While carrying your schoolbag on the way to school or home, does the heavy weight of your books make you less interested to learn knowledge Don’t worry. E-readers may help you say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag.
An e-reader has the memory space to hold hundreds of books. So people want to replace heavy schoolbags with small, light e-readers. For example, Cushing Academy, a high school in Massachusetts, US, got rid of most of the 20,000 books in its library last summer. The head of the library said that the school was going to replace printed books with e-books. Teachers and students will use e-readers instead.
Most e-readers are thin and weigh less than 500g. They can download an e-book within 60 seconds. “It’s so convenient. You can have so many books right at your fingertips!” said Meghan Chenausky, 16.
Chinese schoolchildren are also trying e-readers. At the 2020 Shanghai Book Fair, an e-schoolbag was on show. It is a special e-reader that students can use to download textbooks from the school servers. It can also send and receive homework.
Some schools in Beijing and Shanghai have tried this e-schoolbag for a few years. “It’s excellent. I don’t have to carry a heavy schoolbag anymore,” said Xiao Qi, 15, Beijing. “And it’s eco-friendly because it saves paper.”
New generation e-readers have many functions (功能) besides reading, such as Wi-Fi and multimedia. However, some parents worry that these functions may have a bad influence on their children’s study habits. “I think Wi-Fi is not necessary for kids,” says Zeng Wenwen, 43, Beijing.

One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area. Paul knocked him down angrily. From then on, something happened inside him.
Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was “No”.
Paul then went to college to study the science of plants. Unfortunately, his teachers said since there weren’t any birds or squirrels(松鼠) to spread the seeds, it would be a waste of his life to try to do it. He was told everyone knew that even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn't get his idea accepted.
Paul later got married and had some kids. But his dream would not die. And then one night he did what he could with what he had. To bring trees back to the wasteland, he went secretly into the wasteland and started planting under the cover of darkness. A Wonderful Christmas Gift
Christmas was so close, and so was Ann’s birthday. She wished she could get a new dress with frills (荷叶边) and lace (蕾丝) as a wonderful Christmas gift. But Ann did not want to ask her mom for that. She knew how hard her mom worked to make a living. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus (圣诞老人) would come...
At school her classmates were talking only about Christmas celebrations. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty doll again,” said Ria.
“I have been hinting (暗示) about that costly watch to my parents,” told Tessie.
Ann felt out of these conversations. She had neither rich parents nor wealthy aunts to give her expensive gifts.
It was not just the gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Recently she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.
Soon it was Christmas Eve. In everyone’s house there was a decorated Christmas tree, but Ann’s house was cold and empty. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts. Ann went to bed, wishing that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamed of Santa riding in the snow...
The next morning Ann jumped up after hearing her alarm. Out of her expectation, there lay a beautiful packet tied with a red ribbon near her bed. Inside the package was a pretty white dress with fluffy frills and attractive lace!
Ann checked the gift carefully to find out who had given her this beautiful dress. Suddenly a small piece of paper fell out from the dress.
Dear Ann,This dress is gifted to you for being a good girl. Hope you continue to do good things and help your mother. Your Loving friend, Santa Claus

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often the whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains had been their favourite relatives. This was the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved by them.
I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly enjoy the long train journey and had brought along a dozen newspapers and magazines to read and reread.
It was not long before the train was rattling across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately, I came alive and decided to wave back.
From then on, my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I had been looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 p.m. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful.

Allen's First Marathon (马拉松)
One of Allen's ankles was injured one month before his first time to compete in a marathon. This meant he could not run or train for two weeks. Yet, Allen made up his mind to go ahead.
Allen remembers back to his first year in the school. He was only seven at that time. In his first P. E. class,
his teacher required them to run laps and then hit a ball. He didn't do either well. He was later told that he was "not athletic"—he had no talent in sports.
The idea that he was not athletic went with him for years. When he started running in his thirties, he realized running marathon was not about competition or whether he was physically strong and active. He thought that .
The night before his first marathon, he dreamed that he couldn't even find the finish line. He woke up sweating (冒汗) and nervous, but ready to prove something to himself.
Shortly after crossing the star line, his shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So Allen stopped to tie them. Not the start he wanted!
At mile 3, Allen passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, he became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. When he felt the pain, he tried to slow down and walked a bit and then ran again.
As Allen approached mile 25—near the finish line, he saw his wife waving a sign to encourage him. She is Allen's biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 5 a.m. or questioned his money on running.
Allen was one of the final runners to finish. But he finished! And he also got a medal. In fact, he got the same medal as the one that the man who got in first place.

一、任务型阅读
根据文章内容回答下列问题。

2.How fast can e-readers download an e-book

4.What are the uses of the special e-reader for students

When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near a copper smelter(炼铜厂). It made chemicals come out and made a beautiful forest become a wasteland.
And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass.
Slowly rabbits appeared. Later, as there was legal pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing. Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, and Paul has received almost every environmental award Utah has. It took him until his hair turned white to plant trees and grass, but he managed to keep that impossible vow(誓言)he made to himself as a child.

Kuakuaqun is social media chat groups that people pay a little money to join and are paid to show kindness, support and comfort to others in the group. The new chat groups have become popular with young people.
According to media reports, the first such online praise group was formed by a few users of Douban, one of the major online social networks, for fun. However, the idea has caught on and praise-seeking chat groups have become popular among college students across the country.
It was hard to understand Kuakuaqun at first. What kind of value do kinds words have if I am paying someone to say them Lin Yingying from Quanzhou described the groups as “a joke”, but also offered some insight (见解).
“We rarely hear nice things in real life,” Lin said, “maybe we are not good at telling people ... that we are not feeling well ...” She thinks it is easier for people to share their problems online.
Kuakuaqun doesn’t only exist in China. No matter where you come from, it is common to hear someone say, “You are not good enough.” There is a certain beauty in giving encouragement to others. Perhaps that is why so many young people have joined the groups.
A reporter from Russia Today wrote about a post in which someone admitted that they woke up at 2 p.m. one day. One user replied, “You must care about your health very much as you sleep for so long, praise you!” That praise sounds hollow, but the humor doesn’t. Maybe that is the real value. A good joke can brighten anybody’s day.
Experts have said that the popularity of Kuakuaqun reflects the users’ stressful, anxious and lonely mentalities (心态). It creates a positive and friendly environment for people that may help them get confidence

Half a year before graduating from college, my son Kevin began to seek a job and soon got an interview. There were only three people for the final interview including him. The interview was very simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interviewer said to them, “All of you are very good. Please go home and wait for our response.”

Recently she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.

lace!

Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and
they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang.
I looked forward to the return journey, by train.

E. class, his teacher required them to run laps and then hit a ball.
