The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair of feet.
But Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischief (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, he said to him: “Why should I make your feet over again To see you run away from home once more “
“I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good…”
“Boys always promise that when they want something,” said Geppetto. “I promise to go to school every day, to study, and to succeed.”
“Boys always sing that song when they want their own will.”
“But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.”
Geppetto, though trying to look very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood, he set to work diligently.
In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender, nimble little feet, strong and quick, modeled as if by an artist’s hands.
“Close your eyes and sleep!” Geppetto then said to the Marionette.
Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended (假装) to be asleep, while Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of glue melted in an eggshell, doing his work so well that the joint could hardly be seen.
As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from very joy.
“To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school I need a suit of
clothes.”
Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough.
Pinocchio ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly: “Now I look like a gentleman.”
“Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.”
“Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.”
“What is it ”
“An A-B-C book.”
Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), he ran out of the house without another word. After a while he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirt sleeves and the day was cold.
“Where’s your coat, Father ”
“I have sold it.”
“Why did you sell it ”
“It’s too warm.”
Pinocchio understood the answer in a twinkling, and, unable to restrain his tears, he jumped on his father’s neck and kissed him over and over.

(2024·江苏·二模)Long ago, there was a judge who was famous throughout the land. When two people argued, the judge was always able to find a solution that was fair to both people, whether they were rich or poor.
One day, the judge went to a busy market. Merchants (商人) were selling live chickens, fruits, vegetables, and just about anything else you could think of. As he walked through the market, the judge saw that a large crowd had gathered outside a shop that sold live chickens. The judge walked near the crowd and asked a woman what was going on.
“A poor farmer was carrying a heavy sack (麻布大袋),” said the woman. “He accidentally fell down and dropped the sack on a chicken, killing it. The chicken belonged to the rich and greedy merchant who owns this shop,” she said, pointing to the shop.
The judge could hear two men shouting at each other. “It was lucky I was passing by,” thought the judge. “There is clearly an argument going on, and I am going to solve it.”
“Excuse me!” said the judge in a loud voice to the crowd. “Please let me through.” ①When people turned and saw the judge, they quickly moved aside to let him pass through.

If you are looking to get a better understanding of the world around you, chemistry is the perfect subject to study. It’s a study of matter (物质), its properties — ways in which it behaves in special conditions, and how it interacts with everything around it. At the heart of all the discoveries, such as medicine, cooking, and several other areas, is one important table that organizes elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties: the periodic table.
Although the first periodic table was published in 1869, it was a work in progress for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Since ancient times, people have been interested in elements such as gold, tin, iron and copper (which are written as Au, Sn, Fe and Cu in the table) in their natural forms. They were dug up from the ground and used to make jewelry, guns, coins, and many other things. Over time, people became more curious about these metals and how they were made up. In ancient Greece, Aristotle and other philosophers said things were made from the elements of earth, water, fire and air. For years, this idea was accepted. Then people began to consider this idea again during the Age of Enlightenment.
In 1661, Irish scientist Robert Boyle described an element as something that “cannot be broken down into a simpler matter by a chemical reaction”. Over a century later, Antone-Laurent de Lavoisier, Father of Chemistry, would publish the first modern textbook on chemistry. In it, he listed some matter which he believed should be divided as elements into two groups: metals and non-metals. Although his work wasn’t completely correct, it represented a big step forward at that time.
Over the next century, scientists started to divide the elements into different groups depending on their properties and atomic weights. However, it is Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev who is usually believed as the first person to make a periodic table. Although other scientists had handed in tables, they were finally refused by the scientific community because they were short of details. Mendeleev put all of the elements in a proper order according to their atomic mass. He was even smart enough to leave empty spaces for elements which hadn’t been discovered at the time. Although Mendeleev’s periodic table wasn’t perfect, it set the way or order which is
similar to the one used today.
10.Why did people first become interested in elements

A.The influence of chemistry is the easiest to see in the real world.
B.Aristotle was spoken highly of during the Age of Enlightenment.

It was a hot day in early September. “Write about summer vacation,” Mrs. Peabody gave the class a writing assignment. She was a strict, older woman. “Be as creative as you can. But,” Mrs. Peabody added, as she always did, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim didn’t want to write a stupid essay about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the assignment and wrote what he wanted to. Not an essay at all but a short story. Science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 four hours a day.
The next morning he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English class, he saw the way Mrs. Peabody looked at him with a strange look in her strict, psychic eyes for long. I’m in trouble, Jim thought, staring at the floor.
Mrs. Peabody said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”
This’s bad, Jim thought. I’m getting an F, I know it.
“But,” the teacher continued, “one student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”
This’s worse than an F... I’m in note-to-the-parents territory now.
“All of your essays read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment. Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, being Mrs. Peabody, she added strictly, “though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.
What a small thing really, he now reflected as he dodged through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him.

B.Mrs. Peabody enjoyed giving her students surprises.
C.Jim’s parents were easy to get angry about his study.
D.The students would learn to be creative while writing.
(2024·江苏常州·二模)Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic (北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal-gold. And because shipping and transportation (运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles (肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables (马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge’s sons and daughters at long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled (爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the cold North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win but the result was the opposite.
On the night of Manuel’s betrayal, no one saw him and Buck went off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck’s neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but
Buck had learned to trust men he knew.
However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened (收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

(2024·江苏徐州·三模)I hoped to be set free one day, so I was nice to the Lilliputians. Gradually, they lost fear of me.Sometimes the children even played hide-and-seek in my hair.
One day, the king said to me, “Gulliver, I invite you to watch an important performance. It is a competition called Rope Dancing.” In the competition, a thin rope was tied between two poles very high above the ground. People had to dance on this rope. Each dancer tried to jump higher than the others. I had never seen such a dangerous sport
“Your Majesty,” I said, “many dancers must fall and be hurt or killed.”
“Yes,” he replied, “But I will give the best jobs in my kingdom to the men who are not afraid and jump the highest.” “What a strange way to choose who will work for the country!” I thought.
Then, as the king watched, I tied each corner of my handkerchief to a strong stick, and pushed the four sticks into the ground. My handkerchief was now under the rope but above the ground. Any dancer who fell would land on the handkerchief and not get hurt. The king was very pleased with my invention. His family and many other people watched the rope dancing.
“Would you and the queen like to see better ” I asked the king. I gently put them on my hand and held it beside the rope. They had a good view of the dancers. One very skilled performer held on to the rope and flipped (翻转) his body right over it. The king and the queen clapped loudly and cheered. Later the king told me that he made this man one of his chief (首要的) advisers.

“Want to hang out after school today ” his younger brother, Ricky, asked.
“Um. Yeah. OK.” Dillon was thinking about the busy week ahead of him.
At school, Dillon slid into his seat for math. Max, the leader of the floor hockey, was in the same class. He was much taller than Dillon and was a little intimidating (吓人的).

Dillon remembered Ricky. “I don’t have my goalie equipment (守门员装备).”
“I have extra,” said Max.
Dillon decided it was the best to stay on Max’s good side.

At Hangzhou Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Zhejiang, an exciting event took place earlier this year. The students weighed a Pig!
Since 2017, the school has built a small ecological (生态的) farm for pigs. Every year, teachers and students work together to discuss and use scientific ways to weigh the pigs. They have used methods like levers (杠杆)and Archimedes5 principle (阿基米德定律). This time, students chose to use Magdeburg hemispheres (马德堡半球).
First, the students used a pump (泵)to get the air out of the hemispheres, and then connected them to a cage where the pig was. When they turned on a switch (开关)to let air in, the pressure inside the hemispheres increased. With a loud “bang”, the hemispheres pulled apart, showing a pressure difference. Then, they worked
out the pig's weight with a special formula (公式),using the pressure difference. Their experiment (实验)worked.
Getting the pig to the test site was quite challenging, however. The pig was much larger than it was last year, making it harder for the students to deal with. “As the pig was about to enter the cage, it suddenly lay down and didn’t move at all,” 13-year-old Liu Nian says. In the end, they managed to push it into the cage.
After experimenting a few times and dealing with the results, the students found that the black pig weighed 165.3 kilograms, very close to its known weight of 154.5 kg.
Besides the fun of the task, the students also deepened their understanding of science through the activity. “We use what we learn in textbooks to solve real problems. This helps us know what we have learned better and makes science even more attractive,” said 14-year-old Hu Yulin.

A.It is far from the known weight.
B.It is very close to the exact weight.
C.It shows the pig’s known weight exactly.
D.The result of each experiment is quite different.
39.What did the students get out of weighing the pig
A.It helped them find fun in life. B.It taught them how to raise pigs.
C.It taught them to love animals. D.It helped them enjoy science better.
(2024·江苏连云港·二模)He was the only gray cub (幼崽) of the she-wolf. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was gray like his father. He was the strongest cub. He showed more anger than his brothers and sisters. He made more noises.
He was a carnivorous animal. He came of a breed of meat-killers and meat-eaters. His father and mother lived wholly upon meat. In his first months of life, he lived on mother’s milk, which was transformed directly from meat. And now, at a month old, when his eyes had been open for but a week, he was beginning himself to eat meat.
There came a time when there was no meat. For many days the cubs did not eat. They were too weak and
tired to play. One-Eye, the cub’s father, was killed in the fight over food. Even the she-wolf left the cave to find meat, but there was nothing. One by one, the cubs died. Only the she-wolf and the gray cub were left.
One day the gray cub ran out of the cave to hunt for his own food. He met a weasel (黄鼠狼) of his size. The rat-like animal ran at him and bit his throat. He was nearly dead when the she-wolf arrived just in time to kill and eat it.

Last night my Chinese friend took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu moved me a lot. The music was beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing who was born in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, and by age 17 Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. He developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue has become one of China’s national treasures.
