As a hockey parent, while watching my son played from Mite to Bantam, House League to Travel, I’ve learned that losing may be best for kids.
In his third season in 2019, my son’s team never lost more than three straight games. There was happiness, boasting, celebration, pizza. In short, it was a typically good youth hockey season. He improved as a player, but did not much change as a person.
However, what happened the next year added its story to the legends of sporting incompetence. Not merely weak but prettily bad, this team lost 40 of their first 50 games, most of the defeats coming in the course of two losing streaks. For a time, I worried that these streaks would kill my child’s love of the game.
But that’s not what happened. As bad as it got, the losing was clarifying. It weeded out the kids who were in it less for the game than the glory, leaving just the die-hards behind. What started as a list of 17 of the team was cut down to 12. It was especially instructive for the kids. It taught him a great truth of the world: For everyone good, there is someone better.
What’s more, the kids were learning the game in a way that only losing can teach. Each player got to play everywhere, to learn and appreciate the role of every position on the ice. They kept an eye on their opponents too, studying and incorporating the tricks of success. In an effort to break the streak, they went back to basics, accepted the wisdom of the hockey ancients: If playing like a team, they can defeat a collection of all-stars; If doing small and unappreciated tasks well, they can get the goal.
This new team had character and could never be counted out, no matter the score. They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.
4. What does the author think about the son’s team in the third season in 2019
A. The team had a bad performance.
B. The team didn’t live up to the author’s expectations.
C. The team played typically well and won all the games.
D. The team didn’t have the spirit of facing failure.
5. What does the underlined word “clarify” refer to
A. The losing made the kids better understand hockey.
B. The losing helped the kids learn a great truth of the world.
C. The losing separated true player from those playing for glory.
D. The losing boosted the kids’ teamwork.
6. According to the author, what have the son’s team learned
A. For everything big, there is something bigger.
B. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
C. God helps those who help themselves.
D. The hardest battle you’re going to fight is the battle to be just you.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. How Kids Can Deal With Losing B. What Kids Can Learn From Losing
C. Why Kids Can Benefit From Losing D. How Kids Can Get Over From Losing
D 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据第二段“In his third season in 2019, my son’s team never lost more than three straight games. There was happiness, boasting, celebration, pizza. In short, it was a typically good youth hockey season. He improved as a player, but did not much change as a person.(2019年是我儿子的第三个赛季,他所在的球队从未输过3场以上的比赛。有快乐,有吹嘘,有庆祝,有披萨。简而言之,这是一个典型的优秀青年曲棍球赛季。作为一名球员,他有了进步,但作为一个人,他并没有太大的变化)”可知,2019年的第三个赛季,作者儿子的球队非常优秀,虽然失败过,但是还是很开心,并没有真正体会到失败带给他们的影响。由此推知,作者认为儿子的球队缺乏面对失败的精神。故选D。
【5题详解】
指代猜测题。根据划线单词下文“It weeded out the kids who were in it less for the game than the glory, leaving just the die-hards behind.(它淘汰了那些不是为了比赛,而是为了荣誉的孩子,只留下了顽固分子)”可知,虽然孩子的球队比赛失败,但是失败让一切变得很明朗,因为这淘汰了那些不是为了比赛,而是为了荣誉的孩子,只留下了顽固分子。
根据最后一段中的“They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.(他们学到了最重要的一课:你可以输但不被打败。他们勉强进入州锦标赛,然后一路进入决赛,在加时赛中决出冠军。当他们输掉比赛,进入握手的行列时,他们并不是作为亚军,而是作为一支以唯一的方式——失败——成为赢家的球队)”可知,作者儿子的团队虽然失败了,但他们不断进步,不断面对更大的挑战,成为更好的自己。由此可推知,作者认为,孩子们学到的教训是:对于强大的挑战,要不断进步,因为总有更大挑战在等着你。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“I’ve learned that losing may be best for kids.(我明白了输球对孩子来说可能是最好的)”和最后一段中的“They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.(他们学到了最重要的一课:你可以输但不被打败。他们勉强进入州锦标赛,然后一路进入决赛,在加时赛中决出冠军。当他们输掉比赛,进入握手的行列时,他们并不是作为亚军,而是作为一支以唯一的方式——失败——成为赢家的球队)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者的孩子和其队友打曲棍球,他们从不断的失败中学到了一些教训。由此可知,B选项“What Kids Can Learn From Losing(孩子们能从失败中学到什么)”适合作文章最佳标题。故选B。
C
A high school teacher and his students have discovered that an asteroid (小行星) hit by a NASA spacecraft, in a test run for saving the Earth from an impact, is behaving unexpectedly. The find could have effects on future planetary defense missions.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is a project designed to launch and crash a fridge-sized spacecraft into an asteroid called Dimorphos, orbiting a larger asteroid Didymos. The purpose of the exercise was to see how significantly the previous path of Dimorphos could be changed by the impact. Before DART’s impact, it would take Dimorphos 11 hours and 55 minutes to complete a lap around Didymos. NASA was hoping the DART crash could change the cycle by about 73 seconds, but observations made in the weeks following the impact determined that the results were much more significant, reducing Dimorphos’ orbital period by some 33 minutes.
But California high school teacher Jonathan Swift and his students discovered that Dimorphos’ orbital period was a full minute longer than the time reported by NASA last year. They used the school’s observatory to track Dimorphos and Didymos for several months last fall. Swift presented his class’ findings at the American Astronomical Society conference in June. The DART team has since confirmed that Dimorphos did indeed continue slowing in its orbit up to a month after the impact.
Scientists aren’t sure exactly what is behind the slowdown of Dimorphos. But recent observations of the asteroid have revealed a vast field of large rocks were kicked up by the impact. It’s possible that some of the larger space rocks fell back onto Dimorphos within that first month, slowing its orbit further, DART team member Harrison Agrusa said.
The DART team plans to release its own report on the unexpected findings in the coming weeks. However, complete answers may have to wait until 2026, when the European Space Ageney’s Hera spacecraft is scheduled to investigate the crash site up closely.
8. What was the purpose of launching the NASA spacecraft
A. To change Dimorphos’ orbital cycle.
B. To stop Dimorphos hitting the Earth.
C. To reduce Didymos’ path around the sun.
D. To make Didymos move in a bigger orbit.
9. How much did Swift and his students find the asteroid’s orbital period shortened by
A. 1 full minute. B. 2 minutes or so.
C. Nearly 33 minutes. D. About 32 minutes.
10. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4
A. How seriously Dimorphos was damaged.
B. What happened to the rocks on Dimorphos.
C. Why Dimorphos slowed down for a month.
D. What Dimorphos looked like after the impact.
11. What can be the Hera spacecraf’s task
A. To crash into another asteroid nearby.
B. To measure the previous impact results.
C. To affect the motion of the twin asteroids.
D. To identify the asteroids threatening the Earth.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B

Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, the chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, enlarge our eyes, and sharpen our jawlines. With a couple of taps on our mobile phones, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is that when we simply edit out our imperfections, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered Photographs. The article analyzed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility of causing anxiety about appearance. The researchers also warned that such apps might make the young generation misjudge themselves. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article read.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous persons. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to the fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spent too much time making such comparisons, they might become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror, and it’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look at ourselves in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos ” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”
12. Before uploading a photo to social media, what will we probably do
A. We will probably have an operation to make our eyes look bigger.
B. We will probably use a cream to smooth our skin.
C. We will probably use an app to fix our photos.
D. We will probably edit some text.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B. Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxiety about their appearance.
C. Photo editing apps can make us more beautiful.
D. Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
14. When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A. Because they compare their looks to those of famous persons.
B. Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
15. According to Engeln, we should ________.
A. feel good about what we actually look like
B. spend more time making comparisons of our real self to the fake self
C. take a mirror with us everywhere
D. try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos
C 13. B 14. D 15. A

故A选项“Acknowledge your bitter or envious feelings. 故选 A。
根据段落小标题“Separate your worth from your accomplishments. (将你的价值与成就分开。)”以及本段后文“But it’s important to remember that your self-worth doesn’t come from attaining external things. (但重要的是要记住,你的自我价值不是来自于获得外在的东西。)”可知,本段讨论的是将个人价值与成就分离的重要性,强调不应从外部成就来定义自我价值。选项G“There are expectations what success is supposed to be in our achievement-driven society. (在我们这个以成就为导向的社会中,对于成功有着既定的期望。)”为这一段提供了背景信息,解释了为什么人们会不自觉地将自我价值与成就挂钩,进而引出需要重新定义成功和个人幸福的意义。故而选 G。
【19题详解】
根据本段小标题“Remember: It’s not a competition. (记住:这不是一场比赛。)”可知,本段以“这不是一场竞赛”的主题展开,指出朋友的成功并不意味着自己的失败,选项F“You need to let go of this idea that if they’re winning something, that means you’re losing. (你需要放弃这样的想法,即如果他们赢了什么,就意味着你输了。)”直接呼应了该段落的核心论点,即放弃把人际关系视为输赢的思维模式。故选F。
【20题详解】
本段为全文总结段,根据前文内容“It’s totally okay to experience occasional waves of envy even with the people you genuinely want to see happy. What truly defines you as a friend is how you handle these emotions. If you need a little space to lick your wounds after receiving a close pal’s exciting news, just do it. (偶尔经历一波又一波的嫉妒是完全可以的,即使是和你真正想看到快乐的人在一起。真正将你定义为朋友的是你如何处理这些情绪。如果你在收到亲密朋友的激动人心的消息后需要一点空间来舔舐伤口,那就去做吧。)”可知,最后一段提到了处理嫉妒情绪的一个实际做法,即如果在听到朋友的好消息后需要时间调整自己的情绪,给自己一点空间是可以接受的。选项E“That doesn’t make you a fool— it makes you human. (这并不会让你显得愚蠢——这只会让你显得更有人性。)”为这一行为提供了合理性,指出情感的波动是人之常情,无需过分自责。故选E。

We spent one week in the wild rainforests learning about endangered animals from wildlife professionals. We observed how different species of monkeys adapted themselves to their natural habitats. Plus, various activities to help protect them have been organized, such as picking up plastics, removing nets and traps and putting up posters.
Michelle was eight years old when she heard Mom and Dad talking about her little brother,Jack, now only a baby. He was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very expensive operation could save Jack now but there was no one from whom they could borrow the money. She heard Dad say to her sad mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Hearing the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little money box. After counting the coins three times, she walked out of the back door secretly and made her way to the drugstore six blocks away.
She waited for a long time before the pharmacist(药剂师)turned around and asked her, “What do you want ”
“Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon ” said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost ”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said.“Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” And with these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pockets. At that time,a well-dressed man behind Michelle bent down and asked the little girl, “I’m selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”
“One dollar and eleven cents,” Michelle answered in a low voice.“And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if necessary.”
“Well,” the man smiled, “a dollar and eleven cents is the exact price of a miracle for your little brother. Show me the place where your brother lives.”
Holding the man’s hand, Michelle took him home.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“We can’t repay you for your help, but we believe that good things happen to good people,” said Michelle’s parents.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Holding the man’s hand, Michelle took him home. Her parents couldn’t believe their ears when they heard her explanation. That well-dressed man turned out to be a doctor. Later, Jack was taken away. The operation was completed with a payment of one dollar and eleven cents and it wasn’t long before Jack was home and got well again. Michelle was very happy. Now she knew the exact price of a miracle — one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.
“We can’t repay you for your help, but we believe that good things happen to good people,” said Michelle’s parents. The man told them his story. When he was Jack’s age, he was in the same situation as Jack. It was his sister who saved his life. Finally, the man said to them, “It doesn’t matter how much money Michelle actually had with her. What matters is her faith, a faith that miracles do exist. So the person you really have to thank is Michelle.”

③发生:happen/take place/occur

9. How much did Swift and his students find the asteroid’s orbital period shortened by
A. 1 full minute. B. 2 minutes or so.
C. Nearly 33 minutes. D. About 32 minutes.
10. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4
A How seriously Dimorphos was damaged.
B. What happened to the rocks on Dimorphos.
C. Why Dimorphos slowed down for a month.
D. What Dimorphos looked like after the impact.
11. What can be the Hera spacecraf’s task
A. To crash into another asteroid nearby.
