It’s all about patience(耐性) really.
Chinese walkers, who usually walk the red light together, may be surprised at recent research which showed that they are more patient than people abroad.
A study looked at more than 1,800 walkers at three busy Shanghai crossings(交叉路口). It found that an average Chinese walker ran out of patience at red lights after 90 seconds. But there’s an interesting fact: the average German’s endurance ability(耐性) was around 60 seconds while the British only 45 seconds and the American 40 seconds.
People will take no notice of the red lights when the waiting time exceeds(超过) their patience time. “A lot of Chinese traffic lights are car-friendly instead of walker-friendly,” said Ni Ying, who led the research team. As there are more and more car users in the city, city planners are giving them more convenience on the roads, according to her.
The study also found that at some crossings, walkers waited longer than 150 seconds, and at other crossings the wait could be as long as 200 seconds. However, most red lights abroad do not exceed 120 seconds.
The study suggested that planners should think about the walking pace(步幅) of people from different age groups, especially middle-aged people and seniors, in order to make the roads more walker-friendly. But the city’s traffic police do not agree. They argue that the roads are built not just for the walkers, but also for cars. “To give more time for walkers would cut down the time for cars,” a traffic policeman said. “On a busy traffic day, it can make traffic worse.”
1. Who are the most patient among the people from four different countries
A. The Chinese. B. The German. C. The British. D. The American
2. According to the passage, Chinese walkers walk the red light because________
A. they are not afraid of the traffic police.
B. they are not friendly to car users.
C. there is often something wrong with the red lights.
D. the waiting time at the crossings is too long.
3. What does “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. City planners. B. Walkers. C. Car users. D. The research team.
4. How could roads become more friendly to walkers according to the study
A. By taking away the traffic lights.
B. By making the roads wider and look nicer.
C. By changing the waiting time according to people’s walking pace.
D. By stopping the middle-aged people from walking across the roads.
5. Which of the following will the traffic police agree with
A. It’s right to give more time to walkers.
B. Reducing time for car users will make traffic worse.
C. We should encourage people to walk instead of driving.
D. We should build more roads to meet the need of different people.

This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts (花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: let the coin decide. I flipped (掷) a coin and ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way ”
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American war of independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster, Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: no re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. Have you wondered why you have two eyes and why they are set close together on the front of your face The reasons are simple and important.
Your eyes are like two small cameras. A camera catches an image of an object and records it on film. Similarly, when you look at something, each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball. Because your eyes are set close together, they see the world from about the same height but from a little different angles. While your right eye sees an object a little to the right, your left eye sees the same object a bit to the left. Working as a team, the eyes send the images to your brain, then your brain put them together and you see a single image in the center.
Seeing in stereo (立体) means seeing with two eyes working tighter, which is called stereoscopic sight. This allows you to see the world in 3D. Seeing depth helps you to judge how far it is between you and the objects you see, and then adjust to the changing angle so that you can see something clearly when you move closer or farther away. If images are coming from a single eye, however, only height and width can be perceived. So if you see with one eye, you will get a 2D image, as in a photograph.
Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face. Think of other animals just like you. They are all hunting animals, like lions and tigers. This provides a field of sight about 180 degree wide, which is called binocular sight. On the other hand, animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head, which provides nearly 360-degree field of sight. However, they don’t have stereoscopic sight. It is difficult for them to judge how far a danger is.
With both stereoscopic and binocular sight, humans and hunting animals share the ability to see from side to side and to judge how far it is from other objects. If you think it would be great to have another kind of sight, perhaps with hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do, think again! Each tiny insect eye sees only a tiny part. Besides, what if you needed glasses Be glad for the eyesight that you have.
1. In Paragraph 2, the writer wants to.
A. tell us how our two eyes works B. show the importance of eyes
C. compare our eyes with cameras D. suggest using two eyes properly
2. The underlined word “perceived” in Paragraph 3 means.
A. set B. taken C. seen D. made
3. Which of the following statement is TRUE
A. Your right and left eyes gain the same image when looking at the same object.
B. 2D images can always show depth, height and width.
C. Animals that are hunted usually see the world through stereoscopic sight.
D. Fish with eyes on the sides of their heads have nearly 360-degree field of sight.
4. In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that “seeing in stereo” ________.
A. is similar to the way a camera works
B. is an ability humans are lucky to have
C. would be better for a wilder field of sight
D. helps people to have better sight than animals
5. What is probably the best title for this passage
A. Seeing in stereo B. Protecting your eyes
C. Treasuring your eyes D. Seeing with eyes

Zheng He, the Columbus of the East, was an amazing man.
He was born in 1371 and, 11 years later, was caught by the army of a rich young man called Zhu Di and made to work for him. Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403 Zhu Di was made the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government.
The King wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He ordered many new ships to be built and made Zheng He their leader. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven sea trips to different parts of the world. He certainly travelled to India, Africa and the Middle East. A few people think his ships may have even reached South America and Australia.
Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50 000 kms during the years of his travels. With 28 000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even soldiers' horses, Zheng He led a fleet whose size would not be equaled by Europeans for over 500 years.
On these trips he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe.
It is a pity that we may never learn everything about Zheng He's travels. After he died in 1433, the new king, who believed these trips were unlucky and too expensive, had them stopped and he burned almost all the books about Zheng He's travels. It is only in the last 50 years that historians have begun to carefully study the adventures of the great Zheng He.

First of all, you should say sorry right away to Joan. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that's up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you're truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying:" If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And good luck! Aggie

A. Joe@ B. Joan@

These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year”between their graduation from school and their university studies. This means they can take a year off to do something else, before they start their studies.
For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favorite activity --- and Australia is the favorite place to go.
Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values.
“After a year of travelling, I felt I’d grown up. I had learnt the importance of relationships with people, on all kinds of levels.”
There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects---helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills---decision making and finding answers to problems, for example---that will help many students in a job one day.
Finally, getting some knowledge and experience in an area you hope to study or work in one day will always be very useful.

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade. I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons go through.
When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism . He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day,Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.
After this talk,no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us. My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

You know how much your telephone has changed over the past 10 years Your car will change even more than that in the next 10 years. One of the biggest changes is that cars will drive themselves.
“We certainly have the technology for it now.”says Andrew Poliak of automotive(机动车辆的)technology supplier QNX.“We expect self-driving cars to be a mainstream thing between 2020 and 2025.”
The American company Google has been working on self-driving cars for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States and are truly self-driving. They have to steering wheels(方向盘)or pedals(踏板). Last week, the police ordered one of Google's cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. The car was not breaking any law, so no one was punished.
Another American company, Tesla, added an “Autopilot” feature to its cars last month. With the Autopilot turned on, the vehicle drives itself. The car will speed up, slow down, brake and drive by itself. You can take over driving any time by turning the steering wheel or touching a pedal. The car uses sensors to know when driveway changing is safe and whether it should speed up or slow down.
Tesla Autopilot is made for cross-country driving. It keeps you in the driveway and helps you avoid hitting other cars. It does not work well on local roads, for it will not stop at a red light or stop sign.
Reporter Carolyn Nicander Mohr tried the Autopilot feature of a Tesla earlier this month. She had a hard time trusting the car to do what it should do. She thought about disabling the Autopilot feature many times during her trip. She wanted to take control at every bend in the road and hit the brake when the car in front of her slowed down. Yet the car drove perfectly.
Other companies are working on self-driving cars, too. Marcedes-Benz, Audi, BMW.Volvo and Toyota all have plans for such vehicles.

Can plants eat people Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big. And they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap(捕蝇草)。
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.

When migrants(移民) arrive in the US, they face a world that can be confusing in many ways. They need to learn to live in a different environment. Some laws and rules are written down. They can learn about them before they arrive. But there are lots of "unwritten rules," too. Unwritten rules are behaviors that no one talks about, but that most people understand.
Here is a list of five important issues any new arrival to the U.S. should know about.
Be "on time." In some cultures, time is not a big issue. If you tell your friend to meet you at 2 p.m. and you arrive at 2:45 p.m., there is no problem. In the U.S., people feel that being on time is a sign of respect. If you are late by more than a few minutes, people will think you do not care. They will feel you are wasting their time. They will take your lateness as an insult.
Be sure you always "tip." In many countries, after you eat at a restaurant, you only pay the amount shown on the bill. But, in the U.S., people who work in restaurants and bars often earn a low hourly wage. So, they try to provide excellent service, hoping the customer will give them a "tip," meaning a little extra. People in the U.S. tip between 15 percent and 20 percent of the bill. You also give tips to taxi drivers, hotel employees and the people who cut your hair.
Be careful what you say. Any place you go there will be some things that are proper to talk about and some things that are not. Supposing that people have the same beliefs as you is a bad idea. In the past decade, people in the U.S. have become more open about discussing strong political and religious views. But it is still best to listen to people share their opinions first and then decide about sharing your own. Also, there are several topics you should avoid asking questions about: how much money a person makes and if they are married. But if a person offers this information, then there is no problem.
Be polite for the situation. People in the U.S. define being polite in very special ways. For example, waiting in line involves a strong set of rules in this country. You must wait until the people in front of you have done what they are waiting to do. When going through a door, the person behind you expects you to hold the door for them. Also, it is common for people you do not know to say hello to you when passing you. But this does not always mean they are inviting you to stop and talk for a long time. Many times the person is just being friendly. If you don't say hello back to them they may think you are being unfriendly.
1. The passage talks about several issues except ______.
A. time B. personal space C. giving tip D. education
2. What's the meaning of the word confusing in paragraph 1
A. 轻而易举的 B. 引人发笑的 C. 令人疑惑的 D. 令人尴尬的
3. If you are late in the U. S., the one you meet________.
A. will insult you
B. will think you don't respect him/her
C. will think it's okay
D. will ask you for some tip
4. How many examples are shown on "being polite"
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
5. Which of the following is TRUE in the US
A. It's not polite to ask a person if he/she is married.
B. You'd better think that people have the same beliefs as you.
C. It's not allowed to discuss about religious views.
D. People usually tip 80 dollars if their bill is 80 dollars.

Manufacturing(制造业) is an important industry in the United States. However, for many years, Americans have expressed fear that the industry is in danger.
Matthew Burnett knows this all too well. The American businessman started a watch company in 2007. At first, he had overseas(海外的) manufacturers make all his products. As a result, Burnett often faced shipping delays(延误), a lack(缺乏) of quality control, and time zone problems. Later, he developed into leather goods. Still, he tried to find factories in the country to make the wallets, belts, and other products of his new brand. And he was not alone. Many American businessmen found it easier to go out of the country for manufacturing. There was no central marketplace for the industry.
So, Matthew Burnett, and his business partner Tanya Menendez, created one. They called it Maker's Row. Since 2012, the online marketplace has been connecting businessmen with American manufacturers.
Matthew Burnett explains. "What we try to do at Maker's Row is to encourage the brands to start producing in the United States so that you see more made in America products on the shelves. We used to produce 97 percent of the goods that we consume here in the United States, today it's less than three percent. So it makes it very challenging to find sometimes made in America products, but that's the situation we're trying to change, by bringing these brands back home to produce."
Maker's Row helps brands and businesses find and organize their supply chains(供应链)in the country. Besides, Maker's Row can be especially helpful to new or part-time entrepreneurs(企业家). The site, , can provide a plan for turning an idea into a business. And co-founder Tanya Menendez says Maker's Row offers classes and training. "We have an online course. They're designed for people with busy lifestyles or those who may start off working 9-to-5." Today, the Maker's Row website has 80,000 registered users.
The BCG company in Boston advises businesses around the world. It estimates(估计) the average cost to manufacture goods in the U.S. is only five-percent higher than in China. And the company predicts(预计) that by 2018 the cost difference will narrow further, to as little as two percent higher. Maker's Row and other similar efforts could play a big part in making that prediction come true.
1. What is true about the situation of manufacturing in the U.S.

B. It’s important and the top of the world.
C. It’s importand in the country but not as good as before.

B. Shipping delay, high pay, and a lack of quality control.
C. A lack of shipping control, high pay and a lack of time.
D. Different time zones, shipping delay, a lack of labour.
3. What is the main purpose of Maker's Row
A. To help college students learn to start their business.
B. To have more products made in America.
C. To encourage businessmen to find overseas manufacturers.
D. To raise money through online lessons.

I sat down to read under an old tree in the park. I felt my life was hopeless, I didn’t take an interest in anything. I thought that my whole world was dark.
A young boy ran up to me, out of breath. He stood right before me with his head down and said excitedly, “Look what I found!” in his hand was a flower, and what a poor sight! The flower was dry and dead. I gave him a small smile and then turned my eyes away so that he could take his dry flower and go off to play. I didn’t want to talk with him at all.
However, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and said in surprise, “It smells sweet and it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it. Here, it’s for you.” The flower before me was dead. But I knew I must accept it, or he might never leave. So I accepted the flower, and replied, “This is just what I want, thank you.” Just then, for the first time I noticed that the boy could not see --- he was blind.
Tears came down my face as I thanked him for picking the best one. “You’re welcome.” he smiled, and then ran off to play. I sat there and wondered how he was able to learn about my pain.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all those years I myself had been blind. In fact I never found there is always something beautiful around me in life. I decided to see the beauty of life, and enjoy every second of my life. And then I held that dry flower up to my nose and breathed in the smell of a beautiful rose.
