Like detectives, archaeologists use evidence to solve mysteries. Detectives look for clues to solve crimes. Archaeologists look for clues to help them understand how people lived long ago. In fact, the word “archaeology” means “the study of ancient things”. One type of evidence used to learn about the past is pottery.
People have used pottery for thousands of years all over the world. Old pottery is usually found in pieces called “potsherds”. Sometimes potsherds found in the same place can be put back together to recreate the original pot. Even in pieces, old pottery can teach us about the past. When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made. With this knowledge, they can get information about people’s lives in ancient times. ①
Pottery is made by first adding water to a kind of soil called clay. When wet clay can be formed into shapes. It is then heated. This hardens (使变硬) the clay and allows it to keep its shape. To make clay easier to shape and heat, potters (制陶工) use something called “temper”. Different materials can be used as temper. An archaeologist can tell where a pot came from by the types of clay and temper that were used. Sometimes a pot found in one location might have materials from another place. ②
Some of the earliest pots were made quite simply. A piece of clay was hollowed (掏空) out and shaped into a bowl. It was then heated at a low temperature. The finished pot was rough (粗糙), and often undecorated. This type of pot might be used for cooking.③
Later, coiled pots were made. These were made by first rolling the clay into a long snake shape. The coil was then wound (绕) in circles to form a pot. They were often decorated in different ways. These pots were heated at high temperatures. The higher the temperature, the harder and longer-lasting the pot. Further improvements in pottery-making developed in different times and places. ④
A pot’s shape and decoration can provide clues about the past. Painted pictures might show events from daily life or from ancient stories. Archaeologists know certain shapes and styles that were common in different times and places.
Archaeologists study the differences in types of pottery closely. Because of their work, these daily objects can tell some of the mysteries of the past.

(2024·江苏徐州·三模)My friend, Robert, has a twin sister named Amanda. Though they get along well, there are some things about Amanda and her friends that puzzle Robert. He can’t understand how girls can talk for so long. For example, sometimes when he leaves home to play football, Amanda and her friend, Sharon, are sitting on the sofa, talking. When he comes back three and a half hours later, they’re still sitting on the sofa, continuing the same conversation on the same topic. One day Robert was so curious that he asked Amanda what they talked about, but she replied, “We’re best friends. We talk about almost everything—film stars, pop songs, recipes, everything!”
Boys and girls have different attitudes towards friendship. Friendships between girls are usually based on shared feelings and support, but friendships between boys are based on shared activities or interests. A boy is likely to be careful about sharing his feelings with his close friends. A girl’s closest friend, however, might be eager to tell her about something that has happened in her life.
Many studies worldwide show that girls have more friendships than boys. In fact, many teenage boys cannot name a single best friend. When asked, they hesitate before answering, “My best friend I can’t think about that. I am busy with my homework, and I have so many different friends that it is hard to choose just one
best friend.”
Girls who have been asked can usually answer the question without pausing, “A best friend Of course. We have a lot to share with each other. We do a lot of things together such as talking and shopping.”
We have to realize: boys share activities, while girls share feelings. The qualities that boys and girls consider important in a friend seem to be the same, regardless of (无论) the basis of these friendships. The important thing to remember is that both of them are friendships. We all need friends in our lives.

In ancient times, umbrellas were made of materials like silk, paper and bamboo, and came in different colours and designs. They were used to protect people against the sun and rain, and they were also used in some special situations. For example, a red umbrella was used at weddings in some places. It was the symbol of protection against bad things and difficulties that the new couple would face.
In Chinese history, the earliest umbrellas appeared during the Spring and Autumn Period (770—476 BC). The wife of famous carpenter Lu Ban made the first umbrella to protect him from bad weather. But another story goes that Lu Ban came up with the idea of creating an umbrella when he saw some children using lotus (荷花) leaves for rain protection.
After the invention of paper, the oil-paper umbrella came into being, and then during the Tang Dynasty, it spread to Japan and Southeast Asian countries. When modern umbrellas appeared, the oil-paper umbrella was
hardly seen.

(2024·江苏无锡·一模)On Feb. 15, a new video model called Sora promises to create a video up to a minute long from a short text description. Just tell Sora your idea, and watch it make a video right before your eyes. Sora is described as “eye-popping”, “world-changing”, and “breathtaking, yet scaring.”
The videos from OpenAI’s Sora are full of details. One video of a Tokyo street scene shows that Sora has learned how objects fit together in 3-D: the camera goes into the scene to follow a couple as they walk past a row of shops. Sora knows how things should look in real life.
Sora looks at many videos and learns from them by breaking them into very small bits. It uses these bits to make a new video. The new video is grey at first and very messy. Then, Sora fixes the video until it looks good and smooth. Sora also gets help from ChatGPT, which turns the user’s short sentences into clear instructions. This
helps Sora make the video just as you asked.
Sora may find “busy” pictures hard to understand. For example, when a person moves, things around them change. In one video created by Sora, a grandma blows the candle on a birthday cake, but the flame (火焰) doesn’t move. Sora may not be able to tell “left” from “right”.
OpenAI also says that Sora deals with occlusion well. But one problem is that they fail to follow objects when they are out of sight. For example, if a truck passes in front of a street sign, the sign might not reappear afterward.
In a video of a papercraft underwater scene, Sora has added what looks like cuts between different pieces of footage (镜头), and the model has kept the same style between them. But it’s not perfect. In the Tokyo video, cars to the left look smaller than the people walking beside them. They also pop (突然出现) in and out between the trees. “There’s some work to be done,” says Brooks. “For example, if someone goes out of view for a long time, they won’t come back.”
“Sora seems like a very important leap forward,” says Sam Gregory, a human rights organization that specializes in the use and misuse of video technology. “But there are two sides of the coin,” he says. “The meaningful abilities help many more people to be storytellers using video. And there are also possibilities for misuse.”
OpenAI has also realized the risks that come with a video model. The OpenAI team plans to draw on the safety testing. “We’ll need to get more feedback (反馈) and learn more about the types of risks that need to be solved with video before it would make sense for us to put Sora into use,” says Ramesh.
15.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “occlusion”
A.being seen B.being followed C.being covered D.being dropped
16.The following sentence would best be placed at the end of _________.
Perhaps it will be an imagination tool or a misinformation machine.
A.Paragraph 4 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 2 D.Paragraph 1
17.The next part of the passage may be about _________.
A.the safety testing B.the misuse of Sora
C.two sides of Sora D.another video model
18.What can most possibly be the writer’s real purpose
A.To encourage us to use Sora to make short videos.
B.To explain to us how to use Sora to create short videos.
C.To remind us to care about the problems and risks Sora has.
D.To introduce what advantages Sora will bring to our daily life.

* Know the goals Make sure everyone understands the goal of the project. If you’re doing a class project, you need to check the teacher’s instructions carefully and ask questions whenever something isn’t clear. There’s a popular saying. If you don’t know where you’re going, you probably won’t get there.
* Assign (指派) roles Everyone should have a role in the team. For example, there should be a leader who helps everyone make decisions. There might be a note-taker who writes down the team’s ideas during meetings, and a time-keeper to control the time. There might also be a fact-checker or a group speaker.
* Divide the work For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn’t always do the same task. It’s good to try new things, even if they’re difficult!
* Make a plan
After you divide the work, write down a plan on paper. You can use a calendar to help you. List all the tasks and think about when each one must be finished. It’s important for everyone to follow the plan. And if you can’t finish your part on time, tell the others as soon as possible.

(2024·江苏盐城·二模)Have you ever been angry at someone when you were hungry If so, you’ve experienced “hangry (饿怒)”—some people get angry easily as they are hungry. The reason for this lies in what happens inside your body when it needs food.
Everything you eat would be changed into different kinds of nutrients (营养物) in your body. These nutrients would enter your blood and be passed to every part of your body and be used for creating energy. As time passes after your last meal, these nutrients in your blood drop. Also, your blood glucose (血糖) drops. Unlike other parts in your body, your brain totally depends on blood glucose to do its job. You’ve probably already noticed that simple things can become difficult when you are hungry and your blood glucose levels drop. You may find it hard to pay attention. For example, you may make silly mistakes in your study and homework. You might also have noticed that you can’t even speak clearly when you’re too hungry.
Another thing that happens when you’re hungry is behaving impolitely and can’t control yourself, such as snapping at others. In that case, even though you may already try your best to avoid conflict (冲突) with important
friends, you may still be too angry to control yourself when you are staying with the people you are most relaxed with. That’s why you may find yourself being impatient with your parents or friends.
So what should we do to avoid being hangry The easiest way is to eat something before you get too hungry. The best choice is to have some nutrient-rich and natural foods that help deal with hunger quickly and can be kept in your body as long as possible, but not fast food. The final way is to suggest that difficult situations should be dealt with after a meal, not before.

(2024·江苏南通·二模)The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow, of course, it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows and poplar trees in spring.
For some people, this “snow” is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes, and skin uncomfortable.
In spring, the female trees grow lots of flowers. When these flowers finish growing, they produce cotton-like seeds that spread through the air.
Luckily, scientists have found many ways to control catkins. Doing “gender change surgery (变性手术)” on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches of female trees and replace them with branches from male trees. This cuts down the number of catkins. However, this way is slow and expensive. A skilled worker can do the “surgery” on less than ten trees a day. From 2008 to 2018, only around 1, 000 trees were treated in Beijing, reported Outlook Weekly in 2022.
Scientists in Wuxi, Jiangsu, use special injections (注射剂) to reduce the number of catkins on trees. These injections make the trees mainly use their energy to grow bigger and get more leaves, not to reproduce (繁殖) and make catkins. Xu Qinming, an expert in Wuxi, told Science and Technology Daily that this method is safe for the trees. However, the trees need to get injections every year to keep the catkin numbers under control.
Other than injections, the trees can also take “medicine”. This medicine can be sprayed (喷洒) onto the trees before the catkins form, which can quickly reduce catkin numbers. Still, people need to be careful about how much of the medicine they use when they use it, or they might hurt the environment.
44.What can we infer from Paragraphs 1 and 2
A.Catkins are hard to see. B.It’s normal to snow in April.
C.People welcome willows. D.It’s uncomfortable to breathe in catkins.
45.How many ways are introduced to deal with catkins
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
46.What’s the disadvantage of using injections according to the passage
A.Trees need to be injected every year. B.It needs many skilled workers to do it.
C.It is slow and expensive. D.It’s bad for the trees and environment.
47.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.How to control too many catkins. B.How to protect willow and polar trees.
C.How to cut down harm caused by catkins. D.How to tell male and female willow trees.
(2024·江苏南通·二模)Childhood memories, the first bicycle ride, the first swim in the ocean, and the beautiful wallpaper long since removed from the family home are deeply rooted in our minds. But can they be trusted In other words, how reliable (可靠的) are our memories
Still, Carole Peterson, a professor at Memorial University who studies early childhood memory, said that
both children and adults can have memories that are not true. At all ages, we are more likely to be influenced by suggestions, although it is true that younger children are more affected than older children or adults.
In a study in 2011, Peterson and his team interviewed children ages 4 to 13 about their earliest memories and re-interviewed them two years later. They found that events filled with emotion were more likely to stay. In addition, if the child had a clear memory rather than a confused one, it would likely be remembered.
Peterson’s research has found a strong relationship between emotion and accurate (准确的) recall. This is supported by a 2015 study in which researchers interviewed preschoolers about an injury serious enough to require hospital treatment. Researchers followed up ten years later to see what these people remembered about their childhood injuries. “They were very accurate in recalling these emotional events,” Peterson said. “It was a surprise for all of us.”
Sometimes, people—especially children—can form false memories. In Michael Linden’s 2013 book Hurting Memories and Beneficial Forgetting, Linden states that high social expectations can lead to the development of false memories in children who learn to reply as expected. These false memories make you feel real. It is hard to tell them from real memories.

A.To introduce the topic. B.To support his opinion.
C.To show some examples. D.To compare different ideas.

A.Most of them are not true. B.They are easy to remember.
C.Not all of them are accurate. D.They have a great influence on a person’s life.
50.How did Peterson’s team do the research
A.By doing some interviews. B.By referring to a survey online.
C.By collecting information from hospitals. D.By following up children’s daily life for years.
51.Which statement will Michael Linden probably agree with
A.Only children can develop false memories.
B.False memories will be difficult to tell from real ones.
C.False memories were mainly caused by childhood injuries.
D.High social expectations can help improve children’s memories.
(2024·江苏苏州·二模)Imagine this: you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato when, suddenly, it
starts to scream! While this thing will never really happen, a new study showed that plants can make sounds when they are stressed.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems (茎) cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour at a frequency (频率) of 40 to 80 kilohertz, while the untouched group only made the sound once per hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the team told CNN.
The researchers don’t know how the sounds are made, but they believe the noise comes from the breaking of air bubbles in the plants. This means the noise produced by the plants is not intentional (故意的) or a form of active communication.
Although there’s no evidence (证据) that plants can intentionally communicate, animals and insects may be “listening in” to benefit from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress and not suitable to lay eggs on. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to make decisions, according to Science Focus.
After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as wheat (小麦), corm and grapevine, and found they also made more sounds when stressed. Researchers said the study can benefit farmers in the future, as they can better take care of the crops (庄稼) by “hearing” how plants feel.
52.What is the finding of the study by researchers from Tel Aviv University
A.Plants often feel stressed. B.Some plants can scream.
C.Plants can make sounds when stressed. D.Plants can communicate with each other.
53.Which one of the following groups can replace (代替) group two
A.A group that is fully-grown. B.A group which has its fruits picked.
C.A group that is taken good care of. D.A group that has suitable temperature.
54.What does “active communication” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Plants make sounds intentionally. B.Air bubbles in the plants can break.
C.Plants receive messages from animals. D.Plants make noise in a high frequency.
55.What might be the benefits of the finding
A.It can help farmers predict weather. B.It will help protect the environment.
C.It helps farmers decide what to plant. D.It may help improve the production of crops.
