The Spring Festival
Date:
The Spring Festival falls on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar and usually occurs somewhere between January 20th and February 20th.
Origin:
According to the most acknowledged legend, there once lived a fierce monster named Nian. People covered the doors and windows with red paper, wore red clothes and set off firecrackers to frighten the monster away.
Activities:
Before the festival
People usually follow the practice of thoroughly cleaning the house to sweep away bad luck and embrace the future.
On the Spring Festival Eve
The whole family gathers around the table to have the most hearty feast of a year, since Chinese consider it a time for family reunion.
During the festival
During the Spring Festival, friends and relatives will visit each other bearing sincere greetings as well as carefully selected gifts.
文化知识——春节小知识
Meaning:
Chinese people value the Spring Festival highly as the most momentous occasion in a year. Much like the celebration of the New Year in the western world, the Chinese New Year is all about ringing the old year out and the new year in. It is comparable to Christmas in the western world.
