Aron Lee Ralston was born in a middle class American household. His family moved to Colorado when Aron was 12 years old and this move laid the foundation for his love for hiking around the canyons (峡谷).
Aron’s life changed on April 26th, 2003, upon facing the event that threatened to take his life, and almost took it. He was hiking through the Blue John Canyon and he accidentally displaced a huge rock he was climbing down from. The rock caught his right hand in between itself and the canyon wall.
Aron had decided to go on the adventure alone and hadn’t informed anybody about it. So, when he was unable to free his right hand, he felt he would be stuck forever in there. He tried hard to get his hand out but failed, and screaming for help was of no use either. Moreover, he didn’t want to wear himself out as shouting for help would take a lot of energy, which was essential (重要) for surviving the unfortunate event for a long period of time.
After a couple of days, he knew it was impossible for him to set himself free from an 800-pound rock. He decided to cut off his right hand. He had a blunt (钝的) pocket knife with him, which wasn’t sharp enough to cut through the bone. Some time passed and his water and food supply ended. He carved his name, date of birth and a possible date of death on the stone.
But luckily he got a strange idea that he could use the torque (扭转力) and his bones to separate his arm from his body. With the help of his very limited tool, he finally succeeded and walked out of the canyon, bleeding in large amounts. Fortunately, a holidaying family saw him and gave him food and water, and then took him to a hospital.
After the accident, Aron got a prosthetic limb (假肢) and continued mountain climbing, considering the accident as a “turning point in his life”.
4. What happened to Aron while he was hiking
A. He was too tired and unable to climb
B. He suffered a knife wound in his right leg
C. He accidentally fell down the mountain.
D. He got a hand stuck between a rock and the canyon wall
5. Why did Aron stop calling for help
A. He found a way to save himself. B. He needed to save energy.
C. He gave up hope for survival D. He met a family on vacation.
6. How did Aron save himself
A. He removed the huge stone.
B. He cut off his arm with a knife.
C. He was pulled out of there by his family.
D. He was rescued by people from a hospital.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Aron
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Independent and generous.
C. Adventurous and determined D. Responsible and professional.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. C

On August 8, 2021, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its first assessment of climate science since 2013. The news was not good. The report stated that this past decade was the hottest in 125,000 years and that the atmospheric carbon levels are the highest in at least 2 million years. Glaciers are melting faster than any time in over 2,000 years, and ocean levels are rising at twice the rate since 2006.
At the current pace, the researchers expect global temperatures to rise by at least 1.5°, compared to pre-industrial levels, within the next 20 years. The temperature increases will result in significant changes to the planet’s water cycle. Areas that currently receive a lot of rain will get significantly more, while dry regions will become increasingly likely to droughts.
The IPCC’s findings come as no surprise to the millions of people worldwide currently feeling the impacts of climate-related disasters. America and many European countries are battling wildfires. Meanwhile, an unprecedented (史无前例的) week-long storm in July 2021 caused flash floods and mudslides in Western Europe. Climate change is even impacting the Earths coldest and most remote regions which experienced the first rainfall event in recorded history.
The situation may sound hopeless. However, many experts believe it is still not too late to turn things around, if we all act now. While governments need to do their share by introducing and obey stricter carbon emission laws, individuals can also help. Driving less, conserving water, and reducing electricity usage are some great ways to start. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle will help conserve natural resources and energy. It will also save you and your community. Be sure to start doing your part to save our beautiful home today!

C. To inform readers climate change is severe.
D. To report ocean levels are rising higher.
9. What may lead to great changes to the planet’s water cycle
A. The rise of global temperatures. B. The fast development of industry.
C. The heavy rainfall of the earth. D. The terrible droughts in dry regions.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Effects of climate change. B. Facts of rainfall disasters.
C. Losses caused by natural disasters. D. Weather phenomena in many regions.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Fighting against climate change is relatively simple.
B. Stricter carbon emission laws has been tightened up.
C. The author is opposed to consuming natural resources.
D. The author urges immediate action on climate change.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. D

An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities , researchers found in a primary study.
Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to put in electrodes (电极). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher.
King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect words and sentences on 56, 000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language model to databases from four institutions that included brain activity from 169 volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG) (脑磁图).
Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1, 000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top 10 guesses, the researchers found.
“The new study is decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees, “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”
12. What is the main advantage of the new technology
A. Avoiding dangerous operations on patients.
B. Helping patients with communication problems.
C. Providing a path to communicate with others.
D. Freeing patients from risky brain operations.
13. Whom might be the AI be beneficial to
A. People unable to communicate normally. B. People who can’t move around.
C. People who are unconscious. D. People unable to eat.
14. What does Jean-Rémi King think of the new study
A. Disappointing. B. Surprising. C. Promising. D. Exciting.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. A New Study on Artificial Intelligence B. The Application of MEG Technology
C. A New Way to Decode Speech D. A Solution to Communication Problems
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C

Take care of our glasses. If you’ve been wearing glasses from early childhood, you were probably taught how to take care of them, but you may have grown lazy and stopped paying attention to taking care of your glasses. ____18____ Wipe the lenses with a soft, cotton cloth everyday, and wash the glasses with warm water and gentle soap to remove the bacteria once every two weeks. When you lay them down, make sure they’re facing upwards, and always keep them in a hard case when you aren’t using them.
____19____ You already know this one, but it bears repeating — stop staring at your computer screen or TV all the time. You need to take short breaks every half an hour, just a minute of looking away, or closing your eyes.
Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses can make you look pretty cool. ____20____ Find sunglasses that are stylish and comfortable and keep them close by at all time during summer.
A. And that’s a mistake.
B. Don’t overuse your eyes.
C They are essential for eye health.
D. Have your eyes checked regularly.
E. Wearing fancy sunglasses is thought to be a good choice.
F. They can also protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.

【答案】范文
Embracing the Magic of Print Media
As the digital revolution sweeps through our lives, the appeal of screens and the convenience of online content have quietly caused print media to lose its charm. Peeking into our library, we’ll see newspapers gathering dust, like long-forgotten friends.
However, print media offers a unique reading experience. It encourages a slower and more reflective reading process, allowing readers to digest information more thoroughly. Besides, it endows readers with the feel of the pages, the ink smell, and the freedom to flip through pages at our own pace, which offers us an escape into another world and a deeper dive into knowledge.
So, let’s bring back the joy of turning pages! Together, we can foster a culture of curiosity and lifelong learning that surpasses digital screens.

Then, finding I had no change, I said to him, “I will buy a box tomorrow.” “Oh, please buy them tonight.” the boy pleaded again, “ I will run and get you the change, for I am very hungry.” So I gave him the shilling, and he started away. I waited for him, but no boy came. I thought I had lost my shilling. still, there was something in the boy’s face I trusted, and I did not like to think bad of him.
Late in the evening I was told that a little boy wanted to see me. I found when he was brought in, it was a smaller brother of the boy who took my shilling. He stood for a moment, diving into his rags as if he were seeking something, and then said, “Are you the gentleman who bought the matches from Sandy.” “Yes.” “Well, then, here are four pence out of your shilling. Sandy cannot come. He’s very sick. A cart ran over him and knocked him down. He lost his cap and matches and seven pence of your money. Both his legs were broken, and the doctor says he’ll die. I fed the little fellow, and then went with him to see Sandy. Poor Sandy was lying on a bundle of shavings. The moment I went into the poor house, he recognized me. Weak as he was, he still struggled to sit up. Seeing this, I rushed to him and patted him on the shoulder. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes. With difficulty he murmured, “ I’m sure I’m dying, and who will take care of my little brother ” Sad tears streamed down the cheeks.
Then I took him by the hand, and said, “ I would always take care of your little brother.” On hearing of my words, he was so surprised that he froze with his mouth wide open. He tried to look up to me as if to thank me. Suddenly, the light went out of his blue eyes. How poor the little Sandy was! He was dead. Such is Sandy, a little boy who kept his word and set a good example for me. I will never forget his promise and love his little brother to the end.

He had a blunt (钝) pocket knife with him, which wasn’t sharp enough to cut through the bone.

8. Why did IPCC release its first assessment of climate science
A. To appeal to people to reduce carbon levels.
B. To state the earth’s temperature hits a record high.

“The new study is decoding of speech recognition not production,” King agrees, “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”
A Disappointing. B. Surprising. C. Promising. D. Exciting.
15. What is the best title for the text
A A New Study on Artificial Intelligence B. The Application of MEG Technology
C. A New Way to Decode Speech D. A Solution to Communication Problems

One very cold day, not long ago, in Edinburgh, I was standing at the door of a hotel. A little boy with a thin blue face, his feet bare and red with the cold, and with nothing to cover him but a bundle of rags, came to them and said, “Please, sir, buy some matches.” “No, I don’t want any.” answered one of the gentlemen. “But they are only a penny a box.” pleaded the poor little fellow. “Yes, but, you see, I don’t want a box.” I said again. “Then I will give you two boxes for a penny.” the boy said.
At last, I decided to buy a box to get rid of him.
I found, when he was brought in, it was a smaller brother of the boy who took my shilling. My brother and I lived almost alone, for our father and mother were dead”
