Ten years ago, Kristin Schell and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas. She tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting reading activities and playgroups. But those activities required planning ahead and arranging schedules, not to mention cooking and cleaning.
One day, Kristin needed backyard furniture for a party and bought a few picnic tables from Lowe's. The delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. After the party, Kristin painted the table turquoise (绿松石色) and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. For activities they used to do at the kitchen table, they now did out front at the picnic table. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people.’ Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. The turquoise table was inviting and we had a shared feel.”
Construction workers in the neighborhood took their lunch breaks at the table. A babysitter walking by with her young child sat down to rest. Then neighbors told Kristi their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. Soon “The Turquoise Table”was born, a movement of ordinary people who want to gather right in their own front yards.
“At the picnic table, all we have to do is show up. People's greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” Kristin says. She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward building relationships in her community.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in13 countries in the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. Texas Christian University in Fort Worth has several purple tables to match their team colors, for example. “No matter what color it is, it's a friendship table,” Kristin says.
24. Why did Kristin host activities when she moved to a new home
A. To promote the community service. B. To make plans for community events.
C. To build good relationship with neighbors. D. To help neighbors with cooking and cleaning.
25. How did the turquoise table change Kristin's family
A. They started staying indoors more time.
B. They became more private and superior.
C. They began to spend more time outside together.
D. They stopped hosting reading activities and playgroups.
26. Why would people like to join in the Turquoise Table movement
A. To spread the color turquoise. B. To improve communication skills.
C. To start a business selling picnic tables. D. To create community connections in front yards.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Turquoise—A Color That Can Match All the Tables
B. Everyday Greatness—Tables Where All Are Welcome
C. The Turquoise Table—A Worldwide Movement on Picnic
D. Community Gathering Activities—People's Greatest Need

Plenty of robots are inspired by existing animals, but not as many take their cue from extinct creatures. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers looked over 500-million years back in time for guidance. Their result, presented during the 68th Biophysical Society Annual Meeting, is an underwater soft robot modeled after one of the sea urchin's (海胆的) oldest ancestors.
Pleurocystitids (侧囊虫) swam in the oceans around half a billion years ago—about the same time experts now believe jellyfish first appeared. Pleurocystitids featured a muscular, tail-like structure that likely allowed them to better move underwater. After studying CT scans of the animal's fossilized remains, researchers fed the data into a computer program to analyze and offer mobility simulations (模拟).
While no one knows for sure exactly how pleurocystitids moved around, the team determined the most logical possibility likely involved side-to-side sweeping tail motions that allowed it to move forward across the ocean floor. This theory is also strengthened by fossil records, which indicate the animal's tail lengthened over time to make them move faster without the need for much more energy. From there, engineers built their own long-tailed, soft robot-pleurocystitid.
To the casual viewer, the video of the mechanical monster clumsily moving across the ground inch by inch may seem to imply why the pleurocysitid is long gone. But according to Richard Desatnick, a Carnegie Mellon PhD student, the ancient animal likely deserves more credit. “There are animals that were very successful for millions of years and the reason why they died out wasn't from a lack of success from their biology—there may have been a massive environmental change or extinction event,” Desatnick said in a recent profile.
The Carnegie Mellon team believes their soft robot could offer a variety of uses—including surveying dangerous geological localions, and helping out with underwater machine repairs. More flexible robot-pleurocystitids may one day glide through the waters. Even if nearby sea stars and urchins don't recognize it, neither would they exist without their shared source of inspiration.
28. Why did CMU researchers study the extinct sea creature
A. To save the existing animals. B. To design an underwater robot.
C. To explore underwater resources. D. To seek the sea creature's ancestor.
29. How did the team get information about pleurocystitids' movement
A. By studying its fossil records. B. By conducting experiments.
C. By analyzing its living environment. D. By referring to its biological knowledge.
30. What does the underlined word “clumsily” mean in paragraph 4
A. Smartly. B. Purposefully. C. Awkwardly. D. Delicately.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. The robot-pleurocystitid will have a bright future.
B. The sea stars and urchins will inspire a new robot.
C. Pleurocystitids died out due to lack of biological evolution.
D. Extinct sea creatures come back to life due to new technology.

In an era of digital technology, the art of writing by hand has slowly been downgraded to a past entertainment. However, recent research suggests that this physical act is essential to brain health and development, having multiple cognitive (认知的) benefits. It is time we should reevaluate the potential benefits it may have on our mental capacities.
According to numerous studies, writing by hand stimulates more complex and diverse brain connections essential for encoding new information and forming memories. For instance, a recent investigation found that brain connectivity patterns were far more complicated and widespread for participants who wrote by hand compared to those who typed. Thus, it is clear that handwriting has a distinct and significant impact on our brain health.
Handwriting isn't just good for our brains health—it also has clear, practical benefits. Research has shown that students who take handwritten notes score significantly higher on quizzes, demonstrating improved learning. This extends beyond the classroom too. People who recorded information on paper calendars demonstrated more brain activity and recalled information faster than those who used smartphones. The act of handwriting, therefore, could be a valuable tool for students preparing for exams and adults managing daily tasks.
Despite its clear benefits, handwriting has been on the decline. However, 25 states in the US have reintroduced writing back into school curriculums. This is a step in the right direction, as previous research has also indicated that handwriting is essential in children's brain development. Preliterate (未识字的) children who wrote by hand demonstrated brain activity in a circuit of the brain used in learning to read, further strengthening the link between handwriting and cognitive development.
It is clear that handwriting is a valuable activity that has the potential to enhance our brain health, learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. As we continue to navigate the digital age, it is important not to overlook the value of this seemingly simple activity. So, the next time you reach for your keyboard, remember the benefits of picking up a pen instead.
32. What do people usually think of handwriting at present
A. It has become an old-fashioned skill. B. It has many cognitive benefits in life.
C. It has been replaced by digital devices. D. It has been a popular entertainment.
33. What does the author mainly show about handwriting in paragraph 3
A. It is beneficial to brain health. B. It helps students score higher on quizzes.
C. It stimulates diverse brain connection. D. It has good effects on learning and memory.
34. Why is previous research mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To make a comparison. B. To add further evidence.
C. To show different opinions. D. To explain the brain activity.
35. What's the purpose of the passage
A. To illustrate a finding on handwriting. B. To introduce the artistic value of handwriting.
C. To show the wide application of handwriting. D. To emphasize the importance of handwriting.

In the small town of Riverdale, life was never easy for 17-year-old Emily. Her family had faced financial struggles since her father's business went down, leaving them in debt. To make matters worse, Emily's mother had fallen ill, adding medical bills to their list of concerns. Despite these challenges, Emily refused to let adversity define her. She worked tirelessly after school to support her family and kept up with her studies, determined to secure a scholarship for college.
One day, as she was browsing the internet for potential scholarship opportunities, Emily came across an article about a local charity event that offered a full scholarship to the winner of a talent competition. Without hesitation, she decided to enter the talent competition. Emily was an accomplished pianist, having practiced piano for hours every day throughout her childhood. She poured her heart into practicing for the competition, hoping it would be her ticket to a better future.
On the day of the competition, Emily felt a mix of nerves and excitement. She watched as other contestants showcased their talents—some sang, others danced, and a few of the contestants played instruments. When it was her turn, Emily took a deep breath and began to play. Her fingers moved gracefully over the keys, and the melody filled the room. She was nearly absorbed in the pieces that she had practiced hundreds of times. As the last note echoed, the audience erupted in applause.
The judges discussed for a while before finally announcing the winner. To Emily's dismay, she didn't win the scholarship. The judges praised her performance but said they were looking for something “different” this year. Emily left the event feeling defeated, wondering when she would ever escape her difficult circumstances.
Despite not winning the scholarship, Emily realized that sometimes, when one door closes, another opens. Her perseverance and determination had led her to a path she never could have imagined.

书面表达
Dear teachers, boys and girls,
Today, I am talking about a matter of utmost urgency—environmental conservation. The health of our planet is vital for our survival. Pollution, deforestation, and wasteful habits threaten the delicate balance of nature. We must act now to preserve our environment for future generations.
Our class has taken significant steps towards this goal. We've initiated a recycling program, reduced plastic use, and organized tree-planting activities. These efforts have led to a noticeable decline in waste and an increase in greenery around our school.
Small actions such as using eco-friendly products can make a huge difference. Let's come together and contribute to the protection of our Earth.
Thank you!
读后续写
As she walked home, lost in thought, a stranger approached her. Emily's heart raced as she tried to figure out what the stranger wanted. The man introduced himself as Mr. Thompson, one of the judges at the competition. He told Emily that although she hadn't won, her performance had deeply moved him. Mr. Thompson owned a music school and offered Emily a part-time job teaching piano to children. He believed in her talent and wanted to help her pursue her dream.
Emily was overjoyed and gratefully accepted the judge's offer. She began teaching at the music school, where she discovered a passion for mentoring young musicians. In time, Emily's reputation grew, and more students sought her out. With the income from her new job and the money she saved from winning various local competitions, Emily was able to help her family pay off their debts and cover her mother's medical expenses. Emily always remembered the lessons she learned during those challenging times—that sometimes, the greatest victory comes from the most difficult battle.
