【方法运用】
25.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Some kids play sports. They run hundreds of laps, and tackle, kick, or swing. Some kids do makeover parties. They pool their fashion magazines and organize their own spa hair salons. And some kids are computer geeks. Their programming ability is a thing of wonder.
Me I had the spelling bee (拼字比赛). The bee was my World Series. And what happened during a Spelling Bee remained fresh in my memory.
I trained every day on my front steps after school, the dictionary pages rippling softly in the breeze. I formed a habit carrying around my buddies Longman, Webster, and Oxford.
As soon as I opened my eyes on Friday morning, I felt the hairs on my arm stand up. I glanced at my alarm clock—it was only 6:27. I usually woke up at 7:01, which meant I had an extra thirty-four minutes to study. Starting with the word “judgment” which I always spelt as “J-U-D-G-M-A-N-T”, I went over several words.
To calm my butterflies in my stomach, I reminded myself that I was one of the best spellers in my class. I was not ambitious enough to want to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee or anything—I just wanted to win the bee at Meadowbrook Middle School, so that I could defeat my main enemy, Nathan Fortescue.
Nathan thought he was a better speller than I was, but he didn’t even study words. He just read tons of science and math books. Really, he wasn’t a speller at heart—he was a mathematician. Nathan and I had nothing in common except being good spellers, but since he was a good speller without even trying, it didn’t count. I bet if you gave Nathan a modern literature word like “denouement”, he’d be out on the first round.
The Spelling Bee wasn’t until after lunch, so all I did in the morning was stare at the clock and wondered how seconds could possibly pass by so slowly. I sneaked away from lunch early so I could get in a few extra minutes of study time.

My mum died on a cold and rainy December morning. The dark clouds and constant light rain over her Cape Cod neighbourhood fit our sadness as my brothers and sisters and I arranged with the local funeral (葬礼) home for Mum’s last departure from her beloved house on the edge of the river.
All five of us were there, having been alerted (警觉) earlier that week. As soon as we had gotten “The Call”, we had immediately flown or driven from our homes in California, Florida, Georgia and New York to the house by the river.
As I joined my brothers and sisters at the house on the Cape, I felt oddly peaceful. Though I was afraid to lose my mother, I wasn’t anxious about the process. I knew that Mum had prepared well for her death. All we had to do was be present for her and each other during this final stage. She had done everything else.
Mum was a born teacher and a natural organizer. When she had received the diagnosis (诊断) of incurable cancer that September, she had planned her death as practically as she had planned her busy life as a wife, mother and professional.
Mum did think fondly of her neighbours and friends. Even though she had declined to share her remaining time with them, she wanted to acknowledge their friendly care and express her lasting affection for them. So Mum had asked my older sister to purchase, on her behalf, a case of wine. The small bottles were to be decorated with ribbons (缎带) and delivered by us in person, after Mum’s death, to those neighbours who had been her favourite local companions.
Accordingly, in the early afternoon, as the cold morning rain gave way to a watery blue sky, all five of us set out to walk through the neighbourhood together, braving the cold air. Taking turns carrying the heavy boxes, we visited every house. Together, we carried the news of her death, that final gift of beribboned bottles, and her instruction to her friends: “Please use this Champagne to toast to our friendship.”

On a cold winter day years ago, I slipped in the snow in the wilderness and broke my legs. As I lay on the ground, unable to move my body, I believed I was fated to freeze to death. My dog, Becky, however, didn't run away. Instead, she determined to save me. She lay on top of me to keep me warm for many hours, barking continually until help arrived, long after I lost consciousness. Eventually, I was saved.
A few cold winters later, Becky was discovered to have a baseball-sized lump (肿块) on her belly. Before long, my husband Bob took Becky for surgery to remove the lump. To take care of my babies, I had to stay at home, filled with anxious thoughts. After her surgery, when Bob left to pick her up, it was snowing heavily. Becky could barely walk, so Bob carried her.
They couldn't get in the door easily because Becky was wearing a big, hard plastic cone(圆锥体) around her neck to prevent her from licking her sutures (伤口缝合线). I held the door wide open. She was sad and crying. There was snow inside her cone. It took over five minutes to get them in because Becky shook her head wildly to try to remove the cone. The sound of the con e hitting the door made her panic and cry even louder.
Once inside, she was so frightened that she kept her tail between her legs. She thought she had done something wrong. Her expression said, “I’m sorry for what I did that led to me having to wear this.” Because of her surgery, Becky wouldn't take her special treat of a cube of cheese. She wouldn’t sit or lie down. All she did was stand and cry. “How long will she have to wear it ” I asked. “Two weeks,” Bob replied.
“It’s my turn to take good care of her, just as she did for me years ago,” I thought.
Paragraph 1:
Then, I stayed with her on the floor, helping her get through her firs tough night.

Mama and I spent morning s cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house. Mama said all dust was due to the drought. It was dust y everywhere. Dust covered our clothes. We had to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drove the automobile because Papa feared the dust from the road would ruin its front lights and horn (喇叭).
When my sister, Faye, and I walked to school, we wore handkerchiefs over our mouths so we didn’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air was so bad that they closed the school, we stayed home and helped Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always found a way in.
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After church, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Faye and I played in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped—it felt good. The heat had been building since dawn.
Then Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, real quick now!”
I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted. “I’ll warn Papa.”
Faye sprinted toward the house. The storm hit so fast, I barely saw her climb the porch steps. Fine sand beat my face and in an instant the day turned into night. I stumbled over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back.
The dirt and sand stung my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I felt my way toward the automobile and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Papa was still out there! I needed to help him find the automobile.

参考答案
1.
As soon as I shut the classroom door behind me, I heard a voice. “Hi, Olivia. You were looking a little pale in math this morning. I’m glad the rose is back in your cheeks. I was afraid you might miss the spelling bee.” “Oh, wouldn’t you just love that ” “Not really. I enjoy a bit of competition. Is that the list of words you’re studying Funny, I don’t think I have one of those.” I was so irritated that I couldn’t concentrate on reviewing my list, but it didn’t matter—I knew all the words by heart, anyway. Within three minutes, the rest of the class filled in, and it was noisier than a five-year-old’s birthday party. I finished taking a mental picture of “scalawag” just as Ms. Hawking walked into the room.
“Now it’s time for the Spelling Bee!” Ms. Hawking said brightly. “Is everybody ready ” “No!” the class groaned—everyone except Nathan and me, of course. My class was full of pretty bad spellers. After six times around the circle, there were only two kids left, Nathan and me. I cocked my head toward Nathan, beaming with the knowledge of my impending triumph. Nathan’s next word was “judgment”, “J-U-D-G-M-E-N-T. Judgment.” “That is correct!” Like a zombie. “Hey,” says Nathan. “Are you OK ” He smiled and stuck out his hand to shake mine. “Judgment,” I mumbled weakly. He shrugged, “Eoin Colfer is my favorite author, and the other day the word ‘judgment’ was in one of his books I’m reading. So I guess I just absorbed it.” “Eoin Colfer is my favorite author, too! I thought you hated reading books without numbers.” I laughed. Nathan smiled. OK, so maybe Nathan and I did have a few things in common.

We hugged, and cried, and laughed, with neighbour after neighbour. We gave each special person Mum's last gift, a gift that reflected her unique flair for life and honoured the strength of their mutual affection. And my mother the teacher taught me one more lesson. As I walked in her shoes and hugged in her place, I felt her love flow through me to each grieving friend. With it flowed my love for her and my heartbreak at her death. And, with each hug, an answering affection poured from each person. My breaking heart opened as 1 absorbed through my sorrow, the joy of a life well lived and friends well loved.
As the five of us returned to the house, we saw, against the backdrop of the grey sky,a breathtakingly beautiful rainbow. It made us all laugh. Obviously. Mum had orchestrated the whole thing from her new seat in the heavens, "Stop the rain so my children can deliver those bottles without getting wet." she probably instructed. The storm clouds had obediently dispersed, just long enough for us to fulfill Mum's last request and, in the process, learn one more lesson about whole-hearted love. Clearly, a rainbow that arched over the whole sky was the perfect way for Mum to express her approval.

As the night unfolded, we both found solace in our shared companionship, eagerly awaiting the day when the confining cone would be lifted.
Eventually, the day arrived when Bob took her to have her sutures removed. The moment she emerged from the clinic, her tail danced with pure delight, the cone’s encirclement now a forgotten memory. I wept with pride, witnessing her renewed vigor as she explored the backyard, her resilience echoing the resilience she had shown on that frigid winter when she saved my life. Determined to repay her kindness, I cherished every passing moment, showering her with the identical love and support she had once given me. Our bond, forged through trials and gratitude, was a testament to the profound connection that transcended language, exemplifying the unyielding bond between a heart filled with gratitude and an ever-loyal friend.

Staring at the automobile, I got an idea. I remembered Papa had always kept a flashlight in the glove compartment for emergencies. My hands fumbled through the glove compartment, pushing aside papers and old maps until my fingers closed around the cold metal of the flashlight. I quickly turned it on and off, praying the beam would cut through the darkness and catch Papa’s attention. With each flash, I shouted his name, hoping against hope that he could see or hear me. Then, through the chaos, I saw a faint figure moving towards the car. It was Papa! I kept the flashlight flashing in his direction until he reached the automobile. He opened the door and fell into the seat, panting heavily and covered in dirt.
Papa nodded, “Good. We’ll wait out the storm here.” His voice was reassuring, even though his face was etched with worry. We sat in the automobile, listening to the wind rage outside, knowing the thick metal of the car would keep us safe. “I’m proud of you, Iris,” Papa said, his hand resting on my shoulder. “You kept your head and got us through this.” Finally, when the storm passed, we emerged from the car, our home and fields dusted but standing firm, ready to start anew.
