Jo Land was surprised when she realized how much her youngest son’s school uniform cost. “A jumper was£25. A polo shirt was£15,” she says. “If it was this expensive for us, how on earth must families with three or four children manage ”
In December 2021, Land put a box outside her house, with a sign reading, “School uniform drop-off”. She set up a Facebook group and asked people to drop good-quality used uniforms into the box. The operation started to grow almost immediately. “Some weeks I give out up to 48 uniforms,“ she says. People drive up and drop the clothing: she sorts through it, keeps it in her “stock room” and posts details about donations on the Facebook group. The first parent to message her gets the items for nothing. Land puts the items in a named bag and then returns it to the box. Recipients (接受者) can come and collect at their leisure.
“Being able to access good-quality preloved school uniforms has been a lifeline,“ says Kristina, a mother of two. ”It’s just amazing.“
“Every child going to school deserves to feel smart and proud,” Land says. “We don’t want children to go to school feeling negative, because that affects their learning. Land has noticed that people rarely take without also giving. Sometimes people leave flowers on the box, or they drop off some outgrown clothes too.

The second tells a story about two generations of Chinese and foreigners protecting the environment and wildlife in China. She suffered a lot when living and working with locals as a volunteer. A study of more than five million books, both fiction and non-fiction, has found a marked decline in the use of emotional words over time. The researchers form the University of Bristol used Google Ngram Viewer, an online database for finding the frequency of terms in scanned books, to look for more than 600 particular words identified as representing anger, dislike, fear, joy, sadness and surprise.
They found that almost all of the categories showed a drop in these “mood words” over time. Only in the category of fear was there an increase in usage.
“It is a steady and continuous decline,” said Dr Alberto Acerbi. He assumed that the result might be explained by a change in the position occupied by literature, in a crowded media landscape. “One thing could be that in parallel to books the 20th century saw the start of other media. Maybe these media—movies, radio, drama—had more emotional content than books.”
Although both joy and sadness followed the general downwards trend, the research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that they also exhibited another interesting behavior: the ratio (比率) between the two varied greatly, apparently mirroring historical events. During the Roaring Twenties the joy-to-sadness ratio reached its highest point that would not occur again until before the recent financial crash. Then, in 1941, the ratio plunged at the height of World War II.
Nevertheless, the researchers held a reserved opinion about their claim that their result reflected wider social trends. In the paper, they even argue that the opposite could be true. “It has been suggested, for example, that it was the suppression (压抑) of desire in ordinary Elizabethan English life that increased demand for writing ‘filled with romance’… perhaps,” they conclude, “songs and books may not reflect the real population any more than catwalk models reflect the average body.”
32. The study was carried out by way of_________.
A. scanning the books with an online scanner B. counting the number of words in the books
C. searching digitized texts for emotional words D. analyzing different topics of the books
33. Which of the following is one of the research findings
A. Usage decreased in all the categories of mood words.
B. Usage of most mood words kept falling over time.
C. The decline was caused by the rise of other media.
D. The unfavorable position of literature led to the decline.
34. What does the underlined word “plunged” probably mean
A. increased B. changed C. dropped D. twisted
35. The researchers suspect that _______________.
A. their research result reflected wider social trends.
B. their research result was the contrary of social trends.
C. there was a suppression of desire in Elizabethan English life.
D. catwalk models reflect the population better than songs and books.

Brodie and his father lived in a caravan (宿营拖车) ever since his mother died and they lost their house. Now they worked for Miss Martha in the garden.
Brodie’s father had been a famous violin player. Brodie loved to watch how his father made the bow dance and glide (滑动) across the strings. When he turned 12, his father taught him how to play the instrument properly. Brodie was a fast learner and soon he could play the violin almost as well as his dad.
One day, Miss Samson, Brodie’s teacher, asked if anyone could play the violin. A talent scout (星探) was coming to school. He was looking for someone to play in the musical Mr Spy.
Hollie Larson’s hand went up fast. “I can play the violin,” she said. “I play in competitions.” Brodie kept quiet, but his friend Cam said, “Brodie has a violin and he can play it too.”
Brodie slid down in his seat. There was no way he would be good enough to play for an audience. He wasn’t going to make a fool of himself. Hollie Larson was good at everything.
“Bring your instruments tomorrow for a trial run,” the teacher said. “And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!”
Brodie’s father let him take the violin. “But do take good care of it, Brodie,” he said.
Hollie Larson offered to play first. She was good, really good. Brodie suddenly felt embarrassed. There was no way he could play after her. But Miss Samson’s voice was demanding. “Brodie,” she said. “Your turn!”
Brodie felt his face get hot as he pulled out the violin. But the minute the bow touched the strings, Brodie was transported to a different world. He was back in Martha’s garden listening to his father. The room, was silent as Brodie walked back to his seat. And then came the applause, everyone clapping, except Hollie Larson.
Since the talent scout would come the next morning Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong!

D
C 33. B 34. C 35. B
根据第一段中“The researchers form the University of Bristol used Google Ngram Viewer, an online database for finding the frequency of terms in scanned books, to look for more than 600 particular words identified as representing anger, dislike, fear, joy, sadness and surprise.
根据第二段中“They found that almost all of the categories showed a drop in these ‘mood words’ over time.
根据划线词上文“Although both joy and sadness followed the general downwards trend, the research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that they also exhibited another interesting behavior: the ratio (比率) between the two varied greatly, apparently mirroring historical events. During the Roaring Twenties the joy-to-sadness ratio reached its highest point that would not occur again until before the recent financial crash.” A. increased增加;B. changed改变;C. dropped下降;D. twisted扭曲。
根据最后一段中“Nevertheless, the researchers held a reserved opinion about their claim that their result reflected wider social trends. In the paper, they even argue that the opposite could be true.

Lead, don’t follow.

Work hard.
Whether you’re working for minimum wage or managing a large company, you should always take pride in your work. Doing so will show that you are capable of doing your part. 【
前文“Gaining admiration requires honesty, hard work, perseverance and some other qualities.(获得赞赏需要诚实、勤奋、毅力和其他一些品质。)”
可知,本段讲述要做领导,不要跟随别人,下文“You can be a leader even among those who have greater official authority than you by convincing others to follow a certain course or act in a certain way.(通过说服他人遵循某种路线或以某种方式行事,你甚至可以在那些比你拥有更大官方权威的人中成为领导者。)”
根据下文“It means you will stand by the things you believe. Admirable individuals try to keep their personal integrity (诚信) by staying true to who they are even when it is unpopular or questioned.
前文“A positive attitude doesn’t mean pretending that everything is great all the time. 说明现实是并不是一切都会很好,下文“Try to be positive about some negative situations, and maybe things will get better.( 试着以积极的态度对待一些消极的情况,也许事情会变得更好。)”
上文“Go above and beyond in your workplace by giving your all on the job. If you make pizzas, make the best pizza you can every time.( 在工作场所,全力以赴超越自己。

故填has employed。
故填and。
故填for。

故填an。
故填are rewarded。

Since the talent scout would come the next morning, Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong!

One possible version:
The next morning when he arrived, he found the case had fallen. Brodie could hardly believe his eyes. The neck of the violin was broken. That was when the talent scout came into the room. “Your teacher tells me there is real talent here,” he said, looking around. “I’m looking forward to hearing you.” Again, it was Hollie Larson who played first. Brodie listened but seemed to hear nothing. He saw that the talent scout smiled and whispered something to Miss Samson. When it was Brodie’s turn, Brodie lowered his head and explained his situation, overwhelmed by a wave of sadness.
Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—“Use mine,” she said. Brodie was stunned. Hollie really longed to win, but now she was offering him a chance. He had thought it was she who damaged his violin! He shook his head, but she insisted. “If you can’t play, that’s not a real win.” Casting a grateful glance at her, Brodie took over the violin. While playing, he felt his inner world coming back to peace. The talent scout was on his feet, smiling and clapping. So Brodie won the selection and was to play the violin in Mr Spy. Hollie didn’t win, but she and Brodie became true friends.
