Conserving Rhinos (犀牛) in South Africa
The two new Marataba Conservation Camps will give you new experiences. Visitors are expected to take part in all research projects and will see wildlife and get to collect related information. Rhino Conservation is at the heart of Marataba, which has wonderful views of the Waterberg Mountains.
Finding Rare Animals in New Zealand
New Zealand is filled with unique animals, like the tuatara, an animal that lived on Earth before the emergence of human civilization and its closest relative died out during the age of the dinosaurs. You can go to Southland Museum and Art Gallery to meet one or spot them in the wild on Tiritiri Matangi Island.

A month ago, when we were brainstorming ideas for my column, my editor approached me with a challenge: spend $10 at the local second-hand store Goodwill and turn my finds into new treasures. I hesitated. I was doubtful about my ability to turn trash (废物) into treasures. But the New Year seemed like a good time to push the limits of my creativity, so I made up my mind to give it a shot.
I took my $10 and went to Goodwill. I spent over an hour digging through shelves, looking for something I could safely upcycle. I was not especially handy, so I didn’t want to use anything easily breakable or damage an old hardcover book for the purpose of decoration.
Therefore, I took a step back and decided to choose a project before I picked my items. I thought back to an article I once wrote on container gardening and decided that I could make a pretty planter out of almost anything. With my new goal in mind, I chose a basket and a bag of stones I could use for drainage (排水) for plants.
It felt cheap to just fill the containers with soil, but my limited skills left me with few tools at home. Plus, I needed plants. So I picked up paint and plants from the market. Then I sprayed (喷) the basket. I never seemed to be able to add enough color to the basket. I figured it might look better when it dried. Next morning, although I followed a number of online recommendations, I found my workspace was a mess after watering my precious plants in their new home.
The process of turning trash into treasures was stressful, but the finished products have found a place in my home. Unconsciously, I have fallen in love with it and hopefully, I will gain some of the skills that will take my game to the next level next year.
24. Why did the author regard the editor’s suggestion as a challenge
A. For lack of enough time.
B. For being short of creative ideas.
C. For the complexity of the task.
D. For being inexperienced in recycling.
25. Which word best describes the author’s character according to paragraph 2
A. Conservative. B. Flexible.
C. Sensitive. D. Modest.
26. What inspired the author to grow plants
A. A planting project. B. An article about gardening.
C. The editor’s words. D. The items found in the Goodwill.
27. What does the author’s upcycling lead to finally
A. A messy workspace. B. A new career path.
C. Valued parts of home. D. Better painting skills.
C
A fresh start may motivate many people to break bad habits. Some are easier to shake than others, and the tendency to procrastinate (拖延) is among the most difficult.
“At its heart, procrastination is about avoidance,” Fuschia Sirois, a professor of psychology at Durham University in the U.K., told Live Science. Rather than the task itself, however, it’s often the feelings attached to an activity that cause people to duck.
Tackling the first line of a college essay may bring feelings of self-doubt, for example. When you’re faced with a broad question or topic to write about, the lack of clear instructions can cause a fear of not getting it right or of what might happen if you get it wrong. Procrastination is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary, meaning it isn’t caused by a person’s need to prioritize (按优先顺序排列) other tasks or by an unforeseen emergency.
“Procrastination becomes a quick, easy way of dealing with something,” Sirois said. But it can pile on more pressure by leaving a task hanging over a person’s head, thus resulting in a harmful cycle that can damage mental health (such as higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression), lower academic performance and lead to financial hardship.
Luckily for those of you who drag your feet, research has shown that besides managing emotions, taking a step back when a task feels stressful to assess what feelings the situation has brought about and why you wish to avoid them can help. “In the case of a work assignment, finding something meaningful about the task and rewarding yourself for finishing it might also be helpful,” Sirois said. “But if this is the year you want to stop procrastinating, let your resolution be to stop being too self-critical. Letting your procrastination go is effective in reducing procrastination in the future,” she added.
28. What does Sirois think contributes to procrastination
A. Inability to prioritize tasks. B. Negative emotions about the task.
C. Great difficulty of the activity. D. Lack of time management skills.
29. Why is procrastination different from other forms of delay
A. It arises from personal choice. B. It happens more unnoticeably.
C. It takes more effort to overcome. D. It relates to unknown emergency.
30. Which aspect of procrastination is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. Its definition. B. Its function.
C. Its consequences. D. Its causes.
31. What does Sirois suggest at last
A. Analyzing tasks in detail.
B. Rewarding yourself for daily success.
C. Monitoring emotions on purpose.
D. Avoiding too much focus on procrastination.

There are many potential sources of clean energy out there: solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen-based energy, and more. One of the less-known sources of clean energy is wave energy. Now the energy is being put to use in an almost funny way, turning seawater into drinking water by Oneka, a Canadian startup.
In general, there are two traditional kinds of desalination (脱盐) technology. In the first technology, seawater is heated till the water changes into steam, leaving the salt behind, and then the steam is cooled, turning into water and available for use. In the second one, seawater is pushed through a see-through thin material, separating the salt and the water, which consumes relatively less fuel compared with the first technology. Whichever technology is used, however, most desalination plants run on non-renewable energy.
Desalination equipment is traditionally powered by fossil (化石) fuels, but the world has certainly reached a vital point where it’s necessary to move away from fossil fuel powered desalination. This is where Oneka’s unique desalination technology comes in, which uses floating desalination machines. They are attached to a kind of floating device which absorbs energy from the ocean waves and changes it into mechanical forces to pump (抽运) the water through the see-through thin material system. Eventually, the fresh water is pumped to land.
The waste from conventional desalination plants contains high concentrations of salt which is discharged into the sea, creating a zone where sea life dies off. Oneka’s technology steers clear of this, because the water that streams back into the ocean only has a 30 percent increase in the salt concentration, and is quickly spread by the waves.
This innovative technology shows us that sometimes the solutions to complicated (复杂的) problems don’t have to be complicated at all. Sometimes all you need is the ocean waves.
32. What is the first technology in paragraph 2 like
A. It is labor-wasting. B. It is energy-hungry.
C. It removes salt from gas. D. It betters the second one.
33. What can we learn about Oneka’s technology
A. It’s slightly complicated. B. It leaves little salt behind.
C. It’s mechanically driven. D. It reshapes fresh water storage.
34. What does the underlined phrase “steers clear of” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Avoids. B. Improves.
C. Replaces. D. Achieves.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Floating Desalination Machines B. Sea Waves: A New Clean Energy
C. Wave-powered Green Desalination D. Desalination: The Future of Fresh Water

The summer finally came. That afternoon, the hot sun was shining brightly, making the tree leaves almost burn and making people’s bodies seem to be on fire. Having nothing interesting to do at home, I decided to go to the pool to enjoy the coolness instead of going swimming. The reason was simple — I still couldn’t swim. I was impatient, and I always failed to learn to swim and suffered losses. So the swimming lesson was put off again and again.
Upon arriving at the gym’s pool, I was greeted by a lively scene. Some people just jumped into the water, with hands entering first and the body following in a smooth motion. Some were kicking their legs rhythmically below the surface. All were happy. That was infectious (有感染力的), and I couldn’t help but feel deep admiration. Then I made a decision!
Taking a deep breath, I followed their example, closing my eyes and jumping into the “vast water” with a plop (扑通声).
At this moment, my head was pointing to the ground and my feet to the sky. When I “plopped” to the bottom, my whole body was swinging hard and my hands and feet lost their ability to feel. I just felt water rushing towards me, and my nose was filled with water. It was very terrible. Suddenly, I was hit by something. I struggled out of the light blue water bit by bit as if being dragged.
“That’s horrible!” I shouted loudly, and while I was complaining, I suddenly realized that I couldn’t swim in the first place, so why should I be shocked Just when I decided to stay away from water, someone gently patted (轻拍) my shoulder and said, “Don’t be discouraged, little girl. Look, swimming requires ...” The lady introduced herself as Alison. She gave me a “lecture” on how to hold my breath, how to kick gently, and how to start with floating with the help of a swimming ring, being patient while giving me a demonstration.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

1—5 ACCBB 6—10 CCABC 11—15 CBCAB 16—20 CAAAB
A篇
根据Helping Baby Elephants in Kenya部分中的“Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is children’s favorite place. This center is set up to save baby elephants, and visitors can interact with the babies while giving food to them.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“New Zealand is filled with unique animals, like the tuatara, an animal that lived on Earth before the emergence of human civilization and its closest relative died out during the age of the dinosaurs.”
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中的“There’s no better way for us to learn about the amazing creatures that share our planet than up-close and personal animal encounters.”
根据第一段中的“I was doubtful about my ability to turn trash (废物) into treasures.”、第二段中的“I was not especially handy”和倒数第二段中的“my limited skills left me with few tools at home”可知,作者由于不擅长做手工,缺乏相关经验,所以认为主编的建议是一项挑战。故选D。
根据第二段中的“I was not especially handy, so I didn’t want to use anything easily breakable or damage an old hardcover book for the purpose of decoration.” conservative“不愿冒险的,谨慎的”;flexible“能适应新情况的,灵活的”;sensitive“敏感的”;modest“谦虚的”。故选A。
根据第三段中的“I thought back to an article I once wrote on container gardening and decided that I could make a pretty planter out of almost anything.”
根据最后一段中的“The process of turning trash into treasures was stressful, but the finished products have found a place in my home.
根据第二段中的“procrastination is about avoidance”和“Rather than the task itself, however, it’s often the feelings attached to an activity that cause people to duck.”
根据第三段中的“Procrastination is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary, meaning it isn’t caused by a person’s need to prioritize (按优先顺序排列) other tasks or by an unforeseen emergency.” 故选A。
根据最后一段的“But if this is the year you want to stop procrastinating, let your resolution be to stop being too self-critical. Letting your procrastination go is effective in reducing procrastination in the future”可知,Sirois认为如果想要停止拖延,那么就坚决停止过度自我批评,停止关注拖延在减少以后的拖延方面是有效的,即避免太过关注拖延。
根据第二段中对第一种技术的描述“seawater is heated till the water changes into steam, leaving the salt behind, and then the steam is cooled, turning into water and available for use”和对第二种技术的描述“In the second one, seawater is pushed through a see-through thin material, separating the salt and the water, which consumes relatively less fuel compared with the first technology.”
根据第三段中的“This is where Oneka’s unique desalination technology comes in, which uses floating desalination machines. They are attached to a kind of floating device which absorbs energy from the ocean waves and changes it into mechanical forces to pump (抽运) the water through the see-through thin material system.”
画线短语后面的“this”指的是“排放高盐度废弃物产生死水区,导致海洋生物死亡”这个问题,再根据画线短语后的进一步说明“because the water that streams back into the ocean only has a 30 percent increase in the salt concentration, and is quickly spread by the waves”可以推断,Oneka的机器往海水中排放的废水盐度很低,避免了传统脱盐工厂排放高盐度废弃物产生死水区,导致海洋生物死亡的问题。 故选A。
空后的“that”指代的是E项中的“a shared purpose”;E项中的“shared”与上文中的“Group”相呼应。故选E。
故选A。
C项中的“Pet Wash”与空后的“clean animals”和“this activity”照应。

故填was offered。
故填what。

Nowadays, people have different attitudes to the introduction of pre-made dishes to schools, which sparked a heated debate in our class last week.
Forty-three percent of us held the view that introducing this kind of dishes can enrich the choice of diet. In the meanwhile, it can reduce labour costs. The rest focused on whether such dishes kept in freezers are nutritious. Apart from this, nutrient loss is unavoidable during the heating process.
As far as I’m concerned, I hold a positive attitude to them because they enable us to taste different food at a relatively low price. As long as food safety is guaranteed, there is no need to worry.
Paragraph 1:
“Why not try one more time ” said Alison. I hesitated, and then murmured, “Perhaps I should.” Her smile broadened in response, “That’s the spirit!” With the swimming ring serving as safety net, I practiced what she taught. After getting used to floating, I tried to imitate (模仿) her movements. My efforts at first were awkward, yet she reassured me that it was all part and parcel of the learning process. Standing by the pool, she applauded every small victory. Hours later, though I wasn’t swimming like the others, I succeeded in taking the first steps.
Paragraph 2:
As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well. But I knew what I needed to do. The following morning found me at the gym once more, where only a few early swimmers dotted the pool. Gazing at the inviting blue water of the pool, now a familiar friend, I jumped in with newfound determination. Stroke after stroke, breath after breath, I practiced. Finally, my arms, no longer tentative (迟疑的), cut through the water with purpose. My legs followed, kicking rhythmically. I knew I had learned swimming and a valuable lesson— being patient.

故选A。
C项中的“Pet Wash”与空后的“clean animals”和“this activity”照应。故选C。

根据上文的“She came in third!” opportunity“机会”;insight“洞察力”;interest“利益,好处”;reward“回报,奖赏”。故选D。
根据第一段的“Christine McCoombes was told that her daughter, Hallee, would never walk.” stimulate“激发”;expect“预料,预期,预计”;force“强迫,迫使”;advise“建议”。故选B。
根据下文中的“Hallee’s parents have watched their daughter’s competition so many times, their hearts still burst with pride”可知,此处指尽管Hallee的父母看了这么多次女儿的比赛,他们还是为女儿感到骄傲。due to“由于”;along with“连同……一起,同时”;except for“除了”;even though“尽管,即使”。故选D。
capable“有能力的,有才能的”;fond“喜爱”;proud“自豪的,得意的,引以为荣的”;mindful“记着,想着,考虑到”。故选A。
故填was offered。
故填what。
under the guidance of sb.“在某人的指导下”为固定搭配。故填under。
此处的position特指上文的“settled facedown onto the heated table and comfortably lay there”。
此处是let sth. do sth. 故填them。
故填and。

Text 8
W: Jason, I heard you went fishing in the Detroit River. Did you go there to have some fun with your family
M: No. I went fishing there with my colleagues. You know, every spring we need to go fishing in the Detroit River to get an idea of the numbers and kinds of fish that live there. And yesterday we got a big surprise.
W: Did you find a new species
M: No. We found a very big fish. It took us about six minutes to pull the fish. It was a lake sturgeon (湖鲟). The species has a shark-like tail and lives on the bottoms of lakes and rivers.
W: So how much did the fish weigh
M: You can guess.
W: 100 pounds
M: No. It weighed more than 140 pounds. It was nearly 5 feet long. We believe the fish was over 100 years old.
W: So is the species difficult to see
M: Yes. There are only about 7,000 left in our country.
W: That’s bad. I’m afraid they’ll disappear if they’re not protected.

W: I won’t be at home this Friday, so please come before this day.
M: OK. What chores do you want me to do in your garden
W: First, some branches of my trees need cutting down. There are just too many branches now. I also want you to dig a few garden beds (苗床) for me. I want to grow some vegetables. And the unwanted grass should be got rid of.
M: OK. Anything else
W: No. That’s all. Bye.
M: Wait. Don’t hang off. You haven’t told me your address yet.
W: Oh, sorry. I totally forgot that.
