Summary
Jo, a volunteer teacher in Africa, thought it wonderful to receive a parcel 1. from her home. She had been 2.dying(die)to have some of her favourite sweets. The high school where she worked was a bush school, whose classrooms were made of bamboo and grass. It took her only a few minutes to walk to school down a 3.dusty(dust)track. The other day when Jo was showing the boys a chemistry experiment, the mixture was 4.bubbling(bubble)before she knew it. The boys who had never come 5.across anything like this before were so frightened that they started jumping out of the windows. Sometimes, Jo wondered if chemistry was relevant 6.to the kids and doubted whether she was making any difference to the boys’ lives.Last weekend Jo and her colleague Jenny 7.did(do)visit a remote village which was the home of one of the boys,Tombe. When they arrived, Tombe's father led them to his house, a low bamboo hut with grass 8. sticking(stick)out of the roof. There being no windows, the hut was so dark inside that it took time for her eyes 9.to adjust (adjust). After dinner, Jo listened to the family softly talking to each other though she couldn't participate much in their conversation. She thought it was a privilege to 10.have spent(spend) a day with Tombe’s family.
