Dear readers,
“Persist.”—Viet Thanh Nguyen
“Success is no accident.”—Chris Bohjalian
“Keep writing and it’ll get easier.”——Lisa Jewell
“Be patient with yourself.”—Min Jin Lee
These are words of advice taken from our interview s with award-winning and bestselling authors. Notice, though, not a single mention of their status, prizes, or advances—in other words, their success. And while status, literary awards, and money can be indicators of a successful writer, one must actually sit down and write for any of those things to happen. That’s what all of these pieces of advice have in common: putting words on the page.
In this issue, you’ll find articles to help you succeed, no matter your goals. If it’s to figure out whether that mess of a novel you’ve got sitting in a drawer can be rescued or if you need to move on, Andromeda Romano’s article will offer questions to ask yourself. Michael La Ronn’s essay will give you an example of how an unexpected opportunity might be just the push you need. Or, if you’ve had trouble finding an agent, Ryan Van Cleave’s collection of tips and advice from 22 literary agents on every aspect of the business might change your luck. Matty Dalrymple shares ways to reach more readers and build a community with them.
Wish you success and happy new year!
21. The advice mentioned at the beginning highlights the importance of ________.
A. a big dream B. constant practice
C. earning money D. achieving success
22. Whose article may help those who are unsure whether to save an unsuccessful novel
A. Matty Dalrympl. B. Michael La Ronn.
C. Ryan Van Cleave. D. Andromed a Romano.
23. Who might be the target readers of this issue
A. Writers. B. Businessmen.
C. Booksellers. D. Literary agents.

My weight gain began while I was in veterinary(兽医的)school at Purdue University ten years ago, and it continued to increase quickly once I got married and had three children, all while running my own photography business. Needless to say, my busy schedule and caring for others took away from caring for myself. I knew I needed to work out and eat better; I was just too scared to ask for help on where to begin.
My turning point took place on January 20, 2021. It was the day before my husband and I celebrated our ninth anniversary(周年纪念日)that I decided to better myself. I was 32 years old and over 260 pounds. I thought to myself, “My kids are so little, and the route I am on isn’t going to allow me to be here long enough to watch them grow in life.” It just destroyed my happiness.
I began running at STRIDE in January 2022. My first class there was just power walking. After the class was done, I thought to myself, “Man, I think I could push myself a little harder next time.” And I did.
With love and encouragement from all the members surrounding me and the guidance and support from the coaches, I have been running ever since and loving it. I have never been a runner. Now I feel like my day doesn’t start without running, and that makes me so proud to say. I have come so far since joining STRIDE, but not just physically. Running has helped my mind and soul in more ways than one, and I’m so grateful for that. Running has given me a purpose again --a purpose to be a better mom, a purpose to be a better wife, a purpose to do better with my career, and a purpose to just better myself, which I so enjoy again.
If you’re in the same situation I was in, don’t hesitate to take action. I’ve made it and you can, too.
24. What does the author think played an important role in her weight gain
A. Having nobody to ask for help.
B. Being unaware of her unhealthy body.
C. A very busy life after getting married.
D. Considerable pressure from her veterinary school.
25. Why did the author decide to lose weight
A. She feared she’d die early.
B. She was warned by her doctor.
C. She intended to enjoy her anniversary.
D. She wanted to set a good example for her children.
26. In what way has the author changed
A. She has changed her dietary habits.
B. She is very hopeful about her life.
C. She gets along well with her family.
D. She has chosen her health over her career.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To recommend a running club.
B. To show the value of a balanced life.
C. To tell people how to lose weight quickly.
D. To encourage people with a weight problem.
C
Well over half of the average diet in the UK and US now consists of ultra-processed food(UPF)-or, as one scientist prefers to put it, industrially produced edible(可食用的)substances. Though defining it technically is complex, the simple explanation is that it contains items you wouldn’t normally find in a kitchen.
Sometimes UPF looks like junk food -obviously artificial and high in salt, fat and sugar. But it often comes in reliable forms such as soup, muesli or yogurt. Unfortunately, almost every food that comes with a health claim on the packet is a UPF. And a vast body of data has emerged in support of the theory that UPF damages the human body and increases rates of cancer, mental illness, etc.
Produced by a handful of multinational companies, UPF is created to be cheap to produce and transport, with industrially derived(衍生的)substances replacing costlier ingredients and ensuring long shelf lives. It is also designed to make us buy more -essential in a system where businesses must keep growing to satisfy their shareholders each quarter. Global consumption is rising fast, especially in middle-income countries.
The impact is firstly on individual bodies, but through them on health services. This is a social problem that cannot be solved by telling consumers to check product labels. UPF consumption is not propelled by laziness or greed, but poverty, intensive marketing and foods designed to make us keep eating.
Taking on big food is harder than tackling big tobacco has been. It requires addressing a broad range of products that many people cannot simply cut out. But it is possible and necessary. Addressing poverty is central: when people can afford to eat more healthily, they generally do.
The government should ensure that people learn not only about the risks of UPF, but also about how to eat well. Measures should be taken to ensure that the food consumption is driven by nutritional needs and appetites-not by financialised growth.
28. What can we know about UPF
A. It can’t be found in a kitchen.
B. It looks like junk food but is healthy.
C. It is most popular in rich countries.
D. It may harm physical or mental health.
29. What does the underlined word “propelled” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Forbidden. B. Changed.
C. Promoted. D. Assessed.
30. What is a possible way to deal with the UPF problem
A. To limit the production of UPF.
B. To handle the tobacco problem first.
C. To banned people from consuming UPF.
D. To raise consumers’ awareness of healthy diet.
31. What’s the best tile of the text
A. UPF: blame business, not consumers
C. UPF: time to go on or to stop
B. UPF: food of convenience
D. UPF: a sensitive issue
D
Do you remember being asked what you wanted to be when you grew up No doubt the more imaginative your answer, the more approval you would get. But once we reach adolescence(青春期), there’s far less tolerance for answers like, “I’m going to be a marine biologist, circus clown and journalist!” Now the question translates as You are allowed one identity in this life, so which is it
At university you need to choose a subject to major in, which leads to one specific degree, intended for one type of job. The message that you need to specialise is reinforced(强化)in many contexts. Career guidance books and counsellors give you tests to help you identify your dream job.
But what happens if you’re curious about several subjects, and there are many things you’d like to study If you’re unable or unwilling to settle on a single career path, you might worry that you don’t have one true calling like everybody else and that, therefore, your life lacks purpose. As the saying goes, you’re a “jack of all trades, master of none”.
In reality, the ambitious young people of today are more interested in moving around and doing different things. In the modern workplace, people are working flexibly and the individual is in control of their professional life and in a position to make decision s about how, when and where they work. Rather than finding something and doing it forever, the new challenge is to find a way of working that works for you.
This new flexible workplace is one where generalists feel at ease. People who have a range of interests are suited to the modern workplace in two essential ways. Firstly, they are used to combining two or more fields and it is at the intersection(十字路口)between seemingly unrelated ideas that innovation often happens. Secondly, people who change roles frequently are less afraid of trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zones. They’re fast learners.
32. What does the author say about university students
A. They tend to lose their imagination.
B. They feel pressured to choose a speciality.
C. They could benefit from career counselling.
D. They find it impossible to make decisions independently.
33. What does the author suggest in the third paragraph
A. People refuse to choose a career on purpose.
B. Everybody should find a passion and stick to it.
C. You’ll never succeed unless you find your dream job.
D. Some people may be unsure what career they really like.
34. What are people like in the modern workplace
A. They rarely decide what they want to do.
B. They prefer to stay in the same profession.
C. They are constantly challenged to change jobs.
D. They are taking control of how they work.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The importance of continuous learning.
B. Advantages of generalists in the future workplace.
C. Ways the modern workplace makes use of flexible workers.
D. The relationship between personal interests and career choices

There is much conversation about boundaries these days, but what exactly are boundaries Simply put, boundaries are limits we personally set in order to protect our physical, emotional, and mental health, and they can be set with ourselves, with others, or with both. 36 -physical boundaries, emotional boundaries, and time or effort boundaries.
37 . They help us to protect ourselves from harm -- keep us safe. They also help us to maintain our sense of self and feeling of control over our lives. 38 . The most common reason being that your boundary may mean someone else’s disappointment. Here are some tips when you are setting boundaries.
Initially, be clear and direct. The more clear and direct you are, the more others will be able to respect the boundaries you set. “I’m heading home today at 5 pm” will be understood more clearly than “I need to head home sometime around 5 or 5: 30 pm.” 39 . We can’t expect people to respect our boundaries if we don’t respect theirs. Further more, be willing for others not to like the boundaries you set. At first, this can feel difficult. But ultimately other people will respect you more for having clear boundaries and know what to expect from the relationship, which will become healthier and stronger. 40
Once you set boundaries, it’s important to maintain them. At the beginning, it may feel challenging to set and maintain them, but eventually, they can become second nature and we find ourselves in relationships built on mutual respect and care-the kind of relationships we all want to be in.
A. Or it will need to end
B. Boundaries have cons and pros
C. Then be respectful of others’ boundaries
D. Naturally, they may be met with resistance
E. There are many different types of boundaries
F. Boundaries are important part of a healthy life
G. However, people often have a difficult time setting them

Isla and I were studying in the same school. We had been friends since we were six years old. I took Isla as a smart, funny friend, but not all students at our school did, especially the girl students. Girls in our school wore fashionable branded clothes, but Isla sewed hers and her curly hair and thick glasses made her look like a fish, which made her stand out like a sore thumb(招眼).
For me, sometimes I felt embarrassed to be around Isla, particularly when students said rude words about her hair, clothes, glasses —even about the fact that she got really good grades. Isla always seemed to be able to ignore what other students thought, but I couldn’t. I began to distance myself from her. Our school had a tradition —there was a talent show every spring. Students would sing, dance, play musical instruments, and do whatever they could to show their talents. Being our graduation season in this senior school, this year’s talent show would be obviously different. It would be a huge night.
Ava, who was an outgoing girl, invited me to be on her dance team. “We win the talent show every year, and we expect a satisfactory graduation this year,” Ava said to me excitedly. “We need a new dancer. But only you, not her!” Ava pointed to someone behind me.
I didn’t need to turn around to see who she meant. “Oh, I see,” I said quietly. Ava had hardly headed out when someone tapped on my shoulder. It was Isla. When I saw her confused face, it was like waking up from a dream. Isla asked me eagerly, “Emily, are you going to take part in the talent show ” I hesitated without response. “That’s great, Emily!” Isla told me without waiting for my answer that she was also going to participate this year. I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I started to worry about her when I imagined that she was in front of a huge crowd, and that everybody would laugh at her.
Time passed quickly, and I had barely seen Isla since then. For me,I had to practice hard every day with Ava and the team to keep up since the other dancers had already known the steps.

This online concert is absolutely fantastic. The performers from both schools did their best to entertain the audience with song after song. Their performances are undoubtedly of high quality, which makes the concert almost no different from a live one. I enjoyed every second of the concert and was particularly attracted when the boys and girls from Britain started to sing the traditional Chinese song “Liang Zhu”. They performed the song in a way that touched my heart and gave me a feeling of connection. I hope there will be more opportunities in the future for us Chinese students and our international friends to learn about and from each other.

Finally, it was my turn to perform, and I felt extremely nervous. I didn’t want to be regarded as different from the others. Isla walked to me and hugged me tightly. “Come on, Emily!” Isla encouraged me. “I believe you will do great because you are a wonderful dancer. Don’t care too much about what others think. Just trust yourself." Soon, I took my place on the stage. I remembered every step and every move. When the music was over, the crowd burst into cheers. At that moment, I felt like a dancing queen!
I stepped off the stage and expressed my thanks to Isla, who was ready to sing. I was a little worried at the beginning because the crowd became restless. Luckily, Isla ignored it. I stood up, shouting, “Isla, you are the best!” Her homemade dress was shining in the light, but her eyes were clouded with tears. When Isla’s singing died down, all the students were still lost in her unique voice. Some even began singing like her, and then more. Their singing resounded around the hall. I rushed to the stage after her performance, hugging her cheerfully. That was enough! We could never be distanced.

W: Hi, Steve. Did you check the weather for this week
M: Hi, Molly. Yes, I did. It will be fine tomorrow. But it looks like there will be heavy rain and strong wind this weekend.
Text 2
M: Smile for the camera! This is an exciting day. It’s your sixteenth birthday!

M: I’m calling about plane tickets to London. I understand you are offering a special discount right now.
W: That’s correct. Right now, we are offering business class tickets at 20% off our regular rates. The condition is that you must spend at least five days in London, and you must leave on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
M: I see. That’s not really going to be convenient for me. I can’t leave until Friday afternoon at the earliest. And I have to fly back right after a meeting there on Monday morning.
W: That is bad news for two reasons. First, the special discount is not in effect at that time, and there are no seats available on our Friday flight.
M: That’s a real pity. But I have to fly to London, anyway. I’ll just go check online.

W: Very cold! I had never been to Iceland before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. There aren’t a lot of people in the country. We were filming in this small fishing village, so it wasn’t uncommon to go days without seeing anyone. The villagers mainly kept to themselves.
M: I think everyone in the audience is dying to know if you hung out with Johnny Depp.
W: Yes, of course. He was staying at the house, too.
M: Well, what is he like
W: He’s very nice. He also told some really great jokes. He spent a lot of time being wrapped up in blankets when we were on set. It snowed quite a bit for the first few days.
Text 10
M: Good morning. I’m Bill Smith from Riverside Travel Agency. I am so happy to be with you on Leeds City Radio. Today, I’m going to talk about the biggest island, the so-called “last white spot” on Earth: Greenland. Our agency runs two tours per season to Greenland. Each tour lasts eight days, and we offer an extraordinary experience in this magical land. To begin with, the beautiful Arctic scenery is almost endless, and with a total population of only 55,000, you are truly on your own as soon as you leave one of the small towns and settlements. Humans are the exception in this place. The mountains, valleys, rivers, and huge ice caps are practically untouched. However, what attracts tourists most must be the whale watching. Greenland’s whale watching can be enjoyed from the streets or even from your hotel room. If you sail along the coast on a passenger ship, the captain will often announce when whales are close.
