Nickenson Chery began at Florida National University(FNU)in 2008 as a radiology major. Midway through his career, Nickenson switched to Health Services Administration after realizing he’d prefer the medical field. But the career change came with stress: “I spent entire nights awake studying and doing homework. I’d consistently go to bed at 2 or 3 a. m., only to wake up early the next day and start over.” The hard work eventually paid off as Nickenson graduated from FNU with his Bachelor’s Degree in 2015.
When asked about his experience and impression of his time at FNU, he said: “I truly loved FNU. It was a great experience. I always felt at home and part of a family. If you need any help, professors and staff are always available. They give you all the tools necessary to get your work done and succeed. If it were not for FNU, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ll always recommend FNU to anyone looking for a great education, regardless of what they want to study.”
Nickenson’s journey was just beginning, taking a long road that led him across the country searching for the perfect career. It started here in South Florida, serving as an intern(实习医生)at Aventura Hospital. When that didn’t lead to a long-term option, he moved to Las Vegas for a short amount of time, only to leave there as well and end up in his current home, Boston. Nickenson Chery now works at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, proving that whatever the struggles one faces perseverance and hard work will lead you to success.
Nickenson left these words to current students at FNU: “You have to know where you’re going. Don’t take anything for granted. If it were not for FNU that taught me a lot of stuff in and out of the classroom, I would have never gotten this position. I have a degree from FNU; nothing can stop me.”

The maker of ChatGPT recently announced its next move into generative artificial intelligence. San Francisco-based OpenAI’s new text-to-video generator, called Sora, is a tool that instantly makes short videos based on written commands, called prompts.
Sora is not the first of its kind. Google, Meta and Runway ML are among the other companies to have developed similar technology. But the high quality of videos displayed by OpenAI — some released after CEO Sam Altman asked social media users to send in ideas for written prompts — surprised observers.
A photographer from New Hampshire posted one suggestion, or prompt, on X. The prompt gave details about a kind of food to be cooked, gnocchi(意大利团子), as well as the setting — an old Italian country kitchen. The prompt said: “An instructional cooking session for homemade gnocchi, hosted by a grandmother — a social media influencer, set in a rustic(土气的)Tuscan country kitchen.” Altman answered a short time later with a realistic video that showed what the prompt described.
The tool is not yet publicly available. OpenAI has given limited information about how it was built. The company also has not stated what imagery and video sources were used to train Sora. At the same time, the video results led to fears about the possible ethical and societal effects.
The New York Times and some writers have taken legal actions against OpenAI for its use of copyrighted works of writing to train ChatGPT. And OpenAI pays a fee to The Associated Press, the source of this report, to license its text news archive(档案). OpenAI said in a blog post that it is communicating with artists, policymakers and others before releasing the new tool to the public.
The company added that it is working with “red teamers” — people who try to find problems and give helpful suggestions — to develop Sora. “We are working with red teamers — domain experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content, and bias — who will be adversarially testing the model,” the company said. “We’re also building tools to help detect misleading content such as a detection classifier that can tell when a video was generated by Sora.”
28. What makes Sora impressive
A. Its artificial intelligence history. B. Its ethical and societal influence.
C. Its extraordinary video quality. D. Its written commands and prompts.
29. What can we infer from the text
A. Some disagreements over Sora have arisen.
B. Sora is the first text-to-video generator in history.
C. OpenAI CEO Altman wrote a prompt as an example.
D. All the details about how Sora was built have been shared.
30. What is the main idea of Paragraph 6
A. The company’s current challenge.
B. The company’s advanced technology.
C. The company’s problems in management.
D. The company’s efforts for Sora’s improvement.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards Sora
A. Neutral. B. Optimistic.
C. Pessimistic. D. Cautious.

Caribbean box jellyfish(水母)can learn to spot and avoid obstacles despite lacking a central brain, according to a new study. This is the first evidence that jellyfish can do something called associative learning. The nervous systems of Caribbean box jellyfish are fairly simple, including four “rhopalia(视神经束)” on a jellyfish’s body, each of which has six “eyes”, by which the jellyfish judge a mangrove(红树林)root’s distance based on how dark it looks compared to the water and make their way round it. In common waters, nearby roots have high contrast. Only distant roots fade into the background. But in murky waters, even near-by roots can blend into their surroundings and have low contrast. The researchers wondered if Caribbean box jellyfish could learn that low-contrast objects which might at first seem distant were actually close by.
To find out, the team put 12 jellyfish into a round water tank. The tank was surrounded by low-contrast gray and white stripes(条纹), which might appear to a jellyfish like roots in clear water. A camera filmed the animals for about seven minutes. At first, they seemed to see the gray stripes as distant roots and swam away, ending up bumping the tank wall. But those collisions seemed to lead the jellyfish to reconsider the stripes. Soon, the creatures treated the gray stripes more like close roots in murky water and avoided them.
This suggests that the rhopalia alone can learn that seemingly distant, low-contrast objects are in fact close enough to avoid. That, in turn, hints that these nerve centers are behind Caribbean box jellyfish learning.
“That’s the coolest part of the paper,” says Ken Cheng, a biologist at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. “That gets us one step down into the wiring of how it works.” For Ga lle Botton-Amiot, tracing learning to the rhopalia raises new questions. “They have four of these things in their bodies. So how does that work ” asks this neurobiologist. If a jellyfish loses one of its rhopalia, does it forget everything those eyes saw and the neurons had learned Or do the other rhopalia remember it
32. Jellyfish are able to avoid obstacles because ______.
A. they use brain cells to process information gathered
B. they are driven by excellent survival instinct
C. they have unique organs to measure the distance
D. they rely on different levels of visual signal input
33. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to the underlined word in paragraph 1
A. Unusual. B. Cloudy.
C. Deep. D. Rapid.
34. What can we infer from paragraphs 2 and 3
A. Jellyfish usually tend to be scared off by the gray color.
B. Jellyfish tend to compare stripes with mangrove roots.
C. Stimulation in controlled environment backed the finding.
D. Rhopalia are in control of the jellyfish’s memory system.
35. Which can be the best title for the article
A. No brain, no gain Denies the jellyfish
B. Unique “eyes” help jellyfish survive
C. Evolution of learning: from nerve to brain
D. White or gray Creature’s decision-making

Green Thumb
All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there ” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”
“What But Laynie—” I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh.… I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad ” I couldn’t speak.
“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Later I found Laynie sitting by the spot where Molly was buried.

I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Realizing the need to face my mistake and make things right, I rose and approached Laynie. As I explained that I was the one who had placed the larger, better-looking items there, Laynie was taken aback, stuttering in confusion, “So, I didn’t know how to plant at all ” I confirmed her fears with a heavy heart, meeting her gaze with difficulty. “Then, how is Molly ” Despite the nervous butterflies in my stomach, I mustered the courage to confess, “A goldfish is not a seed meant for planting in soil. Sadly, she is no longer with us.” The devastating reality of Molly’s loss hit Laynie like a ton of bricks, causing big, fat tears to stream down her face as she stormed out.
Later I found Laynie sitting by the spot where Molly was buried. Laynie was offering a heartfelt apology for the pain she put the little thing through. Seeing her great grief tore me apart. In a spontaneous gesture, I fetched my gardening kit and proposed that we create a garden next to Molly’s resting place to keep her company. Molly’s face brightened as she nodded in agreement and eagerly joined me in preparing the soil, digging holes, and planting seeds. When she firmed down the last clump of soil, a sense of relief washed over her. With diligent care and daily attention, we began to witness the fruits of our labor and responsibility. It brought me joy to see how we both matured alongside our thriving garden.

Text 1
W: I just moved into a new apartment. It’s so much bigger than our dormitory. I can’t believe you are still living there.
M: I actually moved in with Daniel. His home is huge with a beautiful garden! He has so many bathrooms.
Text 2
W: Will you come with me to take the garbage out
M: Are you confused of where the garbage can is It is right there outside by the light.
W: No, I am afraid of the neighbor’s angry cat. It attacked me yesterday!
Text 3
W: Mom said it’s going to rain, so bring an umbrella.
M: The weather report said it was supposed to miss us and hit the northern towns. I’ll be fine without one. Mom’s always worried for no reason.
W: Oh yeah. You’re going south, right
Text 4
M: I have 50 pages more to read tonight, but it’s already 11: 00. I really need some coffee. It’ll take me at least two hours, and I need it done by 10: 00 tomorrow morning.
W: Just wake up at 7: 00. You’ll have plenty of time then.
Text 5
W: I wanted to buy a new pair of shoes from Foot Locker, but the ones I want cost $100. I can only spend $75 at the most.
M: I will pay for half of the price. You can consider it as part of your birthday gift.
Text 6
M: How long have you been playing that game for It seems like hours.
W: I just got it and can’t put it down. You know how I love fitting pieces together. This game has fruit and animals that you have to match up.
M: At least it’s not another gun or piano game. You had better not miss your job interview, though. That would make a poor impression on the hiring manager. When are you going to get ready
W: I forgot to tell you that it was changed to tomorrow. I have plenty of time to prepare. I only have to go see the dentist and talk with my professor later today.
M: Fine then, but don’t miss the dentist because of that game.

W: We care about quality here, not just about doing enough work to get by. When you work at Trader Joe’s, you’re more than an employee. You’re like family!
M: In my family, we usually argue over things like whose turn it is to take out the trash. We also complain a lot when there’s no dessert. Is working here like that
W: OK... Let me give you a better idea. Working here is like being in a family in some ways. You know how children get punished when they don’t clean their rooms, or when they go out with friends before they finish their homework
M: Yes, I can relate to that.
W: Well, that’s more like how it is to work at Trader Joe’s. The employees are the children ... and I’m the mother.
M: Are you the only parent at this store I think I’d rather be adopted by someone else...
Text 8
W: Who are these people dressed in funny costumes
M: That picture was taken when we worked as circus performers in Moscow. On the right is my dad’s cousin Carl and next to him is Carl’s father who owned the circus.
W: I can’t believe you were one of those people who do dangerous jumps like that. How long were you in the circus
M: I started when I was a kid about 12. We stayed with the circus for about 10 years. Shortly after we moved the show to Normandy, my older sister broke her leg. Then my parents decided maybe it was time for us to retire. My sister got hurt when she was about 23. I was a year younger at the time and didn’t want to leave.
W: That’s too bad she got hurt. Do you still do performances
M: I consult these days. I actually have to travel to India next week to look at the safety equipment of a circus. It will be the first time returning there after my sister got hurt. She lives there managing a hotel.
Text 9
M: Hello, there. You look exhausted.
W: Hi. I can’t stop for long. I still have a mile to run.
M: A mile Wow! You really do take fitness seriously.
W: Everybody should. Even on rainy days like this.
M: I suppose you’re right. I see a lot of very heavy people these days.
W: They are harming themselves by eating the wrong things and not doing exercise.
M: So how much running do you do Wouldn’t it be better going to a gym
W: Gyms cost money. I can run for free. Two miles a day, three times a week—it’s an easy routine.
M: It doesn’t sound easy to me. I suppose I should do some exercise and get enough sleep as well. I seldom get my full eight hours.
W: You really should.
M: On the plus side, I’m a healthy eater. I eat plenty of vegetables and just a little meat.
W: At least you are making an effort. With a few small changes, you could have a healthy lifestyle.
M: You’re right. I can’t do much about my bed times, but from tomorrow I am going to travel to work on my bike.
W: Swimming is good exercise as well.
M: Maybe I’ll check out the local pool sometime.
W: I promise you will feel so much better.

Too often the modern trend is for people to be separated from each other. Cars have taken us off the streets, where we used to stop to chat. Television has planted us firmly in our living rooms, instead of going out with other people. We must strike back against the selfishness and greed of our modern world and help our fellow human beings. Helping someone has many advantages. It makes you feel better about yourself, improves someone’s life and makes the world a better place. Don’t know where to start Well, just smile and be friendly. Sometimes a simple little thing like this can put a smile and a warm feeling in someone else’s heart. Call a charity to volunteer. The next time you see someone pulled over with a flat tire or in need of help, stop and ask how you can help. Take the time to teach someone a skill you fort someone in grief. Often someone who is sad or frustrated just needs someone who will listen. Be patient. Sometimes people can have difficulty understanding things or learning to do something right. Find ways to express your love to others, whether they are your partner, child, friends, co-workers, or a complete stranger.
