Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. My spirits ebb, as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. “Just wait,” a neighbour advised. “You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.”
And look, on 3 May that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and greens. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark twisted branches stretch out in unpruned(未经修剪的) abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled with the scent of apple.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches(门廊;走廊). These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you ” she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he warned. Soon half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship (相识的人/熟人)and shared wonder. I couldn’t help recalling Robert Frost’s words:
The trees that have it in their pent-up(被压抑的) buds
To darken nature and be summer woods
One thaw(解冻/关系的缓和) led to another. Just the other day I saw one of my neighbours at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune(修剪) that apple tree again.”
24. By saying that “my spirits ebb” in paragraph 1, the author means that __________.
A. he feels relieved B. he is tired
C. he is surprised D. he feels blue
25. The apple tree mentioned in the passage is most likely to __________.
A. be appealing only to the author
B. have been abandoned by its original owner
C. be regarded as a delight in the neighbourhood
D. have been neglected by everyone in the community
26. According to paragraph 4, why did the neighbours open their windows and step onto their porches
A. They wanted to get to know the author.
B. They were concerned about the safety of the tree.
C. They wanted to prevent the author from pruning the tree.
D. They were surprised that someone unknown was pruning the tree.
27. It can be inferred that the author’s neighbour mentioned in the last paragraph most cared about __________.
A. when spring would arrive B. how to pass the long winter
C. the pruning of the apple tree D. the neighbourhood gathering

Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website Book turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.
Members go on the site and register (登记) the books they own and would like to share. Book Crossing provides an identification number (识别码) to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of Book Crossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. Book Crossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E— mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
Book Crossing is part of a trend (趋势) among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual (虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty—five countries.

A. To explain what they are.
B. To introduce Book Crossing.

30. What will a Book Crosser do with a book after reading it
A. Keep it safe in his bookcase. B. Mail it back to its owner.
CMeet other readers to discuss it. D. Pass it on to another reader.
31. What’s people’s attitude towards “Book Crossing”
A. Negative B. indifferent C. DoubtfulD. favorable

Not unlike the wings of airplanes, the blades(叶片) of wind turbines(涡轮机) need to be kept ice-free in order to function properly. Scientists have now developed an inexpensive method of using drones(无人机) to apply an eco-friendly anti-icing coating(涂层) to those blades.
If too much ice builds up on wind turbine blades, they will turn more slowly, producing less energy. What’s more, if an equal amount of ice isn’t present on all three blades, the turbine’s balance may be thrown off, leading to increased wear and possibly even disastrous failure.
There are anti-icing heating systems that can be built into the blades, but these may be beyond the financial means of many wind farm(风电场) operators. The same can be said for using helicopters to apply ice-prevention chemicals.
Seeking a more economical but still effective alternative, scientists from two branches of Germany’s Fraunhofer research group recently started looking to drones. The research project is known as “TURBO: Temporary coating by means of drones—Icing protection of wind turbines as a case study”.
In the current version of the resulting system, a hexacopter drone is equipped with a small pump that delivers anti-icing liquid. The liquid is sprayed(喷洒) at high pressure—which is just 0.3 mm wide—producing tiny droplets with a diameter of 100 micrometers.
Using this setup, the drone has successfully been used to apply coatings of the droplets onto the edges of wind turbine blades, even at wind speeds of up to 35 km/h(22 mph). Once solidified(固化/凝固), those coatings prevent ice formation for several weeks before a fresh coating is applied.
The scientists are now seeking industry partners to help commercialize9(商业化) the TURBO technology. It could also find use in the maintenance(维护) of power lines, the upper levels of tall buildings, or other things that are difficult to reach by conventional means.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Problems caused by icing. B.The process of ice formation.
C.Disasters brought about by drones. D.The function of wind turbines.
33.Which word can best describe anti-icing heating systems
A.Ineffective.B.Unnecessary.C.Expensive.D.Dangerous.
34.What can we learn about the TURBO technology from the last paragraph
A.It has a wider range of applications.
B.It is a relatively traditional approach.
C.It can solve the problem once and for all(一劳永逸).
D.It is more costly than using ice-prevention chemicals.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.The Advantages of Using Wind Energy
B.Drones Protect Wind Turbines From Icing
C.Wind Turbines Remove Ice on Their Own
D.A Major Breakthrough in Drone Technology

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling:“How stupid you are! You're good at nothing.”David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs.Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.
But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later,David handed in his story. He didn't give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “ well done"from Mrs. Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home , he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs.Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs.Brown's encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右。2.请按照如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

读后续写
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing."
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son a stupid boy, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I'll never say such things to him again. Instead, I'll find out what he ’s good at and encourage him." The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy , David felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.

On the second floor, on the left as you go up the stairs, is the No.2 Reading Room, which has books written in foreign languages.

There is also a Reference Materials Center on the third floor which is for teachers only. Each student is given five library cards for borrowing books and one for magazines. Of the five cards for books, only one can be used to borrow works of history. Books can be kept for up to a month and magazines for two weeks.
