It was a hot day in early September. “Write about summer vacation,” Mrs. Peabody gave the class a writing assignment. She was a strict, older woman. “Be as creative as you can. But,” Mrs. Peabody added, as she always did, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim didn’t want to write a stupid essay about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the assignment and wrote what he wanted to. Not an essay at all but a short story. Science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 four hours a day.
The next morning he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English
class, he saw the way Mrs. Peabody looked at him with a strange look in her strict, psychic eyes for long. I’m in trouble, Jim thought, staring at the floor.
Mrs. Peabody said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”
This’s bad, Jim thought. I’m getting an F, I know it.
“But,” the teacher continued, “one student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”
This’s worse than an F... I’m in note-to-the-parents territory now.
“All of your essays read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment. Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, being Mrs. Peabody, she added strictly, “though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.
What a small thing really, he now reflected as he dodged through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him.
24.Why couldn’t Jim sleep well
A.Because he felt tired out after writing for a whole day.
B.Because he thought the story he wrote was interesting.
C.Because he was afraid of being punished by his parents.
D.Because he worried that Mrs.Peabody might be unsatisfied.

B.Mrs. Peabody enjoyed giving her students surprises.

Some students sit at their desks. They’re wearing special glasses. What are they doing
Looking around outer space! Other students are making toy cars go really fast. Using what
The power of their minds!
This may sound like a movie. But most classrooms are expected to be like this someday.
They’ll have all kinds of technology!
One kind is virtual reality (VR). It lets students go on field trips—no school bus needed.
Looking through VR glasses, students can “visit” places in 3D.They can look around as if they’re there. Students can pick avatars (虚拟形象). And they can meet up with other students through their avatars. How cool is that
Something else that’s cool for school: a headband that lets students power computer games with their minds! How does it work It records electrical signals from the students’ brains. The signals are measured by a computer. And the measurements can control an action on the screen—like moving toy cars around a track.
Today, the technology keeps pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. With the help of it, students are able to use 3D printers to create an endless list of tools, clothes, food, art, buildings, jewelry, and more. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing (加法制造) method that creates a physical item from a digital model file. The technology works by adding layer (层) upon layer of material to build up a complete item.
What else is rolling into schools Robots! Some schools already have them. And they’re making learning fun. Take Robin the robot. She teaches using games.
Some schools also have telepresence robots. They’re like tablet computers on wheels. They can be controlled from anywhere. So say you’re sick at home. Your robot moves around class for you. And its camera lets you join the class. How high-tech!
27.Which fits best in the empty box on the right
A.Students can look around places with avatars.
B.Classrooms will use all kinds of new technology.

B.The telepresence robots will take over as teachers.
C.How virtual reality might be used in the classroom.
D.The technology helps sick students join the class at home.
29.Amy wants to know about different places without being there. What should she do
A.Check a webpage for Robin the robot. B.Visit different cities with VR glasses.

The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair of feet.
But Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischief (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, he said to him: “Why should I make your feet over again To see you run away from home once more “
“I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good…”
“Boys always promise that when they want something,” said Geppetto. “I promise to go to school every day, to study, and to succeed.”
“Boys always sing that song when they want their own will.”
“But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.”
Geppetto, though trying to look very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood, he set to work diligently.
In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender, nimble little feet, strong and quick, modeled as if by an artist’s hands.
“Close your eyes and sleep!” Geppetto then said to the Marionette.
Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended (假装) to be asleep, while Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of glue melted in an eggshell, doing his work so well that the joint could hardly be seen.
As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from very joy.
“To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school I need a suit of clothes.”
Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough.
Pinocchio ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly: “Now I look like a gentleman.”
“Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.”
“Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.”
“What is it ”
“An A-B-C book.”
Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), he ran out of the house without another word. After a while he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirt sleeves and the day was cold.
“Where’s your coat, Father ”
“I have sold it.”
“Why did you sell it ”
“It’s too warm.”
Pinocchio understood the answer in a twinkling, and, unable to restrain his tears, he jumped on his father’s neck and kissed him over and over.

Many Westerners have the assumption (假设) that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu. This is, of course, a silly belief. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
Like most people from the West, I was first introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films. Stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world. The flashy (炫酷的) and impressive performances they gave in films like Rumble In The Bronx (Chan) and Enter The Dragon (Lee) made them household names in the US and elsewhere.
However, my own personal interest in kung fu was actually inspired by a hip-hop group. Wu-Tang Clan (“武当派”), founded in the early 1990s in New York City, is one of the most influential (有影响力的) hip-hop groups in history.
I myself do not practice kung fu. However, the concepts (哲学理念) behind it are quite interesting to me. There is a Bruce Lee quote that I often think of when I’m struggling with challenges in life. “Be formless … shapeless, like water,” he once said. By this, he meant that you should be ready to adapt (调整) and change your attitudes or beliefs when you face difficulties. I think this is a good way to deal with life.
回答下面5个问题, 每题答案不超过5个词。
61.How were most Western people first introduced to kung fu
62.How many films are mentioned in this article
63.Who inspired my interest in kung fu
64.When does the writer often think of Bruce Lee
65.When was Wu-Tang Clan founded
