Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said:“I’ve waited a long time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. However, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina
At her present age, a grand plie—lowering to the floor with bent knees seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. “I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Ballet has been transformative. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163cm, half an inch taller than she had thought . She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling. “Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton.
4. How had Leverton been feeling about taking a ballet class
A. Confident B. Shy C. Bored D. Expectant
5. Why did Leverton fail to take a ballet class in her youth
A. The ballet class was unaffordable for her family.
B. Her parents prevented her from doing so.
C. Her family was busy immigrating to the UK.
D. She had to hold two cleaning jobs.
6. What did dancing bring to Leverton
A. A team award. B. Health and friendship.
C. Fame and wealth. D. A well-paid job.
7. What can be learned from Leverton’s story
A. Never too old to pursue dreams. B. Hard work pays off.
C. Interest is the path to success. D. Actions speak louder than words.

A team at a US university trained an AI tool to examine 60,000 fingerprints to see if it could work out which ones belonged to the same individual. The researchers claim the technology could identify, with 75-90% accuracy, whether prints from different fingers came from one person.
But they are not sure how it works. “We don’t know for sure how the AI does it,” admitted Prof Hod Lipson, a roboticist at Columbia University who led the study.
Graham Williams professor of forensic science (法医学) at Hull University, said the idea of unique fingerprints had never been set in stone. “We don’t actually know that fingerprints are unique,” he said. “All we can say is that as far as we are aware, no two people have yet to show the same fingerprints.”
The results of Columbia University’s study could have the potential to impact both biometrics and forensic science.
If, for example, an unidentified thumb (拇指) print is found at crime scene A, and an unidentified index (食指) fingerprint at crime (犯罪) scene B, the two could not currently be forensically connected to the same person—but the AI tool could be able to identify this.
The Columbia University study will be published in the journal Science Advances on Friday. But a pair of twins in Cheshire might be ahead of everyone. Their grandmother Carol told the BBC her two grandchildren can open each other’s iPhones using their own fingers.
“They showed me on Christmas day,” she said. “We were told they were identical when they were born but I can tell the difference between them as they’ve got older.”She claimed that her grandchildren can also bypass the handsets’ facial recognition feature.
Fingerprints are formed before birth. Research published last year suggested the genetic process behind them may be similar to the way animals like zebras and leopards get their markings.
8. According to the research, what can AI tools do
A. Identifying people’s fingerprints.
B. Contributing to crime prevention.
C. Helping lead scientific studies and experiments.
D. Training people to tell the difference of fingerprints.
9. What does the underlined word “identical” in paragraph 7 mean
A. Unique. B. Healthy. C. The same. D. Cute.
10. What can we learn from the research
A. All twins share the same fingerprints. B. People’s fingerprints may not be unique.
C. AI will replace humans in every way. D. Fingerprints will change as people grow older.
11. Why does the author mention zebras and leopards in the last paragraph
A. To make an appeal to people to protect animals.
B. To tell the difference between people and animals.
C. To explain the formation principle of fingerprints.
D. To show the similarity of genes between animals and people.

Flowers, candies, and hidden eggs are all traditions humans look forward to during Easter. But they can also ruin the day pretty quickly if your dog or cat happens to get into them.
Most pet owners know that chocolate can be very dangerous to cats and dogs. Calls to the Pet Poison Helpline rise sharply due to suspected chocolate ingestion around Easter. In fact, the calls concerning dogs that have been poisoned by chocolate increased by nearly 200% during the week of Easter. So it’s as vital as ever to keep Easter baskets and candy bunnies away from pets.
“A common flower that veterinarians (兽医) warn cat owners against is lilies. Even eating a small amount of this flower can cause deadly kidney failure in cats,” Certified veterinarian Amanda Takiguchi, DVM, said in a statement. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, lilies are the most common toxin (毒素) to cats, making up 12.3% of all calls to the hotline.
“Many species of lilies are toxic to cats, so it’s best to avoid lilies altogether. Owners need to be especially cautious around Easter when these flowers are more popular.”Amanda Takiguchi, DVM said.
Egg hunts are fun for everyone but could cause trouble for curious pets. Depending on the type of eggs you use, however, curious pets may get themselves hurt trying to partake in the fun.
Hard-boiled eggs are generally okay for cats and dogs, but the paint used to decorate the shells should not be consumed. If you use plastic eggs and hide treasures inside, it is especially important to ensure all of the eggs have been found by the end of your hunt so your pets don’t discover them later down the road. It’s also important to ensure they don’t have access to the eggs or the treats hidden inside during the hunt.
“Curious cats and dogs could put themselves in danger by chewing or even accidentally eating these decorations,” veterinarian Rebecca MacMillan told TrustedHousesitters. “Fragile egg-shaped baubles could easily shatter, and small fluffy toy chicks are just the right size to be swallowed. This is why you should always keep any decorations out of reach from your pets.”
12. Who is the passage intended for
A. Veterinarians. B. Pet trainers. C. Pet owners. D. Animal experts.
13. What will easily cause kidney failure in cats
A. Swallowing the Easter eggs. B. Eating a small amount of lily.
C. Playing with fluffy toy chicks. D. Consuming a certain amount of chocolates.
14. What will Rebecca MacMillan probably agree with
A. It’s common to feed dogs hard-boiled eggs.
B. It’s impossible to keep pets away from Easter eggs.
C. It’s better not to put up any decorations during Easter.
D. It’s unsafe to keep Easter decorations within pets’ easy reach.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title
A. Easter pet safety. B. An unsafe Easter.
C. Proper pet food. D. Furry family members.

Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK.
D 5. A 6. B 7. A

根据第一段“Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said:“I’ve waited a long time for it.” (蒂娜·莱弗顿在62岁时买了她的第一双芭蕾舞鞋。她说把脚放进柔软的皮革里非常激动。她说:“我等这一刻已经等了很久。”)”可知,她穿上芭蕾舞鞋时感到非常激动,这表明她对参加芭蕾舞课充满了期待。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. (不幸的是,她的父母无法负担芭蕾舞课的费用,因为他们是第一代印度移民,在英国努力维持生计)”可知,她年轻时未能参加芭蕾舞课的原因是家庭经济状况。故选A项。

She attributes(归因)the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped.Dancing has also brought new friends.

Graham Williams, professor of forensic science (法医学) at Hull University, said the idea of unique fingerprints had never been set in stone.
A 9. C 10. B 11. C

The researchers claim the technology could identify, with 75-90% accuracy, whether prints from different fingers came from one person.(美国一所大学的一个团队训练了一种人工智能工具来检查6万个指纹,看看它是否能找出哪些指纹属于同一个人。 故选A项。
根据第三段“Graham Williams, professor of forensic science (法医学) at Hull University, said the idea of unique fingerprints had never been set in stone. “We don’t actually know that fingerprints are unique,” he said. “All we can say is that as far as we are aware, no two people have yet to show the same fingerprints.”(赫尔大学的法医学教授格雷厄姆·威廉姆斯说,独一无二的指纹从来都不是一成不变的。“我们实际上并不知道指纹是独一无二的,”他说。“我们所能说的是,据我们所知,还没有两个人的指纹相同。”)”可知,研究表明独一无二的指纹从来都不是一成不变的,实际上并不知道指纹是独一无二的,因此人们的指纹可能不是唯一的。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Fingerprints are formed before birth. Research published last year suggested the genetic process behind them may be similar to the way animals like zebras and leopards get their markings.(指纹在出生前就形成了。去年发表的研究表明,它们背后的遗传过程可能与斑马和豹子等动物获得标记的方式相似)”可知,作者提到斑马和豹子是为了解释指纹的形成原理。故选C项。

C 13. B 14. D 15. A
