Unit 3 Language in use
过去进行时(Ⅱ)
过去进行时除了可以和“at… yesterday morning, at that time, at…
last night”等时间状语连用外，还可以和when, while, as引导的过去时间状
语从句连用，形成复合句。本模块我们重点学习when和while从句与过去
进行时连用的几种情况。
1． when所引导的时间状语既可指时间点，也可指时间段；while所
引导的时间状语只能指时间段。因此，在when引导的时间状语从句中，
动词可以是短暂性动词，也可以是延续性动词；而在while从句中，动词
必须是延续性动词。
e．g. They left while/when we were having lunch. 我们吃午饭的时候
他们离开了。
2． when引导的时间状语从句，如果主句用过去进行时，从句用一
般过去时，则表示一个动作正在进行的时候另一个动作(突然)发生了，强
调从句动作发生的突然性。
e. g. We were having a rest when we heard a loud sound. 我们正在休
息时突然听到一声巨响。
该句也可以用while表达，但与用when表达有细微的区别，请注
意体会：
While we were having a rest, we heard a loud sound. 我们正在休息的
时候听到一声巨响。(只表明听到巨响的事实，不强调突然性)
3． 当主句和从句的动作都是延续性动词或同时发生的，且两句都用
过去进行时的时候，多用while引导。
e．g. They were sleeping while we were working. 我们在工作的时候
他们在睡觉。

NANJING — 15 people died and 44 were hurt after a building fire
broke out on Friday morning, February 23, 2024, in Nanjing, Jiangsu
Province.
At around 4：39 am that day, the local fire department(消防部门)
received a call about the fire in a building in the Yuhuatai District(区).
The fire broke out in Unit 2 of Building 6 with 762 people. The local
government tried its best to save the injured(伤员) after the fire. 25 fire
trucks and 130 firefighters were sent to offer help. They helped 516
people get out of the building. Unluckily, 15 of them were dead and 44
were hurt. At around 6 am the firefighters put out the fire which lasted
more than one hour. All the injured were sent to the hospital.
It's reported that an electric(电动的) bicycle parked on the first
floor of Building 6 caused the fire. In order to stop such fire accidents, the
government should pay attention to electric bicycle parking and charging facilities(充电设施), and offer fire safety education to people.
The fire again tells us that fire safety is no small thing,
and we must always pay attention to our lives and safety.
