If there’s one thing I’ve realized since becoming a male college student, it’s that finding a summer job is nearly impossible. I’ve applied to so many places and I’ve experienced so many interviews, but I always either get straight-up refusal or never hear from the company again.
One time, I even called one of the companies multiple times, but the manager avoided me. I was close to giving up. I felt like I was the only one struggling hard. I had a pretty good resume, and I always dressed nicely for my interviews, so why couldn’t I get a job
Well, the reason is actually right in front of me—I am a panies generally want students who can work all year long, but most of them aren’t willing to be flexible with schedules. I couldn’t tell you how many times interviewers told me that they were looking for someone permanent.
I tried looking for jobs marked as temporary ones. And I even once tried to apply through a temporary agency. But it didn’t work. Even if I wanted to work during the school year, none of the companies wanted to hire me because of my limited weekday availability. And despite not knowing if I could juggle (尽量兼顾) both school and a job, I even started to tell interviewers that I would like to work during the school year and give up my weekends. But I had no luck.
I’m not sure if there are others like me out there. But if you are going through something similar, what I want to tell you is to keep on trying. Despite being rejected so many times, I still applied for any job that I was qualified for. I even started my job search before the semester ended to get ahead. Eventually, I got my ideal summer job.
I know it’s frustrating, and you may feel like you’ve tried everything—that’s how I’ve felt for a long time. And now, with companies requiring years of experience, it’s even harder to get a job if you’re someone like me. But don’t give up. Keep searching and applying, sign up for sites that send you job offers and look on the university’s website for on-campus jobs.
4. What does the author want to convey in paragraph 2
A. His brilliant academic records.
B. The cause of his unemployment.
C. His jobless confusion in summer.
D. The social prejudice to graduates.
5. Why did the temporary agency fail the author
A. He was troubled with schoolwork.
B. He was thought to have tight work time.
C. He was unwilling to balance study and work.
D. He was regarded as an inexperienced student.
6. What can be concluded from paragraph 5
A. Well begun is half done.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Everything comes to him who waits.
D. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph
A. To give advice. B. To correct an error.
C. To compare occupations. D. To recall regrettable experiences.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者作为一名大学生找暑期工作频频受挫,但他没有放弃,最终找到了理想的暑期工作。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“One time, I even called one of the companies multiple times, but the manager avoided me. I was close to giving up.I felt like I was the only one struggling hard. I had a pretty good resume, and I always dressed nicely for my interviews, so why couldn’t I get a job (有一次,我甚至多次给其中一家公司打电话,但经理没有见我。我几乎要放弃了。我觉得只有我一个人在苦苦挣扎。我有一份很好的简历,面试时我总是穿着得体,所以为什么我找不到工作呢?)”可知,作者想在第2段中表达他失业时的困惑。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Even if I wanted to work during the school year, none of the companies wanted to hire me because of my limited weekday availability. And despite not knowing if I could juggle (尽量兼顾) both school and a job, I even started to tell interviewers that I would like to work during the school year and give up my weekends. But I had no luck. (即使我想在学年期间工作,也没有一家公司愿意雇佣我,因为我工作日的可用性有限。尽管我不知道自己是否能兼顾学校和工作,但我甚至开始告诉面试官,我想在学年工作,放弃周末。但我没有运气。)”可知,临时代理机构不愿意接纳作者是因为他们认为他工作时间很紧。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Despite being rejected so many times, I still applied for any job that I was qualified for. I even started my job search before the semester ended to get ahead. Eventually, I got my ideal summer job. (尽管被拒绝了很多次,我仍然申请了任何我有资格的工作。我甚至在学期结束前就开始找工作,最终找到了理想的暑期工作。)”可知,只要一个人愿意等待,事情必将会发生。故选C。
【7题详解】

An ancient Latin proverb says “Aquila non capit muscas” —cagles don’t hunt flies—meaning that important ones shouldn’t concern themselves with small, insignificant matters. But the lions in East Africa should concern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.
The story starts with the acacia trees(金合欢树)in an African wildlife area in central KenyaSome of these acacia trees provide food and shelter for specific ant species, which in turn defend the tree against herbivores(食草动物).The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivores that attempt to feed on the tree’s leavesThis is highly effective; the ants not only physically harm the herbivores but also release chemicals that can deter other potential attackers.
But these ants are in trouble.Another species called the “big-headed” ant is destroying entire groups of tree-protecting ants. This, in turn, sets off an entire chain of events that ends up influencing when and how lions can hunt.
This ant invasion(入侵)affects one thing after the other. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivores especially elephants. The elephants come in and eat the acacias at five to seven times the rate observed in uninvaded areas. The lions, while hunting for food, have no more trees to use for hiding. This reduced tree cover makes lions less successful at hunting and pushes them to find different areas to hunt in.
“These tiny invaders are pulling on the ties that put an African ecosystem together, determining who is eaten andwhere,” said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from Florida.
The lions, which are already endangered, are managing to cope with this by no longer focusing their attention on zebras. The zebras, of course, can see them much better on the approach given the lack of cover.Instead, they are targeting water buffalo. But this also isn’t the end of the story.Who knows what the lions’ changing strategy will mean for the ecosystem down the line
8. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 2mean
A. Direct. B. Discourage. C. Identify. D. Seek.
9. What role do the elephants play in the chain reaction
A Cooperating with “big-headed” ants. B. Damaging the hiding place for lions.
C. Protecting the acacias from herbivores. D. Starting off the disturbance of the chain.
10. The author mentions lions, zebras and water buffalo to show that ______.
A. animals fall victim to bigger ones B. the ecology is on the road to recovery
C. animals are corelated in the ecosystem D. species are firmly positioned in the food chain
11. What is the text mainly about
A. What ecologists find about animals. B. Why African lions are endangered.
C. How tiny ants affect the way lions hunt. D. How the law of the jungle works in Africa.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了小蚂蚁如何影响狮子的捕猎方式。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivores that attempt to feed on the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants not only physically harm the herbivores(蚂蚁正在积极攻击并赶走试图以树叶为食的食草动物。这是非常有效的;蚂蚁不仅在身体上伤害食草动物)”可知,蚂蚁对合欢树具有保护作用。由此猜测“ but also release chemicals that can deter other potential attackers.”意为“蚂蚁还释放出可以阻止其他潜在攻击者的化学物质”,即deter意为“阻止”,与discourage同义。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“This ant invasion(入侵)affects one thing after the other. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivores especially elephants. The elephants come in and eat the acacias at five to seven times the rate observed in uninvaded areas. The lions, while hunting for food, have no more trees to use for hiding.(蚂蚁的入侵影响了一件又一件事。这使得金合欢树无法抵御食草动物,尤其是大象。大象吃金合欢的速度是未被入侵地区的5到7倍。狮子在寻找食物的时候,没有更多的树可以用来躲藏。)”可知,在食物链中大象破坏狮子的藏身之处。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““These tiny invaders are pulling on the ties that put an African ecosystem together, determining who is eaten andwhere,” said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from Florida.(来自佛罗里达州的生态学家托德·帕尔默(Todd Palmer)说:“这些微小的入侵者正在拉动非洲生态系统的纽带,决定谁被吃掉,在哪里被吃掉。”)”和最后一段“The lions, which are already endangered, are managing to cope with this by no longer focusing their attention on zebras. The zebras, of course, can see them much better on the approach given the lack of cover. Instead, they are targeting water buffalo.
通读全文,并根据文章第一段“But the lions in East Africa should concern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.(但是东非的狮子应该关注这些看起来微不足道的蚂蚁,因为这些蚂蚁正在改变它们的生活方式。)”可知,文章主要介绍了小蚂蚁如何影响狮子的捕猎方式。故选C。
D
In the beginning, there was nothing. The vastness of an unborn galaxy was marked by the absence of sound, light and substance. Empty music stood on an empty stage. Then the universe began to form when colors and shapes began to dance across what we would soon come to call the sky, the stars and the planets. Sounds of an orchestra began to play, colorful and clean.
Gustay Holst’s “The Planets, Op. 32”, to put simply, is a magical piece of music. Written between 1914 and 1916, the suite has built a strong legacy. As explained by conductor Peter Bay, Holst found inspiration from a topic that has twisted the human mind for centuries. It cannot be argued how deeply our understanding of the planets has shaped our aesthetics and culture — and Holst takes full creative liberty with this insight.
Each movement proved spectacular. “Clouds” combines a solemn tone with that of peaceful permanence while “Festivals” follows with blooming joy and loud confidence. “Sirens” features the chorus, with their fascinating calls over the ebb and flow (起伏) of the orchestra itself. Different sections make for an impressive playing and listening experience.
The main event of the evening, to no surprise, proved an excellent journey across the planets that we find so familiar, bringing each to life with persistence and passion. In a world so focused on the digital, it is often easy to forget the power of live performance, particularly that of orchestral music. Yet, the richness and energy that flowed throughout the hall again proved the power of this art form and how fascinating collective sound can be.
12. What does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. The setting of the stage. B. The origin of the galaxy.
C. The formation of the universe. D. The technique of the orchestra.
13. How does the author develop the writing in paragraph 3
A. By listing examples. B. By analyzing models.
C. By comparing theories. D. By presenting arguments.
14. Why does the author mention the digital in the last paragraph
A. To praise its integration with music. B. To reveal the appeal of the live show.
C. To show the importance of technology. D. To emphasize its harm to concentration.
15. What can be the suitable title for the text
A. A Musical Journey across the Galaxy. B. A Magical Exploration of the Universe.
C. A Powerful Piece of Music on the Planets. D. A Creative Musician with Space Inspiration.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文为说明文。文章描述了古斯塔夫·霍尔斯特的作品《行星组曲》被称为奇妙的音乐,深受人们喜爱。作者强调了现场演出的力量,以及管弦乐带来的丰富能量和震撼性。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段中“In the beginning, there was nothing. (一开始,什么都没有。一个未出生的星系的浩瀚是以没有声音、光和物质为特征的。空荡的舞台上放着空荡的音乐。然后,当颜色和形状开始在我们后来称之为天空、恒星和行星的地方跳舞时,宇宙开始形成。管弦乐队的声音开始演奏,丰富多彩,干净。)”可知,作者在文章开头描述了舞台的设置。故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Each movement proved spectacular. “Clouds” combines a solemn tone with that of peaceful permanence, while “Festivals” follows with blooming joy and loud confidence. “Sirens” features the chorus, with their fascinating calls over the ebb and flow (起伏) of the orchestra itself. Different sections make for an impressive playing and listening experience. (每一个动作都很壮观。《云》将庄严的基调与平和的永恒相结合,而《节日》则以绽放的喜悦和响亮的自信紧随其后。“塞壬”的特点是合唱,他们迷人的呼唤在乐团本身的潮起潮落。不同的部分使令人印象深刻的演奏和聆听体验。)”可知,作者通过列举每个乐章的特点来展开描述,因此是通过举例的方式进行写作的。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The main event of the evening, to no surprise, proved an excellent journey across the planets that we find so familiar, bringing each to life with persistence and passion. In a world so focused on the digital, it is often easy to forget the power of live performance, particularly that of orchestral music. Yet, the richness and energy that flowed throughout the hall again proved the power of this art form and how fascinating collective sound can be.
通读全文,尤其是文章最后一段“The main event of the evening, to no surprise, proved an excellent journey across the planets that we find so familiar, bringing each to life with persistence and passion. In a world so focused on the digital, it is often easy to forget the power of live performance, particularly that of orchestral music. Yet, the richness and energy that flowed throughout the hall again proved the power of this art form and how fascinating collective sound can be. 故选A。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Translation is an essential tool for effective communication. A common way of getting any translation done is to turn to human translators. However, machine translators have developed rapidly in recent years. Many people claim that they will replace human translators soon. ____16____
Machines may fail to understand culture properly. Different cultures have different words that are unique to that specific culture. Machines cannot understand or recognize idioms, slang, and allusions (典故). ____17____ By contrast, human translators can find the suitable equivalent (对应物) in the target language based on the cultural background.
____18____ In different languages, there are words with various meanings, which can be a significant problem for machine translators. These words have to be placed in context to determine their true meanings and in many cases only human translators can do this. If you run a document with this kind of words through a machine translator, it may lead to inaccurate translations.
It is difficult to localize machines for different languages. New phrases are being developed in almost all languages. ____19____ If you feed new words into a machine translator, the machine might go “speechless” , trying to come up with the most appropriate way to translate the strange combination of words. Human translators, on the other hand, can pick up on the development in a language quickly.
It’s difficult for machines to distinguish style and tone. Every written document has a different style and tone. A document can have poetic, funny or persuasive style and tone. Machine translators may lose the intended style and tone existing in the original document. ____20____ And such a translation can hardly resonate (引起共鸣) with the person who reads it.
A. Machines can’t relate words to the context.
B. Machines can’t remember words of all languages
C. It doesn’t actually hold up for some reasons.
D. Thus the result is a flat and soulless translation.
E. Machine translators are unable to catch these changes in time.
F. This is one challenge they may find very difficult to overcome.
G. Machine translators are becoming more and more popular these days.
【答案】16. C 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了机器翻译无法取代人工的翻译的几点原因。
16题详解】
根据上文“Translation is an essential tool for effective communication. A common way of getting any translation done is to turn to human translators. However, machine translators have developed rapidly in recent years. Many people claim that they will replace human translators soon.(翻译是有效沟通的重要工具。完成任何翻译的一种常见方法是求助于人工翻译。然而,机器翻译近年来发展迅速。许多人声称他们很快就会取代人工翻译)”以及后文“Machines may fail to understand culture properly.(机器可能无法正确理解文化)”等列举了机器无法取代人工翻译的理由,可知,本句是在说明这种说法并不成立。故C选项“由于某些原因,这实际上并不成立”符合语境,故选C。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Different cultures have different words that are unique to that specific culture. Machines cannot understand or recognize idioms, slang, and allusions
根据后文“In different languages, there are words with various meanings, which can be a significant problem for machine translators. These words have to be placed in context to determine their true meanings and in many cases only human translators can do this. If you run a document with this kind of words through a machine translator, it may lead to inaccurate translations.(在不同的语言中,有不同含义的单词,这对于机器翻译来说可能是一个重大问题。这些词必须放在上下文中才能确定它们的真正含义,在许多情况下只有人工翻译才能做到这一点。如果你通过机器翻译运行带有这类单词的文档,可能会导致翻译不准确)”可知,本段的主旨是机器无法联系上下文,A选项中context对应后文context。故A选项“机器不能把单词和上下文联系起来”符合语境,故选A。
【19题详解】
根据上文“It is difficult to localize machines for different languages. New phrases are being developed in almost all languages.(为不同的语言本地化机器是很困难的。几乎所有的语言都在发展新的短语)”以及后文“If you feed new words into a machine translator, the machine might go “speechless” , trying to come up with the most appropriate way to translate the strange combination of words. Human translators, on the other hand, can pick up on the development in a language quickly.(如果你把新单词输入机器翻译,机器可能会“无语”,试图想出最合适的方法来翻译这些奇怪的单词组合。另一方面,人工翻译可以迅速了解语言的发展)”可知,后文的例子表明语言发展迅速,机器无法适应新的短语,导致翻译失败。故E选项“机器翻译无法及时捕捉到这些变化”符合语境,故选E。
【20题详解】
根据上文“It’s difficult for machines to distinguish style and tone. Every written document has a different style and tone. A document can have poetic, funny or persuasive style and tone. Machine translators may lose the intended style and tone existing in the original document.(机器很难区分风格和语气。每一份书面文件都有不同的风格和语气。一份文件可以有诗意的、有趣的或有说服力的风格和语气。机器翻译可能会失去原文档中存在的预期风格和语气)”可知,本句与上文构成因果关系,指出机器翻译失去原文档中存在的预期风格和语气,结果导致文章平淡无味,故D选项“因此,翻译的结果是平淡无味的”符合语境,故选D。

When Mary entered the south Pole Penguin Research Lab, she saw her friend Tom gently stroking (轻抚) a penguin in his arms. As children of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to extreme temperatures —insights that could aid human survival.
“We’re thirteen, Tom. It’s time to grow up and stop playing with the lab penguins,” said Mary as she started cleaning. “They’re research animals, not pets.”
“But the birds listen to me1” insisted Tom, his breath forming a cloud in the freezing air. “You’re just trying to be a penguin whisperer again,” Mary replied, shaking her head with a gentle smile. The penguins seemed playful as they walked, dove, swam and chased their live fish for sport before eating.
Suddenly , an alarm rang out and red lights flashed , signaling a problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. “It’s colder than before —there’s ice forming on the water,” noted Tom. Though always cold, Mary had never seen ice here before. She checked the habitat monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot. “The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents’ research team, who were conducting outdoor studies. With the adults away, the kids would have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing cold caused them to shake. “I wonder what emperor penguins do in extreme cold, since they stay in the Pole all winter instead of going somewhere warmer,” asked Mary. “They huddle (挤作一团), ” Tom answered. “They huddle together tightly so that the birds in the middle will be warm enough.” “What about the ones on the edge ” Mary asked. “They push their way towards the center, and then move back out to the edge, and struggle back again. Scientists in the early 21st century recorded it.” He replied as he stared at the large crowd of the penguins in the lab.

1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. Spreading his arms, he suggested joining the penguin huddles. Worried that the penguins wouldn’t let them, Mary hesitated but was soon persuaded by Tom’s assuring grin. He slowly approached the crowded penguins, crouching down. Gently stroking them with care, he whispered softly. Though startled at first, the penguins recognized Tom and let him into their group. Mary quickly followed. The children squeezed into the huddle’s edge with the penguins. Just as the birds did, they moved toward the middle and back out as the group shifted.
Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help. Rushing in calling for the kids, they were surprised. The children were safely surrounded by Emperors in a large bundle. When asked how they stayed warm, the kids looked at each other proudly. “We used what the Emperor Penguins do,” they told their parents. Mary patted Tom’s shoulder with admiration, calling him a penguin whisperer. With a big smile, Tom gave credit to the penguins who taught them a lot. Their teamwork had seen them through the difficult cold with the penguins’ aid.

I know it’s frustrating and you may feel like you’ve tried everything—that’s how I’ve felt for a long time.
B The cause of his unemployment.
D All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph
A. To give advice. B. To correct an error.
C. To compare occupations. D. To recall regrettable experiences.

Every Lunar New Year, China introduces a zodiac(生肖) sign from a cycle of 12 lucky animals. This year, it’s the Year of the Dragon, or more ___36___ (accurate), ”the Year of the Loong”. Then what’s the difference
The Western ___37___ (describe) of dragons as “fire-breathing winged creatures” was inspired by literature such as Beowulf - the Old English epic about a Scandinavian hero ___38___contribution was killing monsters, including a dragon. Greek fairy tales also presented dragons___39___violent sea monsters or guards of valuable ___40___ (possession). By contrast, “loong”, a word___41___ (create) in the 19th century, reminds people of strength and fortune, and should___42___ (distinguish) from its Western cousin. In Shiji, ___43___2, 000-year-old Chinese history book, the emperor’s mother dreamed of a dragon lying on her body, ___44___ (predict) the birth of a future emperor. Exactly for this reason, Chinese people proudly claim they are “descendants of the Loong” .
Therefore, some culture experts have been calling for a switch to ”loong” ___45___ (tell) the Chinese dragon from the frightening monsters of Western tales. The call is also in line with the push for cultural confidence to choose the preferred translation of the Mandarin word for a creature long respected in Chinese culture.
