It was a sunny winter day. I had gone up and down the tower when, outside the little door at the foot, a blind man came toward me. He was a pale, thin man with dark glasses. He kept close to the inner wall of the courtyard. On reaching the door, he touched it and sharply turned inside. In a moment, he disappeared up the staircase. I stood still, looking at the little sign that said “To the Tower… ” I felt obliged to follow.
I didn’t follow closely. I caught up with him in the ticket office. There I was surprised to see the attendant selling him a ticket as though he were any other visitor. With the ticket in one hand and touching the wall with the other, he reached the staircase leading to the hallway.
“That man is blind,” I said to the attendant, but he showed no concern. “He’s blind,” I repeated. He didn’t answer, looking at me vacantly.
“Perhaps he wants to jump,” I said. But his chair was too comfortable. He didn’t stir. He still looked down at a crossword puzzle he had begun. I turned toward the staircase.
“The ticket,” the attendant said, rising from his chair. It seemed the only thing that could move him. After purchasing my ticket, I hurried up the staircase.
The man hadn’t gone as far as I imagined. After ten minutes, I approached him. “Excuse me,” I said as politely as I could, “but I am very curious to know why you came up.”
“You’d never guess,” he said.
“Not the view, I take it, or the fresh air on this winter day,” I said.
He smiled. “Coming up the stairs, one can feel the change-the coo staircase suddenly becomes quite warm, —and how up here behind the wall there is shade, but as soon as one goes opposite a narrow window one finds the sun. In all of Siena there is no place so good as here.”
He moved into the sunlight. Then he stepped into the shade. “Light, shade, light, shade,” he said, and seemed as pleased as a child who, in a game of hopscotch, jumps from square to square.
We went down the tower together. I left him, gladdened as one can only be by the sunlight.
24. Why did the author follow the blind man
A. To offer timely help. B. To satisfy his curiosity.
C. To teach him a lesson. D. To prevent him from climbing up.
25. What was the attendant’s attitude to visitors
A. Enthusiastic. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical.
26. What encouraged the blind man to climb the tower
A. The fresh air on the top. B. The pleasant childhood memories.
C. The fantastic view from the tower. D. The striking contrast between light and shade.
27. What message does the writer want to convey in the text
A. Nature is the best gift for humanity. B. When one door shuts, another opens in life.
C. Every individual can appreciate beauty in life.
D. The disadvantaged deserve care from the society.

Today’s Brussels sprouts (孢子甘蓝) taste better than you might remember from childhood, and that is because a new variety has replaced the original vegetable. You can thank plant breeders for the change. Modern breeders, armed with new gene-editing technology, are looking to reproduce Brussels sprouts’ reinvention.
In the late 1990s, scientists discovered specific chemicals which made Brussels sprouts taste bitter. Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals. Then they crossed these delicious but low-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they found a version that made plenty of tasty sprouts, transforming the vegetable from a bitter pill into a popular dish.
But other vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits (特性) that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters. For instance, disease resistance is probably the major focus these days of most breeding programs because that prevents the farmer from growing the crop. The taste of vegetables is ignored.
People, however, are now becoming interested in prioritizing the taste of vegetables thanks in part to new genetic technology. “There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques,” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.
Some companies are beginning to use those tools to deal with the challenge of developing tastier vegetables. One company, Pairwise, is fighting the same compounds that troubled Brussels sprouts. But this time researchers are improving the flavor of salad greens.
All vegetable growers hope that more flavorful products on store shelves will convince people to consume the recommended allowances (定量) of fruits and vegetables — and do so better than decades of nutritional guidance have. “Don’t waste your time talking about trying to educate people to eat better,” said Harry Klee, a professor who specializes in tomato breeding. “Just give them products that taste better and that they want to eat.”
28.Why did plant breeders grow old Brussels sprout seeds
A.To study why Brussels sprouts are bitter. B.To research the specific chemicals.
C.To select high-yielding products. D.To find the less bitter versions.
29.What does the underlined word “fared” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Survived. B.Emerged. C.Mushroomed. D.Succeeded.
30.What can we learn from Susan Brown’s words in paragraph 4
A.The breeding techniques are booming.
B.The breeding techniques need no improvement.
C.The breeders are struggling to develop new species.
D.The breeders should develop new genetic technology.
31.How can fruits and vegetables be consumed more according to Harry Klee
A.By enhancing the taste. B.By improving the nutrients.
C.By making them more accessible. D.By telling people the benefits.
D
Nobody likes to feel negative emotions: Anger, jealousy and regret can all be overwhelming. In fact, we dislike feeling negative emotions so much that some of us will do anything to avoid them, from adopting a sense of denial to turning to food or work as a distraction.
Deep down we know that we can’t be joyful all the time, so why do we have such a problem with the less-than-favorable feelings It’s natural for people to avoid or suppress negative emotions. We are biologically programmed above all else to survive, to keep ourselves safe; therefore, anything that our brain perceives as something out of our comfort zone, something that might harm us in any way is usually avoided. This is the default in-built programming we have inherited from our ancestors.
However, when we do, things don’t always work out well for us. “When we bury our emotions, they inevitably end up reappearing elsewhere further down the line,” says Dr. Elena Touroni, a consultant psychologist of The Chelsea Psychology Clinic. “Burying them in this way can cause a whole host of different issues and symptoms such as headaches and anxiety.”
Not only can burying our less-desirable emotions impact our well-being, but it also prevents us from enjoying the well-being rewards coming along with these emotions. Actually, it’s a sign of emotional well-being to be able to acknowledge and stay with the uncomfortable feelings instead of pushing them away or denying them. Negative emotions can be wonderful signposts if we pay attention to them. For example, a feeling of dread, uncertainty or fear in any working environment might be a great sign that you need to start to consider changing that environment.
Our emotions are a big part of being human and they serve an important function—even the difficult ones. As Elena says: “Without negative emotions, we would struggle to know our boundaries, how to keep ourselves safe, what hurts us or makes us happy. They can guide us toward making decisions that serve us in the long term.”
32. What is Paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A. The features of negative emotions. B. The definition of negative emotions.
C. The causes of avoiding negative emotions. D. The methods of avoiding negative emotions.
33. What does Dr. Elena Touroni suggest
A. Keeping a positive attitude. B. Ignoring the negative emotion.
C. Taking care of the physical condition. D. Acknowledging the uncomfortable feelings.
34. Why is the working environment mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To explain function of negative emotions.
B. To stress the benefits of negative emotions.
C. To prove the powerful influence of negative emotions.
D. To remind that negative emotions can change your job.
35. What can be the best title for the passage
A. The Good Side of Negative Emotions B. The Reasons for Negativity
C. The Influence of Negative Emotions D. The Ways to Embrace Negative Emotions

Sharing New Year with Strangers
I come from a large multicultural family, spread out across the globe. Despite being found in distant corners of the world, we're a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and keep in touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come together, no matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New Year and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her. Mantha was kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn't hard to get into the New Year spirit when she was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to visit everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area.We chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was —presents already bought and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day —and kissed goodbye when it was time to leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha's son called us saying Samantha had passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I'd only been messaging her the day before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite the
paramedic's best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we'd have a quiet day at home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law,Vera, told us about some colleagues of hers who'd just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were eager to experience a proper English New Year.

Take Care of our Eyes and Avoid Myopia
Dear fellow students,
We are living in an era of rapid technological development, when electronic products have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. However, along with this comes a sharp rise of myopia rate among teenagers from 14.5 % of 6-year-olds to over 80% of high school students, which is becoming a worrying phenomenon.
With National Eye Caring Day approaching, our school calls on everyone to pay attention to eye health. Firstly, develop eye caring habits such as looking into the distance every 20-30 minutes to rest our eyes and maintain eye exercises. Secondly, participate actively in outdoor activities to keep our eyes away from electronic products. Most importantly, ensure sufficient sleep and avoid staying up late.
For the health of our eyes, let’s take action now!

读后续写
Hearing this, we were in a dilemma. We were still immersed in enormous grief of aunt Mantha's passing away. However, it was cruel to decline the burning anticipation of Vera's colleagues. Just when we didn't know what to do, Mantha's kind smile popped into my head. I realized Mantha would have wanted us to open our doors and give them a cosy and magical New Year to remember, just like she did to everyone before. At the last minute, we dashed around shops, adding to the trolly presents, extra bottles of drinks and snacks.
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house. To give our new guests the full New Year experience, we tried hard to put our pain aside. We opened presents together, ate a fancy dinner and played wonderful games. All these didn't ease the pain of Mantha's absence but connecting with strangers and sharing our culture helped us get through the day. The first New Year without Mantha was difficult but it took on a deeper, more special meaning. It came from being together, putting aside our differences and showing one another love.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了现代植物育种者利用新的基因编辑技术,重新改良了甘蓝的品种,使其味道更好。
28.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“In the late 1990s, scientists discovered specific chemicals which made Brussels sprouts taste bitter. Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals.(在20世纪90年代末,科学家们发现了使孢子甘蓝尝起来苦的特殊化学物质。植物育种者开始种植以前因产量低而废弃的旧种子,以寻找含有较低这些特定化学物质的更美味的种子)”可知,植物育种家种植老球芽甘蓝种子寻找不那么苦的孢子甘蓝。故选D项。
29.词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits (特性) that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters.(这是因为大多数育种决定都倾向于对蔬菜种植者重要的植物特性,而不是对吃蔬菜的人)”可知,此处提到了其他蔬菜不太好即不太“成功”的原因,所以划线词是“成功”的意思。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据文章第四段““There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques, ” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.(“现在是水果育种或蔬菜育种的最佳时机,因为我们有更多的工具和技术,”康奈尔大学的苹果育种专家苏珊 布朗表示)”可推知,育种技术正在蓬勃发展。故选A项。

35. 主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合最后一段中“Without negative emotions, we would struggle to know our boundaries, how to keep ourselves safe, what hurts us or makes us happy. They can guide us toward making decisions that serve us in the long term.(如果没有负面情绪,我们很难知道自己的界限,如何保证自己的安全,什么会伤害我们,什么会让我们快乐。它们可以引导我们做出对我们长期有益的决定)”可知,本文通过阐述隐藏负面情绪所带来的坏结果和接受负面情绪所带来的好处来论证负面情绪是有益于我们的。因此A项“消极情绪好的一面”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选A项。
