Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,” Maya Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors. and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype(原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the programming, “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through.” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24. What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs
A. She gained a lot of money in the award. B. She showed a curious nature as a schooler.
C. She set a big stage for young people her age. D. She was junior to other winners in performance.
25. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system
A. Her desire to win the science award. B. Her experience of a destructive fire.
C. Her interest in computer programming. D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
26. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
27. Which of the following can best describe Shanya
A. Reliable. B. Cooperative. C. Innovative. D. Generous.
【答案】24. B 25. B 26. B 27. C

The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it’s right for you.
To do so, I divided the book into two parts. In part one, I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people’s digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.
Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy: the digital declutter. This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days. At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value.
In the final chapter of part one, I’ll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so, I’ll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You’ll hear these participants’ stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid.
The second part of this book takes a closer look at some ideas that will help you cultivate (培养) a sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these chapters, I examine issues such as the importance of solitude (独处) and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spent on mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a collection of practices, which are designed to help you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that works for your particular circumstances.
28. What is the book aimed at
A. Teaching critical thinking skills. B. Advocating a simple digital lifestyle.
C. Solving philosophical problems. D. Promoting the use of a digital device.
29. What does the underlined word “declutter” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Clear-up. B. Add-on. C. Check-in. D. Take-over.
30. What is presented in the final chapter of part one
A. Theoretical models. B. Statistical methods.
C. Practical examples. D. Historical analyses.
31. What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two
A. Use them as needed. B. Recommend them to friends.
C. Evaluate their effects. D. Identify the ideas behind them.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. A

“Please, no flash photography.”
Polite requests like this can be found in museums all over the world, but they generally fail to persuade people out of taking photos of whatever they feel like. The same goes for concerts, movie theaters and other places where people routinely ignore filming restrictions. A new patent from Apple may help discourage that rebellious behavior-on phones at least.
The patent, awarded to Apple today, outlines a system which would allow venues to use an infrared emitter (红外线发射器) to remotely disable the camera function on smartphones. According to the patent, infrared rays could be picked up by the camera, and interpreted by the smartphone as a command to block the user from taking any photos or videos of whatever they’re seeing.
Many musicians and performers have banned cellphones from their shows, either because they want their audiences to actually pay attention to them, or because they don’t want the free footage (片段镜头) going viral around the web. Despite this, unauthorized (未授权的) images still manage to make their way into the public eye. The last concert of American singer Prince before he passed away was supposed to be cellphone-free —it apparently wasn’t. If Apple’s patent is introduced into iPhone software, and venues put infrared emitters around their stage, leaks like this could potentially stop happening.
But the patent also raises questions about the sort of power that this technology would be handing over to people with more immoral intentions.
Right now, there’s no guarantee that Apple intends to put this technology into any of its software —Apple doesn’t act on many of the thousands of patents it files each year —and the company wasn’t immediately available to comment on its plans for the patent.
Given the company’s rigid support of personal privacy when it comes to police requests to break into users’ devices, it’s possible that Apple just patented the technology so that no one else will use it. But who knows, if it does intend to introduce this feature to future operating systems, sales of alternative shooting devices like camcorders, or even GoPros, could get a much-needed boost, as people try to avoid having to use the prohibitive software.
32. How can Apple’s patented system prevent smartphone users from taking photos or videos at specific venues
A. By giving out a sound wave that disables smartphone cameras.
B. By picking up infrared rays emitted by the cameras when they are filming.
C. By using infrared rays that can remotely block camera usage on smartphones.
D. By automatically deleting photos or videos if they are taken without permission.
33. Which of the following is one of the reasons why cellphones are banned from many shows
A. To make the performers more focused on the show.
B. To avoid the unauthorized footage being freely shared and spread online.
C. To prevent the performers’ images from coming to widespread public attention.
D. To protect the audience from people with immoral intentions.
34. What does the underlined word in the fourth paragraph mean
A. Unintended damage. B. Unauthorized release.
C. Unexpected death. D. Undesired freedom.
35. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. Apple has planned to apply this patent to future operating systems.
B. All the patents Apple files each year are meant to be put into its software.
C. Apple may agree to put this technology into its software due to police requests.
D. People may turn to other shooting devices if Apple introduces the prohibitive software.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。讲述了苹果公司的一项新专利或许能在手机上限制违规摄屏行为。
【32题详解】

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Many musicians and performers have banned cellphones from their shows, either because they want their audiences to actually pay attention to them, or because they don’t want the free footage(片段镜头) going viral around the web.(许多音乐家和表演者都禁止在他们的演出中使用手机,要么是因为他们想让观众真正关注他们,要么是因为他们不想让免费的视频在网上疯传)”可知,为了避免未经授权的视频在网上自由分享和传播是许多节目禁止使用手机的原因之一。故选B项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据根据前文“Despite this, unauthorized (未授权的) images still manage to make their way into the public eye. The last concert of American singer Prince before he passed away was supposed to be cellphone-free —it apparently wasn’t.(尽管如此,未经授权的图像仍然设法进入公众的视线。美国歌手普林斯(Prince)去世前的最后一场演唱会本该是不带手机的——但显然不是)”可知,句中“leaks like this”是指上文中的演唱会现场镜头泄露事件,推知leaks是“未经授权发布”之意,和B项意思相近。故选B项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Given the company’s rigid support of personal privacy when it comes to police requests to break into users’ devices, it’s possible that Apple just patented the technology so that no one else will use it. But who knows, if it does intend to introduce this feature to future operating systems, sales of alternative shooting devices like camcorders, or even GoPros, could get a much-needed boost, as people try to avoid having to use the prohibitive software.(考虑到苹果公司在警方要求闯入用户设备时对个人隐私的严格支持,苹果公司可能只是申请了这项技术的专利,这样就没有其他人会使用它。但谁知道呢,如果它真的打算在未来的操作系统中引入这一功能,那么像摄像机甚至gopro这样的替代拍摄设备的销售可能会得到急需的提振,因为人们会试图避免使用这一令人望而却步的软件)”可推知,如果苹果推出这款令人望而却步的软件,人们可能会转向其他拍摄设备。故选D项。
第二节 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

D
C To prevent the performers’ images from coming to widespread public attention.
