教学重点 1. 掌握本部分出现的生词和词组,达到熟练运用的目标。 2. 能够用英语描述自己的情感。 3. 掌握make作使役动词的用法。

教学过程 Step 1: Leading in 1. Ask students to think about a question: What can make you happy 2. Students talk about this question in groups and one member can make a summary about their ideas and share in class. 3. Make a summary about this question by showing pictures and key words. Step 2: Preparation 1. Show students a picture of a king and ask them to answer the questions. (1)Who is the man (2)Do you think he is happy 2. Use more detailed questions like “What kind of man is he ” to lead students to describe the king with more words. Step 3: Reading 1. Ask students to skim the passage and divide the passage into four parts according to the related meaning. 2. Ask students to summarize the ideas of the four parts. (Attention: teach students some reading skills, e.g. use the key words or key sentences to make a summary. If students can’t summarize correctly, lead them to find out the key sentences. A mind map can also be used to show the main ideas of each part on the board.) 3. Ask students to scan Para. 1 & 2 and answer the following questions. (1)When did the story happen (2)Where did the story happen (3)What was wrong with the king (4)What did the doctor say 4. Ask students to scan Para. 3—5 and fill in the table. The prime ministerThe king’s bankerThe palace singerWhat do they have Are they happy Why are they unhappy What are they worried about
5. Ask students to read the story in groups and answer the questions. (1)Can medicine help the king Why or why not (2)Why does power not make the prime minister happy (3)Why does money not make the banker happy (4)Why does fame not make the singer happy (Attention: When students are sharing the questions, explain new words, phrases and sentence patterns in the passage. If necessary, explain some sentences which are difficult to understand. Guide students some reading strategies like: find the answers paragraph by paragraph.) 6. Ask students to finish exercise 3b to check their understanding to the new phrases. (Answers: 1. didn’t feel like eating 2. was called in 3. examine 4. losing ... power 5. take my position) Step 4: Role-play and discussion 1. Ask students to role-play the story in groups. 2. Ask students to think about the question again: What makes a happy person Step 5: Language points 1. feel like doing sth. feel like doing sth.意为“想做某事”。 I feel like having a drink. 我想喝点酒。 2. His face was always pale as chalk. (as) pale as chalk是一种明喻修辞结构,虽然英语把苍白比作chalk(白垩,一种白色石灰岩),但汉语不可真译,相当于我们说的“惨白;苍白”。值得注意的是,汉语描述不健康的人的面部颜色时常用“白”字,如“煞白;苍白;灰白”等等,英语常用pale来表达。 You look as pale as chalk today. What’s wrong 今天你看着面色苍白,哪里不舒服? He suddenly went pale. 他突然面色苍白。 3. call in call in意为“召来,叫来”。 He only waited two minutes before he was called in. 他只等了两分钟就被叫了进去。 call短语归纳: call back 唤回,叫回;回电话 call up (给……)打电话;想起,回忆起 call away 叫走,叫开 4. neither neither 表示“两者都不”;常用词组:neither...nor...“既不……也不……”,谓语动词跟最近的主语一致。 Neither he nor I am from Beijing. 他和我都不在北京。 辨析:both, either和neither ①neither表示“两者都不”,作主语时,谓语动词常用单数形式。 Neither of his parents is a doctor. 他的父母都不是医生。 ②both表示“两者都”,作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。 Both of his parents are doctors. 他的父母都是医生。 ③either表示“两者中的任何一个”,作主语时,谓语动词常用单数形式。 Either of his parents is a doctor. 他的父母中有一个是医生。 5. be worried about be worried about相当于worry about,意为“担心”。 We are all worried about my grandpa’s health. 我们总是担心我爷爷的健康。 6. take one’s position take one’s position意为“取代某人的位置”,同义词组是take one’s place。 He takes my position/place. 他取代了我的位置。 7. in+一段时间 “in+时间段”表示在一段时间后,用于将来时 I will be back in three days. 我三天之后回来。 Step 6: Grammar points make的使役用法 make作使役动词,意为“使;迫使”,其常用结构如下: 1. make + sb. + adj. 意为“使得某人……”。可用到的形容词有:happy,pleased,surprised,angry,annoyed,sad,upset,unhappy,worried,anxious,excited,relaxed,stressed out,tense,calm,scared,comfortable,sick等。 The news made him happy. 这个消息让他很开心。 2. make + sb. + do sth.意为“使得某人做某事”。(不能带不定式符号to) 。 Nothing will make me change my mind. 什么也改变不了我的想法。 注意:make sb. do sth.的被动结构是sb. be made to do sth.,意为“某人被迫做某事”。当make 用于被动语态时,必须带不定式符号to。 He was made to lie in bed all day. 他被迫每天躺在床上。 Step 7: Practice 1. Ask students to complete the diary using the appropriate words. (Answers: feel sad, anxious, upset, nervous, glad, happy) 2. Ask students to do a survey using the following questions. (1)What makes you happy (2)What makes you want to cry (3)What makes you uncomfortable (4)What makes you angry (5)What makes you nervous (6)What makes you feel like dancing 3. Let students share voluntarily, and give comments. When students are sharing, correct their sentences to the correct form. Step 8: Exercises 用make将下列句子翻译成英语。 1. 妈妈让她每天弹钢琴一小时。 ____________________________________________________________ 2. 这个故事让王飞很伤心。 ____________________________________________________________ 3. 我们被迫在宾馆待了三天。 ____________________________________________________________ (Answers: Mom makes her play the piano for an hour a day. This story makes / made Wang Fei sad. We were made to stay in the hotel for three days.)
