Volunteer with Red Cross
Volunteering expands your skills and experience, increases your employability and is a way to stay active and engaged with the community. It’s also a way for you to give back to the community and help people who need a hand. Here are some of our community services:
Aged Care Services for older people
Our social support and aged care services provide a range of support for older people. They can be matched one-on-one with a volunteer, receive regular caring welfare calls, be driven to appointments, be provided with a personal alarm or be delivered a healthy meal. We can also support them to access appropriate housing and care.
Homelessness Services
Red Cross believes that everyone deserves a home that is safe, secure and affordable. In an average year, Red Cross helps 2,180 people to find housing, supports 1,360 people at risk of becoming homeless, and provides 43,400 meals for people experiencing hardship.
We support people who are at risk of losing their rental property by negotiating with landlords(房东) or finding more suitable accommodation. We also help clients to manage the potential issues which contribute to their housing problems, including income management, misuse of alcohol or other drugs.
We build life skills by supporting people who have been homeless to develop community connection and friendship through one-on-one matching with a volunteer, providing education and training support, and teaching first-aid skills. These new connections and skills make a big difference, helping people move out of cycles of homelessness.
Mental Health Support Services
Red Cross provides mental health support services and programs that promote the participation of people with a mental illness in the community and support the well-being of young people. For Mother’s Day I asked for one thing: a house cleaning service. Bathrooms and floors specifically, windows if the extra expense was reasonable. The gift, for me, was not so much in the cleaning itself but the fact that for once I would not be in charge of the household office work. I would not have to make the calls, get multiple quotes (报价), research and compare each service, arrange payment and schedule the appointment. The real gift I wanted was to be relieved of the emotional labor of a single task that had been nagging (唠叨) at the back of my mind. The clean house would simply be a bonus.
My husband waited for me to change my mind to an “easier” gift than housecleaning, something he could one-click order on Amazon. Disappointed by my unwavering desire, the day before Mother’s Day he called a single service, decided they were too expensive, and promised to clean the bathrooms himself. He still gave me the choice, of course. He told me the high dollar amount of completing the cleaning services I requested (since I control the budget) and asked repeatedly if I still wanted him to book it.
What I wanted was for him to ask friends on Facebook for a recommendation, call four or five more services, do the emotional labor I would have done if the job had fallen to me. I had wanted to hire out deep cleaning for a while, especially since my freelance (自由职业的) work had picked up considerably. The reason I hadn’t done it yet was part guilt over not doing my housework, and an even larger part of not wanting to deal with the work of hiring a service. I knew exactly how exhausting it was going to be. That’s why I asked my husband to do it as a gift.
But, I was gifted a necklace for Mother’s Day while my husband stole away to deep sweep the bathrooms, leaving me to tend to our children as the rest of the house fell into total mess…
24.Why did the author request a housecleaning service for Mother’s Day
A.To reduce her husband’s financial burden.
B.To force her husband to do some housework.
C.To treat herself to a break from household chores.
D.To experience a pricy service for a special occasion.
25.What does the underlined word “unwavering” in the 2nd paragraph mean
A.Unyielding. B.Undemanding. C.Unbearable. D.Unreasonable.
26.What did the author’s husband decide to do the day before Mother’s Day
A.He arranged for the service as a gift.
B.He searched relevant information online.
C.He determined to clean the bathroom himself.
D.He purchased a necklace instead as an apology.
27.How did the author feel about her husband’s final solution
A.She felt completely satisfied with it.
B.She felt being ignored with her real needs.
C.She was relieved to see her problem solved.
D.She was disappointed but tried to understand him.

Coral reefs are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. They’re also in serious danger——climate change and other threats are killing them off. But researchers have come up with an invention they think could help the reefs: 3D-printed corals.
At the heart of reef ecosystems lies a symbiosis (共生关系) between corals and algae (藻类). Corals use light and they’re photosynthesizing The algae inside corals’ tissues make use of the light to generate energy, and that energy is then transferred to the coral animal host. That animal host, in return, transfers certain by-products to the algae, so they have a symbiosis going on.
This bond between algae and corals is what makes reefs so incredibly productive. Because of this symbiosis, corals have evolved complex skeletal (骨骼的) and tissue structures for collecting sunlight which usually fades rapidly. Through the skeleton, light is pumped and guided into deeper, otherwise shaded areas.
Scientists copied some tricks that corals use. They imaged corals to analyze their skeletal and tissue makeup and then used a 3D bioprinter to build a complicated structure that mimics real corals. The printed corals were made of biomaterials like cellulose (纤维素) and had algae planted in them.
The researchers replicated coral structure so well that the algae grew very quickly—— up to 100 times more densely than they normally grow in the lab. The 3D-printed creation could be used as a medium to grow algae to produce bioenergy and also as a tool for studying the coral-algae symbiosis.
Of course, there are many other ways this technology can be further scaled and improved to create something like artificial corals in the future. So this is just the first step, where they created the animal host, but they are now continuing to further replicate this animal-algal symbiosis and developing model systems. Eventually, it would be nice that this can have direct applications in coral reef restoration.
28.What is the function of the algae inside corals’ tissues
A.To perform photosynthesis. B.To pump light into shaded areas.
C.To produce energy needed by their host. D.To build complex skeletal structures.
29.What do algae get in the symbiotic relationship with corals
A.Stronger tissues. B.Certain by-products.
C.Biomaterials like cellulose. D.An animal host.
30.Scientists use 3D-printed coral structure to _________ .
A.make a study of the coral-algae symbiosis
B.strengthen the bond between algae and corals
C.change ocean conditions for corals to survive
D.remove the harmful algae inside the tissues of corals
31.What is the best title of this passage
A.Fantastic Coexistence of Corals and Algae
B.Corals Evolving Symbiosis to Avoid Extinction
C.Coral Reefs: Productive but Endangered Ecosystem
D.3D-Printed Technology Hopefully Saving Coral Reefs

A new product from Google may help people solve their sleep problems, but some privacy rights groups are concerned. Google showed off its newest Nest Hub home assistant device(设备)on Tuesday. In addition to recognizing your voice, showing pictures, videos, news and weather, it can also track your sleep.
The basic model costs about $100 and the sleep-tracking technology will be available for free for the rest of 2021. The sleep tracker makes Google’s product different from a similar home assistant from Amazon.
If you put the Nest Hub beside your bed, it can follow your sleep. That is because of a new computer chip called Soli, which can sense motion(运动). Some people may like the new technology because they would not have to wear another device to bed. Some companies make products people can only wear on their wrist to track their sleep.
Google says the new Nest Hub will create reports each week that show how long and how well a person sleeps. It will also show if they snore(打鼾), cough or wake up often. The company said it studies 15,000 people over the course of 110,000 nights to develop the technology.
For people who want to know more about their sleep, the device sounds like a good idea. But, people who pay attention to privacy are worried about what Google might do with the information it is gathering.
Google recently bought FitBit, a company that makes a health tracker people can wear on their wrist. Technology experts think Google may find a way for the Nest Hub to work with the FitBit. Google says the sleep tracker has a lot of privacy protections. For example, it will only work if the user turns it on. The company also said, “it will not use a person’s sleep information to try to sell advertising.”
32.What can be learned about the Nest Hub
A.It is designed for users to wear on their wrist.
B.It cannot offer information about weather condition.
C.It is a sleep tracker developed by Amazon.
D.It can provide some data about users’ sleep.
33.Which of the following might be a concern about the Nest Hub
A.Disturbing sleep. B.Letting out personal privacy.
C.Lacking advanced technology. D.Worsening personal physical problems.
34.What is expected to happen after Google bought FitBit
A.The Nest Hub will be improved.
B.Google will give up its technology.
C.Sleep information will be made full use of.
D.Privacy protections will be strengthened.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Tech Companies Care About Privacy
B.Google’s Technology Makes Your Sleep Safer
C.A Device Has Been Made for Sleep Research
D.Google’s New Device May Track Your Sleep
The tendency to engage in negative self-evaluation affects almost everyone. Listening to your loud inner voice is a habit. But there’s a good reason to work on silencing self-criticism, which has been found to worsen depression, anxiety, disordered eating and etc. 36 We asked experts to share their favorite ways to overcome critical self-talk.
1. Investigate the origins.
The first step to stop self-criticism is understanding where the thoughts originated, says Tiffany Green, a psychotherapist in Chicago. When her clients say negative things about themselves, she often asks them, “Where did this come from Who was the first person you heard say this about you ” The response tends to be revealing: maybe their mom called them lazy, or their grandmother told them they needed to lose weight. 37
2. Set up a self-criticism jar.
Every time you catch yourself engaging in a critical thought, throw a coin or piece of paper into a jar. The goal in the beginning is to fill the jar with lots of coins, 38 Over the next three to six months, however, you should notice that you’re adding to it less frequently. Having a visual way to monitor your progress can be motivating and rewarding, Green says.
3. 39
One of Turow’s self-talk strategies is called “spot the success.” Every night before you go to bed, write down 10 things you did that day that benefited you, or somebody else. “No item is too small. You helped your friend, you got up early, you took exercise regularly,” she notes. “It generates this sense in your brain, like, ‘I am doing these good things.’”
4. Look for the gentle lessons.
Self-criticism can sometimes contain important information and even prove helpful, Turow says. You might, for instance, be hard on yourself for not keeping in good touch with your friends. That’s valuable information. If you’re upset with yourself for not making it to the gym, that could signal a desire for a healthier lifestyle. Turow advises noticing the criticism gently, and then learning from it. 40 Instead of “You’re not good at keeping in touch.” try “This is really important to me. I wonder how I can make it happen more often.”
A.Celebrate your wins.
B.Correcting negative thoughts isn’t easy.
C.you can work your way up to the positive ones later.
D.Fortunately, plenty of tools can help us talk more kindly to ourselves.
E.Shift how you talk to yourself, and change the message into a better one.
F.because that’s a sign that you’ve increased your awareness of your thought patterns.
G.The experience is a helpful way to separate yourself from critical thoughts, she says, rather than accepting them as your own.

When we are little kids, birthday parties are momentous occasions. They are our time to shine, and we love everything about them: the balloons, the games, the cake, the gifts, and so on.
After reading cool stories about police officers solving mysteries, Allen Miller thought the police were awesome, hoping to become one of them! So, when he had to choose a theme for his seventh birthday party—he went with his favorite: the police! And all he wanted for his birthday party was a model police car. He excitedly invited some of his friends and anxiously awaited the day. Unfortunately, none of them could make it to the party due to various reasons,
Allen’s mom Rachel wrestled with the challenging decision: should she cancel the party and save Allen the embarrassment of an empty party room He had been looking forward to the party and talking about it daily, so it would break his heart to cancel it.
Officer Frank Smith, who had already planned with Rachel and agreed to show up at the party, heard from Rachel that it might be canceled due to low attendance. That’s when he decided to save the day—he is a police officer after all! His duty is to serve and protect, and he decided to protect Allen from having a bad day, and serve him the most amazing seventh birthday party! Officer Smith got the whole local police to join in. “We like to be involved in our community. It’s not just about enforcing (执行) the law. We like to be there in the good times as well,” he explained to Rachel.
On the day of Allen’s party, Officer Smith picked up Rachel and Allen in his police car. The boy didn’t know where they were going, but was excited. They stopped at Town Hall, and officer Smith led them into the meeting room where a group of policemen were waiting to wish Allen a happy birthday.

Text 10
M: In 2002, Emily and David Robinson made a decision to leave their high-paying jobs to pursue a life devoted to social service. This choice came about after they volunteered at a community center where people shared resources and supported each other. The experience moved the Robinsons deeply and in 2010, they established Global Sanitation Initiative, which aims to provide clean water and cleanliness facilities to poor communities worldwide. GSI projects are carried out by volunteers and rely on donated materials and expertise. The Robinsons firmly believe that community members should be actively involved in improving their own living conditions, so people receiving GSI's aid are also expected to contribute to the construction and maintenance of the water and cleanliness systems. In line with their philosophy of self-help, the Robinsons wanted to make sure that aid was not just given out freely. GSI services are offered at certain prices, ensuring affordability without compromising the organization's non-profit status. Currently, there is a global network of volunteers supporting GSI's mission. Why not join our efforts to help Global Sanitation Initiative bring about positive change around the world (停20秒)

I would not have to make the calls, get multiple quotes (报价), research and compare each service, arrange payment and schedule the appointment. The real gift I wanted was to be relieved of the emotional labor of a single task that had been nagging (唠叨) at the back of my mind. The clean house would simply be a bonus.(对我来说,礼物并不是打扫卫生本身,而是这一次我不用再负责家务了。

Eventually, it would be nice that this can have direct applications in coral reef restoration.

When her clients say negative things about themselves, she often asks them, “Where did this come from Who was the first person you heard say this about you ” The response tends to be revealing: maybe their mom called them lazy, or their grandmother told them they needed to lose weight. The experience指前面的事例,同时she指代Green。
38.根据上文“Every time you catch yourself engaging in a critical thought, throw a coin or piece of paper into a jar. The goal in the beginning is to fill the jar with lots of coins(每当你发现自己陷入批判性思维时,就把一枚硬币或一张纸扔进罐子里。一开始的目标是用很多硬币填满罐子)”可知,起初罐内的硬币数量很多,是对思维模式刻意训练的证明。故F选项“因为这表明你已经提高了对自己思维模式的意识”符合语境,故选F。

40.根据上文“Self-criticism can sometimes contain important information and even prove helpful, Turow says. You might, for instance, be hard on yourself for not keeping in good touch with your friends. That’s valuable information. If you’re upset with yourself for not making it to the gym, that could signal a desire for a healthier lifestyle. Turow advises noticing the criticism gently, and then learning from it.(特罗说,自我批评有时可以包含重要信息,甚至证明是有益的。
