Besides getting out into nature yourself, the next best thing—especially in the cold, dark
winter—is to take it all in through the pages of a book. But where to start Check out our natural
history book recommendations from China and beyond below!
My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir, US/UK
In the summer of 1869, John Muir, joined a group of shepherds in the foothills of California’s
Sierra Nevada mountain. During the months, he kept a diary while following a flock of sheep,
painting a glorious picture of idyllic forests and majestic mountain peaks. His rich perspective and
enthusiasm inspired thousands of Americans to visit the area, which later became the famous
Yosemite National Park.
Living as a Naturalist by Liu Huajie, China
Natural history might seem to tackle from a theoretical perspective, but Living as a Naturalist
makes it accessible and attractive. Liu uses flowers and plants as an entry point and gives readers
practical examples of how we can engage with natural history in our daily lives. With a humorous
and engaging writing style, not only does the book interpret ancient Chinese educational and
philosophical ideas, but it also introduces key figures in the West’s approach to the subject.
The Peregrine by J.A. Baker, UK
In 1965, John A. Baker gave up his work and lived on his earnings, devoting all his time to his
“obsession”—the peregrine falcon. Like the bird itself, Baker has a keen eye for detail, and his book
is “full of the drama of the everyday”, especially their most exciting moments, like fast flying and
hunting prey. He pours his heart and soul into his descriptions, transforming his narrative into

poetry. In doing so, he entices (吸引) the reader to become fascinated by the smallest of details in
things like bird flight and cloud formation.
21. Whose book eventually helped establish a national park
A. Yosemite’s. B. John Muir’s. C. Liu Huajie’s. D. J.A. Baker’s.
22. What is special about the book Living as a Naturalist
A. It helps tackle the subject from a more theoretical perspective.
B. It offers readers a practical and daily angle to understand nature.
C. It interprets natural history from an ancient way of the West.
D. It applies an attractive way to feature some eastern key figures.
23. Which book will you prefer if you are a bird lover
A. My First Summer in the Sierra B. Living as a Naturalist
C. The Peregrine D. None of the above.
B
During the final term of my theater and performance degree, I found myself standing outside
Berkeley Court care home with three classmates and an underdeveloped idea. We planned to hold
some interactive workshops with the residents to try to inspire memory and social engagement.
I remember being nervous, aware that we were working with people who were vulnerable and
that I had no idea what I was doing. Some residents were almost nonverbal, some were clearly not
with it, some were happy to see us, and some were not.
I had decided to play music at the end of the session. We went with the song My Way because
the residents, all roughly 80 years old, would have been listening to the hit song in their late 20s.
Once I pressed play, it was as if a spell had been cast. Nearly everyone in the room stood up
and sang what seemed like every word. I was so profoundly moved. Many of them were
communicating much better. It looked and felt like magic.
Off I went to drama school, but I thought about that experience almost daily. So when we were
given the opportunity to write a script for a theater festival, I created a love story about music and
dementia (痴呆), spanning 50 years of a couple’s life.
And now, 10 years later, the show I made is running again in London thanks to the Music for
Dementia campaign.
I now know that music-based interventions reduce the need for anti-psychotic medication (抗精
神病药物) in more than 60 percent of people living with dementia. I don’t know what my My Way
would be, but I certainly think we should all strive to find our song and do our best to stay
connected to the people we share it with.
24. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Before we entered the care home, I already had a well-prepared plan.
B. The purpose of interactivity is to arouse residents’memory and participation.
C. All the residents outside Berkeley Court are vulnerable and nonverbal.
D. I, with 3 classmates, was applying for the theater and performance degree.
25. What does the underlined sentence “it was as if a spell had been cast” in paragraph 4 mean
A. We accidentally played the right hit song for the resident to dance to.
B. The residents, who were roughly 80, were fascinated by the magic.
C. The song My Way was played as a starter for the music campaign.
D. Amagical way was found to evoke the engagement of the seniors.
26. What is the function of the last paragraph
A. To emphasize the significance of music-based interventions and connection.
B. To enhance the awareness of giving attention to people living with dementia.
C. To reduce the adverse side effects of abuse of anti-psychotic medication.
D. To strive to develop magical ways to compose our own songs with youngsters.
27. What can be the most suitable title for the article
A. My Way B. Spells to be cast
C. Music and Dementia D. Music Makes Magic

It seems that the era of fancy, well-known restaurants has ended as people are now more
interested in finding which hole-in-the-wall restaurant (苍蝇小馆) has the best food. Nowadays, it’s
more fulfilling to post hole-in-the-wall restaurants you have found on Xiaohongshu and be asked
for addresses in the comment section.
Hole-in-the-wall restaurants are small restaurants that are not highly decorated but have many
delicious local dishes. Though they have long served as the “canteen” of their surrounding
neighborhoods, these hole-in-the-wall restaurants have gradually retreated from the busy streets as
more high-rise structures are built.
Now, hole-in-the-wall restaurants are often found in the corners of small lanes and alleys in
different parts of a city and the most popular ones usually have a history of more than 10 years and
are run as family businesses.
Many hole-in-the-wall restaurant lovers desire a more natural lifestyle, with some viewing their
dining habits as a protest against consumerism. A native of Wuhan surnamed Tian, appreciates that
these humble diners cook food with care. In contrast, some internet-famous restaurants only use
pre-made food or simply stir-fry their dishes, she complained. This results in the foods having
similar tastes.
A university student surnamed Zhou, tried a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with her boyfriend after
friends recommended it to her. She ordered three dishes, which only cost 64 yuan. “The food tastes
good, and it’s cheap,” she said.
Still, there are risks for both owners and fans of hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Zou Zhiping, a
professor at Hubei University Of Economics, said that due to limitations in funds and management
as well as lack of food safety awareness, there could be hygiene and food security issues at these
locations.
To solve these problems, Zou suggested that the government provide training and more support
for these restaurants. These restaurants should also improve their quality of service.
28. What is the author’s attitude to the hole-in-the-wall restaurants
A. Approving. B. Dismissive. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
29. What do we know about the hole-in-the-wall restaurants
A. They are often run as family businesses in the back lanes and alleys.
B. Pre-made food or simply stir-fried dishes are highly recommended there.
C. Customers can appreciate a natural and overdecorated lifestyle there.
D. Delicious and costly local specialities are served in those humble diners.
30. According to Zou Zhiping, what is NOT one of the causes of the risks
A. Limitations in funds. B. Imperfect management.
C. Off-the-map locations. D. Lack of safety awareness.
31. In which column do we probably find the article
A. Economy. B. Cuisine. C. Security. D. Management.

The sun’s “sneeze” arrived as predicted! Chin’s National Center for Space Weather (NCSW)
forecast geomagnetic activities to occur from March 24 to 26. According to monitoring data, Earth
experienced a geomagnetic storm that lasted for 12 hours on March 25.
Geomagnetic storms happen due to coronal mass ejections (CMES,日冕物质抛射 ) during
which some material from the sun’s outer layer makes its way to Earth. They can shoot out a huge
amount of material and carry a strong magnetic field, which causes major changes in Earth’s
magnetic environment.
“Geomagnetic storms can disrupt radio waves and cause problems for ground communication
and satellite signals,” Professor Cai Zheng from Tsinghua University said. This can influence the
accuracy of navigation systems and the quality of signals for phones and satellite TV. Strong
geomagnetic storms can also impact power transmission systems, even resulting in power outages.
To ease off the effects of geomagnetic storms, it’s recommended to power off unnecessary

electronic devices, especially high-powered ones, to prevent damage or fire. Critical equipment and
infrastructure also require special protective measures, including regular checks and data backups.
Intense geomagnetic activity can also affect the migration and navigation abilities of animals,
for instance, homing pigeons. Geomagnetic storms can affect their ability to find their way, making
it difficult for them to return home.
Despite these disruptions, what about the impact of such storms on humans Shortly after the
recent geomagnetic storm, some internet users claimed that they had trouble sleeping. However, it
was just a convenient excuse. “Geomagnetic storms usually don’t influence human health,” said
Zong Weiguo at China Meteorological Administration.
Not only do geomagnetic storms have minimal impact on humans, they also deliver an
unexpected gift—auroras (极光). During such a storm, charged particles from the sun are guided by
Earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere. When these particles hit atoms in the upper atmosphere,
they release energy, causing the glowing lights known as auroras. In the early morning of March 25,
auroras appeared in Genhe in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Mohe in Heilongjiang.
32. What causes geomagnetic storms
A. Magnetic sneezes forecast by NCSW.
B. Sun’s outer layers with a magnetic field.
C. Mass solar ejections emitted from the sun.
D. Particles guided by the earth’s atmosphere.
33. What could happen during geomagnetic storms
A. Radio waves and satellite signals become unstable.
B. High-powered electronic devices power off easily.
C. Migratory animals find them on the right way home.
D. More and more netizen suffer from sleeplessness.
34. Which statement is right about the process of aurora formation
A. Earth’s own magnetic field is guided into the core.
B. Charged particles are emitted with unexpected lights.
C. Upper atmosphere release energy and glowing light.
D. Solar particles collide with air molecules and glow.
35. According to the forecast, we could probably enjoy auroras ______.
A. in northern China B. before March 24
C. in Mongolia D. on a sunny day

第二节 (满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every day, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Abigail would go over to look at herself in the
mirror, thinking the same thing: I am just so ... ordinary.
It all started once she entered middle school, where her grades in all subjects were OK but not
great, and she couldn’t sing or dance that well, or play sports. She wasn’t even good at making
jokes as she was so shy.
As she continued to go down the same mind spiral of “you’re not good enough, what kind of
job could you get in the future being someone so ordinary ”, she checked the clock and rushed out
the door to get to school on time.
Along the way, she saw Peter walking ahead of her. As one of the class’s top students, he was
just so smart and dedicated. Peter always stayed behind after math class to continue working on the
equations. He was so obsessed and talented.
A few mornings later in class, something seemed a bit off with Abigail’s teacher, Mr Fry. He
was normally quite active, moving quickly from the whiteboard to the podium (讲台 ) to explain
some new knowledge points. But that morning, Abigail noticed that he seemed slower, not very
with it. Then, as he asked the students to copy down a math equation, Mr Fry began shaking and
then started to fall. Immediately, Abigail rushed from her seat in the fourth row, managing to catch
him just in time. He had fainted. “Someone go get the head teacher now!” yelled Abigail in a loud,
clear voice. Fifteen minutes later, Abigail and her classmates watched out the classroom window at
Mr Fry being wheeled across the parking lot on a stretcher (担架) to be put into an ambulance.
After two weeks off, Mr Fry was back, entering the classroom again to a round of applause
from the students. His presence brought a sense of relief and normalcy to the room, easing their
worry about his sudden illness.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As soon as the lunch bell rang, Mr Fry pulled Abigail aside.
“Extraordinary”, the word echoed in Abigail’s mind as she walked home from school that day.

Dear Michael,
I must preface my remarks by offering my genuine apologies for not being able to accompany you as a tour guide this summer due to an unforeseen ankle fracture 骨折 that has required me to remain in bed for two months for regular checkups and treatment. Consequently, I regretfully cannot participate in any outdoor activities.
Therefore, I highly recommend my classmate, Roy, as a suitable replacement. In terms of qualifications, Roy possesses superior English proficiency which enables him to communicate effortlessly with foreign guests. Additionally, his extensive knowledge of traditional Chinese culture will undoubtedly instill 注入 confidence when introducing our rich cultural heritage to foreign tourists. Lastly but equally important, Roy’s enthusiastic and optimistic disposition 性格 coupled with his patience and sense of responsibility makes him an ideal candidate for this role.
Once again, please accept my sincerest apologies while considering my thoughtful recommendation. Enjoy exploring our time-honoured history, abundant culture, and splendid natural scenery! (158 words)
Your sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible Vision:
Paragraph 1: As soon as the lunch bell rang, Mr Fry pulled Abigail aside. This was the first time she had ever spoken alone with a teacher. She rubbed her hands together and felt butterflies in her stomach. It was not until she heard a soft chuckle that she looked up to meet Mr Fry’s smiling eyes. “I’ve noticed your reserved nature and shyness, but what surprised me was your sharp insight, unique judgment, and calm response during my time of need. These traits demonstrate that you’re an extraordinary kid. Thank you for what you did.” (94 words)
Paragraph 2: “Extraordinary,” the word echoed in Abigail’s mind as she walked home from school that day. It seemed as if the word had taken root in her heart. She had never thought that the word could be applied to her. “If I can break out of my shell, things could be different.” Abigail was determined to get the ball rolling. Since then, she has gradually dared to make eye contact when speaking, ask about things she doesn’t understand in class and discuss equations with her classmates. Once and for all, she learned that one should not sell oneself short or get tied up in knots. Everyone has their own unique spark and strengths, waiting for exploration and discovery. (117 words)

But now researchers are warning about what they call third-hand smoke. When you smoke, dangerous matter from cigarettes get into your hair and clothing. As babies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so In that case I have to say that I should never get close to a baby.
W: That’s right. Actually all smoking parents should do the same or better give it up completely.

M: Hi Maria, it’s James. I hear the school barbecue’s not on Wednesday now
W: Yeah, that’s right. Everyone’s busy on that day, so it’ll be on Thursday.
M: Good. When does it start
W: Well, that’s changed too. Instead of 7:15 it’ll be 6:30, because there’s a band booked for 7:45.
M: What kind of music They had a rock band at the last barbecue.
W: This band will be even better. They do hip hop and their singer is from South Africa. He also plays jazz but he’s not doing that at the barbecue.
M: Great! Where is the barbecue going to be
W: You’ll never guess — next to the swimming pool! The school secretary only agreed to have it there because we can’t use the garden this year, and there’s a match on the sports field.
M: Excellent! See you there.
W: Bye!

W: We’re developing a new technology that can detect forest fires as soon as they start.
M: That sounds amazing. Given how many fires there have been recently, it’s something the world desperately needs.
W: Indeed. In 2020 alone, California has had over 8600 fires, losing roughly 4% of the state’s trees.
M: That is truly mind-blowing.
W: Yes. The other place where it will be useful is Australia. At the start of the year, there were 50 separate bush fires burning across the country.
M: So how will your new detection system work
W: We’re going to use a new range of satellites which have heat cameras.
M: Don’t other satellites have those
W: Yes, but none is so advanced. They can detect a fire the size of a football field. The new one can sense a fire the size of a car.
M: And will that be enough of a difference to stop the fire from spreading
W: We believe so. Hopefully it will give firefighters enough time to stop it before it gets too big. If they get the plane up in time they could stop it dead.
M: If it works, I really hope you get recognition for it.
W: I just want to try and stop trees from burning, and more importantly, protect the poor animals that live in them.
M: I know, we often only consider the human cost, never the animal one.

Today I want to talk about the importance of being prepared. There is a famous saying that goes: “If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” It’s famous because it is so true. Let me share with you a story that happened to me recently that proves this.
Over the summer, I had to get the main bedroom of my house rebuilt. Last week, I organized for a building examination for 11:00 on Monday. Well, at 10:55, I was still in the shower. I had forgotten all about it! When the examiner knocked on the door, I rushed out of the shower. However, I hadn’t taken the time to upgrade all the paperwork. I was totally unprepared — not to mention completely embarrassed! By 11:05, the examiner had left. He couldn’t wait around for me to get ready as he was scheduled for another job somewhere else. I made him angry by wasting his time. Unfortunately, I had to book another appointment — and I had to pay twice!
The point I am trying to make is, please, whatever you do in life, always be prepared!
