I feel worried, too. What will my new life be like Will people there be friendly Will I be able to learn enough French to communicate Five hours ago, I was at the airport at Beijing. My family and friends were with me. Everyone was saying “Goodbye! Good luck!” I looked at my parents’ faces. I saw their big smiles. I knew that they were proud of me. But I also saw the tears in their eyes. I knew that they were going to miss me. My family are learning to live without me, and now I must learn to live without them. I know that my parents are worried about my safety, but I also want to seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realize my dream. So here I am on this plane. I must be brave because I will have a lot to do.

The following suggestions might be helpful. For one thing, ensure you make sufficient preparations in advance. The more you practice, the better your performance will be. For another, there are some approaches to relieving nervousness, such as breathing deeply and focusing on positive thoughts.
I believe you’ll make it next time.
Yours,

A schoolgirl has created a solar-powered backpack that filters (过滤) out air pollution after being inspired by her asthmatic (哮喘的) mother.
Eleanor Woods, 12, from High Burton, Huddersfield, a town in West Yorkshire, northern England, entered the “Backpack to the Future” competition after her mother put the application form in her room. She went on to win the award for her.
The “Backpack to the Future” competition was launched to change perception (认知), encourage more diversity within engineering and to show children how they could combine an interest in fashion with a career in science, technology, engineering or maths.
Powered by green energy from solar power and a dynamo- a machine that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy - the backpack filters polluted air before fanning out cleaner air nearby.
“I have an air filter at home because my mum has mild asthma. My Breathe Better Backpack is all about keeping my friends, family and classmates safe using an air filter. It looks cool and will help get kids outside and fight off colds,” Eleanor said.
The pandemic spurred on (刺激了) Eleanor’s awareness of how pollution affects a person’s health and the spread of diseases. Spending a lot of time with her asthmatic mum over several lockdowns gave the 12-year-old food for thought.
The schoolgirl added: “My generation is really aware of pollution, and we have lessons on it at school along with diseases spreading, and this is another reason I designed this, because it is getting much worse.”
The young designer said she is becoming increasingly aware of the pollution that surrounds her, as she lives on a main road. Eleanor said: “I walk to school, next to the road, and can taste the petrol when buses come through.”
Speaking after winning the competition, Eleanor said the impact of her backpack will be far-reaching. “If just a few people start using it, it could be really good for the planet,” she said.

Digging out potato tubers (茎块) is one of the greatest rewards gardens have to offer. Children in particular are surprised at seeing these tubers that almost magically become chips, mash (泥) or baked potatoes.
Happily, potatoes are very easy to grow. Seed tubers are placed in good garden soil, ideally with some compost (堆肥) for every square meter, in a sunny spot, about 10cm deep at 30cm intervals in rows 60-70cm apart.
Seed tubers are offered as earliest and second earliest and maincrop. The second earliest and maincrops can be stored for winter use but earliest are usually consumed in summer.
Seasoned potato growers buy early seed potatoes in February and place them in a cool, reasonably light place and let them sprout (发芽). It takes six weeks for small sprouts to form.
Early potatoes are typically planted from middle March in the South, but are likely to emerge before the first season finishes in May. The shoots are frost-sensitive requiring protection on cod nights with either earth or newspapers.
Second early and maincrop potatoes are planted in middle April—the frost risk will be low, but not absent, by the time they emerge. As the stems (茎) grow, soil should be drawn around them until the leaves meet in the row in early summer. At this stage, the potato field is a series of ridges (脊,垄). The tubers form in the ridge, protected from light that turns them green. Covering with black plastic or a thick layer of compost is also accessible instead of ridging, but plastic is not sustainable and slugs (鼻涕虫) can multiply in compost.
Once the flowers are fully open, it is time to dig plants when the tubers are the size of a hen’s egg. They grow rapidly but gradually lose their juicy new potato flavour, so harvest freely.
28. What’s the writing purpose of paragraph 1
A. To describe a magic process. B. To recall a childhood memory.
C. To raise a potato-related topic. D. To introduce a gardening award.
29. What can we learn about seed tubers
A. The closer the intervals are, the faster they will grow.
B. The warmer the weather is, the better they will grow.
C. The earlier they are planted, the healthier they will grow.
D. The deeper they are planted, the stronger they will grow.
30. What helps potatoes grow in the long term
A. Frost. B. Plastic. C. Ridges. D. Slugs.
31. What’s the text mainly about
A. How to cook potatoes. B. How to grow potatoes.
C. How to harvest potatoes. D. How to preserve potatoes.

Have you ever imagined getting to the airport in a flying taxi, soaring over those who are stuck in traffic below What would you feel if electric air taxis could one day take you from downtown to the suburbs, high above expressway traffic, in a tiny amount of the time it takes to drive
It’s not a dream in the distant future. It’s the vision of electric aircraft developer Eve, which is leading a group of aviation companies and local governments conducting simulations (模拟) in Chicago. Though the aircraft are likely years away from receiving official approval to fly, it’s a vision shared by other major companies, like Chicago-based United Airlines, which recently struck a conditional agreement to purchase at least 200 of Eve’s flying taxis.
The concept of bypassing (绕开) traffic by air isn’t new. But Eve co-CEO And re Stein said the air taxis are nothing like conventional electric helicopters or flying cars. They are designed to use eight motors distributed around the aircraft to take off vertically, then electric pushers and wings to glide forward.
Stein hopes the air taxis to help passengers reach meetings across town or providing away to get home quickly in time for a child’s birthday. Compared to an everyday option like public transport, they can help save time when necessary. Besides, the new technology is expected to make air taxis more affordable than helicopters and the ticket price could be around $ 100 to travel 20 miles. Stein also boasts what he describes as improved efficiency and sustainability. “It’s much simpler, much lower maintenance than a helicopter, much quieter,” he said.
For now, Eve hopes their work will help provide a better understanding of how the air taxis could fit into current air traffic patterns and how they can connect with users journey via ground transport to the heliport. “It’s really about bringing another option for urban air mobility,” Stein said.
32. Why does the author raise two questions in paragraph 1
A. To express his doubts. B. To arrange air transport.
C. To introduce Eve’s vision. D. To present current situation.
33. What is the company Eve doing in Chicago
A. Cooperating with taxi companies. B. Working at developing flying taxis.
C. Carrying out simulations in the lab. D. Negotiating with local governments.
34. What is Stein’s attitude to electric air taxis
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. In different. D. Conservative.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The concept of urban air mobility. B. The benefits of air traffic patterns.
C. The prospect of flying taxi service. D. The evolution of ground transport.

Max loved action comics and movies. He worked in the car park of a big supermarket. It didn’t seem to be a good job, but Max didn’t have any qualifications. This was the best job he could find. Max collected the shopping carts(购物车)that shoppers left in the car park. He took the shopping carts back to the entrance of the supermarket. It was sometimes hard work but it was not difficult. So Max had a lot of spare time to dream. He dreamed of being a hero, like Superman or Batman. Of course, his dreams were crazy but as Max told himself, dreams were free of charge.
Today it was very wet and windy. Max was wearing a long blue raincoat that had the name of the supermarket on the back. Max was standing next to a row of carts. He would push them together and then he would take them all back to the supermarket door. He looked around to see if there were any more left in the car park. Though there were designated(指定的)places for shoppers to leave the carts after shopping, some people were still so lazy that they just left them where they thought it was convenient for them. Just then Max saw two young boys in jackets wandering around aimlessly.
“They seem like students. They should be in school,” Max thought, “What are they doing here ” He then saw a small lady pushing a cart towards her car. The cart was full of shopping bags. She looked old and the weather was very bad. “I’ll go and take her cart for her,” Max said to himself.
Max started walking across the car park. The lady put her cart behind her car. She walked to her car door to unlock it when the two boys ran towards the cart. They immediately took the cart and quickly pushed it towards the road. The lady was terribly shocked and began to cry out.
