When you come back to your home on a hot summer night, you find that the lights are already on, the air conditioner has been working for 30 minutes to cool the room, and the rice you prepared this morning has been cooked right before you arrive. This is the magic of a smart home.
A smart home is a special home where you can remotely control things with your phone. There are many kinds of smart home products, from making your home warm to making it bright, and even keeping you safe.
And they really are “smart”. Smart home apps even have self-learning skills. It means that they can learn when you usually do things and change to suit you. Some can also set lights to change based on sunrise or sunset times. And some systems can tell you if there is someone in your home when you are not there, or even call for help if there is danger.
Although smart homes are getting more popular in China and around the world, there are some problems from time to time. Paul Boag, a man from the UK who helps people with their technology, wrote that it is not always easy to set up these smart things. Even his wife, who used to be an engineer, found fitting the smart home light switches (开关) was a huge challenge for her. Besides, the smart home apps can be trouble. Many of them are not designed well, and each device (设备) has its own app. This means you have to deal with a lot of apps. But except for these problems, smart homes are still a great way to make life easier.
6.What is a smart home
7.What are the disadvantages of smart homes
8.What other “smart” skills do you want your home to have Why

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ of a group students were very high when a strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% below. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people.
They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18°C, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today It may be the weather’s problem.

The pilot, Antoine De Saint-Exupéry who wrote The Little Prince, died long ago, but the fictional pilot, who told the story, is as alive today as he was many years ago, along with his Prince, the fox, the rose and the snake.
It opens with a reminder: All grown-ups were once children, but few of them remember it. The pilot in this story lost that part of himself. After a stay in the desert with the little prince, he found his inner child again. It is a simple story with life lessons. Here are some.
“One only understands the things that one tames.” Seeing thousands of roses that look like his rose made the prince feel as if he was tricked by his flower. The fox showed him that taming someone takes time. The prince understood the nature of relationships: the time he has wasted on his rose makes her so important.
The fox, as his parting gift, shared his secret with the prince: “One can see rightly with the heart.” “What is on surface is not what matters.”
When the pilot showed his picture about the snake eating the elephant, adults only saw it as a hat. Adults couldn’t see what was inside the snake.
So “What is essential (very important and necessary) is invisible to eyes.” This truth set the little prince free. He decided to join his rose back on his planet.
Has he returned to his planet and his rose The ending is in the imagination of every reader as well as the pilot. After all, it is a book with something for everyone. This timeless tale touches both kids and adults.

Zheng Jun, president of Hubei University of Education, recently shared the story of the “Ferry (摆渡) Teacher of the Mountains” Wang Zhijun during the country’s two sessions period (两会期间).
It’s an inspiring story indeed. The 48-year-old has been teaching at a countryside school in Chongyang county, Hubei province, for more than 28 years. His classroom is upstream from Qingshan Reservoir, with water on three sides and is difficult to reach.
Wang’s school, the only one in the countryside village, has been destroyed by rainstorms and rebuilt and removed over the years.
Facing any difficulty and trouble, Wang never stepped back. He treated the school as his home and bought a small wooden boat to help ferry students from faraway areas so they could make it to school on time.
When the weather is terrible or the water level is too high, Wang invites his students to stay and eat with him in safety.
“Some students, sometimes, even lived there for more than a week when their parents couldn’t come get them. The children consider it as their second home,” Wang said.
Over the years, Wang had several chances to move to the town to teach, but he said he would worry about the children in the faraway areas.
With Wang’s devotion, 46 students from the countryside village, with a population of 800, have been admitted to universities and colleges.
“I just want to send more students out of the mountains so that they can go higher and farther. I also hope they can return to help grow their hometown after completing their university studies,” he said.

(2024·江苏盐城·一模)Many students have problems with grammar, speaking or writing when preparing for tests, but vocabulary (词汇) is the most common one. Maybe we can make it if we can get some new ways to memorize new words. One way you can have a try is“structured reviewing”.
Structured reviewing means continuous (持续的) reviewing of what we have learned in order to better understand it. We all agree that people forget information they have learned if they don’t review it in time.
Chart of Steps of “Structured Reviewing”
Memorize five sentences with new words→_________→Review them once a day for 5 days→ Review them once a week→Review them once a month
Learn five new words every day. We can learn five different sentences with a new word in each sentence. On the first day in the early morning, we can write them down a few times while reading them aloud so that we can memorize them.
Moreover, we need to review them six times a day, including after the first lesson, after lunch at the school and after dinner.
On the second day in the early morning, we get over the first day’s sentences. Then we learn five new sentences with five new words just as we did the day before.
For each day’s sentences, after we have reviewed them for five continued days, we just need to review them once a week. Then once a month.
Through this method, we store them in our long-term memory and will never forget them.
Result of using this method
I used to hate new English words. I became even angry when I lost points because of the words. But there was no use—new words couldn’t be avoided. So, I changed my ways of memorizing the words. Now I review them in time. It seems to work well.—Frank
Many of us usually learn words separately and silently from the word list in our textbook, so we often write sentences with mistakes. We should make up our own sentences with new words and read them aloud. In this way, we can remember the new words better.

40.What is the second step of “structured reviewing” in the Chart

(2024·江苏徐州·一模)Liu Yiran, 18, remembers clearly how her schoolmates bullied (欺凌) her.
Liu went to a high school mainly for Chinese students in southern California, US. On March 30 last year, about ten of her schoolmates took her to a park nearby their school. There, they forced Liu to take off her clothes, hit her and burnt her with cigarettes. It went on for more than five hours, and it was all because of disagreements over a dinner bill, their hometowns and a boy, reported the Los Angeles Times.
When this reached the public, people were shocked. And now the bullies will get punishments from US laws. Three of the bullies, who are 19, were sent to prison on Feb 17. Zhai Yunyao, the main bully, faces 13 years in prison. Yang Yuhan will get 10 years and Zhang Xinlei will get six years.
The three students were “deeply shocked” after learning this. They thought they were just playing a trick on Liu and would only get punished by their school.
This just shows how ignorant (无知) Chinese students are about US laws and bullying, wrote China Daily.
In China, bullying will only be punished by law when it causes very serious physical harm. However, there is other bullying, such as lighter physical or even emotional harm. But people don’t pay enough attention to school bullying, taking it only as small fights between students, according to TangJun, from Renmin University of China.
Thus, education about bullying is important, said legaldaily. com, as well as more specific laws and
anti-bullying (反欺凌) school programs. “Don’t think school bullying is uncommon, and then it may be solved,” it wrote.

46.How did the bullies feel when they learnt their punishment from US laws

Zhangzhou hand puppetry (漳州布袋木偶戏) has a history of over 1,000 years. Hand puppet shows need performers to have direct control of their hands. A performer often uses the palm (手掌) as the body of the puppet and the index finger to support the head, while the thumb and the other three fingers support the left and right arms. Highly skilled artists can perform with two puppets, each with different personalities, at the same time. In 2006, Zhangzhou hand puppetry was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage.
Zhuang Yanhong is a 55-year-old inheritor (传承人) of Zhangzhou hand puppetry. She was born into a “hand puppetry family”. So, her love for it started in her childhood. “My father is a national-level inheritor and my mother a costume designer for hand puppets,” said Zhuang.
Zhuang has studied in a professional art school since the age of 10 and was able to perform with masters across the country at age 16.
According to Zhuang, hand puppet shows become less popular with the rise of TV dramas. To save the old art and make it alive again, creative inheritors have been doing what they can to give it a modern touch. “The puppetry has become much more realistic after flexible (灵活的) arms and legs with joints (关节) were invented. It has also borrowed from other show forms like Peking Opera, modern TV drama and animation,” Zhuang said.
Zhuang believes the art has a bright future. “There is no limit (限制) to hand puppetry because it often needs much imagination and creativity in nature. I think it will have a more creative form in the future.”

Having spent 15 years eating across China, Fuchsia Dunlop writes about how she slowly grew to love the strange and wonderful food found across the country in her book Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper.
Dunlop recalls how she became the first foreigner to study at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine. In a class of nearly fifty young Chinese, she was the only girl student.
