It was a common schedule for Andrew Chi-Chih Yao. First he gave a lesson in the morning to the Pilot Computer Science class. With two foreign scholars, he conducted a seminar at 2:00 that afternoon for graduate students. Afterward, Professor Yao exchanged ideas with the visiting Minister of Education and the Minister of Technology, on the development of world-class disciplines in China’s universities. By late that afternoon, Professor Yao was ready to turn to his own research. It was just a very common day for Tsinghua University’s Professor Yao.
Professor Yao, a world-renowned computer scientist, received the A. M. Turing Award in 2000 for his fundamental contributions to the theory of computation. He once worked at such universities as MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Princeton. He left Princeton in 2004 to become a Tsinghua University Professor of Computer Science.

Indian scientists plan to add substances to clouds above the capital New Delhi in an effort to produce rain to reduce pollution. The method is called cloud seeding. The process involves adding different chemicals to clouds to cause rain. When rain falls from the sky, water droplets can attach to pollution particles and bring them down to the ground.
New Delhi has been rated the city with the most air pollution in the world. Air quality decreases in the city ahead of winter each year. During this time, cold air can trap many pollutants, including gases from vehicles, industry and agricultural burning.
Scientists expect some clouds over the city around November 20. They hope the clouds will result in heavy rainfall. The project, estimated to cost $120,000 for 100 square kilometers, would involve spraying into clouds a mix of salts that include silver iodine.
“The local government in New Delhi, a city of 20 million people, has already closed all schools and other educational institutions, asked people to work from home, restricted the movement of trucks and other vehicles and ceased all building activities”, said Gufran Beig, head of the Indian government’s air-quality measuring agency SAFAR, adding that “The city needs heavy and widespread rain to wash away the pollutants, and light rain could worsen the situation.”
New Delhi’s pollution has been exacerbated by more than 3,500 fires in Punjab and Haryana, where farmers burned stubble (秸秆) ahead of sowing their winter wheat crop. The smoke has been trapped tightly in the cold winter air, leaving the hospitals filled with children and the elderly.
It is reported that officials in New Delhi now are seeking approval for the project from the Supreme Court. In 2021, a plan to seed clouds over the mountains of New Mexico to increase snowfall was pulled because of the blame that it could poison people and the environment. As a matter of fact, several countries have used this method to produce rain, improve air quality and water crops in times of extreme dryness, including Mexico, the United States, Indonesia and Malaysia.
28 What do you know about cloud seeding
A. A method to let rain fall down together with pollutants.
B. A method designed to generate rain or snow artificially.
C. A method created to absorb substances from clouds.
D. A method used to assess clouds’ quality and quantity.
29. What can we learn from Gufran Beig
A. Most schools have to break up their off line classes.
B. The roads are closed to trucks and other vehicles.
C. It is possible that a light rain will visit the city.
D. A huge pressure from an intense rain will work.
30. What does the underlined word “exacerbated” mean in Paragraph 5
A. Worsened. B. Considered. C. Controlled. D. Restored.
31. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. Cloud seeding has become popular in the world.
B. Cloud seeding is indeed a threat to living creatures.
C. Not all the nations and areas support cloud seeding.
D. It is the second time that India has seeded clouds.

Antarctica has not always been a land of ice and snow. Earth’s southernmost continent once was home to rivers and forests full of life. Researchers are using satellites to look deep under the ice in Antarctica, finding a large ancient landscape buried under the continent’s ice sheet. The landscape is located in East Antarctica’s Wilkes Land area bordering the Indian Ocean, covering an area about the size of Belgium. The researchers said the landscape is estimated to have been buried beneath the ice shelf for between 14 million to 34 million years, when Antarctica entered its deep freeze.
“The landscape is like a snapshot of the past,” said Stewart Jamieson, a professor of glaciology at Durham University in England and co-leader of the study published in the journal Nature Communications, “It is difficult to know what this lost world might have looked like before the ice came along, but it was certainly warmer back then. Ancient palm tree pollen has been discovered from Antarctica, not far from our study site.”
Some earlier studies have uncovered ancient landscapes beneath Antarctica’s ice including mountains. But the landscape discovered in the new study was the first of its kind. It is estimated that such an environment would likely have been populated by wildlife. But the area’s fossil record is too incomplete to know which animals may have lived there. The ice above the ancient landscape measures about 2.2 kilometers to 3 kilometers thick.
The researchers said one way to learn more would be to drill through the ice and take a piece of the earth below. This could uncover evidence showing ancient life, as was done with samples taken in Greenland dating back two million years ago.
Right before 34 million years ago, Antarctica’s landscape and wildlife was likely similar to today’s cold temperate rainforests. That includes places like Tasmania, New Zealand and South America’s Patagonia area. When the climate cooled even more, an ice sheet grew which covered the whole continent.
32. How long ago was the landscape not buried at the latest
A. 14 million years ago. B. 34 million years ago.
C. 20 million years ago. D. 48 million years ago.
33. Why does Jamieson mention the word “snapshot”
A. To show it is hard to explore this lost world.
B. To indicate there exist some vivid remains.
C. To present the influence of terrible weather.
D. To explain the landscape was too warm to live in.
34. Where does the newly-discovered landscape differ from others
A. The landscape contains many hills and mountains.
B. Animal skeletons have been uncovered in the landscape.
C. There seems to have existed a mass of wild animals.
D. The ice above the landscape is too thick to measure.
35. What is the proper title for the passage
A. Antarctica Once Witnessed Kinds of Wildlife.
B. Areas of Rainforests Found in Antarctica.
C. Many Landscapes under Antarctica Discovered.
D. Ancient Landscape Found Buried in Antarctic Ice.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was around six years old, we had a neighbor, David, who was restoring an old 40’s Ford in his garage, and I was a curious kid, so I would go across the street and visit him as often as I could.
He was the first person to introduce me to Go-Jo hand soap, which I thought had an unpleasant smell. He and his wife occasionally invited me to have supper with them, and it was there that I would learn about burgers with French dressing. Eventually, he moved away.
A few years ago, I ran into David again. He went to the same restaurant to have breakfast. David retired and still had that 1940 Ford and also a mid-forties truck which he would always drive, one or the other, to breakfast.
David and I enjoyed many conversations about life, cars, and car shows. I remember just a few years ago, he was sitting at a local pizza joint with his daughter, and I sat next to him to have a conversation. I asked, “Where’s your wife ” To which his face went blank, and his daughter told me her mom had passed away. At that moment, my heart ached because, after having lost my wife, I knew that pain all too well. From then on, I noticed when David came to breakfast, he had his wife’s dog with him. Yep, he had that dog with him always. Even at car shows, they had a close bond which I understood.
I looked forward to car show season. When I saw him at the shows, it always put an emotional tear in my eye watching him and that dog. I wanted to get a picture of him and his dog, but I was always in a hurry and kept saying I would get it at the next show. However, with COVID-19 and all the fear out, car shows were getting canceled, and David wasn’t at breakfast much anymore because he didn’t want to catch it.

【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In 2021,a plan to seed clouds over the mountains of New Mexico to increase snowfall was pulled because of the blame that it could poison people and the environment.”(2021年,一项在新墨西哥州山区的人工降雨以增加降雪的计划被取消,因为人们指责它可能会毒害人和环境。)可知,新墨西哥州取消了人工降雪计划,原因是这可能危害人体健康、污染环境。由此推断,并非所有的国家和地区都支持人工降水。故选C。

【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家在南极的冰雪之下发现了一处远古景观,认为数亿年前此处存在大批野生动物。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段的“The researchers said the landscape is estimated to have been buried beneath the ice shelf for between 14 million to 34 million years, when Antarctica entered its deep freeze.(研究人员表示,据估计,当南极洲进入深度冰冻期时,这片土地已经在冰层下埋藏了1400万至3400万年)”可知,该景观最晚于1400万年前被埋于地下。故选A。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中Stewart Jamieson所说的话“The landscape is like a snapshot of the past(这里的景观就像是过去的快照)”以及“It is difficult to know what this lost world might have looked like before the ice came along, but it was certainly warmer back then. Ancient palm tree pollen has been discovered from Antarctica, not far from our study site.(很难知道在冰出现之前,这个失落的世界会是什么样子,但当时肯定更温暖。在离我们研究地点不远的南极洲发现了古老的棕榈树花粉)”可知,研究地点的冰下景观就像是过去被拍下的快照一样被定格,当时气候温暖,而且科学家们在距离这处研究地点不远处发现了古老的棕榈树花粉;由此可推断,杰米森提到“快照”这个词是为了暗示冰下存在一些生动的遗迹。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“It is estimated that such an environment would likely have been populated by wildlife.(据估计,这样的环境很可能有野生动物居住)”可知,新发现的景观与其他景观不同的地方在于新发现的的环境中很可能存在野生动物。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段的“Researchers are using satellites to look deep under the ice in Antarctica, finding a large ancient landscape buried under the continent’s ice sheet. (研究人员正在使用卫星深入南极冰层下,发现了埋藏在该大陆冰盖下的大型古代景观)”以及全文可知,本文主要介绍了科学家借助卫星在南极的冰雪之下发现了一处远古景观。所以“埋藏在南极冰层中的远古景观”适合作本文的标题。故选D。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2:
David’s death has really reminded me to the meaning of life.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph1:
About a week ago, when going to pick up my breakfast, I asked my waitress Tanya “Have you seen David lately ” Tanya told me that about three weeks ago David passed away due to a sudden heart attack. On hearing her words, I stood there still for a few seconds without saying a word. I was too shocked to believe my ears. I could feel my energy drain from my body as I struggled not to have tears on my cheeks in public. I just wanted to get into my car to wrap my head around what I heard.
Paragraph 2:
David’s death has really reminded me to the meaning of life. You see, we never know which one comes first, the death or tomorrow. I will never have the opportunity to get that picture of him with his dog, nor will I get to tell him what he meant to me and what a great effect he had on my life and career.
