Most teenagers are still trying to find their passion and purpose in life. However, not Gitanjali Rao. The 15-year-old girl at STEM School Highlands Ranch has been coming up with innovative solutions to worldwide problems since she was ten. It is, therefore, not surprising that the youngster was selected from 5, 000 equally impressive nominees (被提名者) — aged 8 to 16 — for TIME Magazine’s first-ever “Kid of the Year.”
The young girl, who knew she wanted to bring change and positivity to her community since third grade, was just ten years old when she heard about the lead-tainted (含铅的) water in Flint, Michigan, in 2015. After spending two months researching how the area’s drinking water became polluted, Rao began designing a device called Tethys, which attaches to a cellphone and informs the resident via an APP if their drinking water contains traces of the noxious metal. The prototype (模型) earned her the Young Scientist Challenge Award in 2017. A start-up businessman is-working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys’ potential and hopes the device will be ready for commercial use.
In 2019, Rao took on another social issue drug abuse. The apps he designed won the Pillar Prize at the Innovation Student Challenge, which helps to catch drug addiction in young adults before it’s too late. Rao said. “I wanted to come up with a way to diagnose such addiction at a nearly stage so you can take action earlier.”
More recently, the teenager has created another inspiring app. “I started to label some words that could be considered bullying, and then the computer search engine took those words and identified words that are similar. You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able topic kit up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is.” Rao told editor Angelina in an interview. “The goal is not to punish. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.”
4. What led to Gitanjali Rao’s being selected as “Kid of the Year”
A She has passion for STEM courses.
B. She is the founder of a popular magazine.
C. She addressed world problems creatively.
D. She beat 5, 000 candidates to enter a school.
5. What does the underlined word “noxious” mean in paragraph 2
A. Precious. B. Harmful. C. Rare. D. Polluted.
6. What is the goal of the app against cyber bullying
A. To give a punishment for bullying. B. To guide users to send proper words.
C. To withdraw bullying messages. D. To help find more accurate expressions.
7. Which of the following can best describe Gitanjali Rao
A. Responsible and productive. B. Generous and aggressive.
C. Emotional and cautious. D. Flexible and dynamic.
C 5. B 6. B 7. A

In the film Finding Nemo, the character Dory attempts to speak “whale”. Now a team of scientists say they could be one step closer to doing that. They used computer technology to analyze whale sounds and think they have translated their first whale word.
Sperm whales (抹香鲸) don’t speak a “language” in the same way as humans do, but they communicate by using a series of clicks. Scientists from Project CETI, an organization dedicated to translating sperm whale language, have spent years listening to the creatures. They have placed microphones on whales and planted underwater microphones off the coast of the Caribbean Island of Dominica to record the animals’ conversations.
Now the team is using artificial intelligence to find patterns in the whales’ sounds. The scientists have been trying to match the sound patterns with the whales’ behavior to see if certain “words” match certain actions .This could reveal the meaning of each individual sound or set of sounds.
So far, the scientists think they understand the signal for “dive”. They have also mapped out a kind of sperm whale phonetic signal (phonetic means turning sounds into symbols). However, like Dory, they have a long way to go before they can truly speak “whale”. Unlocking the language of sperm whales could help to protect them. Whales are an important part of marine (海洋) ecosystems all over the world. Their bodies also store large amounts of carbon, which helps to reduce pollution in the atmosphere. If humans spoke “whale”, it could be possible to warn them away from dangerous objects and areas, such as fishing nets they can become trapped in or shallow shorelines where they can get stuck.
8. How do sperm whales interact with each other
A. By making sounds. B. By using microphones.
C. By tail movements. D. By eye contact.
9. What does the artificial intelligence technique aim to find out about the whales
A. How they identify each other.
B. How they understand sound signal.
C. What language pattern they have in common.
D. What specific sound mode they use to communicate.
10. What could be a possible benefit of speaking “whale”
A. To imitate the sounds made by whales. B. To understand the behavior of fishers.
C. To tell whales about potential danger. D. To reduce pollution in the atmosphere.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the project
A. Unclear. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段“Sperm whales (抹香鲸) don’t speak a “language” in the same way as humans do, but they communicate by using a series of clicks.(抹香鲸不像人类那样说“语言”,但它们通过一系列的短而尖的声音来交流)”可知,抹香鲸通过发出声音相互影响。故选A。
根据第三段“Now the team is using artificial intelligence to find patterns in the whales’ sounds. The scientists have been trying to match the sound patterns with the whales’ behavior to see if certain “words” match certain actions .This could reveal the meaning of each individual sound or set of sounds.(现在,该团队正在使用人工智能来寻找鲸鱼声音中的模式。科学家们一直试图将声音模式与鲸鱼的行为相匹配,看看某些“单词”是否与某些行为相匹配,这可能会揭示每个声音或一组声音的含义)”可知,人工智能技术的目的是发现鲸鱼的用什么特定的声音模式来交流。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If humans spoke “whale”, it could be possible to warn them away from dangerous objects and areas, such as fishing nets they can become trapped in or shallow shorelines where they can get stuck.(如果人类会说“鲸鱼语”,就有可能警告它们远离危险的物体和区域,比如它们可能被困在渔网里,或者它们可能被困在浅滩上)”可知,说“鲸鱼语”可以告诉鲸鱼潜在的危险。
根据最后一段“Unlocking the language of sperm whales could help to protect them. Whales are an important part of marine (海洋) ecosystems all over the world. Their bodies also store large amounts of carbon, which helps to reduce pollution in the atmosphere. If humans spoke “whale”, it could be possible to warn them away from dangerous objects and areas, such as fishing nets they can become trapped in or shallow shorelines where they can get stuck.(解开抹香鲸的语言有助于保护它们。鲸鱼是全球海洋生态系统的重要组成部分。它们的身体也储存了大量的碳,这有助于减少大气中的污染。如果人类会说“鲸鱼”,就有可能警告它们远离危险的物体和区域,比如它们可能被困在渔网里,或者它们可能被困在浅滩上)”可知,作者对这个项目的态度是充满希望的。故选B。

When someone damages their backbone, the injury can leave them paralyzed (瘫痪). Now, scientists have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again, thanks to an implanted device.
The human backbone, or spine, doesn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside is the spinal cord, which carries important information between the head and the lower part of the body. This information moves around as bursts of electricity traveling between the brain and the other parts of the body. When the spinal cord is hurt, this pathway gets damaged and they can’t move their legs.
Now scientists in Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. To help them walk again, the men had surgery. A special device was placed directly on the lower part of their spinal cord, below their injury. This “implant” contained sixteen electrodes, which are small objects that electricity can pass through. The researchers made sure the electrodes were lined up with nerves that control the leg muscles. The scientists controlled the implants from a tablet computer.
The patient’s brains aren’t sending “walking” messages to their legs. Instead, the tablet tells the implant to send the walking messages. The researchers used computers to generate patterns of movement, like taking a step. The patient then uses the tablet to choose the pattern and the muscles move in the chosen way. Over time, the men were able to walk using a special walker with buttons to control each leg.
The solution isn’t perfect. It’s very expensive, it requires difficult surgery, and the patients can’t walk without the system. But the scientists are hopeful that in the future, this sort of technology will allow many paralyzed people to begin to walk again in just hours.
12. What's the main function of the spinal cord
A. It serves as a message carrier. B. It helps people stand up straight.
C. It takes control of the muscles. D. It produces signals for movements.
13. What is the implanted device expected to do
A. Activate the damaged nerves. B. Identify the position of the injury.
C. Test the degree of the damage. D. Bridge the nerve gap made by the injury.
14. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the surgery is performed. B. How the device works on patients.
C. How the patients walk without aid. D. How movement patterns are designed.
15. Which can be the best title of the text
A. Damaged nerves recover after surgery.
B. Tablets are used in a medical treatment.
C. Implant helps the paralyzed walk again.
D. Scientists made a discovery on backbones.
A 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第二段“Inside is the spinal cord, which carries important information between the head and the lower part of the body. This information moves around as bursts of electricity traveling between the brain and the other parts of the body. When the spinal cord is hurt, this pathway gets damaged and they can’t move their legs.(里面是脊髓,它在头部和身体下部之间传递重要信息。这些信息作为电流在大脑和身体其他部位之间传播。当脊髓受伤时,这条通路就会受损,他们的腿就不能动了。)”以及第三段“The researchers made sure the electrodes were lined up with nerves that control the leg muscles. The scientists controlled the implants from a tablet computer.(研究人员确保电极与控制腿部肌肉的神经对齐。科学家们通过平板电脑控制植入物。)”可知,脊髓受伤时,神经流受损导致他们的腿不能动,所以科学家植入特殊装置的预期用途是弥合受伤造成的神经间隙。故选D项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Instead, the tablet tells the implant to send the walking messages. The researchers used computers to generate patterns of movement, like taking a step. The patient then uses the tablet to choose the pattern and the muscles move in the chosen way.(相反,平板电脑让植入物发送行走信息。研究人员使用计算机生成运动模式,比如迈出一步。然后,患者使用平板电脑选择模式,肌肉以选定的方式运动。)”可知,本段主要介绍了该设备如何在患者身上工作。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Now, scientists have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again, thanks to an implanted device.(现在,由于植入了一种设备,科学家们已经让三名瘫痪男子恢复了行走的能力。)”以及最后一段“But the scientists are hopeful that in the future, this sort of technology will allow many paralyzed people to begin to walk again in just hours.(但科学家们希望,在未来,这种技术将允许许多瘫痪的人在短短几个小时内重新开始行走。)”

I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree. Before receiving the degree, the last Sociology (社会学) class left me a deep impression.
The teacher of the class was absolutely inspiring with great qualities. Her last project of the term was called “Smile.” The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally.
Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to a fast food restaurant one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch—a strong feeling of panic welled up inside me as I turned to see why they had moved.
As I turned around I smelled a horrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was “smiling” His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of light a she searched for acceptance. He said, “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been holding tightly. The second man fumbled (摸索) with his hands a she stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his caregiver.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “coffee is all, Miss,” because that was all they could afford. If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm. Then I really felt it-the urge was so great that I almost couldn’t contain my tears.
I smiled and asked the young lady to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray (托盘).

I smiled and asked the young lady to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I told her to place them on the tab, and I walked over to the gentlemen’s table. As I placed the tray in front of them, I told them they were from a friend. The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you.” I just smiled and walked away. I felt my heart was filled with warmth and joy. The two men seemed so grateful and happy for the small gesture of kindness. I realized that sometimes, it’s the smallest things that can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I shared my experience with the class and the teacher. The teacher nodded and said, “That’s what this project is all about. It’s not just about smiling at people, but about making a difference in their lives with a simple act of kindness.” The class was silent for a moment, and then someone clapped, and soon the whole class joined in. I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as I realized that I had not just completed a project, but had also made a real impact on someone’s life. That night, I knew that my college degree was not just a piece of paper; it was a testament to my growth and ability to make a difference in the world.

4. What led to Gitanjali Rao’s being selected as “Kid of the Year”
A. She has passion for STEM courses.
B She is the founder of a popular magazine.
C. She addressed world problems creatively.
D. She beat 5, 000 candidates to enter a school.
5. What does the underlined word “noxious” mean in paragraph 2
