THIS STREET IS OPEN FOR PLAY
Concerned about outdoor play in crowded cities Start a play street — a community event where neighbors close their road to traffic, creating a safe space for children to play. This initiative allows kids and adults to explore, create and socialize, which, undoubtedly, will bring the bonds between neighbors to a new height.
Compared to structured plays with strict rules and fixed procedures, a play street allows children to lead, establish rules and get involved in an open-ended activity without specific instructions, methods or goals.
Getting Started:
1. Host a meeting to discuss benefits and encourage involvement. Choose an event date, and assign tasks to the neighbors.
2. Reach out to city councils for necessary permits to close the road. Ignoring this will lead to the cancellation of the whole plan.
3. Use posters, flyers, and social media to spread the word. Use these promotion means to inform residents of the date, time and activities planned for the play street.
4. Set up barriers for safety, provide equipment and encourage neighbors” participation.
What to Expect:
● Game Areas: A variety of play equipment tailored for kids, such as jump ropes, balls, chalk for drawing, hula hoops and other outdoor games.
● Swapping Corner: A place where moms can bring unwanted items such as kitchenware, gardening tools or other household goods to exchange with each other.
● Arts and Crafts Seating: Arts and crafts seating with materials like paper, markers, crayons, paints and brushes. Children are encouraged to get creative and express themselves through art.
● Snack and Refreshment Station: Light refreshments like water, juice, fruit and healthy snacks to keep mixed-age participants energized. A potluck to share homemade treats and recipes.

C. Posting the safety regulations. D. Asking for authorities’ approval.

“Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now!” The silver-haired driver behind me in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me. Without much thought, I yelled back at the: man, “What Are you in a rush or something ”
I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning. There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me. There were also three additional cars in front of that one. We were getting nowhere fast. What was he hoping to gain by yelling at me
I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two kids. My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from school and work. Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this man let his anger out.
I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn’t keep yelling at this guy. Then. I stopped and looked back. I had moved up the 12 or so inches at his “suggestion”, while he hadn’t moved an inch. Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him. He must have been suffering in some way. As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pick-up window to pay for our order, I had an idea.
“I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to put up with that. He isn’t worth paying for,” the cashier said to me. “My kids support me in doing that,” I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate.

A. She taught her kids a lesson. B. She apologized to the driver.
C. She paid for the driver’s food. D. She gave the cashier some advice.

A. Respond to hate with kindness.
B. Deal with a man as he deals with you.
C. Put distance between your car and another.
D. Never go to the drive-through at rush hours.

Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment (碎片) of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
“It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes.
Each new Olympic medal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron — though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal ’”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin.
The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure.
The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made.
28. What does Thierry mean by saying “bring back a piece of Paris”
A. The athletes will buy souvenirs about Paris.
B. The athletes will take many photos of Paris.
C. Part of the athletes’ medal is from the symbol of Paris.
D. The Eiffel Tower will be left in the athletes’ memory.
29. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. The symbolic meaning of the hexagons.
B. The shape and material of the Olympic medal.
C. The processing technique of the Eiffel Tower iron pieces.
D. The design of the Eiffel Tower iron fragment on the medal.
30. How did the designers get the idea of adding the waste iron
A. From a strange dream. B. By asking for the public.
C. Through their discussion. D. By studying the Eiffel Tower.
31. What can we infer about the new Olympic medals
A. They are innovative. B. They are light.
C. They have six sides. D. They are golden-colored.
D
Deepfake: synthetic (合成的) media, including images, videos, and audio, is generated by Al technology to show something that does not exist or events that have never occurred.
Examples of deepfakes have been widely spread, including a video of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg giving a speech about his company’s plan, and a video of Elon Musk dancing and talking about the power of dreams, etc.
It’s easy for AI to produce such deepfakes using two different deep-learning algorithms (算法): one that creates the best possible clone based on a real image or video and another that detects whether the copy is fake (伪造的) and, if it is reports on the differences between it and the original. The first algorithm produces a synthetic image and receives feedback on it from the second algorithm and then adjusts it to make it appear more real; the loop is repeated as many times as it takes until the second algorithm does not detect any false imagery.
Deepfakers often have evil motives, including creating misinformation and generating confusion. They tend to demean, terrify, and annoy, and have targeted not only celebrities but ordinary citizens as well.
Most of the academic research surrounding deepfakes focuses on the detection of huge amount of deepfake videos emerging online. One detection approach is to use algorithms to identify inconsistencies in deepfake videos. For example, an automatic system can examine videos for errors such as irregular blinking patterns of lighting. However, these approaches have been criticized because deepfake detection is characterized by a “moving goal post” where the production of deepfakes is changing and improving while detection tools are always on the way of catching them up.
However, education and medicine are two of the fields that may benefit from deepfake technology. In the classroom, historical speeches could be deepfaked to offer immersive and engaging lessons. In health care, it can improve the accuracy with which tumors (肿瘤) are spotted, making them easier to treat. Its use also permits using synthesized data instead of that from real patients to avoid privacy concerns.
32. How does AI create a deepfake video according to the passage
A. By copying and combining the fake images.
B. By constantly teaching itself to perfect the output.
C. By acquiring feedback from multiple sources.
D. By repeatedly generating realistic images from scratch.
33. What is the challenge of detecting deepfake videos
A. Ever-evolving deepfake techniques.
B. Insufficient academic basis on detection solutions.
C. A massive number of false videos online.
D. Limited availability of detection tools.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward deepfake
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.
35. What is probably the best title for the passage
A. Potential threats: AI’s new playground
B. Deepfake: Human’s another helping hand
C. Artificial Intelligence: A piece of fake
D. Detecting deepfake: An ongoing battle

Pillows have been used in China for thousands of years and hold a significant place in Chinese culture. In modern times, we enjoy a wide range of pillows 56 (fill) with synthetic fibers, down, or feathers. However, it is interesting to explore 57 ancient Chinese people used as pillows.
58 (base) on historical records, the development of pillows in China can be learned from various materials. Pillows used to be categorized into hard and soft types, 59 stone and wooden pillows appearing earliest in history.
The origins of pillows can be traced back to the middle Paleolithic period. During that time, people 60 (unknowing) used objects like stones, sticks, or pieces of animal skin as head support, 61 (serve) as the earliest prototypes (原型) of pillows.
References to pillows can also be found in historical 62 (document) in ancient China. For instance, a stanza of Shijing, the oldest existing collection of Chinese poetry, 63 (mention) a pillow, describing how a melancholic beauty finds it difficult to sleep.
During the Warring States period, pillows in China presented a certain level of craftsmanship and delicacy. The 64 (early) discovered pillow in China was a wooden one unearthed in 65 Chu state tomb.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。·
My dad doesn’t write me letters. And he doesn’t always remember my birthday or wedding anniversary—or even how old I am sometimes.
But I only need to look around me to be reminded of his love. He restored a 100-year-old rocking chair after I told him how much I wanted one. When I moved into my first apartment, he spent his weekends in a small space replacing pipes. And when I lost a blue stone from a favorite necklace, he worked his magic with common stuff.
The four greatest words I know are “Dad will build it”.
I could never forget when I was seven, one day we walked by a toy store window. There in the corner was the most unusual doll house had ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log. Little oval windows were cut into it decorated with white curtains and framed by tiny balconies.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful Do you think Santa Clause will bring it to me ”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag—too high a figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt, as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart,” Dad probably hoped I’d forget about the doll house, but I kept talking about it.
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the faint light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree—but none large enough to contain my doll house.
Paragraph1: Dad could see my disappointment. ____________________________________________________

Paragraph 2: Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me. _______________________________

读后续写
Para1:
Dad could see my disappointment. My tears welling up in eyes, he pulled me onto his lap and gently assured me, “Dad will build it.” As promised, he got down to preparing all the materials right after Christmas. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the doll house. So eager was I that I often stood nearby, occasionally giving a helping hand under his instructions. Gradually, my doll house began to take shape.
Para2:
Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me. With the shape like an upturned log, it looked exactly the same as the one in the toy store-little oval windows, white curtains and even the tiny balconies. But to me, no doll house in the world was better than the one Dad made just for me with his two hands. It was he who brought my dream to life! Screaming with excitement and gratitude, I threw myself at him, “Thank you, Dad.” He smiled, patting me gently on the head with his rough hands. I always know “Dad will build it.” is his Fatherlish to say “I love you.”

Text 1 球赛即将开始
M: It will be a good match and great atmosphere.
W: It’s always good when the local football team plays at home. I love being able to walk to the stadium with all the other supporters.
M: The referee is about to blow the whistle to start the match. Let’s cheer loudly to support the team.
Text 2 语言的使用
W: Simon, you grew up bilingual, didn’t you
M: Yeah. Spanish was the language of talking to my parents at home. It was a little less the language of talking to my sisters because all three of us reach for English first. Now I’m learning a third language-French.
Text 3 业绩未达标
M: Good morning, Phyllis. Could we have a word in my office
W: Of course.
M: I’m sorry to have to say this, but I’m afraid you failed to achieve high enough sales to earn a bonus this month.
Text 4 推迟入住酒店的时间
M: Morning, this is David Brown calling. I booked a room at your hotel for March 10th to 12th.
W: Yes, sir. You want to confirm it, right
M: No. I need to put off my check-in date for five days because my flight has been changed.
W: That’s OK, sir.
Text 5 生日邀请
M: Michael’s birthday is on September 15th, but the invitation I’ve got is for the following day. Is it a mistake
W: No. He’d like to throw a party at the weekend. You’ll have more time to have fun than going to parties on a school night.
Text 6 打算换冰箱
W: Something is wrong with my fridge. ⑥It does not cool enough as required, and the food stored inside spoils faster than usual. Plus, it makes loud noises.
M: That could be a big problem. I have room in my second fridge if you need to store some things.
W: You have two fridges
M: Yeah. ⑦You know, we seldom eat out at restaurants because Cindy is an expert cook. She always stores lots of ingredients in the fridge and cooks delicious food for us. There was a big sale at the appliance store, so we bought another one last week.
W: Is the sale still going on I may need to buy a new one.
Text 7 工作与生活的平衡
W: OK, Mr. Brown, here’s the next question from the audience: How do you maintain a work-life balance
M: For me, maintaining a work-life balance is about clearly defining boundaries and respecting them.
W: How exactly do you do it
M: During weekdays, I make sure to dedicate specific hours to work. ⑧I start by scheduling my time effectively. I prioritize tasks and use productivity tools to keep my work organized and manageable within working hours. Additionally, I practice stress management techniques.
W: You seem to be doing your job well. What do you do after work
M: I try to ensure a smooth transition between personal time and work time by doing activities that help me disconnect, such as reading, exercising, or spending time with my family. ⑨The most important thing is that I make sure to convey my needs and boundaries effectively with my colleagues and boss. This approach helps me maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Text 8 借书
M: Good morning, Miss. I’d like to check out this book.
W: OK. Do you have your student ID card
M: Yes. Here you go.
W: All right. Let me just put this book under your name. Oh, many students come to borrow it.
M: Have you ever read anything by the author of this book
W: Can’t say that I have. What kind of author is he
M: I’ve heard that he writes about the lives of people who have made history. So many people have recommended his books to me because of the practical wisdom they contain.
W: Oh, that does sound good. I’m more of a fiction reader. I think all great stories have some underlying wisdom in them. But what I like about fiction is that it’s up to the reader to find and interpret that life lesson for themselves.
M: For me, because of school, I’ve always associated reading novels with boredom.
W: So, that’s why you read non-fiction
M: Actually, I’m not keen on reading. I don’t really read much at all. This is the first book I’ve picked up outside school.
Text 9 面试
W: Please sit down. Let’s see, you’re Jason Brown, and you major in advertising design.
M: Right. I’ll graduate from college next month.
W: Have you ever done any work in this field
M: No, nothing, but I did some practice work in class.
W: You seem to be doing well at college. What kind of pay are you hoping to get
M: From what I’ve read, it seems that the pay at the beginning would be around $12,000 a year.
W: Here we would start at $10,500 for the first year—a kind of training period. Then you would go to $12,000 in the second year. After that your rises would depend on how you worked.
M: That sounds fair enough. What about the welfare benefits
W: They are all explained in this paper. You can take it along and look at it at home. Time is running short, so I won’t talk about it any more.
M: What do you think the chances are for me to get a job
W: Well, I’ll talk to three people this morning and four this afternoon. We’ll be hiring two people.
M: I surely hope that I can work here.

M: Eitan Bernath is a TV chef and author. He has been named a High Level Supporter to the United Nations’ World Food Program. This is the largest global organization working to end hunger. In the role, he will educate the public about the organization’s work. Bernath is now the youngest person to be named to the position. While growing up, Bernath loved watching cooking shows and recreating dishes he saw. This passion led him, at age 11, to be one of the youngest contestants on the cooking competition series Chopped. Bernath now has an audience of more than 10 million followers on social media who enjoy watching him cook original dishes, which often have an international flavor. Many of the recipes are featured in his best-selling cookbook Eitan Eats the World, published in 2022. He lives in New York City and attends Columbia University. He also appears and makes dishes on The Drew Barrymore Show. As a teenager, Bernath began volunteering with City Harvest, a food rescue organization, to help feed hungry people. That work eventually led him to the United Nations’ World Food Program, which allows him to help more people in the world.
