A small accident led to profound changes in the life of Yang Li, an artisan (手艺人), who is from the Miao ethnic group. In 201l, Yang, from Tongren city in Guizhou province, created leaf vein (脉络) embroidery (刺绣) three months after a leaf cut her hand.
The work is a perfect combination of traditional embroidery patterns and the natural textures (纹理) of the leaves. It has a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery matched with the characteristics of contemporary craftsmanship.
As a native Miao woman with an inborn love of embroidery, Yang opened a folk culture products shop with her sister in 2011. “People are becoming less familiar with traditional handicrafts, and I want to contribute all I can to change this situation,” Yang says. At first, the small shop did not earn a significant income as there were many similar products on the market. She gradually realized that it was important to establish her own brand and launch products with distinct features.
That’s when she was inspired by the cut. In July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf when she was hiking in Fanjing Mountain. A bold idea came into her head: “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroider yet ”
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. The biggest technical challenge Yang faced was improving the flexibility of the leaves and making them as soft as cloth. On Oct 16, a day she will never forget, Yang finally created a shiny, thin and unbreakable piece of leaf vein. Her idea of leaf-vein embroidery came to completion after hundreds of experiments.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities. “I will keep doing the leaf vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful,” she says.
24. What do we know about Yang Li’s folk culture products shop
A. It was inspired by a cut by a leaf in her hand.
B. It was a failure before she began to sell similar products.
C. It was intended to preserve traditional Chinese handicrafts.
D. It perfectly combined traditional Chinese books and drawings.
25. What is Yang Li’s difficulty in making her leaf-vein embroidery
A. Finding cloth with vein-like texture.
B. Creating a new embroidery pattern.
C. Changing leaves into unbreakable cloth.
D. Softening up leaves for better flexibility.
26. Which of the following best describes Yang Li
A. Ambitious and innovative. B. Caring and patient.
C. Persistent and demanding. D. Humorous and optimistic.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. An embroidery skill. B. A promising career.
C. A cultural shop. D. An admirable artisan.
C 25. D 26. A 27. D

Ever been hungry enough to eat a house Now, you actually could.
Food waste is a big problem in Japan and globally. Japan produced around 5.7 million tons of food waste in 2019. The government plans to reduce that by around 2.7 million tons by 2030. Tokyo University researchers Kota Machida and Yuya Sakai have developed a way to transform food waste into cement (水泥) for construction use and more. This is the first-ever process created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This particular cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature — it’s also eatable.
Kota and Yuya are the intelligence behind the formation of Fabula Inc., a company with purposes of reducing food waste, and helping fight global warming. As expected, something this unique took years to develop. It took a few attempts to find just the right process. Kota and Yuya created the unique technology while researching possible environment-friendly materials to replace cement-based concrete. Cement production accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide release.
After a few failures, they realized they could get the cement to bind (黏合) by adjusting the temperatures. “The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures,” Yuya said. So the researchers had to observe them and respond in time. In the experiments, Kota and Yuya have successfully made cement using tea leaves, coffee grounds, cabbage and even lunchbox leftovers.
Fabula Inc. is currently working to make tea cups and furniture, but Yuya is thinking a little bit bigger. Their product could provide relief in the form of eatable emergency shelters in disaster ones. “For example, if food cannot be delivered to the people, they could eat makeshift beds made out of food cement,” he said. To eat the material, a person needs to break it apart and boil it.
28. What’s mainly talked about in paragraph 1 and 2
A. The functions of this particular cement.
B. The effects of food waste in the whole world.
C. The characteristics of the newly made cement.
D. The process of transforming food waste to cement.
29. Which is one of Kota and Yuya’s purposes in making use of food waste
A. To handle global climate change.
B. To extend concrete’s service life.
C. To offer Fabula Inc. more cement.
D. To warn how serious food waste is.
30. What made the experiment of making cement out of food waste harder
A. Making sure to make cement tasty.
B. Selecting correct food waste timely.
C. Getting cement broken apart easily.
D. Adjusting the temperatures constantly.
31. What does the underlined word “makeshift” in the last paragraph mean
A. bendable. B. commercial. C. recyclable. D. temporary.
C 29. A 30. D 31. D

根据第二段中“This is the first-ever process created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This particular cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature — it’s also eatable. (这是第一个完全从食物垃圾中制造水泥的过程。研究人员表示,他们的产品的强度是传统混凝土的四倍。这种特殊的水泥也可以用来制作茶杯或椅子之类的东西。然而,它还有一个额外的特点——它也是可以吃的。)”可知,这两段主要讨论了新制水泥的特点。故选C项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Kota and Yuya are the intelligence behind the formation of Fabula Inc., a company with purposes of reducing food waste, and helping fight global warming. (Kota和Yuya是Fabula公司成立背后的智慧,这家公司的宗旨是减少食物浪费,帮助对抗全球变暖。)”可知,Kota和Yuya利用食物垃圾是为了应对全球气候变化。故选A项。
根据第四段中“The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures. (最具挑战性的部分是每种食物垃圾需要不同的温度。)”可知,需要不断调节温度让从食物垃圾中制造水泥的实验变得更加困难。故选D项。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句前文“Their product could provide relief in the form of eatable emergency shelters in disaster ones. (他们的产品可以在灾难中以可食用的紧急避难所的形式提供救济。)”说明他们的产品可以用作临时紧急避难所,从而推知划线词句“For example, if food cannot be delivered to the people, they could eat makeshift beds made out of food cement. (例如,如果食物不能送到人们手中,他们可以吃用食品水泥做成的makeshift床。)”其中划线词汇意思为“临时的,暂时的”,即:如果赈灾食品不能及时到位,被困人员可以吃食品水泥做成的临时床救急,故选D项。

Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking “stupid” questions, especially the ones that have no right answers. I remember once asking some kids what time it was, at home, in Singapore, and finally on the Moon. After a long giggling silence, finally a shy girl ventured (试探地说) to say that it was “every time” followed by an energetic Einstein who shouted it was “no time”. Both kids shared that week’s Noble Prize, because no humans live in that distant world and time is a human construct.
As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get accustomed to the world around us and take things for granted. We became more results-oriented (注重结果的) and concentrate our efforts on success. If something is working, don’t fix it or worry about the cause; just relax and go with the flow. Conventional wisdom may work well, but that does not mean it is always right. Throughout history, it has been those who have questioned conventional wisdom and those who have challenged our common-sense notions of the world that have been the ones to have ushered in (开) the major advancements of human civilization.
In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the “crazy” concept of heliocentrism (日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth revolves (旋转) around it at 30 kilometers per second. But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet The answer to this question would not end up being revealed to us for another century.
People like routine, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. While those who challenge conventional wisdom tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their “stupid”questions.
32. What is the best title of this article
A. Asking “stupid” questions.
B. Is conventional wisdom useless
C. Some major advancements of human civilization
D. What caused them to ask conventional questions
33. What commonly happens to us when we grow older according to the author
A. We lay too much emphasis on process.
B. We still refuse to relax and go with the flow.
C. We start to challenge common-sense notions of the world
D. We gradually lose the ability to question conventional wisdom.
34. Who might have solved the question “why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet ”
A. An ancient Greek scientist living in 500 BC
B. Galileo Galilei living between 1564 and 1642.
C. Isaac Newton living between 1643 and 1727.
D. Albert Einstein living between 1879 and 1955.
35. How does the author develop his writing on the whole
A. By comparison and contrast.
B. By using supporting examples.
C. By using time and space order.
D. By generalization and definition
A 33. D 34. C 35. B

通读全文,并结合第一段中“Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking ‘stupid’ questions, especially the ones that have no right answers.(就我个人而言,没有什么比问“愚蠢”的问题更让我喜欢的了,尤其是那些没有正确答案的问题。)”和最后一段中“While those who challenge conventional wisdom tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their ‘stupid’ questions.(虽然那些挑战传统智慧的人往往会受到指责,但如果没有这些坚持不懈的人和他们提出的“愚蠢”问题,人类的进步就不可能实现。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中“As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get accustomed to the world around us and take things for granted.(事实上,我们天生都善于提问,但可悲的是,随着年龄的增长,我们已经习惯了周围的世界,认为一切都是理所当然的。)”
根据第三段中“In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the ‘crazy’ concept of heliocentrism (日心说),in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth revolves (旋转) around it at 30 kilometers per second.(公元前500年,古希腊人想知道地球是否是圆的,因为海上的水手们注意到,他们越往南走,他们在天空中看到的不同的星星就越多。为什么天空在变化 近2000年后,意大利天文学家伽利略·伽利莱对这个问题产生了兴趣,并最终证明了日心说的“疯狂”概念,即太阳位于宇宙的中心,而地球以每秒30公里的速度围绕它旋转。)”可知,伽利略在公元1500年左右提出“日心说”,结合“But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet The answer to this question would not end up being revealed to us for another century.(但如果地球旋转得这么快,为什么我们没有被甩出地球表面呢 这个问题的答案直到一个世纪后才揭晓。)”
作者在第二段“Throughout history, it has been those who have questioned conventional wisdom and those who have challenged our common-sense notions of the world that have been the ones to have ushered in (开) the major advancements of human civilization.(纵观历史,正是那些质疑传统智慧和挑战我们对世界的常识性观念的人,引领了人类文明的重大进步。)”
Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty This saying is often used to test people’s outlook in a situation; do they focus on the positives (a half-full glass) or the negatives (a half-empty one) Thinking positively, with a belief that most things will turn out fine, is called optimism and it’s known to boost your well-being. ___36___
Why is thinking positively good for you
Research shows that people who are optimistic and think positively tend to experience less stress and cope well when faced with life’s challenges. People who are more pessimistic (expect that the worst will happen) may find it hard to believe that these challenges will pass. Scientists have even found that thinking positively can make you live longer. ___37___ This is because you believe your goals are achievable and within reach, which encourages you to work towards them.
___38___
Everybody can worry from time to time. Worrying can help to keep you safe. If you were never worried and were greatly positive about how things would turnout, you wouldn’t recognize risks. “Worrying is our brain warning us that there might be something threatening, which functions as a fire alarm.” says child psychotherapist (心理治疗师) Rachel. “The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn’t a huge danger to face.” ___39___
You should learn to think positively.
Optimism is shaped by your genes, which carry characteristics obtained from your parents, and by what happens to you. ___40___ Research has shown that it can help to draw or write an outcome that’s positive, like an image of you playing guitar and having passed your next grade. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it, such as practising everyday afterschool.
A. Worrying is like a fire alarm.
B. Avoid worrying is beneficial to our health.
C. Asking others for help positively makes sense.
D. The good news is that everybody can learn to think more positively.
E. When this happens, you can feel anxious and hopeless about what lies ahead.
F. However, whatever your starting point is, you can learn to be more optimistic.
G. Being positive about the future goals can make you happier and more successful.
D 37. G 38. A 39. E 40. F

由上文“Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty This saying is often used to test people’s outlook in a situation; do they focus on the positives (a half-full glass) or the negatives (a half-empty one) (你那杯牛奶是半满还是半空?这句话经常被用来测试人们在某种情况下的看法;他们关注的是积极的一面(半满的杯子)还是消极的一面(半空的杯子)?)”和下文第三个小标题“You should learn to think positively. (你应该学会积极思考)”可知,文章开头通过人们对瓶子里的牛奶一半是空的还是一半是满的看法引出了积极思考和消极思考的话题,从而提出了每个人都能学习积极思考的观点,承接上下文,D选项“好消息是,每个人都可以学会更积极地思考。”切题。故选D项。
【37题详解】
由小标题“Why is thinking positively good for you (为什么积极思考对你有好处?)”可知本段主要分析了具体原因,下文“This is because you believe your goals are achievable and within reach, which encourages you to work towards them. (这是因为你相信你的目标是可以实现的,并且触手可及,这鼓励你朝着这些目标努力)”和该空是因果关系,承接上下文,G选项“对未来的目标持积极态度可以让你更快乐、更成功。”切题。故选G项。
【38题详解】
该空选取小标题,需总结下文。由下文“Everybody can worry from time to time. (每个人都会时不时地担心。担心有助于保护你的安全。如果你从不担心,并且对投票结果非常乐观,你就不会意识到风险。儿童心理治疗师Rachel说:“担心是我们的大脑警告我们可能有什么威胁,它起到了火警的作用。”)”可知,下段内容主要讨论的是担忧就像一个报警器,提醒我们一些危险事情可能发生,承接下文,A选项“担心就像火警。”切题,B项是建议避免担忧不符合文意。故选A项。
由小标题“Worrying is like a fire alarm. (担心就像火警)”和上文“The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn’t a huge danger to face. (问题是,有时在没有巨大危险的情况下,担心(火警)会消失)”可知,作为报警器最大的麻烦是当没有危险发生的时候,它不会发出警报,该空讲这种情况发生的后果,承接上文,E选项“当这种情况发生时,你可能会对未来感到焦虑和绝望。”切题,选项中“When this happens”指的是上文“sometimes it goes off”。故选E项。
由小标题“You should learn to think positively. (你应该学会积极思考)”可知最后一段是关于建议学习积极思考,上文“Optimism is shaped by your genes, which carry characteristics obtained from your parents, and by what happens to you. (乐观主义是由你的基因和你身上发生的事情塑造的,这些基因携带着从父母那里获得的特征)”和下文“Research has shown that it can help to draw or write an outcome that’s positive, like an image of you playing guitar and having passed your next grade. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it, such as practising everyday afterschool.

Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing Where’s your stuff ” Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willows. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.
To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.
“You’ve got to see this. ” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.

A surge of guilt swept over him, “How could I have that evil thought!” So the moment Mr. Willow went back to his house, Jack put the money back. The boys finished cleaning and went to the house. They had big slices of chocolate cake and two glasses of milk each.
When they were about to leave, Mr. Willow handed Jack a brand new bat and glove. “This is for you. Your mom said this is something you’d like. We try to find little ways to show our appreciation for what you have done for us.” Seeing the bat and glove, Jack felt a warm blush rise to his cheeks. “Th… thanks so much.
The work is a perfect combination of traditional embroidery patterns and the natural textures (纹理) of the leaves It has a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery matched with the characteristics of contemporary craftsmanship.
Two years later Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities. “I will keep doing the leaf vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful,” she says.

D What caused them to ask conventional questions

You should learn to think positively.

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.
Frey frowned and shook his head, “Are you crazy That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in I go’s Sports Stores.” With this, Jack put the rest money back.
Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice “Hello, e in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you.” Mr. Willow walked into the garage.
