Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That's right― during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin.
But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them.“Running at an amazing pace," Cassidy told Runner's World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!”
At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot(赃物)in a backyard.
No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they’d seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site—and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush ... and right into the arms of campus police, who'd joined the chase shortly behind the runners.
The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise.“Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,”Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer.“But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”
24. Why do the group members gather together
A. To do some stretching. B. To have a regular run.
C. To deliver a lecture. D. To cover some topics.
25. What does the underlined word“sprinted”in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Dashed. B. Pushed. C. Jumped. D. Escaped.
26. We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to____ .
A. the assistance of the runners B. the owner of the row house
C. the campus police on patrol D. the joint efforts of the people
27. Which of the following best describes Cassidy
A. Athletic and generous. B. Courageous and ambitious.
C. Helpful and humorous. D. Thoughtful and demanding.

A lot of media attention has focused on the harmful effects of working long hours. Logging excessive hours at work is rooted in the work culture of the West. From Bay Area startups to various multinationals, their idea is centered around how many hours you can clock at work. It is assumed that the more hours you put into your job, the more career prospects you’ll get out of it.
A new study in Europe challenged this assumption, however. From their analysis of nearly 52, 000 people from 36 European countries, they concluded that it’s not the number of hours you clock at the office, but how intensely you work during those hours, that affects career-related outcomes. Researchers found people, with similar jobs and education levels, were more likely to suffer poorer well-being and inferior career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods. According to Hans Frankort, a senior lecturer in strategy at Cass Business School, the research suggests career benefits of excessive work effort-longer hours or harder work-may never materialize.
Employers should reduce work intensity rather than try to control excessive hours, the authors concluded. “Compared with overtime, work intensity predicts much greater reductions in well-being and career benefits,” Hans Frankort said.
There is also a range of things for employees to do to ensure they’re working smarter, and not just harder. Beth Belle Cooper, a former content creator at Buffer, the social media scheduling app, suggests taking more breaks to refresh your mind and reset your attention span. She also recommends taking naps to consolidate new information in the brain and help you avoid burnout. You might also consider completely unplugging from work more consistently, and for longer periods of time. This is what Sean McCabe and his small team does when they take a week-long vacation every seventh week.
28. What is common in the work culture of western countries
A. Having bright career prospects. B. Spending long hours at work.
C. Starting up one’s own business. D. Earning long paid days off work.
29. What can be the effect of working intensely according to the text
A. It leads to more career challenges.
B. It brings out greater promotion opportunity.
C. It reduces one’s work passion and efficiency.
D. It worsens one’s health conditions and job outlook.
30. What is advisable to work smarter according to Sean Mccabe
A. Requiring breaks occasionally. B. Taking days off work regularly.
C. Catching up on sleep properly. D. Refreshing one’s brain constantly.
31. What does the text mainly intend to tell us
A. Working intensively is necessary. B. Working whole-heartedly is useless.
C. Working more diligently does more harm. D. Working more wisely brings more benefits.
D
Can people who understand the emotions of others better interpret emotions conveyed through music A new study by an international team of researchers suggests the abilities are linked.
The study’s results provide a foundation for future research that could test the impact of socially engaged music listening on social cognitive ability, and whether listening to music can be added to therapeutic (治疗的) techniques used in social skills training for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (孤独症谱系障碍).
The findings were published recently in a scientific journal of the American Psychological Association. The study was led by Benjamin A.Tabak, assistant professor of psychology. “Empathy (共情) is most often thought of in the context of social interactions, but there are many other forms of social communication, including music,” Tabak said. “Music can convey meaning and emotion and also bring emotional responses, but what is responsible for its emotional power is poorly understood.”
Tabak and his colleagues wanted to test their theory about empathy and music. For the purposes of this study, they measured the ability to correctly understand others’ thoughts and feelings — empathic accuracy — and the extent to which one feels the emotions that another feels.
“We thought it would be interesting to study whether people who more accurately under-stand others’ thoughts and feelings might also be more accurate in understanding what musicians are intending to convey through music,” Tabak said. “Similarly, we wanted to know whether people who tend to feel the emotions that others are experiencing also tend to feel the emotions conveyed through music.”
The initial set of findings found support for both hypotheses. In particular, the results suggest that empathic accuracy as a skill extends beyond interpersonal interactions into music. Tabak believes that the study provides tentative support for the theory that music is first and foremost a social behavior that gradually develops to help individuals connect with others and better understand and manage their social environment.
32. What can the study result be used to do
A. Be the basis for the next study. B. Apply music to social skills training.
C. Decide the music suitable for autism. D. Test the impact of music on emotions.
33. About the link between music and emotions, what needs further understanding
A. The effect of music. B. The academic support.
C. The function of music. D. The emotions music expresses.
34. What is Tabak’s attitude towards the study
A. Ignorant. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Pessimistic.
35. Which can be the best title for the text
A. The Social Behavior Music Reflects
B. The Ability To Accurately Understand Empathy
C. Research Will Set Foundation For Further Research
D. Research Shows The Role Empathy May Play In Music

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Many of our beliefs about the universe are based on inductive reasoning, also known as the 56 (science) model. This means of arriving at the truth requires the observation of concrete events 57 (follow) by the development of a theory to explain what has been observed. In other words, it is a way to proceed from the particular to the general, from the specific to the abstract. However, it is in the nature of scientists to inquire into every possibility, 58 this means they often discover things no one has ever seen or noticed before. Our generalized theories therefore never cease 59 (change).
In fact, most of our new knowledge 60 (gain) by the observation of things we have never seen before. Before the first black swan was seen, the assumption was that all swans were white, 61 is known as the“black swan theory”. How could we have known otherwise There will always be“unknown unknowns”such as black swans, but some people criticize those who dare to suggest their 62 (exist). We should always be objective and question 63 we think we know.
The world in the future is bound to be different from now. However much we understand, there will always be 64 remote possibility of discovering“a black swan”. Accordingly, our
65 (comprehend) of the world will change. Therefore, we should keep up with new developments in all domains of knowledge---“black swans”can change history.

My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her own lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. She picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table. “There you go,” she said. “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you ”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient. I was amazed it was still going.
“Yes,” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box and stood up. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe (滑动屏幕). “What do you mean swipe ” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry and upset.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡相应位置作答。

第一节:应用文写作(满分15 分)
Dear fellow students,
As the president of the school student union, I call upon all of you to embrace lifelong learning, which is essential in today’s society.
The rapid development of technology and the ever-changing job market require individuals to constantly acquire new knowledge and skills. By embracing lifelong learning, we can stay relevant, enhance our competitiveness, and adapt to the changing environment. Therefore,we can adopt various methods to achieve lifelong learning, such as attending courses, workshops, reading books and articles, participating in online learning platforms, and seeking guidance from mentors.
Let’s make continuous learning a part of our lives and benefit ourselves and society.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “This time I’ll hold your finger and show you how much pressure to use. Guess what, it took me a while to get the hang of swiping.” added I. I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared. “I want a selfie with you. Show me how to use the camera!” My heart sank a bit, but she didn’t need a lot of help and we sent her friend Emily a photo of us both laughing. “I can’t wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily. “Thank you for your patience, Tom.”
I was not feeling so hopeless any more now. Great-grandma’s spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92-year-old lady could learn new skills, then so could I. I had no doubt that I would find something I liked even more. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it. I headed for home with a smile on my face and a whole lot of love for my amazing great-grandmother. My great-grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from.

W: I haven't decided yet. Of course, it would be easy for me to stay here in San Francisco or go back home to Detroit. But I may go to Chicago.
M: That would be a big move.
W: How about you
M: Well, I applied to five magazines. Last Friday, I had an interview with Global Focus Magazine. W; How did it go
M: Not so well. I think they're looking for people with rich experience.
W: Have you had any other interviews
M: No, not yet. It seems that so many people want to be editors these days. There aren't so many jobs available right now. I hope I will have a job lined up by graduation.
W: What will you do if you still can't find a job before graduation
M: I'll begin working on a master’s degree.
W: Good luck!

I would like to give you more information about this painting. It's called Impression, Sunrise. And it was drawn in 1872 by the famous French painter Claude Monet. The artist was inspired by a very nice foggy, early morning in a port town in the south of France. He spent five months finishing the picture. As you can see, it's quite big, but doesn't have too many things on it. In the central part of it are two boats painted in black. There are some people in the boats, but we can't tell for certain if they're men or women, or children. Monet used some bright colors in the painting as well because he also wanted to show the joy from the rising sun. In the distance, we can see outlines of ships, and also their blue shadows in the water. The ships can't be seen very clearly because the fog covers them, creating a sense of mystery around the whole scenery. This is a smart decision by Monet to display a moment of secrecy in the middle of a cheerful early morning environment. It makes the viewers curious about the painting so that they would spend more time with it.
