教学过程 Step 1: Leading in Show Colombia’s and Switzerland’s national flags to students and ask them: Which country’s flags are they Step 2: Preparation Introduce a little about Colombia and Switzerland to students: Colombia is a country in South America. It’s famous for its coffee, bananas and flowers. Colombia is also a major producer for coal, oil and emeralds. Switzerland is a country in central Europe. It is one of the most economically developed and richest countries in the world. Surrounded by forest, mountains and lakes, Switzerland is rich in tourism resources. Also, Switzerland is famous for its army knives, watches and cheese. Step 3: Reading 1. Before reading, show the first sentence of each paragraph to students and ask them to think of what this passage will mainly talk about. 2. Ask for two volunteers to read each paragraph. Get the volunteers to read “their” opinions out to the class. 3. While they are reading, ask the rest of the students to close their textbooks. Remind the readers that they should speak clearly and loudly so that their classmates can hear what they are saying. 4. Ask studentss to find out in which country it is OK to be 15 minutes late for dinner. (Answer: Colombia) Step 4: Pair work 1. In pairs, get students to pick one column each and fill in the answers. Then get them to share their answers with each other. 2. Get students to write out the conversation in pairs, after which they can practice it with each other. Remind students of what was pointed out in activity 2d—that tone and emotion need to change accordingly, depending on what is being conveyed. The instructions are clear in that Marc is angry, so this emotion needs to come through in the vocabulary used and the emotion in which is delivered. 3. Tell students that Teresa plans to visit China in summer. Ask each pair to give Teresa some information about customs in China. (i.e. greeting, being on time, visiting a friend’s house, making plans with friends, dressing for a party.) Step 5: Language points 1. relaxed 形容词relaxed意为“放松的,自在的”,be relaxed about意为“对……感到放松” You just need to be relaxed about this examination. 你只要放松地面对考试就可以了。 2. value value 作动词时,意为“珍视,重视”。 I’ve always valued my teachers’ advice. 我一直很重视老师们所给的建议。 3. drop by drop by意为“顺便拜访”。 Drop by my home this evening. 今晚到我家来谈谈。 4. after all after all意为“毕竟”。 So you see, I was right after all. 你看,毕竟还是我对吧。 You decided to come after all. 你毕竟还是决定来了。 5. make an effort make an effort 意为“做出努力”。 You should make an effort to improve your reading ability. 你应该努力提高你的阅读能力. 6. Also, we never visit a friend’s house without calling first. never和without都表示否定,合在一起表达肯定意义,意为“一定会”。 You will hardly ever be able to speak good English without practicing. 你不练习几乎是不可能把英语学好的。 Step 6: Grammar points It’s+adj. (+ for / of sb. ) +to do sth. be supposed to do sth. / be expected to do sth. 1. be supposed to do sth. 意为“(按规定、习惯、安排等)应该做某事,可用来表示劝告、建议、义务、责任等,相当于should的用法。 否定形式为be not supposed to do sth.表示不该或禁止做的情。 If you want to eat ice-cream, you are supposed to ask you mum. 如果你想吃冰淇淋,应该先问问你妈妈。 2. be expected to do sth. 表达“被期许(预期)会做某事,希望做某事,表示一种可能性。 She was expected to arrive before dinner. 希望她晚餐前到达。 3. It be + adj. +to do sth. 意为“做某事是……的”。It be important to do sth. ….做某事很重要。 It is important to learn English well. 学好英语很重要。 Step 7: Practice 1. Ask students to complete the sentences in 4a with the phrases in the box. (Answers: 1. is important to 2. are expected to / are supposed to 3. is important to 4. are supposed to / are expected to 5. are supposed to / are expected to) 2. Ask students to fill in the blanks in 4b with the correct forms of the words in brackets. (Answers: is not expected to know, to learn, to understand, are supposed to do, not supposed to do) 3. In groups of three, ask students to come up with two pieces of advice for each of the items in the box. Give students up to 10 minutes to discuss, then ask them to switch groups. Tell students to ensure that none of their original group members are in their new group. Get them to exchange their answers with their new group members and compare how many pieces of advice overlap and how many differ. Step 8: Group work Make a list of advice for someone coming to your country as an exchange student for the first time.
