Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s best friends.
What happens after an earthquake We send in rescue dogs. Why Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号).This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Organization in Scotland says, “It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
4. Why will rats become man’s best friends in the world earthquake capitals
A. Because they can take the place of man's rescue jobs.
B. Because they can find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings.
C. Because they can serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings.
D. Because they can get into small spaces.
5. From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by _____.
A. the noise made by the rat B. the rat’s unusual behavior
C. the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back D. the smell given off by the person
6. Which of these statements is NOT the advantage that rats have
A. They are more lovely than other animals.
B. They are less expensive to train than dogs.
C. They don't need electricity.
D. They are small and can get into small places.
7. What can we infer from the passage
A. At present rats have taken the place of dogs in searching for people.
B. The “rat project” has been completed.
C. People are now happy to see a rat in a building.
D. Now people still use dogs and robots in performing rescues.
B 5. C 6. A 7. D
But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
根据第三段中the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号).This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals.
Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity(电)! But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat. 故选A.
Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
如for example, first, second…
如小题2根据第三段中the rat is trained to smell people.

If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double—check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten, my secretary had got the ticket for me and I thoughts he had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency (货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was awkward.
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suit and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
8. Where is the writer most probably from
A. Italy. B. The USA. C. The UK. D. Greece.
9. According to the passage, the driver was angry because the writer________.
A. gave him false money B. did not give him the local money
C. offered to pay by credit card D. had no enough change
10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.
B. You don’t have to take credit cards when travelling.
C. You should to check the departure time carefully.
D. You don’t need to know the weather of the place you’ll visit.
11. The writer mainly tells us________.
A. how to make life easier B. how to be well prepared for a trip
C. how to enjoy ourselves on trip D. how to plan our trip
C 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第三段的“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.(到我的旅馆的唯一办法是坐出租车,因为我没有美元,我提出用英镑付款)”可知,作者没有带美元,想用英镑付打车的费用,由此可知,作者可能来自英国。
根据第三段的“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was awkward.(去酒店的唯一途径是打车,因为我没有美元,所以我提出用英镑支付。“听着!我只要真正的钱!”司机愤怒地说。幸运的是,我能从酒店的一位职员那里借到几美元,但这很尴尬)”可知,司机生气是因为作者没有用美元支付,即没有用当地的钱。故选B。
【10题详解】

Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系).The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).
The announcement was made in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo. Details have been published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Prof Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who suggested the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87. “What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System,” he said. “It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.”
The image shows an intensely bright “ring of fire”, as Prof Falcke describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole. The bright halo is caused by very heated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined - which is why it can be seen at such distance from Earth. The edge of the dark circle at the center is the point at which the gas enters the black hole, which is an object that has such a large gravitational pull (万有引力) , not even light can escape.
“It is remarkable that the image we observe is so similar to that which we get from our theoretical calculations. So far, it looks like Einstein is correct once again.” said Dr Ziri Younsi, of University College London -who is part of the EHT cooperation.
Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis, said Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanhai Astronomical Observatory and a member of the EHT international team.
Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China’s contribution.
“In the fields of astronomy, radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project,” Falcke said.
12. What is the best title for the passage
A. First Image of a Black Hole Taken
B. How Einstein Discovered a Black Hole
C. How a Black Hole Is Formed
D. A Book about Black Holes
13. Why are six cities selected for the announcement
A. It was the first black hole ever discovered.
B. It took eight telescopes to work together.
C. It was a joint effort of many countries.
D. It’s the heaviest of black holes.
14. From the passage we know that in the experiment Chinese scientists______.
A. started the experiment B. led the experiment
C. provided the equipment D. played an important role
15. What docs Dr Ziri Younsi tell us about black holes in Paragraph 5
A. Black holes can swallow up everything in the Universe.
B. Scientists knew about black holes before they see them.
C. Einstein has been proved wrong many times.
D. Black holes might be some make-up stories.
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

Is exploring space a waste of time and money
Some people have expressed doubts about space exploration. They argue that we should find solutions to other more practical problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases, instead of exploring space.
As far as I’m concerned, despite the huge risk and tremendous cost, the desire to explore the universe never dies due to the fact that space exploration has already made a huge difference to our world. Firstly, space exploration can increase our knowledge and drive innovation in numerous fields, such as farming techniques, food production and the creation of new medicines, which may help to improve our life. Additionally, humans are currently restricted to a single planet and should something happen that changes the environment of the planet, the entire human race would be in danger of being wiping out. Thus, space exploration provides us with hope for the future.

“Why she let out my secret why she did that to me ” I vividly remembered that day when I was confused at the knowing looks which everyone gave me. That terrible experience was imprinted (铭刻) on my mind. I couldn’t forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust and friendship.
Five years back, Sally was a new addition in our class. I don’t know what but there was something sticky about her that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and dreamed of going to the same university one day. We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.
Nevertheless, I couldn’t expect such an enormous betrayal from her. I didn’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. I felt much regret to myself. She exaggerated (夸大) the matter, added her own spices to it and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed a knife in my back. After she revealed my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and gazing at me wherever I passed. I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up. It was the most embarrassing time I had gone through. Soon afterwards, I left school and shifted to another one, because I thought no one had the right to laugh at me. Sally called me many times but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I made efforts to remove the scar from my heart. I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind, because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences. Five years later, with the life going on, I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.

I immediately called Sally in order to explain the misunderstanding.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
But one day I met Anna in the market, my former classmate, who told me shocking news. Anna said that after I left school the gossip soon disappeared. Everyone in our class missed me. Because I left without saying goodbye, Sally was sad for a long time. And to my amazement, she told me that Sally was not the one who brought my secret to light. It was Mary who had a big mouth and always wanted to put her nose in other people’s matters. She happened to overhear my conversation with Sally. I was all at sea, feeling that the floor had slipped away beneath my feet. Anxious and regretful, I asked Anna for any contact with Sally.
I immediately called Sally in order to explain the misunderstanding. After getting through, I sincerely apologized to her. She said softly: “Never mind. We are good friends.” I was in tears, guilt and joy. At that moment, I wished it had not happened. I wished time could go back and I could overcome my mistake. From that I got a lesson in life that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value. Trust is the foundational principle that holds friendship. Trust is also the easiest thing in the world to lose. We need to be open and trust our friends.

C
A The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.
B. You don’t have to take credit cards when travelling.
C You should to check the departure time carefully.
D. You don’t need to know the weather of the place you’ll visit.
11. The writer mainly tells us________.
A. how to make life easier B. how to be well prepared for a trip
C. how to enjoy ourselves on trip D. how to plan our trip
D
Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences, together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China’s contribution.
“In the fields of astronomy radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project,” Falcke said.
