In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”

C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop (超级高铁), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. If the project goes as planned, the new train will be the world’s fastest ground-based transport technology.
Chinese authorities have announced the approval of the country’s first hyperloop line. Its length will be 175 kilometers, and it will pass between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. These are two key metropolitan areas for the country’s economy, known for their large populations.
The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That’s 2 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains.
The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a high-security level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. The technology will further advance China’s position as a leader in transport.
A super-fast hyperloop train in China has completed its first test runs. These consisted of three test runs at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi province that reached the speed of 50 km/h. However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years.
8. What is the project about
A Building the world’s longest rail line.
B. Enlarging the passenger capacity of the train.
C. Constructing the first hyperloop line in China.
D. Expanding the coverage of the railway system.
9. What are the figures in paragraph 3 intended for
A. To prove the high speed of the hyperloop.
B. To stress the convenience of traveling by railway.
C. To state the necessity of developing high-speed trains.
D. To show China ‘s great efforts to improve transport technology.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the project
A. Its main purposes.
B. Its potential value.
C. Its specific tasks.
D. Its environmental benefits.
11. What is the next step of the project
A. Extending the railway line for trials.
B. Increasing the length of the hyperloop trains.
C. Conducting the train’s first test runs in Datong.
D. Reducing noise and pollution levels of the train.

The largest living land animal in Asia, Asian elephants once roamed grasslands and rainforests across the continent. Prior to the 1700s, habitats for the now-endangered animals were relatively stable. But a new study reveals that more than 64% of historic suitable elephant habitat across Asia has been lost.
Researchers found there was a rapid growth in habitat loss of Asian elephants from the year 1700, which is related to the expansion of European colonization(殖民化)of the region. During that time, logging, road-building, resource extraction and deforestation(森林砍伐) increased, and farming became more intense on land that might otherwise have been home to wildlife. The industrial revolution in the middle of the last century also drove greater habitat loss.
Habitat loss means elephants are migrating from their usual living area, creating challenges for human communities that have little experience with elephants. In 2021, millions of people were frightened by a herd of elephants that migrated out of a protected area in China’s southwest Yunnan Province and walked more than 500 kilometers, destroying crops, wandering through towns and causing more than a million dollars’ worth of damage.
With the elephants not having adequate habitat, there is increased potential for human-elephant conflict — a situation that shouldn’t be accepted as inevitable and one that can be avoided with proper planning. “We are going to reach a tipping point in which cultures of no conflict toward one another get replaced by cultures of antagonism(敌对)and violence— by both species. We have to de-escalate this situation,” said Shermin de Silva, a UCSD faculty member who led the research team.
If the elephants can’t find suitable habitats, they will become endangered and near extinction, which has an effect on the whole ecosystem. This is because elephants help spread seeds, so vegetation cover. Their habitats also include several other species of animals and plants. In the wake of satisfying their need for large spaces, and enough water and food, plenty of other species can survive. When we protect the elephant, we also protect thousands of other species.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The rapid growth of forest destruction.
B. The causes of habitat loss for Asian elephants.
C. The previous living environment of Asian elephants.
D. The effect of the industrial revolution on Asian elephants.
13. What do we know about the migrating elephants
A. They lost their way home. B. They enjoyed feeding on crops.
C. They caused many troubles for the locals. D. They headed southwest in search of water.
14. What does the underlined word “de-escalate”in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Ease up. B. Adapt to. C. Put up with. D. Take advantage of.
15. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph
A. To stress the necessity of protecting elephants.
B. To explain the significance of species diversity.
C. To provide suggestions on restoring elephant habitats.
D. To show the impact of the elephant population on the ecosystem.

How similar are language and music
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. ____16____ Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. ____17____ By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
____18____
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
____19____ Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. ____20____ I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).
A. Both are expressive.
B. Both vary with culture.
C. How do you know that I am angry
D. We use language to express our thoughts.
E. Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives.

At Piedmont Middle School, a kid could run track or play tennis, but everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since the first grade, when her older brother Toni scored the winning goal in the county middle school championship. The day she joined the team as a sixth-grader, she felt like she could fly.
But, unfortunately, her joy didn’t last. She spent most of the season on the bench. It was all because of the huge mistake she made in her first game. She passed the ball in the completely wrong direction! Straight to an enemy in blue, who quickly shot it into the corner of the net, scoring. The coach benched Laura for the rest of the game. When the Falcons lost 1-0,she was crushed.
Now that the season was over, she just wanted to forget about soccer. She clearly wasn’t good enough to play with the Falcons, and that was that.
A few days later, Laura’s mother found her lying on the sofa, watching music videos on her . phone.
“You’d be better off praticing,” her mother said.
“What for ” Laura said, rolling her eyes. “It won’t help me. I need someone to watch me and tell me how I can improve. I can’t get better by myself.”
Sighing, her mom sank down on the sofa. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it.”
After a moment, she added, “What if I film you during practice to help you find ways to improve ”
“But the season’s over, Mom. No more practice, remember ”
“The best players keep practicing even when the season’s over,” her mother said. “You remember Toni spending all summer bouncing a ball off his head in the driveway. He used to run ten miles a day in the Arizona summer sun. You think he did that for fun “
“But to practice plays I need at least one other person,” Laura protested.
Her mother patted her on the knee. “We’ll find that key, too,” she said.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
The next morning, Laura’s mother shook her awake early, “Come on, Laura; it’ s soccer time.”

根据第一段“According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop(超级高铁 ), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. ”(据《南华早报》报道,中国计划在2035年之前启动超级高铁,也被称为超高速管道磁悬浮系统。)可知,该项目是在中国建设第一条超级高铁。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That’s 2 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains.”(这两个城市之间的距离现在可以用大约3小时的汽车或1小时的高铁来完成;然而,超级高铁的速度可以达到1000公里/小时,这意味着这条线路可以在15分钟内完成,这比商用客机快2倍,比传统高速列车快10倍。) 故选A。

D
B 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据文章第二段 “Researchers found there was a rapid growth in habitat loss of Asian elephants from the year 1700, which is related to the expansion of European colonization(殖民化)of the region. During that time, logging, road-building, resource extraction and deforestation(森林砍伐) increased, and farming became more intense on land that might otherwise have been home to wildlife. (研究人员发现,从1700年开始,亚洲象的栖息地丧失迅速增加,这与欧洲殖民扩张有关。在那段时间里,伐木、筑路、资源开采和森林砍伐增加了,在原本可能成为野生动物家园的土地上,农业变得更加密集。)”以及最后一句“The industrial revolution in the middle of the last century also drove greater habitat loss.(上世纪中叶的工业革命也导致了更多的栖息地丧失。)”
根据第三段第一句“Habitat loss means elephants are migrating (迁徙) from their usual living area, creating challenges for human communities that have little experience with elephants.(栖息地的丧失意味着大象正在从它们通常的生活区域迁移,这给没有大象经验的人类社区带来了挑战。)”
根据第四段划线词之前“With the elephants not having adequate habitat, there is increased potential for human-elephant conflict — a situation that shouldn’t be accepted as inevitable and one that can be avoided with proper planning. “We are going to reach a tipping point in which cultures of no conflict toward one another get replaced by cultures of antagonism(敌对)and violence—by both species.(由于大象没有足够的栖息地,人象冲突的可能性增加了——这种情况不应该被认为是不可避免的,而是可以通过适当的规划来避免的。
根据最后一段第一句“If the elephants can’t find suitable habitats, they will become endangered and near extinction (灭绝), which has an effect on the whole ecosystem.(如果大象找不到合适的栖息地,它们就会濒临灭绝,这对整个生态系统都会产生影响。)”和最后一句“When we protect the elephant, we also protect thousands of other species.(当我们保护大象时,我们也保护了成千上万的其他物种。)” 故选A项。
F. So just as you read English you can read music.
G. In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.
E 17. F 18. B 19. C 20. G

C项“How do you know that I am angry (你怎么知道我生气了?)”符合题意,且与下文“Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. (你当然可以从我的脸上看出来,但你也一定会通过我的话知道。)”承接C项,是对选项问题的回答。故选C项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. Yours,
Li Hua
Dear John,
I understand your concern about your upcoming speech. Feeling nervous before a presentation is quite common, especially when one feels their delivery isn’t as fluent as they’d like.
Firstly, remember that everyone starts somewhere. Your lack of fluency might stem from a lack of practice or confidence. The key is to keep practicing and building up your confidence. Here are a few suggestions: Practice your speech out loud, record yourself, and listen to where you stumble. Focus on those areas and refine them. Additionally, remember to breathe deeply and stay calm on the day of the presentation. You’ll do great!
Yours,
Li Hua

The next morning, Laura’s mother shook her awake early, “Come on, Laura, it’s soccer time.” Reluctantly, Laura dragged herself out of bed, still feeling disheartened from her previous season’s disappointment. However, seeing her mother’s determination, Laura found herself unable to refuse. With a nod of encouragement, Laura began her drills, her movements slow and hesitant at first. With each repetition, however, she felt a sense of determination growing within her. With her mother’s watchful eye behind the camera, Laura focused on strengthening her legs, perfecting her footwork, and sharpening her ball control skills. The hours passed in a blur of sweat and effort, but with each practice session, Laura could feel herself growing stronger, more confident, and more capable.
When the next season came around, Laura was ready. With newfound determination and a strengthened resolve, she stepped onto the field with confidence. In the first game of the season, Laura’s hard work paid off. As the whistle blew, she moved past opponents with ease, displaying newfound agility and precision. With a swift move, she scored a spectacular goal, earning cheers from her teammates and spectators alike. On the way home, Laura’s friend couldn’t help but mention her remarkable improvement. “For every lock, there is a key!” Laura proudly exclaimed. Sitting in the front seat, Laura’s mother smiled silently, knowing that their perseverance and dedication had unlocked a new chapter of success for Laura on the soccer field.
