Some Christmas traditions are pretty standard in mainstream(主流)American culture: put up the tree, string up the lights, visit grandma, and so on.
Then there’s the one my Colombian family does every year: the Novena de Aguinaldos. We pray(祈祷)for nine days without a stop, and this Novena counts down the nine days before Christmas. Most Americans have never heard of it, but in Colombia, it’s a big deal.
Like all good traditions, especially around the holidays, this tradition is about community and getting together with friends and family. My family immigrated(移民)from Colombia when I was just two months old. Every year, we gather with a group of Colombian friends for as many of the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos——Spanish Christmas carols(颂歌)come.
I’ve lived my whole life in the US. There’s not a lot of Colombian culture that we still hang onto. Why do we still carry on with the tradition of celebrating the Novenas, then
When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere—not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Novenas were nothing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Colombia, the Novenas became the heart of our community.
But our Novenas are starting to feel a little more breakable. It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.
4. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The process of celebrating the Novena.
B. The development of a Colombian tradition.
C. The background of the Colombian family.
D. The differences between the Novena and Christmas.
5. Why does the Colombian family celebrate the Novena

C. To show their respect for Americans. D. To understand the local culture.
6. What makes celebrating the Novena difficult for the Colombian family
A. Lack of money. B. Their separate busy life.
C. American laws. D. Friends’ complaints.
7. What’s the best title for the text
A. Growing Up B. Colorful Culture
C. Exploring American Christmas Traditions D. Colombian Family’s Novena in the US
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. B 7. D

Doctors and nutritionists have been telling that one should not eat right before going to bed. However, one should also not eat late at night, according to a recent study. It has been said that when we eat late at night, we’re going against our body’s rhythm.
According to the researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, eating late at night increases the risk of obesity and weight gain. The analysis of the study revealed that the time when a person eats their last meal impacts the calories burned, appetite and how the body stores fat.
To conduct their study, a total of 16 participants with the body mass index (BMI) that is of the obese range or considered overweight were studied. Every one was given the same meals and they were divided into two groups: The first group was required to eat their meals early in the day and the other with each meal 250 minutes late.
The team of researchers found that eating late had a significant impact on the regulation of hunger hormones. The level of leptin (瘦蛋白) inhibits the human appetite. It was reduced across the period of 24 hours due to late eating. It was observed that eating late doubled the chance of being hungry. When participants ate later, they burned calories at a much slower rate.
In a press release the first author Nina Vujovic said, “In this study, we asked a simple question, ‘Does the time that we eat matter when everything else is kept consistent ’ and we found that eating four hours later makes a major difference to the hunger levels, the way calories burn after we eat, and the way our body stores fat.”
This study adds to a growing body of evidence showing just how important meal timing can be when it comes to body weight. Based on what this and other studies have shown, people who are watching their weight may want to get rid of the late night snacks and eat most of their meals earlier in the day.
12. What’s the difference between the two groups in paragraph 3
A. The variety of the diet. B. The fat content in their meals.
C. The calories in their meals. D. Their eating schedules.
13. What can we do to beat obesity according to the study
A. Avoid eating late at night.
B. Keep a moderate sense of hunger.
C Abandon consuming food low in fat.
D. Make sure to have supper at a set time.
14. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The human appetite. B. The leptin level.
C. The body mass index. D. The chance of being hungry.
15. From which is the text probably taken
A. A health magazine. B. A biology textbook.
C. A travel brochure. D. A biography.

When I was elected the president of Students’ Union, everybody congratulated me, saying it was one of the best the school had been. And my first task in my political career was to raise money to build a coffeehouse on the campus. I was excited about it.
Having determined my goal, I set up a small group of helpers to do fundraising. One of them was Gary.
He was super active and energetic. You could easily pick him out during the lunch break for he was always enjoying himself by throwing Frisbees (飞盘) to someone just passing by. But meanwhile, he was extremely clever and eloquent (雄辩的). As the leader of the Debating Club, he never had any losses. When I politely asked him to join the fundraising group, he raised his eyebrows. Obviously, he didn’t expect I would invite someone so playful as him. At my insistence, he finally agreed.
Clearly, I was right. Gary persuaded dozens of students into donating. He helped me organize our group meetings. When the team members met difficulties and lost heart on the edge of giving up, he made the best of his humor to cheer everyone up. Gradually, all of us felt like we were part of something much bigger than we were.
However, I didn’t know when my ego (自我) took over and destroyed everything. My arrogance (傲慢) and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to my group members, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. I believe that I could complete this task without any of them and I wanted to take credit for everything (把功劳归自己). Gary tried to remind me that I was abusing (滥用) my position, but I wasn’t listening.

Next comes the gozos which means “The Joys”.
A. To remember their dead friends. B. To find a sense of belonging.
C. To show their respect for Americans. D. To understand the local culture.
6. What makes celebrating the Novena difficult for the Colombian family
A. Lack of money. B. Their separate busy life.
C. American laws. D. Friends’ complaints.
7. What’s the best title for the text
A. Growing Up B. Colorful Culture
C. Exploring American Christmas Traditions D. Colombian Family’s Novena in the US

We all have an idea about the common types of environmental problems. However, light pollution may be a new term to many of us. But, the fact is that it does affect mankind, other living forms and the environment as a whole.
What is light pollution It presents all forms of misused man-made light. The obvious cause of light pollution is the use of outdoor lighting products improperly. It can be office lighting, car headlights, station lights, streetlights and many more.
Light pollution is harmful to both animals and plants. Upon studies, it is found that obvious effects are observed in the behaviour of animals that are active at night.

A. The variety of the diet. B. The fat content in their meals.
C. The calories in their meals. D. Their eating schedules.
13. What can we do to beat obesity according to the study
A. Avoid eating late at night.
B. Keep a moderate sense of hunger.
C. Abandon consuming food low in fat.
D. Make sure to have supper at a set time.
14. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The human appetite. B. The leptin level.
C. The body mass index. D. The chance of being hungry.
15 From which is the text probably taken
