty, Kohut's days began in the morning with teaching his elementary class remotely from the drill floor of DC Armory, finishing the lesson minutes before his Guard shift started at 10 a.m. Later in the day, during his break, he would go online to teach his middle school students from the back of a Humvee.
Music has always been a driving force in Kohut's life. He was a saxophone player throughout high school, and finally earned his Doctor degree in music composition at George Mason University.
“What I really wanted was to teach,” says Kohut, who is married and has a three-year-old son. “My mom, who is a single mother, was a music teacher. That's why I do what I do. She is such a good role model.”
Kohut's double duty has caught the attention of parents at Canterbury Woods Elementary School.
“I just wanted to share how impressed I am with Dr. Kohut this week,” Susi Britain said. “This morning he taught the band online from DC Armory, in his tiredness—which just seems so beyond the expectations of a teacher in these circumstances.”
But during the long and sometimes stressful hours of standing guard, Kohut said his teaching time offered comfort. As the 11 instruments were played by his virtual students, the familiar melody of “Ode to Joy” rang through the Humvee. In that moment, Kohut realized there wasn't a timelier tune to teach his students.
“It's a symbol of unity and peace,” he says. “And that's what the world needs right now.”

As people get older, the types and numbers of friends they have tend to change. As young adults, humans have large groups of friends. With age, they often prefer to spend their time with just a few close, positive individuals. Researchers long believed that this aging attraction toward meaningful relationships was unique to humans, but a new study finds that chimps (黑猩猩) also have similar tendencies.
Rosati and her colleagues spent 78,000 hours on observations made over 20 years in the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda. The data looked at the social interactions of 21 male chimps between 15 and 58 years old.The researchers only studied male chimps because they show stronger social bonds and have more social interactions than female chimps.
Researchers found that wild chimpanzees share a similar pattern of social aging with humans. Rosati says, “They prefer strong, mutual social bonds and interact with others in more positive ways as they get older.” The older chimpanzees preferred spending more time with chimps that they had become friends with over the years. They would sit close to these long-time companions and groom (梳毛) each other. By contrast, younger chimps had more one-sided relationships where they would groom a friend, but the action wasn't returned.
Older male chimps were also more likely to spend more time alone. Researchers said that they showed a shift from negative interactions to more positive ones, preferring to spend their later years on non-confrontational (非对抗性的), positive relationships. Researchers call the preference a “positivity bias”.
Researchers theorize that chimps, like humans, are able to change their social focus as they age.“We propose that this aging pattern be the result of shared changes in our abilities to regulate our emotions with age,” Rosati says.“This shared pattern between chimpanzees and humans could represent an adaptive response where older adults focus on important social relationships that provide benefits and avoid interactions that have negative consequences as they lose competitive fighting ability.”
28.What does the new study find about chimps
A.Male chimps show more interactions than females.
B.Old chimps don't care about friends as much as young ones.
C.Chimps concentrate more on meaningful relations with age.
D.Chimps share similar aging problems with human beings.
29.How did Rosati and her colleagues conduct their research
A.By studying the data provided by other researchers.
B.By making scientific investigations and observations.
C.By setting up models on the computer in the lab.
D.By monitoring both the humans' and chimps' behavior.
30.What do researchers think causes this aging attraction to meaningful relationships
A.Inability to regulate emotions.
B.Eagerness to build closer relationships.
C.Loss of competitiveness in strength.
D.Failure to adapt to the changeable surroundings.
31.Where does this text probably come from
A.A short story collection.
B.A popular science magazine.
C.A graduate research paper.
D.A biology textbook.

My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet—and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts. At one point, two women quarreled for several minutes in the freezer section.
Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting on purpose and began to argue.
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called the manager, who took him to the customer service zone. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in the line.
We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. My reaction when I see them is both personal and professional. I am a data analyst and sociologist who studies how and why people interact with one another—or why they choose not to. To me, the grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has disappeared. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith—starting with just one person.
Therefore, my wife and I reached the disturbed cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. We learned her name was Beth.
“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you,” I said.
Beth's face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening with severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.
That is the balancing act, the moment of countering social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restoring trust across the United States. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.
32.What does the author want to show by describing the arguments
A.The job as a cashier is not easy.
B.People in the U.S. are unfriendly.
C.Arguments in public are very common.
D.The confidence in each other has worn off.
33.How did Beth probably feel when the couple gave her a bottle of water
A.Sad and regretful.
B.Sorry and embarrassed.
C.Cheerful and rewarded.
D.Grateful and relieved.
34.What's the author's attitude towards Americans' regaining trust
A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic.
C.Uncaring. D.Cautious.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.A Miserable Cashier B.A Helping Hand
C.Learning to Trust Again D.Starting a New Life

Ruby, a 16-year-old girl in Chicago No.1 High School, always looked up to her cousin Wanda, who was two years older than her and who was studying in a university. Ruby was the only child in her family, so she regarded Wanda as her “immediate” sister. Wanda was not only beautiful, but also smart. She always had good grades in the exams and she could play several kinds of musical instruments, especially the piano. Therefore, she was very popular in her school and she had a lot of friends. In Ruby's eyes, Wanda was a perfect girl so she considered Wanda as her example. Ruby was still in high school but she wanted to go to the same university as Wanda did. Ruby was even in the same clubs in the same high school as Wanda used to be.
Wanda knew that Ruby looked up to her and she appreciated that. On Christmas Day, Wanda sent Ruby a sweater with her university's logo on it as a gift. Ruby was so happy when she got the sweater. She put it on right away and wore it almost every day.
One day in class, Ruby raised her hand to answer the teacher's question and the teacher, who had ever been Wanda's teacher, accidentally called her Wanda. “Oh, I'm sorry, but you just look a little like her,” the teacher said. “I'm so glad,” Ruby said. From that day on, Ruby studied harder and harder because Wanda did well in all her subjects. Ruby just wanted to catch up with her.
When college admission results came out, Ruby was so nervous to visit the website to see if she got admitted. She closed her eyes and slowly opened them. She found out that she got accepted!
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
