Carl Wilhelm Scheele ranks as one of the greatest scientists of all time, but he paid a big price for this honor.
Born in 1742 in present-day Germany, Scheele learned about chemicals from his parents starting at a young age. When he was 14, he was sent away to Gothenburg (哥德堡) to become the apprentice (学徒) of a family friend. There he spent eight years studying chemistry and conducting experiments late into the night. Next, Scheele moved around the Holy Roman Empire, working for different chemists and becoming more learned in his trade. In 1767, he moved to Stockholm, where he discovered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stockholm, he became the director of the Locke Laboratory. It was there, while he was analyzing a strange reaction, that Scheele became the first person to identify oxygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based on the theories of his time, that a substance that made up fire was released from items when they burned. Scheele believed oxygen to be this substance, not understanding that oxygen is merely an element that facilitates the chemical reaction that is fire.
As historic as this discovery was, Scheele seldom got credit for it, largely because English scientist Joseph Priestley published findings on oxygen before Scheele, even though it is now generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discovery first.
Through his work, he thus exposed himself to many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly effect on Scheele, and he eventually died of kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite of his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life to chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is often forgotten in the history of science. Though he discovered many elements before other better-known scientists did, his unwillingness to both attend meetings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and to publish his work allowed other scientists to take credit for discoveries that he had made.
( )24.Who first taught Chemistry to Scheele
A.His parents. B.Joseph Priestley.
C.His family friend. D.The Holy Roman Empire.
( )25.When did Scheele probably discover oxygen
A.In 1745. B.In 1767. C.In 1770. D.In 1789.
( )26.What do the underlined words “the element” refer to
A.Oxygen. B.Tartaric acid.
C.The strange reaction. D.The chemical experiment.
( )27.What can we learn about Scheele from the text
A.He has been world-famous since the 1700s.
B.He actually died due to his dangerous work.
C.He discovered oxygen later than Joseph Priestley.
D.He thought his findings were not valuable at all.

The Language Center’s first Trivia Night tested students’ knowledge on different languages and their histories last Friday at Douglass Commons.
“We have decided to conduct this event when the weather is bad so that students who have nowhere to go and stay on campus can come and find a comfortable shelter during a cold winter day,” Language Center Director, Teresa Valdez said. According to Valdez, the idea for Trivia Night came a year ago from a junior and team-member called Elizabeth de Los Reyes. The event engaged students’ interest in languages and showed the high-quality services that the Language Center provides.
Participants competed in small groups that each represented a different language and country. There were five teams in total: Russia, China, Japan, Spain and France. The competition consisted of four rounds with each round consisting of three questions relating to the following topics: literature, language, geography, culture and history.
After a few warm-up questions about how people greet each other in different languages, what continent (大陆) Turkey is found in, and who is the first man to fly to the moon, the questions became increasingly difficult. Each round offered an increasing amount of points a team could receive. The final question was worth 20 points. If a team did not answer it correctly, the point s were taken from the total.
In the meantime, students enjoyed pizza, snacks, and drinks while sharing their linguistic (语言的) interest. Most of the participants knew two or three languages. Others knew more, such as first-year Bartek Jezierski from Poland, who can speak English, Polish, German, Spanish, and Russian.
The winners from first to third place were France, Japan and Russia respectively. All five teams were given some prizes—a blue shopping bag, a cup and stuffed toys. However, students believed the most important prize of the evening was the process of the competition-how students from diverse backgrounds and cultures were able to participate in a friendly competition, and shared their mutual (相互的) love of languages.
( )28.What is one of the purposes of Trivia Night
A.To attract students to learn languages.
B.To help the students suffering from coldness.
C.To collect opinions from the students on its services.
D.To select the best students for the Language Center.
( )29.How many questions were there in the competition in total
A.3. B.4. C.12. D.20.
( )30.What do you think of the atmosphere of the competition
A.Quiet. B.Depressing. C.Romantic. D.Relaxing.
( )31.What did students value most in the competition
A.Some snacks and drinks. B.Various prizes for winners.
C.The course of the competition. D.The services provided by the Language Center.

Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission (发送) and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers (制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what’s around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
( )32.What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text
A.It can improve the safety of automated vehicles.
B.It can help drivers communicate with each other.
C.It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents.
D.It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.
( )33.What can we know about the vehicle generated early warning system
A.It can get information several miles ahead.
B.It is under research and development at present.
C.It has been proved extremely helpful for driving.
D.It will send messages to drivers a few days earlier.
( )34.What will be probably continued with the text
A.Some safety rules when using 5G. B.Some car manufacturers.
C.The sales information of cars with 5G. D.The advantages when using 5G.
( )35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving
B.5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life
C.5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World
D.5G Is on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars

That was the first time I had thought about how people who have almost nothing are sometimes able to 53 the little they have more “ 54 ” than those who own a lot. A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year.
I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. It meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work. Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything
But one morning, my wife gave me a $10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth Why was it that the jogger gave me the money I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain.
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.

M: How do I get there I have no knowledge of this area.
W: Cross the road and turn left at the other side. Walk along the sidewalk until you reach the traffic lights. You will see a shopping center on your right. Walk across the road and turn right after the shopping center. Keep going straight for about 100 metres and the bank is to your left.
M: It sounds a little bit difficult. How far is it from here
W: It’s not so difficult. It’s about five minutes’ walk from here. I can draw a map for you if you wish.
M: Oh, I would really appreciate that.

W: Yes, you’re right. I am from South Africa. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather. Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She bought me some warm suits and dresses, business type of clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. Lively coloured dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.
